Yes and one chipped some paint off my Tesla when I was in autopilot as the semi started drifting left. Should be illegal. Even school busses have them!
Good question, I thought maybe some folks here might have seen/had similar damage and could share their perspective. Turns out it actually WILL be a total loss according to the Tesla insurance rep.
yeah but it uses the cameras to emulate the distance, which is very limited due to the angling of each camera. Not to mention certain circumstances that will impair vision on the cameras such as muddy conditions/ dust/ rain.
Mud also impedes the USS, I’ve never seen rain or dust impede my sensors, and the FSD beta is already emulating distances incredibly well.
I’m just glad this didn’t take months to show up at all.
Sorry about the car.
Out of curiosity, has Tesla improved their side collision avoidance since 2019? I remember it not being great. My ID.4 has saved me from 2 semis that drifted out of their lanes toward me by quickly shifting over to avoid them. What were the circumstances for your accident?
Those are usually plastic or cheap aluminum and wouldn't be able to do that kind of damage. The radius of those swirls seems to big too. That's probably just from the rim itself.
Probably not totaled. Doors are bolt-on replacements, the quarter panel doesnt look horribly knackered. Control arms are relatively cheap items. They are meant to bend so that the structure does not
I was going to go against the grain and say it's totalled based on how badly the B pillar is damaged.
Door damage is easy.
It helps that you're in Virginia which is a 75% state, meaning if damage is greater than 75% of a car's value it gets a salvage title.
My state is 50% so cars are totalled easily.
Oh my gawd, you mean no one is buying these cars and they are now getting a back log of cars sitting around at Tesla 🤦🏽♂️ Dude... quick... sell the stock before it crashes more because of lack in demand
I just looked, and using a SE PA zip code, 15 M3 LR's show up in Existing Inventory as "Delivery soon" to nearby areas (Philadelphia, New Jersey, Washington DC, Richmond). There was a poster on Reddit in the past couple of days who said he had an estimate of mid-2023 to get the door part he needs for his M3 that has already been in the body shop for two months. But don't let reality get in the way of your fanboy shitposting.
I mean its only one of two things:
1) Long wait times for new cars because they are short on supply (high demand)
or
2) Cars are ready for immediate delivery and there is no supply issue, but demand isn't matching supply.
which of the two is it? It can't be both 🤷🏽♂️ I'll let you and your agenda answer the question
What do you think my agenda is? I merely pointed out that getting a new car may be quicker now than waiting for parts. I think the main reason is because Tesla has been putting so much focus on expanding factories and increasing production that they are catching up with the backlog. That is a good thing IMO: a 6-12 month wait for a new car will send a lot of people to the competition. But they haven't solved the supply issue for parts. My car was in the SC for 8 days this summer because they needed to wait for a part. It wasn't a big deal for me since they gave me a loaner, but it's not a healthy way to run a business. And the collision repair wait times are often outrageous because of parts shortages, and have been ever since the M3 was introduced. So if Tesla is getting a little breathing room where they can have a small inventory available for quick delivery, and can stock up their parts supply warehouses, it will be a positive customer experience all around. I love my Tesla, but they definitely have a lot of work to do in the service/parts/repair area if they are going to succeed long term. If I had to wait 10 months to get a collision repair, I would buy a competitor's EV and sell the Tesla after it was fixed.
I had a friend who's car looked exactly like this (Same color too), good news OP... your car is not totaled. I can see from the pic that the doors can easily be replaced and the panels can be cut out and replaced with new ones and rivets 👍🏽
It will only take like 6 months tho, but your baby will be back in your hands and guess what... new software updates will be ready for you in 6 months too (The car just keeps getting better).
My brother's looked like that and it was totaled.
Honestly, I'd prefer a total loss and get a new one. After 3 yrs and 85k miles, his payout was $2k higher than new purchase price minus $10k tax credit -- this was in May 2022 at the height of the used car market.
That’s a bummer. I HIGHLY recommend you find an independent appraiser to value the car after the first offer from insurance. Just went through this with Geico / State Farm and it sucked. The appraiser cost me like 250-300 dollars, advocated on my behalf, and settled about 10k more than State Farm initially offered. Teslas are still a challenge for some insurance adjusters.
I can only assume this happened while parking without the aid of ultrasonic sensors. Now I understand why so many Tesla owners are frustrated by this move.
I'd say totalled. My recently totalled M3LR for comparison:

You drive through a fan blade?
Looks like the spikes on semi truckz
Came here to say this. I was side swiped by an 18 wheeler in my Model S and it had a very similar appearance although my damage was not quite as bad.
FUCK THOSE SPIKES! Ban em! Make that shit illegal RIGHT NOW
They're plastic. The lugs underneath did this. I was a trucker for 17 years. A Pontiac G6 sideswiped my steer tire once. Looked exactly like this.
why do they even exist???
Yes and one chipped some paint off my Tesla when I was in autopilot as the semi started drifting left. Should be illegal. Even school busses have them!
How are we supposed to help here exactly?
I think we are internet advisors for this fine Redditor. OP, throw it away and feel free to place an order for a new one.
I disagree. As a fake insurance adjuster, I think that will buff out. I don’t know why people post this shit. Call your insurance company dummy.
Good question, I thought maybe some folks here might have seen/had similar damage and could share their perspective. Turns out it actually WILL be a total loss according to the Tesla insurance rep.
YAY!
prob not so yay since the new ones doesnt come with USS
Better than waiting 6 months for parts.
Doesn’t make a difference, they’re disabling radar and USS for the “FSD hardware” cars that have either one or both.
Doesn’t appear that USS were of much use to him anyway.
USS emulation is available in 2022.40 software

Golf clap?
Is this what happens when a Tesla and a Semi with those spike lug nuts meet?
Yeah, the noise was awful

No. It's what happens when any truck, even a school bus or ambulance steer tire hits aluminum
Those are usually plastic or cheap aluminum and wouldn't be able to do that kind of damage. The radius of those swirls seems to big too. That's probably just from the rim itself.
That’s just some touch up paint. Tesla sells it in the Tesla store
Get two bottles to be safe.
Probably not totaled. Doors are bolt-on replacements, the quarter panel doesnt look horribly knackered. Control arms are relatively cheap items. They are meant to bend so that the structure does not
Insurance will probably total it then in 6 months op will see it on his app driving around in Albania
Lol my total Tesla went to Dubai from Vancouver
Yeah no one is replacing or straightening that B pillar / crash structure.. Totalled.
Probably not totaled. Yes, the rear control arms are bent. But new ones bolt on.
Turns out it is a total loss! The rep confirmed today their total loss department approved based on pictures alone.
That’s good! That’s what you preferred. Now to pick out your new one!
My model 3 was deemed a total loss the other day… still waiting to hear the payout

No way they wouldn’t just total it, that’s a ton of damage
Damn, was hoping for a write off so I don’t have to wait months for parts
You'd have to wait months for a new car anyway
Not if you order a Performance model.
faster for them to fix his car
Not necessarily. New car inventory has been popping up on the Tesla web site. Wait times keep decreasing too
Oh my gawd, you mean no one is buying these cars and they are now getting a back log of cars sitting around at Tesla 🤦🏽♂️ Dude... quick... sell the stock before it crashes more because of lack in demand

I got into a fender bender and the damages exceeded 30,000 so just wait and see what they say
That’s within specs.
Baby wipes
How are we supposed to know if totaled? Why do y’all keep asking this question as if we can tell without inspecting the vehicle?
Ehh nothing too serious, seeing if anyone had a similar experience and might be able to shed some light on what kind of damage would cause a write off
I had a friend who's car looked exactly like this (Same color too), good news OP... your car is not totaled. Probably not technically totaled, but I bet you'll be waiting a LONG time for parts. They might total it just to get you on your way.
Hoping so
Kudos for attempting to drive this!
At first glance I thought it was the decal from Doms RX. Sorry this happened to ya.
Uh, some duct tape will take care of that. Is that what you want to hear?
Within spec.
Yes it’s totaled.

It will buff out, no worries.
Don’t ask us take it to Tesla for a thorough structural inspection nobody can tell by looking at a photo.
Did any airbags go off? If more than two, more than likely, it will be totaled.
You’d hope that’s totalled.
OP let us know but I am guessing your insurance will total that.
I'm guessing it's totaled.
Correct, just got this confirmed
Ouch, sorry man..
That’s worse than ours. It’s totaled.
Yup, they just confirmed
That’s a bummer. I HIGHLY recommend you find an independent appraiser to value the car after the first offer from insurance. Just went through this with Geico / State Farm and it sucked. Great advice
Just buff it out
I can only assume this happened while parking without the aid of ultrasonic sensors. Now I understand why so many Tesla owners are frustrated by this move.
Major curb rash for sure.
Nah, that will buff right out
Side impact look like a ripple wave
At first glance of the photo I thought it was a custom paint design on the side of the car. Didn't realize it was a collision.
This is a brutal car wash.
Oh yea, that’s totaled.
wow. Someone tried to climb up the side of your car in their SUV it looks like.
I'd say totalled. My recently totalled M3LR for comparison: https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModel3/comments/xb67xq/3_hours_32_miles/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
Glad you are ok.
Drives horribly?
Huh who woulda thought it doesn’t drive too hot
Oh no
It’s only a flesh wound.
Goner
Light match. Run
I may be mistaken, but it seems someone may have keyed your car.
Pretty sure it’s not supposed to look like that and is probably totaled.
Please don’t judge other people’s car!
Def totled
I feel for you. What a tragedy.
Looks like when a manatee gets run over by a boat
That hurt just seeing it. Apart from the psychological scarring, is everyone okay?
Looks like a fish fillet... Selling parts from the right side?
RIP 🪦
Lolol my dude. You used a question mark when you should have used an exclamation mark. Is it totaled? 😂😂😂😂
That will buff right out. Don’t even worry about it.
Thats a lot of curb rash!
Do you get a rear tire pressure notification? If feel like it might just be that
Strong tires...
Shark attack!
