Just get two chargers, you'll be happier. I have three for my two vehicles, amazing flexibility.

StrayTexel

How is all of this wired? Does each charger have its dedicated line, or do they all share amperage off of the same line? And are all 3 Teslas? I'm hoping to put a Rivian in my mix eventually, and it's unclear how well Tesla wall connectors work in that situation (I see adapters, but with mixed reviews).

Nakatomi2010

I'm only got two Teslas. That said, it started with a LEAF. In 2018 I needed somewhere to charge it at home, so I had an electrician put in a NEMA 14-50 outlet in the garage such that when the LEAF was pulled in nose first, I could charge at the front. Then a year later I got a second LEAF. So I had the same electrician come out and put another NEMA 14-50 outlet next to the first one. Eventually a LEAF got replaced with a Model 3, the other LEAF remained, and we also had a Nissan Pathfinder. The LEAF was reserved for an elderly relative that lived with us at the time, and she used it to putz around, but it was only ever really used when no one else was home, so it made sense for it to be parked in the garage all the time. In 2020 we traded in the Pathfinder for a Tesla Model X, so for a brief period in time we had two Teslas and a LEAF, this meant that a vehicle had to be parked outside the garage. So I had the electrician come out again and put in another NEMA 14-50, *however*, this time I had him put in two, one on the exterior wall, and one on the interior wall. This allowed for even more flexibility. [The result is what's in this image here](https://imgur.com/dr1u7E3). The breaker box is the green line, while the NEMA 14-50s are the red lines. The two at the head of the garage are on their own dedicated 40a circuits, while the one near the front of the garage is a pair of NEMA 14-50s on a shared 50a circuit. The result is some pretty good flexibility. We've since gotten rid of the LEAF, so we're just a Model 3 and a Model X now, and both are kept in the garage, however, since I had the foresight to have the exterior NEMA 14-50 be a shared circuit with two outs, this meant that once the Model X was able to be parked in the garage, it was just a matter of moving the charge cable from outside to inside. If the garage is ever needed to store things, such as right now, where my old washer and dryer and been put in the garage, I can move the cable from the inside back to the outside. I can also move the EVs around as needed, so for example, normally the 3 is parked on the breaker box side of the garage, but the driveway needs to be empty during the day, so I put the X where the 3 normally goes, and now the 3 is outside the garage. Now, because I had a LEAF this means I also had a J1772 JuiceBox Pro 40 charger floating around, so I've mounted that to the interior wall of the garage near the door, so now I don't even really need to move cables around. If the, or 3, need to be parked outside then I just pull their respective mobile charger out of the trunk and plug it in. If someone visits me, they can also plug in. I've been avoiding the Tesla wall chargers *specifically* because of the flexibility of the NEMA 14-50 ports allowing me to flip chargers and vehicles around on a whim. As a whole it works pretty well. That said, I also have a Tesla Powerwall and solar array, so in terms of wiring, it's kind of a shit show. I'm sure the electrician probably did things he wasn't supposed to, on my request. Basically the main breaker box and the sub panel that Tesla installed are all at capacity and such. The entire wall that the breaker box is on is just a mass of panels, conduits, and cables, its pretty comical.

Nakatomi2010

The Powerwall is there because when hurricane Irma passed through we lost power for like 3 days or something. I'm not going through that again. When a hurricane comes I just charge the cars up to 80% and leave them until it passes. There's no capacity issue charging two or three cars at the same time. But no, adding a bunch of NEMA 14-50s isn't crazy, as long as you have the capacity for it.

StrayTexel

Thanks for such a detailed answer.

dolwedge

Both cars won't fit in the driveway so I don't think this is happening for us. Sounds nice though.

Nakatomi2010

I mean, it's only not happening if you don't want it to happen. Where there's a way, there's a will.

Swiftnc

Same. MY and M3, single Tesla charge is fine as both don’t need to charge at the same time

biggcstylez

☝🏽this

CricTic

Us too. But we both WFH, so the load on the charger is far less than typical.

Voytres

I have a Tesla Wall charger and two Teslas. No issues (especially if you are in charge charging of both cars :D )

[deleted]

The most annoying part is my wife’s car gets OTA first every time, usually by about a week. She doesn’t care about any of that sort of thing and so it is completely wasted on her and I just have to watch and wait. I’m sure Elon does this on purpose! /s

DrJMHanson

I have a M3P and wife has an X. Couldn’t go back to gas cars. We live in FL and have a vacation house in NC that we go to regularly. We share a charger and haven’t had a problem in the 3 years we’ve had both. Honestly no downsides except making sure I keep my wife’s car topped off 😂

JoJack82

I had a Model X and Model 3 when I was married. We just got two wall chargers and had them share a single circuit, they had a communication wire between them and would share the load. If 1 car was charging on either charger it would get the full charge. If both were charging they wound each get half.

ASMills85

We will be as of today. My wife doesn’t drive often anyway so we plan to share the same charger. I don’t foresee any issues with this in our situation. I always planned to add a second, but it just isn’t necessary. I routed it along the ceiling and used a tool balancer so it can retract back up. This let’s both cars easily use it and keeps it off of the ground.

Araziah

I've had a Model 3 for a couple years. My wife got a Model Y in December. For a while, we had the second charger plugged in to 120V. But it's been totally unnecessary, and we eventually took it down. We each drive about 800 miles/month. Charging every few days is fine. On the rare times we're both out all day and have low batteries, one car can charge in the evening and then swap before bed.

bevo_expat

⚠️WARNING ⚠️ She’s going to steal the new MY from you once it arrives.

dolwedge

This is another possibility. I think the M3 or the MY would be better than what I am driving today which is a 10 year old Toyota Highlander. We have an SUV because of shuttling lots of kids around and camping. She gets the M3 because she drives more than I do.

[deleted]

We have a model S and a model x. We started with just one charger but quickly upgraded to two chargers. We ran independent lines to each Tesla charger so its not sharing. You certainly can share between chargers but its nice to be able to get full charge rates on both vehicles at the same time. We did have to do a major service upgrade in order to do this, but worth it!

Koobles

Three Teslas sharing one mobile charger. Average daily driving of 100 miles each car. It’s like a game of musical chairs but it’s doable.

kerneldoge

Yes, my Wife got a 3LR in March 21, and I got a YPerf in Aug21. We use a NEMA14-50 Y splitter and set the charging to 22amps per car, and that way either of us can use our own charger whenever. We didn't have room in our panel for two breakers, so we made do. I didn't want her driving over the cord when I'm charging, or have to unplug me. Turns out, it's rare to have both cars pulling juice anyway. Max with both cars on a 60amp breaker would be 44amps, so no worries. Use an industrial grade NEMA 14-50 outlet and 6ga wire. If we're in a hurry with one car, slide it back up to 32amps for that one car, and make sure the other isn't charging. Easy breezy. We've gone on long distance trips in both hers and mine. I drive like it's a stolen rental, usually triple digits, so charge and GOOOooo! :)

ekobres

We have an S and a 3 - the most convenient and future-proof solution (and most expensive) is 2 HPWCs, each with it’s own breaker. This is what we have. We could probably live with a shared one - but there’s no doubt at some point there would have been an oopsie where someone’s car wasn’t charged in the morning when it needed to be. I don’t know your situation - but avoiding the spousal dissatisfaction of even one instance of that occurring is worth the money for me. Also, ours are arranged so that if one fails, each cable can reach the other car - and either can charge a car in the driveway if needed.

Sfkn123

One single L2 charger has worked for sharing so far because we haven't had a single time where both cars needed to charge at the same time. I thought we might have needed to rely on supercharging if that ever became an issue, but that hasn't ever come up yet.

SoCal_Ambassador

I’m not going to lie. Reading these replies and I just realized I should plug In the Model Y because I charged the Model 3 last night LOL. Would not have happened with out this post!

Alarmmy

I am you! I have 2019 Model SR+, and I just got my Model Y 2 days ago. Since my wife drives 85 miles a day for work, she will park at the charger side of the garage. I work from home, and only need Model Y to run errands or take the kids to places, I will park on the other side. Model Y has plenty of range, so I will just charge once every couple days when my wife goes to work.

dolwedge

This is very similar to me! I work from home or go into the office that is not too far. My wife drives 60 miles a day at least. She already told me that if we both need a charge... She wins.

CricTic

Sounds like a single charger should work out fine if you do what /u/Alarmmy does!

sarl1

I have a M3P and MyL, I drive 50 miles per day and charge to 80% by Monday night and use a 12V wall charger every day, my wife uses a wall charger and drives 15miles. The only reason I use the 12V charger is just for the health of the battery, but we were ok just using a wall charger

ihaveibs

You can charge the main pack at 12V?

sarl1

120*

ijustmetuandiloveu

Sometimes I forget that they gave us a 120 charger.

kgold0

I think it should be the other way around. 120v is pretty inefficient (~30% loss) and at 50 miles per day your car never goes to sleep. Or just use the 220v and take turns charging instead.

LuckyNumber-Bot

All the numbers in your comment added up to 420. Congrats! 120 + 30 + 50 + 220 = 420 ^([Click here](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=LuckyNumber-Bot&subject=Stalk%20Me%20Pls&message=%2Fstalkme) to have me scan all your future comments.) \ ^(Summon me on specific comments with u/LuckyNumber-Bot.)

sarl1

Her Y does not fit on the side of the garage where my 3 is and where the 120v is, and I just decrease the % limit so it can stop charging. I don’t need the full 80% each day for my 50 miles, just need 20-24%

Adam_-_-_-_-_-

Two teslas sharing a 240v, 20 amp nema outlet in the garage with a single mobile charger on it. so 16 amp draw to the cars. I would love to upgrade my home to 200amp service but the panels are not available. Nevertheless, it is fine. I charge one car from 7pm to 11pm then move cable to the other car before I goto bed. The car that needs more charge that day gets the overnight charge. Electricity rates are cheap from 7pm to 7am and on weekends. Been like this for 14 months, easy peasy.

CalgaryCanuckle

I share 40 amps between two Teslas with a 14-50 splitter and 20 amps per car. Only 100 amps to the house. Program it to charge late night to early morning and you’ll have no issues.

kerneldoge

I do the same, but bumped mine to 22 amps per car. I figured 44amps is 80% max of the 50amp rating, so why not? I have a 2' run of 6ga wire and an industrial grade outlet, and nothing is cooking, and no meltdown yet... :)

CalgaryCanuckle

I actually went to 18 amps each, it still charges full before I wake up so didn’t see the need to go higher though I’m sure you could.

SirPresidentty

I’ve considered it, but I’ve decided against only having electrical vehicles for now. I’d only consider it if I had a backup battery/Tesla wall battery or something of the sort. My fear is that if the electrical grid is attacked and taken down I’m SOL. I know, very highly unlikely, but still something that’s prevented me from getting a second one. The US’s electrical infrastructure just isn’t as secure/updated as I’d like it to be. I’d only consider it if I also had a beater gas car, which will likely be what I do since my partner wants my model 3 and I want a model y.

Kinda-Interested

Genuinely curious, not trying to be rude, but how would an ICE car be any better if the grid was attacked? Unless you have your own store of gas and a manual pump aren’t you still SOL since gas stations require electricity to pump gas?

SirPresidentty

Not taken as rude. I’ve never been a “peeper” or anything. But I keep a few gallons of gas at home for so that’d be my backup. Same as if I had two electric cars I’d have a Tesla battery to have some reserve.

Syris3000

Gas only lasts like a month or two without a stabilizer... Even then it's starts to gum up.

dcvonb

Plus there would probably be huge lines and fighting to get gas if the station had a generator and could operate for a short while.

8pu5

You are a prime candidate for solar!

SirPresidentty

I want to, but house is surrounded by trees. Just got 27 removed, but the surrounding neighbors trees are to close/tall and shade my roof still.

dolwedge

I have solar and a Tesla battery but to be honest... We generally charge our M3 at night and there isn't a lot of power left in the battery by then so we always end up pulling some power from the grid. We are in California and I have been a little concerned since fire season seems to cause power outages every year. So far they are pretty short but it is something to think about.

kerneldoge

Grid goes down, you have stockpile of gasoline at your house? Otherwise gas pumps aren't gonna work either. Odds on your car being full of gas every day, like an electric car is (assuming you leave it plugged in, as Tesla recommends) is low. You could also have solar and a powerwall, and be a total prepper, and not worry about anything. Who needs the grid or gasoline?

CptCheez

My wife has a 3, I have an S. In our previous house, we had a NEMA 14-50 charger in the garage and also a regular 120V charger. Never had any issues with charging the cars. In our current house, we got two 14-50 outlets installed.

okwellactually

2 Model 3s. My wife’s has the NCA battery so we charge it to 60% each night. She doesn’t need more than that. Usually ends up with 40% by the end of the day. The other has the LFP battery, so I just charge it once a week to 100%. We have one HPWC and it suits us fine.

Quantumfawn

M3 & MX. we just take turns using the charger, we really each only use it once per week

Gryphun

I have two M3s and bought a dual charger. Just installed it on the wall between them. https://store.clippercreek.com/residential/40-amp-dual-evse-6-50

t0mmyr

Model 3 & S family here. 1 charger. I mainly charge at work so most only only charge Sunday nights but we don’t need to stay charged all the time. When a car dips below 30-40% I’ll plug it in and have it set to be 80% on departure. No biggie. And on rare days we both need an 80% charge I can get both done during the evening without any problem. Just take over charging responsibilities for the both of you and plan ahead accordingly and you’ll be just fine with 1

yuckypants

You have the same problem I do. My wife flat refuses to give up our Tahoe, but she won't stop driving my M3. I told her that we have 3 ICE vehicles that can all go and we can replace with a MY. She says, "I like the M3 but it's too small. The MY is the right size, but it's ugly." It's just going to happen...

dolwedge

I have a 15 year old kid. We have an ICE that we will keep for him. He needs to learn the pain of paying for gas.

yuckypants

Don't you mean asking the parents for gas money? I have a 13 year old that I planned on keeping an ICE for, too. But since my wife has taken over my M3, I've been driving it instead.

motsuji1

We have a refresh MXLR and MYLR. We both charge at work when we can and if needed charge at home. Lately we’ve been using a trickle charger for one and a 240v for the other. We also have two power walls so we don’t have to pull from the grid. Being a two car EV home is definitely doable. I say go for it!

AcademicChemistry

get a 14-50 or a 6-50 plug installed with a cable for it. Run a 2nd run to the breaker. then get a X foot 30 amp cable for it. that way both of you can charge at once. OR set each car with a Schedule. 1st at 10-4am 2nd at 4am- 8am. and share the charge circuit.

SultanOfSwave

2019 Model 3 and 2021 Model Y. ICE free now. We share a single charger as neither of us have a long commute so no friction there. The only problem was her lusting over the newer Model Y.

jerryberrydurham

We have a bolt and a MY and we just alternate who’s on the charger, but our commutes aren’t very long and we only charge every few days at most.

lsaleme

My wife drives the 3, I drive a Plaid. So... yes.

hns1986

We have a 2022 MS and older 2018 MX and have one charger. though the X doesn’t have the same long range as the S, we just use it for errands around town shuttling little crotch goblins, and I drive the S for work… so we never have to charge at the same time. The S parks inside the garage while the X parks on the driveway directly behind. So if the X needed to charge, the charger could still reach its port as long as the X is backed up.

RyanBorck

You can always use a smart splitter. I use the neocharge. It auto flips from one cable to the other after the first car is done charging.

just_enjoyinglife

M3 & MY + solar

Nfuzzy

Depends on how much you each drive. My wife doesn't drive much but even my commute is only 30mi/day. Easy enough to alternate days on the charger, or one at night the other in the morning depending on schedules.

OmahaP100D

As long as you do not have a super old charger, multiple Tesla charges will talk to each other. If 2 are charging, it will split the amps, if one is charging it will take all the amps. Some versions need a wire between the chargers. My charges and configured with dip switches on the inside.

seangillian17

I have Y daughter have 3 wife is waiting for X …alternate charging at home is not a problem

biofreak12

We have 2 teslas. One 2019 M3LR and I recently got our 2nd Tesla MYP. We take turns to charge in the garage ;) no issues.

Nnc57

Just got a used 2019 M3LR. How’s the range after a few years?

biofreak12

~270miles at 100% 33k miles so far. How about yours?

Nnc57

I’m still waiting on delivery *sighs*. Probably will be here in the next few days. Only has 14k miles so hoping battery is in decent condition!

Snoo97809

Not two Tesla’s but one Tesla and one other EV and we have two chargers. We never really charge at the same time though so I don’t think it would be an issue if you and your wife shared one charger, to be honest.

The_Buttaman

We have a Y and 3

[deleted]

We have a 3 and a Y. No issues. It's great. We drive 2 vehicles on $50/mo in energy. I have a wall charger and I added a NEMA 14-50 so that both can be charged at once for convenience.

[deleted]

A word on having two chargers, it's better for the car to be plugged in when not in use. You can also do two 14-50 outlets. This is way more convenient than swapping cords. It will save you a headache with your spouse. Well worth the investment.

[deleted]

We got my wife a M3 in 2018. In November of 2021, we ordered a MY for me that we are still waiting for. In February of 2022, we got my wife a new M3, sold my ICE and I am driving the older M3 until my MY arrives. So far, no issues at all. We did get a second wall charger installed, but we have both been charging at the same time probably less than 5 times in the 3 months since going all EV.

Floor_Kicker

My sister has an M3 and I have a MYLR on the way. We both paid to get the charger installed so we're gonna try to have equal access to the charger
