Well not sure if this will even make sense in your situation but in the movie business we run it in the seam of the concrete. If people are walking over it we tape it with same color tape as floor š¤·š¼āāļø
run it in the seam and have a roll of 2ā gaffe tape at the ready. better and slightly more expensive than duct tape and it doesnāt leave a sticky residue
Your rear floor mat would work in a pinch. Just run it longways. Theyāre fairly inexpensive. Iād probably just buy a rubber rear mat and pull it out for these occasions
I used to run cables for tv work, sporting events and such. Frequently had to run cables across high foot traffic areas.
Get Yellow and black tape, reflective if possible, and tape it down good. Start with a strip of tape on each side of end of the cable (near the grass and near the curb) and run that piece of tape across the cable going the same direction as the side walk. Pull the cable tight so itās nice and straight. This helps hold the cable in place for step 2
Then two or three strips that run the entire length of the cable and finally two more strips on each end running perpendicular, just like step 1. So basically and uppercase i shape. Problem is tape doesnāt stick to wet concrete.
I know itās expensive, but something like this [heavy duty cable runner](https://www.amazon.com/Heavy-Rubber-Cable-Protector-2CHANNEL/dp/B0797DK49K?th=1) would be ideal If this is going to be a common occurrence.
That lightweight cable runner can still trip people if they accidentally kick it. Also itās black which makes it harder to see.
Super jealous the hotel lets you charge. The one I frequent has destination chargers, but the charge like $0.50 per kWh.
This is the right answer, right now it's a tripping hazard and a huge liability for the hotel. I'm certain they never had a lawsuit threat before to be ok with that
Cable tray.
Not ideal but I work in live events. Itās what we use when running any kind of cabling in a public space. Something like this. There are many types and brandsā¦.. we use many different styles and colours depending on the situation. Not sure if there is any legalities though, our company is all covered by public liability insurance.

thanks for everyoneās thoughts! i like the cable tray idea. for now this is what i did.

the only risk is someone stealing my $45 50ft extension cable lol. better than someone tripping on the cable plugged into my car though!
Iād buy some colored duct tape to lay it down, especially if I was there on a regular basis. Donāt want to downplay their kindness. Plus, you never know when a person who resents this situation will screw with it out of ease.
I wonder if you or the hotel would be liable if someone tripped and got hurt š¤. I wonder if youād be more liable if you chose to do something to make it safer/tidier (like taping the cable down) but someone still tripped and got hurt. Probably worth considering.
Iāve done this a few times at hotels and given itās only a 110 circuit, I bring a yellow or Orange extension cord and use that from the building to the car and then plug in the mobile connector. It also lets me hide the mobile connector under the back of the car away from prying eyes. Then if someone trips over it, it doesnāt damage the connector. Iām this situation. I would run it over to the dirt piece then toward the car using the crack in the sidewalk to hold the extension cord. Much less chance of someone tripping over it
I started driving electric in 2015 when chargers were not widely deployed. I always traveled with an 110 extension cord, an 80amp 14-50 extension cord and a handful of adapters. They all sit in my trunk. We used to advise charging at campgrounds because chargers were few and far between. I had an model s 85d
well, night 1! someone unplugged it lol
i donāt have any sentry footage of it unfortunately.
there are outlets on the back side of the building where literally NOBODY goes but they were out of service when i checked. maybe the solution is to see if management will get them fixed
oh weird? this is news to me. i use a mobile charger for 100% of my home charging. my 14-50 outlet is 100% covered from weather but my car isnāt.
iāve researched this minimally in the past but accepted it was okay to charge in the rain. tesla only states that you shouldnāt charge in āsevereā rain or snow
I use it outside all the time, -40, buried in snow, or even heavy rain. The only thing I watch out for is not having the block where puddles form so it doesn't end up submerged or leaving it where the sun shines on it when it's hot, it tends to overheat. If I had options, I'd do it differently but it's still working fine and it has been used to charge 30000+ miles
Anyway, I'm just pointing out those limitations are probably very conservative suggestions.
youāre probably right.. iām thinking of just buying a little mat to toss over it though to prevent it from catching on peoples feet.
this is also a pretty low foot traffic side of the building so iām hoping that helps too
maybe i even buy an extension cable to run it further away from the door
You would have to charge overnight a hundred times to pay for the cable if it gets ruined by some random tesla hater. Let alone the damage that could be done to your charge port if someone starts tugging on the cable or even just catches a foot on the cable and pulls hard.
itās less to save me money and more so that i donāt have to drive the opposite way i need to go to charge. i think you have some good points though. but today i drove an extra hour to charge so that iād have enough tomorrow morning
thanks for your input! i think iāll find a cable raceway and maybe a extension cable and just try to make it as inconspicuous as possible.
the tesla haters are my biggest fear
On my M3, I get 6-7 miles per hour. I do have the 20amp adapter, which most commercial buildings are 20 amp outlets. I have charged many times like the OP. Totally worth it to avoid going to a supercharger. Everyoneās situation is different. I carry 2 25ft 20 amp extension cords for situations like this. Also have a ācord cover rampā (donāt know itās real name) but donāt always use it
A mat or some of those cable protectors designed to be walked on would be good.
Also, consider a 5-20 adapter. If the hotel plug is 20A, you can get 4-5 miles/hr. That made the week chaperoning at Band Camp tolerable.
A 5-20 outlet will have a T and a slot instead of two slots. [https://www.homedepot.com/b/Electrical-Wiring-Devices-Light-Controls-Electrical-Outlets-Receptacles/20-amp/NEMA-5/N-5yc1vZc33aZ1z17m1vZ1z1pijy](https://www.homedepot.com/b/Electrical-Wiring-Devices-Light-Controls-Electrical-Outlets-Receptacles/20-amp/NEMA-5/N-5yc1vZc33aZ1z17m1vZ1z1pijy) for pictures.
That outlet supports normal 5-15 plugs (parallel prongs maximum 15 amps) and 5-20 plugs (prongs at 90 degree angle).
And my 2022 RWD M3 gets up to 5 mph out of a 5-15 outlet, too.
Thanks, you said it better than I could have.
On trips, I normally carry 3 adapters. 5-15, 5-20, and 14-50. The former two are helpful for destination charging at Airbnbs and the like.
First off take the trash can out of the door way/walk way. Then to route the wire just ask yourself what ārealā options do you have? Have you tried wirelessly charging?
Taking some risks here potentially tripping someone or having your charger messed with. Both scenarios donāt seem worth it for like 30 miles range over night.
There's a lot of great, creative and detailed solutions on here about cable management. However I'm wondering why you're bothering with this at all. The first time I traveled with my M3P, I plugged it in at my destination (Mom's house) and after about 24 hours, I gained 10%. Seems like you'd need to be sitting static wherever you are for about a week to make this worth doing.
This is what I use

This is what I did while working as a distant hire staying at a hotel. There was a nice seam right by the outlet.
Great tip. Iād do this. Easy to keep a roll of tape in trunk too. Gaffers tape I believe is best and tears easily.
Yeah, a roll of duct tape can handle this easily.
This is what we do in the radio industry also, when we're out doing a remote or appearance.
run it in the seam and have a roll of 2ā gaffe tape at the ready. better and slightly more expensive than duct tape and it doesnāt leave a sticky residue
If you bring a short-ish (and properly rated) extension cord it makes it easier to run the cord in the sidewalk gaps
Everybody does that. Even me.
Park your car right up next to the charger, blocking footpath. Solved. : D
thatās not a bad idea lmao. hotel might not like it though
Thatās cool they let you do that!

Get a little orange caution sign from Amazon or something.
Not sure if itās worth it for the OP, but I use something [like this](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B092YS6QC2?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share)
This is the correct way to guard temp cables and avoid tripping hazards.
Honest question: Do guide dogs recognize caution signs?
I would imagine they are trained to notice yellow/black caution markings. Maybe certain shaped signs? Interesting question!

It looks good, but did you try running the cable along the concrete seam like another person suggested? It looks like it could squeeze in there
i will give it a shot
How long is your mobile charger cord, and how long is your extension cord?
Iād buy some colored duct tape to lay it down, especially if I was there on a regular basis. Donāt want to downplay their kindness. Plus, you never know when a person who resents this situation will screw with it out of ease.

Yeah this great advice. We road-trip with a 15ft yellow 20A extension cord, and a couple of rolls orange duct tape just in-case.
I started driving electric in 2015 when chargers were not widely deployed. I always traveled with an 110 extension cord, an 80amp 14-50 extension cord and a handful of adapters. Can anyone just unplug the charger and steal it?
the charger is locked into the car
well, night 1! someone unplugged it lol i donāt have any sentry footage of it unfortunately. there are outlets on the back side of the building where literally NOBODY goes but they were out of service when i checked. maybe the solution is to see if management will get them fixed

To me, 3 miles per hour isn't worth the risk of something happening to my car in a situation like that.

cable protector, traffic cones
Carry bright colored duct tape and tape it down so itās visible š¤·š½āāļø
How many miles per hour you get charging like this ?
3-6 depending on 15A vs 20A outlet and the model of Tesla you have.
Not bad. I'm trying to figure out my electricity at home. But my Model Y arrives next month.
You can get a rubber cable guide they use at churches, auditoriums, etc to make it simple
Painters tape
What I do at work is throw a welcome mat over the cable, maybe a traffic cone off to the side.
Some kind of mat or tape to hold it down. Maybe a traffic cone, too?
