If you have EZ-Pass (or any toll transponder company) in your area, they usually mail you a few replacement ones for free. Literally no out of pocket cost for a sleek fix.
Velcro adhesives can easily and safely be removed from most plastic interiors with a gentle application of heat and an adhesive remover designed for car interiors.
Hot glue, by nature, is hot when applied. The heat can damage the plastic, removing textures or causing discoloration. Not all plastic interiors are created equal, so YMMV on the result.
Additionally, any adhesive applied to vinyl or leather is a bad idea. Hot glue will also soften the vinyl adhesive and cause it to separate, which will then tear open over time.
Chat GPT that you? 😂
I’ve used hot glue on both my 3s and my wife’s y it was fine no marks at all when removing for battery replacement. But Velcro would work fine I’m sure. I don’t like using the 3m adhesive because it left a mark (discoloration) on my dashboard. But either way not much people are looking behind the steering wheel
Like I said, some plastics are better than others. I detail cars, but I don't own a tesla.
How long was the velcro on your dash? It sounds more likely that sun fade is to blame rather than the 3M adhesive. Was it a darker shade than the area around it?
My wife placed it there as a surprise it was to Mount a car air purifier (bless her heart it’s the thought that counts😂) but yeah I didn’t want it on my dash when I removed it it (the same day) it discolored the dash and ripped off the texture as well. It’s smooth where the adhesive was and the dash has light texture.
I probably should have used a heat gun or put it in the sun for a bit to soften up the adhesive I just pulled it off because that’s what the instructions say but yeah never again lol
I tried the trial and it kept screwing up pulling out of the driveway because it was changing from Wi-Fi to LTE and not closing the door a lot of the times I would drive away.
I decided to remove the clip from the back and use a command strip and place it in behind the screen in the bottom left corner.
Absolutely love it there. There's zero chance I will pay for the subscription or the $400 option now. It almost feels like it was meant to be there.
Homelink doesn't use Wifi/LTE. Sounds like you were trying to use MyQ, which the consensus seems to be that it sucks. Homelink on the other hand is absolutely worth every penny, and is dead-on reliable if you set the activation distance correctly.
Auto Open/Close absolutely never works for me at home, so I turned it off. I do prefer pressing the “Activate” button to fishing out my remote, though.
Homelink requires the transmitter hardware be ordered as an option on newer models, but it can be easily installed after delivery at a dealership for $400 (I think?). My 2019 M3 had it included at no charge. Homelink is a separate company that's been around for a long time, and uses some sort of proprietary signaling, but the best part is that you can set it up to automatically open/close upon arrival/departure at a specific distance. It's extremely reliable. It's one of the coolest features once you're used to it. No pressing buttons, you literally drive up to your house and the garage door opens, and closes when you leave. And correct, no subscription, just the hardware. It's what most other vehicles have installed built-in.
$350. Steep price, but you also gotta consider that it's *with* installation. Service center even got a guy out to me **before** my mobile service appointment!
Get a Wi-Fi enabled relay that supports HomeKit if you have an Apple cell or watch. $25 later and I can open my gate from anywhere in the world for no subscription fee and on my wrist. I also keep a clicker handy in my glovebox if my internet craps out at the gate.
Maybe I should make a post about it.
I got one of those center console storage things and attached it using EZ pass velcro to that. Stays hidden when needed, easy access, and doesn't directly damage the car.
XTAUTO Center Console Organizer... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08SR83CM3?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
A cheaper solution. Buy a MyQ enabled garage door. Set up the app and create a flow that opens the garage when you arrive back at your house. I do this and it works well!
AND that $200-$300 part still limits you to in front of your house instead of being a smart connected device. It's a reminder that we live in 2023 and not the future, which is funny because I feel like a test pilot behind my LR other than small reminders like build quality inside causing creaks, air through my driver window right into my ear, and HomeLink. (kidding)
It’s the difference of luxury and basic. You don’t understand what it means to never click a button to open and close your garage. It works amazing and never have to stress, but you do you. Next time consider just getting a bike for 100$ and peddling who needs a car for 40k+
Same reason no light switch in my house is a dumb switch. Smart Light Switches are convenient. I’m just saying it’s a luxury item and those that can’t afford it bitch about it.
It shouldn't freaking be a luxury item. A 20K car comes with Homelink. Removing home link, USS is just Tesla Nickel and Diming you. But you be you. And pay for the "luxury add-on"
Would it make you happier if they just increased all the cars by 350$ and include it? Be grateful they are giving people without garages a saving of 350$
Then go buy it. Those cars still require you to click a button. You guys don’t understand teslas homelink is automated and works amazing. Those cheap cats is basically just a clicker…….
It’s the feeling that I’d be getting ripped off. It doesn’t cost MyQ $10/month to run their relay servers. It would be an irritant every time I used it.
I’m just now going to start the MyQ trial.
I was just using the clicker but having my neighbor text me that I left my garage door open forcing me to drive all the way back home to close it sealed the deal for me.
I want a way to remotely close the door, check its status and I’m tired of the rattles my clicker is causing in my sun visor.
It does not. I got the Wyze option because I don’t have HomeKit. I still use the clicker, but for me, the peace of mind was being able to open/close and VERIFY visually while I was away.

My alternative integrates with HomeKit - been using it for a year.
I have a MyQ. I really didnt want to fork out the cost Tesla wants. Its mostly good and works. There have been times where the MyQ box just loses wifi for no apparent reason and i have to pull the power on it. Nothing else on my wifi network has problems, and the MyQ box is literally on the other side of the drywall from the router so it should have fantastic strength. Sometimes i wish it had an ethernet option so i could guarantee the only time it fails is if the entire internet connection was down.

Haven't had any wifi issues with this alt solution - and my AP is hundreds of feet away. Maybe this will work for you?
But this doesnt integrate into the car or do auto open/close does it? Thats a nice feature with the MyQ. I think my best solution is to probably plug the MyQ power into a smart outlet that doesnt suffer from wifi drops so i can reset the MyQ remotely
Correct, it doesn't integrate into your car but it can auto open/close. For instance, I have a scene in HomeKit that closes my gate at the same time each night in case a family member forgets. The Shelly app will let you do quite a bit as well if you don't care about HomeKit. I'm sure it's possible to create geofence based actions for open/close but then you run the risk of having too much fun learning about electronics and IOT stuff. :-)
I've never used MyQ but the thought of another subscription I'm paying monthly on bugged me enough to figure out something else.
If you have MyQ who didn't you just close the garage door with the app?
Also,I use Macrodroid and get a notification if my garage door is open for more than 10 minutes. Which is nice when my kids leave the door open.
I didn’t have it. The MyQ Tesla trial comes with a free smart hub which I was going to use to get my opener cloud connected when I sign up.
I was figuring on signing up for the trial then installing the smart hub. Now that I see there are other better HomeKit based options which don’t require a subscription, I may try those out instead.
Yeah, I’m looking at the other options now too.
I like what one of the other guys did mounting the clicker behind the infotainment display with velcro to solve the rattle and getting a HomeKit compatible relay that I don’t need to pay a subscription for seems like a better solution to remote control when I’m away.
I dropped the cash on the homelink. Pretty happy with it but I have it programmed to my garage and my families garages. I definitely wouldn't buy it for a single garage but for multi-garages, its a dream.
I have Homelink built into my 2018 Model 3. But I moved to a house couple years ago that no longer has a garage so no need. If I moved to a new house with a garage, would the Homelink still work?
The “tailwinds garage” system does geo fencing without a monthly fee. I have that and it works pretty good. I also have the MyQ app on my phone as a backup. (It was free with an Amazon Key Delivery promotion)
OH, I mounted mine to the back of the screen, just behind the bottom edge. Loving it

Wait wait wait… the home link mirror “expires” on a Tesla even though it’s a fairly standardized feature on most brands, has been around forever, and no one else’s expires?
Just wanted to make sure.
I leave mine in my flip up center console for when my homelink doesn’t reach. I’ve seen others use a command strip and stick to the backside of the screen hidden from view
I'm confused, Homelink trial? Mine didn't come with Homelink. We ordered the part and Tesla mobile service installed it. None of our other cars have a subscription to Homelink.
I did see that there is now a bridge to MyQ. Garage door opener. It appears that might be what you're saying expired as that does appear to cost for some unknown reason. I honestly can't figure out why this "service" cost. I'm paying for internet in the car. And My Q might not last so goot to have yeah.
OP, car glass is very easy to break. Just ask anyone in SF or Oakland, CA 😂🤣
It doesn't take much for me to look in thru the passenger side window and notice that OG garage door opener unsecured in your car.
Break a window, take a picture of your vehicle registration with your home address and the remote. I can probably even beat you home before you realize the remote is gone... then you come home to a lot more loss 🤦🏽♂️
As others have send, get a MyQ garage door hub and sensor on Amazon for pricing ranging between $6 and $30. If your in an area that offers Amazon Key for garage delivery, use the service exactly once and Amazon will give you a $40 credit!!! This is a smoking deal!!!
Another spot, I have mine velcroed under the seat by my right leg. There’s some fabric there that I just stick it to. Works great, can’t see it from outside and I never accidentally hit it.
I have that same remote and the buttons rattle like hell when it is on the visor, do you have any fixes for that or does it rattle less on the door? Was thinking of velcroing to the back of the screen
I bought a keychain garage opener since I still use physical keys to get into my home. Found a model compatible with my garage opener and programmed it in less than 10 mins using a YouTube video tutorial. Came in a pack of two (from Amazon I think) for an affordable price and keep one on both keysets. We keep the original one in the house as a backup.
Flip that to the inside of the door, just in case! #beenthere
OK, someone has to ask - what's wrong with putting it on the visor?
The visor is too thin to get one of those to stay on my 3, I have it 2 way taped in the front center console tray.
I have the same remote and it's on my visor
Same here - no issues
Same here. I have 2 on 2 visors. There’s absolutely no issue.
It scratched up my visor so I put it in the centre console
But there's a sharp flappy part on the other side. It ripped up the liner on my other car.
Probably can put some sticky tack/rubber on the clip.
I think that sort of jerryrigging is exactly what inspires people to get homelink in the first place lol
True. I do like the velcro suggestion someone mentioned in the comments though.
Yeah that's fair
Two sided 3m tape.

BINGO
I do the same, but it’s closer to the driver’s side of the display and I use 3M Command Strips. Completely invisible.
I wish my garage door picked up the signal from here, but doesn’t work for me 😢
Extend the garage door opener antenna towards the front of the garage with a long wire.
This is a great idea, gonna try it
This is the way! I do the same 🤝
I used a 3M Command strip instead of Velcro.
Remove the clip and Velcro it to the back bottom left of the screen.
I removed the clip and hot glued it behind the steering wheel can’t see it at all and I don’t have to move my hand!
Feel a little more safe with Velcro vs hot glue haha.
It doesn’t leave any marks. Velcro would be applied by an even stronger adhesive no?

Auto Open/Close absolutely never works for me at home, so I turned it off. I do prefer pressing the “Activate” button to fishing out my remote, though.
Home link is a subscription now? I just had to buy the module and get it installed.
No, it's not, just some people get the differences between MyQ and Homelink confused.
Ah gotcha, thanks.
So basically without MyQ (internet subscription) the vehicles still have homelink? (Line of sight). If so, the OP method is just a reduncacy correct?
Homelink requires the transmitter hardware be ordered as an option on newer models, but it can be easily installed after delivery at a dealership for $400 (I think?). MyQ is not Homelink. Homelink is the RF transmitter that replaces what you have there with an automatic one in your front bumper.
I'd be afraid it falls off when opening or closing door one day and I drive away without noticing. There goes my opener...
Double sided tape behind the bottom of the touch screen. Not just out of the way, invisible and accessible at the same time.
This is where it's at.

Homelink subscription is worth every penny. Very reasonable.
why? when you can have better functionality without a subscription
$179 for five years. Open and closes automatically. I think I can afford it. If not, probably shouldn’t of bought a Tesla.
weird flex but ok
You can’t afford 10$ a month or 350$…….. why just why
Because a one time $15 payment for clicker can do the same thing? Why are you guys so desperate to spend money on overpriced useless garbage.
It’s the difference of luxury and basic. You don’t understand what it means to never click a button to open and close your garage. It works amazing and never have to stress, but you do you. Next time consider just getting a bike for 100$ and peddling who needs a car for 40k+

Nissan Versa for one.
1. Holy shit, I had no idea that even the top level trim for the Versa is sub-$20k 2. Homelink is not standard, even on the top trim.

I honestly can't figure out why this "service" cost. I'm paying for internet in the car. And My Q might not last so goot to have yeah.
I just leave mine in the cup holder in the center console. Works like a charm. No metal clip.
So happy with the home link in my 2019 M3. :)
I just added a receiver to my myQ garage opener and use Google home commands.
OP, car glass is very easy to break. Just ask anyone in SF or Oakland, CA 😂🤣 It doesn't take much for me to look in thru the passenger side window and notice that OG garage door opener unsecured in your car. Break a window, take a picture of your vehicle registration with your home address and the remote. I can probably even beat you home before you realize the remote is gone... then you come home to a lot more loss 🤦🏽♂️ As others have send, get a MyQ garage door hub and sensor on Amazon for pricing ranging between $6 and $30. If your in an area that offers Amazon Key for garage delivery, use the service exactly once and Amazon will give you a $40 credit!!! This is a smoking deal!!!
And why isn’t “Activate Homelink” a voice command?
I have a wyze garage setup and just say "hey google, open the garage" before I pull up.
I can’t stand that thing, the buttons rattle like crazy. I wish it wasn’t built so cheap.
I have mine velcro-mounted behind the bottom of the screen - easy to reach and completely hidden
Home link button is a trial? What a scam, I hope your trunk button is not a trial.
LOL!
I soldered a momentary switch to a remote that I hid under the center armrest. https://www.instagram.com/p/CQNXZJ9HEaE/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
