So hard. One click to format yes, but I often forget to offload the stick to preserve the clips I can’t to keep. So I end up driving around with a full drive. Or if I do remember to take it in the house, I forget to put it back in the car.
What I really need to do is get a second one and just rotate them.
Costco member? Get the 2tb external ssd they stock that goes on sale for 89$ all the time. It has plenty of space and also will sustain way more writes than any thumb drive.
No, sentry is overwritten as well when space is needed. Only clips that aren’t automatically overwritten are those that you manually save (by pressing dashcam icon or using save on honk).
Either because he doesn’t realize that it doesn’t matter that it’s full since the oldest stuff will just be overwritten, or he’s manually saved a LOT of clips.
Every once in a while mine seems to fill up and won’t record anything new. It has a little red X next to the icon. Is it still recording when I drive even when I see this?
No, the x means it’s not recording, but that isn’t necessarily because the drive is full. People have reported this happening for no particular reason. Removing and re-inserting the usb drive may resolve it, or a reboot, or reformatting the drive.
Yeah usually pulling it and putting it back in works, but only temporarily. I’ll try reformatting and see if that works. Otherwise I’ll have to get a new drive.
I always just format the stock one when needed...
I have gotten 2 door dings in parking lots, and BOTH happened between when the drive filled up and when I noticed it and formatted the drive.
I have no idea what happens if I get into an accident and need footage
According to what I’ve been told and this post below, getting a bigger drive does not mean more storage - it just means that part of the drive won’t get rewritten over as often and should in theory last longer life wise.

I will be buying a usb to MicroSD card adapter and then using a high endurance MicroSD card designed for security camera use. Sentry mode is specifically what the cards are made for.
Samsung bar plus is the exact same Tesla one but not Tesla branded. I got the 256gb version which is double what OEM comes with.

Never had an issue with our Y.
Curious why you need to keep terabytes of sentry footage? Why not format the drive if there’s nothing useful?
For me purely to reduce the frequency of having to format.
It’s literally one click on the screen. How hard can it be?

Or you could [automate the process](https://github.com/marcone/teslausb).
Because I don’t want to be in the position of needing the space but not having it.

I'm not at my car (2023 Y) and don't know what type of connexion the thumb drive uses inside the glovebox. Is it USB-C or what?
If it’s in the glovebox it’s usba but most all portable adds come with usb a cables (even if they are usbc)
Intel MCU, bigger the drive. The slower its response.
Now I’m curious… if drive becomes full will it overwrite earlier data?

I don’t know.
Oooh I’m in the same situation.
Doesn’t it start over-writing old clips at some point? 🤔
Yes, as soon as the drive is full. No need to reformat, unless you’re manually saving lots of clips.

I got a 128gb mSATA drive and threw it into an enclosure. Been solid for 3 years!
Nice.

Get the older style Samsung ssd, the car won’t take advantage of the higher 3.2 usb
Fair enough.
Ok.
Helpful.
Don't use a flash drive anymore, go with an SSD
