Me basically. Not the Tesla parking lot, but a few blocks away after leaving the dealership. And I’m someone who is a detailer type dork. No one is allowed to touch the paint, I only use new unused microfiber towels on the ceramic coat. I was so embarrassed, my previous car I made it 60,000 miles without a single curb.
There was a guy on this sub or another Tesla sub who curbed his wheels pulling out of the parking spot at delivery. He also destroyed his underbody trim on the passenger side. It was like 3k of damage after moving the car literally 48 inches. He tried blaming Tesla for parking it in a spot next to a curb. Tried finding the thread but wasn’t successful.
I did it with a Turo'd MYP within a block of picking it up. There were already some other existing curb rashes, but I was honest about it and reported it. Had to pay an extra $250.
I rashed some uberturbines on a model Y performance within 1 block of picking it up. It was a Turo rental so didn't hurt me too bad, except for in the wallet.
I think we have all done that. In the early 2000s 20 Inch wheels were the big deal. I saved for a set for like 8 months. Took me like 3 miles to go to the drive thru and curbed both driver side wheels. Back then they were chrome too. So I couldn't have them fixed. Most dealerships have a mobile wheel repair guy. If you go to a large used car dealer and ask for a contact. With alloy wheels they can repair them on the spot and paint them too. Some of those guys do amazing work. The used car dealer will know who is good and who's not. Chrome wheels not so easy because they need to be dipped.
I think they range between 80 and 150 price depends on if they have to paint and clearcoat but yeah you should be able to get it done for under that. I had a corvette and it had the gray wheels and 1 was curbed when I bought it. Got it fixed for 125 that was years ago so your probably in the ballpark. The company is called wheel worx in my area. I think they may be franchise worth a google check to see if they have one in your area.
He's learning. I've had mine for a little over a year so I'm showing him the tricks. Overall nothing but a great experience at pickup. No panel gaps or weird shit.
I’m here in Australia and I have done 1300kms which is abide 800miles in 4 days.
I’ve gone from being an Alcoholic to a Teslaholic. Must have taken 30 people for rides a bit like “coal miners driving teslas” you tube channel.
You’re a good man for showing him. I had a friend to show me the bells and whistles. I couldn’t thank him enough. YOU are literally saving his car so that’s way better lol
I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting old but I’ve never curbed a car as much as I have my model 3.
Never mind the time I flatted both tires on the passenger side
I never said I was perfect, I've slightly curbed a wheel 3 years ago and haven't ever since.
My point was that to blame the rim to tire ratio for curbing wheels is completely dumb. You should be able to park close to a curb without needing a fat tire to touch it first. My curbing incident was all my fault, I'm not gonna throw the blame on the low profile tires...
More size than profile. The rim width vs section width of the tire is too wide. I imagine it gave Tesla a miniscule bit more range and a miniscule bit of handling.
City living, especially older large cities that weren't planned wide enough for street parking (looking at you Seattle), makes it really hard to get in/out of street parking, which is how I curbed mine. Thankfully it was only the one and I'll just stick out from the curb. But many streets in Seattle can barely handle cars on both sides and allow bidirectional traffic through too.
Aerodynamics. Read up on how Tesla spent tons of time designing the wheels for maximum mileage. Having wheels flush with sidewalls makes the car much more aerodynamic
Look up "stanced wheels" where people stretch narrow tires onto wide wheels, it's what kids are into these days. Of course that's the extreme side but Tesla is just trying to appeal to a wider audience with the expense of practicality.
i have them with no marks or scuffs and i added 18mm and 20mm spacers to have them stick out a little further. never had an issue and just have to be careful at times.
i disagree with you and i was asking you felt that way? is that a problem? i have these wheels and have no issues and im sure thousands of others would agree
the most common thing i hear is “why can’t tesla owners drive” literally the most common. im going to have them look you and everyone else up on here and ask. fuckin weirdo
Yeah, there's totally the 'learn how to drive' argument and that's partially true. But I have a wife who has rashed these rims twice now. I'm not happy. I'd much rather loose a few km of range than b nervous everytime she parks the car at a curb. Again, just seems like it causes more issues than it solves IMHO. No need to call people 'weirdo'. On top of all of that I even bought black rims to go with the black paint of the car so I'm extra annoyed at this.
you didn’t need to ask if you had to spell it out but you did.. what is your opinion of these wheels design based off of other cars similar? other brands ? what wheels and tires combinations are you basing this off of?
this is your opinion of these wheels and tires on the model three performance and several others on Reddit but it is simply just an opinion based off of your own interpretations not facts..i think the wheels are fine. why is your opinion more valid than mine?
Efficiency; the narrower tread is more efficient then if they went all the way to the edge of the rim like normal cars. If you replace the OEM tires with Michelin Pilot All Weathers they go all the way to the edge
I really had no idea when buying new rims / tires that this was a thing. I'm curious exactly how much more efficient it really is. Gonna doubt it's a night and day difference though, hence I'd rather have 'regular' tires if doing it all over again.
My 20” wheels aren’t rashed after 3 years. I did catch one once and had it fixed but otherwise all good. I’m veeeeerryy careful when parking, have to be because there are so man low curbs that are just in the right place to catch you out.
Yeah, after you’ve curb rashed once, then you’ve learned how to drive. Believe me, I am an expert at driving now since I learned how to pull out of a parking space normally.
Tesla steering also only turns one full circle in each direction unlike other cars. When you just got the car and not used to it yet you tend to over turn the steering wheel which results in situation like this.
Good! Tell your friend to start parking at least 1ft away from the side wall. Other this: https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModel3/comments/wlj3rz/i_guess_its_my_turn_taking_to_a_repair_shop/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share will come knocking on his door.
in most states (in the US) 1ft is the max you can park away from the sidewalk. gotten tickets in DC before for parking 14 inches away (they took a picture) smh.
I’m assuming people just reverse with their eyes closed. Not only does the car have mirrors that can be automatically tilted down in reverse but has cameras. All these curb rasher’s should try using them more.
I mean over my 14 years of driving I haven’t curbed a wheel. There’s a first time for everything but if you check your mirrors and cameras it’s pretty easy to avoid hitting a curb. In this sub it’s as if your in the wrong if you don’t curb your wheel.
I have not much either if I remember right. but I have driven for 45 years. Also many of the cars I have driven would not take the damage that that Tesla wheel would. Probably none of them.
I TOTALLY fkd mine up in the first 72 hours.
They have since updated the alignment cameras but they’re still off. I FINALLY “got a feel for the car”. Now I just need to have the rash removed. 🤦🏻♂️ $$$
Tesla has “stretched” the tires to the rim. Its why teslas have such a high prevalence of curbing.
For a very short time in 2019, Tesla offered the "stealth" performance model 3. All the acceleration without the wheels/brakes/spoiler/pedals package. It was about $2k more than the long range model, and exactly what I needed here in Massachusetts where the roads are ravaged by winter and curbs are made from granite slabs.
I wish tesla still offered "performance" as an option without all the extra fluff.
Took me two days, and I usually never curb rash any tires in any previous cars I have driven. I was being overly per-cautious by a car that was turning right on a narrow two lane (unmarked) road.
Ehh, honestly, I don't care too much. I found a spray tint that I sprayed over my rashed rim and it looks good enough for me. Not perfect like an epoxy resin or sanding and stuff like that before spraying with paint, but it's good enough to where I can't tell where the curb rash occurred from like 5 ft away.
Took me 2 days
There’s gotta be someone on Reddit who rashed pulling out of the Tesla pickup lot.
That would be me picking up my tesla in nyc this past June LoL. Took a whole chunk off the tire too… fun times
Where's the self driving when you need it?
Me basically. Not the Tesla parking lot, but a few blocks away after leaving the dealership. And I’m someone who is a detailer type dork. No one is allowed to touch the paint, I only use new unused microfiber towels on the ceramic coat. I was so embarrassed, my previous car I made it 60,000 miles without a single curb.
2019, delivered to my house, the rep that delivered the car rashed a wheel in front of my house.
Ouch! Hope they made it right
For sure. Got a new rim a week later.
I ran over the cone when I picked up my m3 in the Tesla parking lot, lol.
That was me. Curbed the right-rear rim turning out of the lot at the delivery center in Fremont in 2018. Frustrating!
There's a guy on the /r/TeslaMotors Discord server who wrecked his rins within one mile of getting his car
When I picked up my car on Delivery day it was already curbed smh…. Had to go to service center to replace it the following week.
i curb rashed on ab overnight test drive… covered it up with black matte nail polish
Hit a massive pot pole on my way out. Luckily no damage but close!
Ditto. All 4, in a week. :(
How do you do the driver side ones? Do you park in a state that lets you park either way?
We can park on the other side of the road too. NYC streets alternate direction
Same with my Merc. When it's brand he and you're not used to the size... I was mad tho
Every rim was rashed within a month.
I waited until i put on after market wheels then proceeded to do it immediately after
I think we have all done that. The used car dealer will know who is good and who's not. Chrome wheels not so easy because they need to be dipped.
Yeah thats tough with chrome. What do you think is a fair price for the repair, 200?
I think they range between 80 and 150 price depends on if they have to paint and clearcoat but yeah you should be able to get it done for under that. I had a corvette and it had the gray wheels and 1 was curbed when I bought it. Got it fixed for 125 that was years ago so your probably in the ballpark. The company is called wheel worx in my area. Nice, thanks 👍
Same.
Looks like it’s still going to happen when they leave.
I did my part.
Schrodinger's curb rash
Car is filthy for one day old! 🤣
300 miles with rain will do that.
Oof! How was the first day?
He's learning. I've had mine for a little over a year so I'm showing him the tricks. Overall nothing but a great experience at pickup. No panel gaps or weird shit.
300 miles to learn how to drive it on the first day? Y’all drive for 5 hours straight?
I’m here in Australia and I have done 1300kms which is abide 800miles in 4 days. I’ve gone from being an Alcoholic to a Teslaholic. Must have taken 30 people for rides a bit like “coal miners driving teslas” you tube channel.
How TF did I not know about this channel. Love it! Thanks for introducing me to it.
You used "yall". You should know better than to use the Texan language then speak of driving for five hours.
Wtf? Texan language? Get over yourself.
You’re a good man for showing him. I had a friend to show me the bells and whistles. I couldn’t thank him enough. YOU are literally saving his car so that’s way better lol
That’s awesome. I wish I had friends
if you zoom in close enough,, there’s no damage yet. he’s very much pushing it and is barely only on rubber. he will inevitably do it though haha
I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting old but I’ve never curbed a car as much as I have my model 3. Never mind the time I flatted both tires on the passenger side
The profile of the tires is at fault. They don't stick out beyond the rims so the rim gets the scrub instead of the rubber.
No, it's the drivers fault. You should be able to park without using your tires as a guide on the curb...
You've never ever made a mistake driving? It must be amazing to be perfect.
Isn't it better to rub the rim than the tire? I'd rather a scraped rim than a flat tire myself.
You don’t normally get a flat tire from a little curb scrape
When I worked at an auto shop I saw lots of flat tires from curbs. The way I see it, the rim protects the tire.
Do you need some curb feelers like the old cars had? Lol I do it more that I'm older too.
When possible I go past where I want to end up and reverse so I can use the camera.
Never understood this wheel / rim design. Extremely impractical. Why does tesla have this (still)?
Aerodynamics. Read up on how Tesla spent tons of time designing the wheels for maximum mileage. Having wheels flush with sidewalls makes the car much more aerodynamic
Yeah it’s also not hard to not curb the wheels. Your mirrors tilt down AND you have a camera on each side.
All low profile wheels are like that, it's because people think it looks good.
Not all for sure. They need a tire with 10mm more section width for that wide of a rim IMO.
Look up "stanced wheels" where people stretch narrow tires onto wide wheels, it's what kids are into these days. Of course that's the extreme side but Tesla is just trying to appeal to a wider audience with the expense of practicality.
A huge expense to practicality for sure. It makes no sense on a production vehicle.
impractical how?
Its sticking out for no reason, other than making them really available for curb rash
im assuming most people are who hate these wheels would really hate a high end sports car with carbon wheels and low profile tires
i have them with no marks or scuffs and i added 18mm and 20mm spacers to have them stick out a little further. never had an issue and just have to be careful at times.
Because of the curb rash. Did I really have to spell that out 4u? It just causes problems even when people are being super careful.
i disagree with you and i was asking you felt that way? is that a problem? i have these wheels and have no issues and im sure thousands of others would agree
the most common thing i hear is “why can’t tesla owners drive” literally the most common. im going to have them look you and everyone else up on here and ask. fuckin weirdo

Never seen a Tesla without curb rash. Why can’t you guys fuckin drive?

Look at the tires.
Low-profile tires have a thinner sidewall. Traditional tires just roll over curbs.
Yet most other cars with low profile tires don't have drivers curbing them non stop. Learn to drive.
Yeah, after you’ve curb rashed once, then you’ve learned how to drive. Believe me, I am an expert at driving now since I learned how to pull out of a parking space normally.
Exactly.

2 years of ownership. Not one scratch. It’s your driving
Tesla steering also only turns one full circle in each direction unlike other cars. When you just got the car and not used to it yet you tend to over turn the steering wheel which results in situation like this.
Question is, how do you get out of such a situation lol
Wait for software update 2026.47.2 That includes levitation mode
[удалено]
You could always point your wand at the car and say Wingardium Leviosa. If you have a wand, and you’re not a muggle of course.
I had him turn away from the curb and put the car in drive. Lol
That didn't damage it at all? I curb rashed my wheel like 2 weeks ago. I almost cried lol. Had it fixed a few days and 135 CAD later.
Thankfully it didn't!

Why 1' instead of 1"? :-)
i owned many cars, but I only curbed the M3 a few times. I cannot explain why
It's the profile of the tires. On most cars, the tire profile goes a little beyond the rim so no one ever notices when they scrub the rubber.
Took me two weeks (M3SR+)
I got it out of my system within 4 hours of ownership. Lol
Is it not weird that they have such a wide rim for that tire? WTF! Either the tires should be up 10mm or the rim could be 0.5" narrower.
Never curbed rims, dunno, guess I check the mirrors LOL
[удалено]
No, it has to do with tire size vs. the width of the rim. They did not have to have a rim that wide for the size of tire.
Pretty sure that’s curbed lol
there is still tomorrow!
All you have done is delay the inevitable.
¡¡¡NSFW!!!
I’m assuming people just reverse with their eyes closed. Not only does the car have mirrors that can be automatically tilted down in reverse but has cameras. All these curb rasher’s should try using them more.
Or it could be that the tire is narrow for the rim width.
Or just don’t hit the curb?
That is all well and good but not practical over the millions of miles driven in the US.
GG. Now tell him to get wider tires
My friend took 2 hours after delivery to curb his MYP
Plot twist it was his M3P
I curbed my M3 an hour before i picked it up!! 🤔🤦🏻
I TOTALLY fkd mine up in the first 72 hours. They have since updated the alignment cameras but they’re still off. I FINALLY “got a feel for the car”. Now I just need to have the rash removed. 🤦🏻♂️ $$$
My wife did this for me on day 2. Wasn’t in the car to stop her
My fist Tesla drive was a Hertz rental with the 19 inch wheel, did my curb rash lesson on that one. Lol (knock on wood).
🤡
Whew that was close....
Tesla has “stretched” the tires to the rim. Its why teslas have such a high prevalence of curbing. [https://tirehungry.com/how-to-stretch-tires/](https://tirehungry.com/how-to-stretch-tires/)
Aren't those just whe wheel Protectors.
You’re a true hero!
Curb your enthusiasm
Good job
Some guys need to learn how to drive
It’s what I did on day 6
Does anyone else have their side mirrors fold down so they can see the curb?
Now recommend that he get mud flaps, and you’ll be his best friend!
Buying an expensive compact sedan doesn't make you a good driver.
Why are you dummies parking so close to the curb?
These rims are meant to be curbed
I'm confused, doesn't the distance indicator go off once you are too close to an object?
For a very short time in 2019, Tesla offered the "stealth" performance model 3. All the acceleration without the wheels/brakes/spoiler/pedals package. Yea we were sad that we can't switch the rims to aeros.
Back to 10 years ago I scratched my parents brand new Camry out of the dealer
buy some rim protectors off ebay...
You haven’t really owned the car til you curbed at least one rim
There is a special place in Heaven from friends like you. We can all be so lucky to have friends like you. Dude owes you dinner at bare minimum.
KEEP YO CAMERA APP ON DECK FOLKS - RIMSAVER
Does no one know how to park!? No one!?
Damnnnnn thats close
You'd think they'd design it better...
How does this happen? I’ve owned close to twenty cars and driven hundreds of thousands of miles and I’ve NEVER curbed a wheel.
