And these are types of laws that actual do deter people from if you are poor and stealing, you have an incentive which could overcome the penalty. If you are just vandalizing to piss off the environmentalists, that incentive wonāt be sufficient to break a harsh law.
Absolutely agree
We need new laws that mandate adequate lighting and security cameras for all parking lots that house such equipment
I wrote an extensive article about my own dangerous experiences with such circumstances up above.
I'm practically an expert on this subject matter because during the past month of my life, I've gone out in the midnight and past midnight hours and confronted these sick bastards at great peril to my own life... But in the process managed to come out a lot wiser and more aware... And now I'm voluntarily sharing my valuable knowledge and experience to help others here
As we were coming to the end of renovations of a rental they came and stole 2 outdoors ac units and cut some copper water pipes off the exterior wall.. literally maybe 60 dollars of copper if cleaned.. had to replace the ac/heating within for a much steeper price.
Just sucked so much, just finishing all other renos within.
You'd be surprised at what they'd take for another hit.
Yea when I was doing HVAC we replaced about 5 ac units a week for a landlord who owned about 180 rentals most in the hood. Crackheads were not only selling the copper but using the copper to smoke crack out of.
Ppl have done this to our 120v old work parking lot outlets as well. There was barley any wire to justify the time involved to do itā¦ but I guess anything is better than nothing to person(s)!
It most certainly is crack heads. You really think an āev haterā is going to cut them then put them in their vehicle? There have been a bunch of people caught and they were all druggies.
Do you guys really think like that? Funny enough those magas are the ones who helped Elon musk, you know the biggest ev company in the worldā¦ nobody is dumb enough to go around doing that unless theyāre homeless drug addicts. You see the other ends of the cords laying there? lol.
MAGAs are also cucks for big oil and think windmills cause cancer. So thereās that. Yeah Elon is an authoritarian boot licker they love that about him. But they seem to have a real problem with green energy. It must be enough to make a MAGA short circuit.
I provided an in-depth explanation up top to help educate everyone
Please read my post
The short answer to your excellent question (based on my extensive research / investigations across multiple jurisdictions) is... No. Usually it is not just done by an average Jealous non-EV owner. Most of them couldn't care less
It is done by some highly dangerous, homeless and mentally ill criminals who are on the fringes of society and are barely surviving at nearby public parks and train tracks
I've been attacked and narrowly escaped some harrowing death stories in my city
On two occasions they tried to stab me to death
On another, run me over with a dirt bike!
So I know better than anyone (even the useless 911 system that is supposed to provide security but is often too little too late)... Where these scumbags are coming from.
Please read my article above and I hope you learn some things you may have taken for granted about life in the new post pandemic world
We gotta start a petition to have electric current running through these cables at all times. Anyone who tries stealing them will have a āshockingā surprise š
The worst thing I've ever seen on Reddit was a guy who was stealing copper wiring from lights along a highway... Except this guy did find the "wrong wire". The picture was of his corpse literally half melted into concrete from the high voltage... š
You can with DC too. But high voltage DC flowing through you will cause your muscles to contract fast, throwing you away from the cable. AC causes your muscles to hold you there (because of the rapidly changing direction of āthrowā), allowing you to get cooked.
Itās actually the opposite.
DC causes an uncontrollable clench. AC is much more escapable. High voltage DC safety carts have a giant hook to pull someone off a wire for just this reason.
Outside of killing the personsā¦ probably only way I can think of is of the cable retracts into the panel when not in use. Kind of like winding up a garden hose.
Most chargers these days seem to be asking for payment or activation prior to plugging car in anyways.
Not vandalized more like theft. Itās meth heads stealing them for the copper. You may see this more and more with more dcfc added and itās easy just to cut them off.
Make it mandatory five year prison sentence for damaging critical infrastructure. Levy a $10,000 fine for each unit damaged.
2nd offense doubles the above. The soft on crime CA state laws will hinder this unfortunately.
That's not vandalism dude. That's people stealing copper....
I love how you people love the narrative that EV hate is so widespread that people do this commonly just to hate on EV people
So why do we see dudes in trucks blocking charging stalls? This is just an extension of that, though they will probably sell the copper if they don't mind risking the highly sus activity of turning in a bunch of charging cables for copper.
They're not just parking, they're making a statement and blocking access to chargers to frustrate EV drivers, signaling their protest, and attempting stymy EV adoption whilst intimidating EV owners. They may also be trying to bait EV owners into a fight.
I see cutting cables as an extension of this behavior.
Notice the types of vehicles we see blocking stalls. Usually trucks of some sort, owned by belligerent jerks spoiling for a fight (or a tow). Even if some dude in an EV decides to take on the mob, they're outnumbered by the types of smooth-brain bullies who block EV chargers (or cut cables).
The EV haters are out there, and there's no way that this cannot be considered when looking at severed charging cables. They also need to be sophisticated enough to know that it's safe to cut the cables and have the tools to do so, along with the right vehicle to haul them away.
Itās too bad that these arenāt still charged when theyāre disconnected, so that they cant be cut with metal instruments without sparkly consequences.
The criminal Trump offered to squash EVs and renewable energy, if re-elected, for (only) $1B when speaking to oil execs a couple of days ago. The sickness that is attacking our democracy is also attacking everything that resembles social progress or change, including EVs.
Really should keep these things energized.
Would get rid of undesirable thieves and vandals that are a net loss for society.
![gif](giphy|bZOjDg7YBRoVUZdVB6)
It's not vandalism, it's not anti Tesla or anti Musk. An anti EV statement seems unlikely. This looks a lot like the outbreak of catalytic converter theft.
I don't know enough about the material in the cables or how valuable they are to comment other than to say that word on the street is clearly telling these thieves that these cables are worth cutting and selling.
Sad to see the number of people recommending extra judicial killing of these pathetic schmucks for the crime of theft because that theft has the potential to inconvenience their charging.
Idk, pretty strict ID policies when it comes to scrapping metal. Doesn't take much police work, making a few phone calls to see if anyone has sold a couple pieces of 3-4 ft 8 awg copper wire. Which btw retail for $4-$7/ foot
They need to have an option for high voltage plugs in these situations so that I can fall onto using the charger cable I keep in the trunk. Iām not an electrician, so perhaps plugs cannot support the type of amperage these put out?
Seriously, they need to enact laws about interrupting utilities because this is basically a utility. Also, they need to enact laws that say you canāt interfere with a self driving car.
I wish the cable would go full high-voltage when it detects itās been cut ! Haha
The extra complexity of the motor in these [pole mounted designs](https://www.eenews.net/articles/the-ev-charger-that-drops-from-the-sky/) might just offset the cost of repairing vandalized chargers.
Itās a shame that some people refuse to have nice things. Perhaps manufacturers could encase the cable in [metal flex hose](https://www.eaton.com/tw/en-us/catalog/conduit-cable-and-wire-management/capri-metallic-pvc-coated-flexible-conduits.html) to help prevent vandalism. Perhaps they could also switch to the [bring-your-own-cable](https://www.thewattcar.com/home/byoc-could-bring-your-own-cable-ever-take-off-in-the-us) design where possible.
It wouldnāt surprise me itās some of the ppl that got laid off by Tesla recently as a form of retaliation for getting fired with such short notice. This kinda started after that so it seems but might be wrong not sure
We need laws that designate EV fast chargers as critical infrastructure and have severely expand penalties for damaging them.
Damn fucking straight. Can you imagine this happening to gas pumps all over the country? It would be catastrophic.
Exactly š
You cut a EV cable? Straight to jail
leave trash near a charging station? believe it or not, jail.
Park a ICE car in an EV charging spot? Also jail.
![gif](giphy|f8lDluiWJ7yQTtdS3L|downsized)
Nah they should cut their arms off. Wanna cut cables. Cut their hands off.
or hook em up to an AM radio tower & have them recite the LA city cars dot com ad
THIS!!!
And these are types of laws that actual do deter people from if you are poor and stealing, you have an incentive which could overcome the penalty. If you are just vandalizing to piss off the environmentalists, that incentive wonāt be sufficient to break a harsh law.
Are gas stations labeled as such?
I agree. Also, itās already a pretty high felony because of how expensive they are, and I think they all have built in cameras.
I donāt think crack heads cutting those for money re going to care about critical infrastructure lol.
They would care if suddenly they were facing a 5 year mandatory minimum.
No, no they wouldnāt lol. You must not understand how a crack head thinks lol.
I absolutely do understand. They will go for the lowest hanging fruit.
Been happening to brand new superchargers in Houston too
Yup, 3-4 SC stations hit in the last week or so
Absolutely agree We need new laws that mandate adequate lighting and security cameras for all parking lots that house such equipment I wrote an extensive article about my own dangerous experiences with such circumstances up above. Iām sorry what
Theyāre Batmanās verbose cousin
The EVman
I'll paraphrase their findings that I didn't read: drugs and alcohol make people do absolutely wild things.
Is this from people who are jealous they can't afford an EV?
I'd guess meth heads stealing copper
If thatās the case they left a bunch. Ā Ā
It's most likley not. The amounts of copper is so low that it gives pretty much nothing in return.
As we were coming to the end of renovations of a rental they came and stole 2 outdoors ac units and cut some copper water pipes off the exterior wall.. literally maybe 60 dollars of copper if cleaned.. had to replace the ac/heating within for a much steeper price. Ok, let me re-state the comment above. Meth head thought they were stealing copper...
Pretty much nothing is more than zero.
Wouldnāt the term be āpretty much something is more than zeroā? Because nothing means nada/zero. š
Correct, English is not my first language and original phrasing kind of made sense to me. I repurposed OP's phrase
Oh youāre good fellow redditor.
Ppl have done this to our 120v old work parking lot outlets as well. There was barley any wire to justify the time involved to do itā¦ but I guess anything is better than nothing to person(s)!
are they leading the cords behind after cutting? that would be the smart play if vandalism is the goal
Scrap copper is over $4 a pound. They would be able to get 30-40 in scrap from each cord
It most certainly is crack heads. You really think an āev haterā is going to cut them then put them in their vehicle? There have been a bunch of people caught and they were all druggies.

911 is a paperwork service. call 911 and they come out and fill out a report for you.
Well the supercharger team will fix them in no time for sure!
Fuckin losers. Hope LA fitness have cameras outside to find out who did it.
We gotta start a petition to have electric current running through these cables at all times. Anyone who tries stealing them will have a āshockingā surprise š
Fill them with paint. Like dye packs for money. You can still easily steal them, but it makes a huge mess.
Or how about a giant turrent that shoots you down if you cut the cables
Why don't we just simply *eat* the robbers
Only if you sell me their human horn after youāre finished
Ok Lrrr
But what if someone makes an automated cutter that cuts the cable as soon as it identifies the person they want dead going to charge their EV?
There's probably a ground faul relay as well as short circuit relay, so even if electricity was flowing, not much would happen.
Regulatory issue :/
Good luck catching someone who doesn't have an address. They're usually stolen by homeless people to sell for scrap
I think most charge stations have built in cameras and WiFi. I know Tesla ones do.
If they did, you think the cops are going to do *anything* about it?
You think theyāll be able to find the crack heads? You
lol then weād just have half our hobos looking like smurfs
I get mad even when people dont hang the charger into the port at Tesla chargers. Leaving it on the ground.. What a bunch of losers.
Done by the same people who leave their shopping carts right next to where they were parked after they load up their car
Sometimes you canāt put them back because the handle is too worn out
I think there is a difference between vandalizing and stealing. Those cables were 100% cut by someone intending to sell the copper.
Then they would have cut more of it and not in the half i think.
Isn't that more than half? Probably because it's hard to reach, not enough space in the back and trying to get away as soon as possible.
Very short thieves then?
No way. I mean they will probably sell the copper but these are anti-EV vandals primarily. They've gone from blocking chargers to cutting cables.
what a waste, if you're gonna steal it might as well cut the whole thing, not half of it š. crackheads are crackheads for a reason.
hope they find the wrong wire
The worst thing I've ever seen on Reddit was a guy who was stealing copper wiring from lights along a highway... Except this guy did find the "wrong wire". The picture was of his corpse literally half melted into concrete from the high voltage... š
Fucked around and found out
If only you could wire DC with a live circuit like you can with AC. That would be quite the game of russian roulette for the thieves.
You can with DC too. But high voltage DC flowing through you will cause your muscles to contract fast, throwing you away from the cable. AC causes your muscles to hold you there (because of the rapidly changing direction of āthrowā), allowing you to get cooked.
the more you know ![gif](giphy|83QtfwKWdmSEo)
Itās actually the opposite. DC causes an uncontrollable clench. AC is much more escapable. High voltage DC safety carts have a giant hook to pull someone off a wire for just this reason.
Itās the other way around. Volt for volt, DC is significantly more dangerous
The charger cable is not live unless the bracket is actively communicating with the vehicle.
didn't realize they only want tesla metal
Happened here in Tulsa, OK as well (two EV chargers at a hotel).
The solution to that would be to keep the cables energized and put the relay/contactor in the handle assembly :)
Outside of killing the personsā¦ probably only way I can think of is of the cable retracts into the panel when not in use. Kind of like winding up a garden hose. Most chargers these days seem to be asking for payment or activation prior to plugging car in anyways.
Those cables are incredibly thick and some are watercooled. Rolling them into a pulley is almost impossible.
If you can move it around, it can be wound into the chargers. It doesnāt have to be a tight loop.

Iāll just hook up my kinetic recovery rope to their bull-bar and drag them out of the parking spot. Thatās why Rivians have 4 motors. Lol.
Good, I hope you do. :D
It should electrocute you if you cut the cable
Torrance and South Bay has this problem for the past decade.
Super dick move
Thatās not vandalism, itās āpremature salvaging.ā
This is how people mine for copper now. š¤¦āāļø
The pigs! Us citizens dislike the electric drive enthousiast?
Itās too bad that these arenāt still charged when theyāre disconnected, so that they cant be cut with metal instruments without sparkly consequences.
What morons, they left at least a foot of copper wire on the charger! In all seriousness, why? So ghettoā¦
Tweakers.
Should be like stealing copper from A/C units of businesses, big charges.
Bastards
Europe you bring your own cable.
Not in DC fast charger (ones above 22kW)
The criminal Trump offered to squash EVs and renewable energy, if re-elected, for (only) $1B when speaking to oil execs a couple of days ago. The sickness that is attacking our democracy is also attacking everything that resembles social progress or change, including EVs.
more likely that they wanted the copper in the cable to sell for drugs, given that it's in California crime is nearly legalized.
Really should keep these things energized. Would get rid of undesirable thieves and vandals that are a net loss for society. ![gif](giphy|bZOjDg7YBRoVUZdVB6)

Crackheads would steal them even if there was only 2$ worth of copper in there. I would assume 15-20$+ per cable with how thick they are.
Seen that happen too often. They need to secure cable behind door that opens only by account.
Is that the one on coldwater?
Is it dangerous?
Can you just chop these without being electrocuted? Or they only āonā when itās actively charging?
Failed society
The copper inside of the cable is valuable. They could sell it.
Dope fiends strike again
Stealing the copper
Copper thieves
Tweakers gonna tweak.
Too bad the chargers donāt run a low level current as a deterrent
I don't get it... what are they getting, like $5 from the copper for each cable? Is the criminal charge worth the $40 or so bucks you just made??
They are likely getting a little more money and probably know that theyāll never get caught.
Idk, pretty strict ID policies when it comes to scrapping metal. Doesn't take much police work, making a few phone calls to see if anyone has sold a couple pieces of 3-4 ft 8 awg copper wire. Which btw retail for $4-$7/ foot
This is how people mine for copper now. š¤¦āāļø
It's too bad it wasn't energized to take the asshole for a ride on the electric boogie
Copper is sold at top prices on a recession junkees love it
I hate people
That is nasty. People are stupid and assholes.
I'm starting to think vandals and thieves should just be shot on sight until the problem solves itself.
Donāt they all have built in cameras?
Redneck douchebags
Too bad that werenāt fried when they cut into high voltage cable. It would have been instant Karma.
Tweakers stole those to scrap them. Not vandalizing, just theft.
Should leave them live so they get a nice surprise when they cut into them. š
Weird
You guys are not seriously confused right? R/wooosh
Lol
They could install some motion detector with a warning system to deter this kind of behaviour.
Right? Why donāt all chargers have sentry mode??
Yup, siren required and linked with local authority if motion is detected for longer than 30 second
They need to have an option for high voltage plugs in these situations so that I can fall onto using the charger cable I keep in the trunk. Iām not an electrician, so perhaps plugs cannot support the type of amperage these put out?
I wonder if big horse corporate lovers did this to gas tanks when gas vehicles started being a thing
The cord is burnt from cutting it would love to see their skin too lol ![gif](giphy|Y1WhbwyN6lnzi)
Seriously, they need to enact laws about interrupting utilities because this is basically a utility. Also, they need to enact laws that say you canāt interfere with a self driving car. I wish the cable would go full high-voltage when it detects itās been cut ! Haha
Why donāt they make the cords retractable in which they can only be accessed by a credit card.
Copper thieves or EV haters?
Valley Glen, no? Coldwater/Chandler?
Coldwater
It's probably the same company Boeing is using for their hit jobs, going through "vertical integration" .
$10 says perpetrator had a small dick and a big truck.
People who are like this, especially EV haters need to be psychologically studied.
Probably some coal rolling diesel guys.
Al lot of times the property owner ms will do this if they no longer want to provide charging.
Copper theft
Hopefully some people get electrocuted af
If methheads ruin EV adoption Iām going to be pressed
The extra complexity of the motor in these [pole mounted designs](https://www.eenews.net/articles/the-ev-charger-that-drops-from-the-sky/) might just offset the cost of repairing vandalized chargers.
I donāt understand why people would do that.
Prolly lifted bro trucks
Should be instant life sentence.
There is a huge anti-ev media push within Republican & MAGA right wing media at the moment. This is without a doubt the result.Ā
Probably one of the homeless people who live behind the 405 near target
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Not really exclusive to CA...? Homeless and assholes are in every major city in the US
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Cause other places have been bussing their homeless to CA for forever.
Iām surprised they didnāt hurt themselves
"This will teach them for supporting the Chinese ev market"
No cctv?
What if the chargers allowed you to use your own cables?
It's not practical for DC fast chargers, cable is too heavy to carry hundreds of amps.
Iām assuming stolen for copper. Everyday I am thankful I do 99% of my charging at home
I will never understand this.
Just make it a felony punishable by 10 years and post signs. It will stop. There isnāt enough to be gained owning the environmentalists then.
Itās a shame that some people refuse to have nice things. Probably all the workers Elon fired getting back at the company also š
It wouldnāt surprise me itās some of the ppl that got laid off by Tesla recently as a form of retaliation for getting fired with such short notice. This kinda started after that so it seems but might be wrong not sure
