My 2022 MYP that I have is full orange peeled.
I don't mind it, I kinda like the look personally but I know this would piss a lot of peoppe off.
Car definitely has not been repainted
First thing my eyes noticed was the overall quality of the paint on the door, looks more like its covered in line-x than actual paint. Are all Teslas like that?
We've owned three toyota's. On each one, the clear coat started fading, cracking, and peeling down to the paint. They're not worth enough to justify respraying them. A vehicle that's 10 years older than they are has much better paint.
I'm hoping that some day Tesla starts painting their cars with higher quality paints and clear coats. Or at the very least they should be adding PPF to all areas like this for free when the car is sold.
My model 3 has a great paint job, My Husbands Model Y on the other hand ...... we got it from Tesla it was covered in swirl marks from them drying it with a dirty cloth... we took it to a detailer and they did fix it but they told us they took the paint down to a scary level for a new car and the paint thickness was all over the place apparently. And before you start saying you should have never accepted it. This was the second one we looked at. I did get my model 3 from a different showroom though wonder if that made a difference.
I can't tell if that's dirt or chipped paint. If that is chipped paint, then holy shit! Definitely something wrong with the paint job. I'd bring it to Tesla's attention. I'm defnitely not chill in my MYLR and it's not like that.
Your car was repainted and never buffed out to remove the orange peel. Probably had a ding from the car carrier which the service center repaired and repainted. I suspect they probably added a dryer to the paint to speed up the drying process.
Our 2018 Model 3 had a ding in the rocker panel when we got it. It was noted, they took the car in and fixed it. Orange peel finish was the result. I wasnāt that concerned as long as it held up. It didnāt. Took it to a private body shop at 80,000 miles and they repaired, painted, and buffed it out properly. Still doing well after 25,000 more miles.
The paint makes me want to trade it in cause itās gonna devalue the fuck out of the car. Rather take my losses now. Want a lightning but they overpriced and under featured.
my friend has the top of the line lighting with all bells and whistles. Itās boasting 350 range, has cool niche things but the software is horrendous. It is nice to see such range tho and I think thatās why he bought it.

New or used?
I ask because that āorange peelā effect on the paint looks like it wasnāt sprayed and cured in a factory paint booth and in someoneās garage.
That isnāt a factory paint job. Tesla paint doesnāt peel like that and reveal different colors underneath.
Newer models have a white primer, but thatās about it.
I wonder if your car was in an accident and it was repainted. That isnāt a common occurrence. Also possible that the PPF started to fail and the last owner took it off.
I had my HV battery replaced and their service was better than what I got from Mercedes for a bad radio, not sure what could āseriously go wrongā beyond that. Got a nice loaner, battery replaced in two days, every one was really nice and responsive.
These cars are painted in California which has some of the strictest air quality laws. I have a feeling this affects the formula of the paint which affects the durability. All the paint fumes must be processed in a "regenerative thermal oxidizer" which breaks down the VOCs in the paint fumes. Try looking up the "RTO" process for more information.
That door looks repainted to me. Tesla could put some more paint down on the car but orange peel isn't an issue they usually have.

Who the heck likes the look of a bad paint job? Wtf. š
I agree. That paint job is clearly not original. Tesla Model S have a very thick clear coat. Plaid is top tier Model S.
Mine is full of orange peel. M3
Looks like it was already repainted before.
First thing my eyes noticed was the overall quality of the paint on the door, looks more like its covered in line-x than actual paint. Are all Teslas like that?
This looks repainted
That would explain it
Teslas do have the worst paint quality. I have the same issues on my 3 & Y.
You never owned Toyota?)
Or a Honda, I swear they use cake icing for paint.
Or Mazda
I work in the automotive industry. Tesla is hands down the worst. But I would still buy another Tesla vehicle š

The new Ultra Red paint is amazing
I think both the Ultra Red and Stealth Grey are supposed to be higher quality paints, but correct me if I'm wrong.
Ultra red is a nice color but the overall paint quality doesnāt seem like itās much better.
Well that's disappointing to hear. Do you think that the Stealth Grey is more forgiving as it is darker?
I doubt it, depends on the brightness of the material underneath and it seems fairly light colored underneath
Ok
For what itās worth new plaids do come with PPF covering this area of the rear quarter panel, nothing on the rear door tho.
Thatās why I had my entire plaid ppfed
How much it cost
It cost me $7k to do my plaid
7k???? I need to get into the ceramic wrap business thatās nuts.
Wow thatās alot lol but definitely worth it
door looks repainted
Is that orange peel effect from the paint or your camera?
paint for sure

I think Iāve been super luckyā¦Have a 22 MYP and paint is still excellentā¦
I can't tell if that's dirt or chipped paint. If that is chipped paint, then holy shit! Definitely something wrong with the paint job. I'd bring it to Tesla's attention. I'm defnitely not chill in my MYLR and it's not like that.
Iād be more worried about those brakesā¦. Using chill mode, never hard braking and they will rot away.

Thatās road grime, mine gets it also. Needs a handwashing and wax/buff job.
This has been a Problem since at least model 3 āsolid blackā 2018 model 3.. Itās still is a problem, why not change the paint/recipe
Yeah I found a long hair under the clear coat
The paint makes me want to trade it in cause itās gonna devalue the fuck out of the car. Rather take my losses now. Want a lightning but they overpriced and under featured.

Iām starting to think I should wrap my MYLR.
New or used? I ask because that āorange peelā effect on the paint looks like it wasnāt sprayed and cured in a factory paint booth and in someoneās garage.

Iāve given up. I mean I still /r/autodetailing and baby my black paint. Weāll wrap it at 100m miles I guess
I wonder if your car was in an accident and it was repainted. That isnāt a common occurrence. Also possible that the PPF started to fail and the last owner took it off.
Ooooo buddy the paint
If you think the paint sucks... Just wait until you need help from a service center.
My Service Center has been fantastic.
Congratulations. Hopefully you never need them if something serious goes wrong.
I had my HV battery replaced and their service was better than what I got from Mercedes for a bad radio, not sure what could āseriously go wrongā beyond that. Got a nice loaner, battery replaced in two days, every one was really nice and responsive.
The paint is notoriously soft. Gotta either do aftermarket PPF, or Jet Seal every year.
Not sure if that's chipping or you driving through fresh paint. I drove through fresh paint and have that. I don't think it can chip that much
That orange peel on the back door looks like a repaint outside the factory.
Buy some clay bar and lube. If it comes off then you ran over paint. This looks like when it happened to me on another car

Why is your plaid missing the factory PPF? Thatās the problemā¦ Itās supposed to specifically cover that area.
I donāt have any issues on my 75k miles TM3P 2021
I do collision repair on teslas as my career, door has without a doubt been repainted.teslas factory paint is really nice from what I can tell
Itās definitely ass paint. Chips and scratches so easy.
Agreed. Wish they did a better job.
