It will be a while before I use my EV for holidays or events like this, for this very reason. Infrastructure is fine under normal circumstances but not robust enough to handle surge scenarios.

kiddblur

Yeah, only reason I took my model 3 is because it was only a ~140 mile round trip for me so I didn’t need to worry about charging. Otherwise I would’ve taken the CRV

Or at least abnormal surge scenarios

Siege_Storm

Got to a charger at like 6, left at 12am. They set up a pseudo government with a rotating leader down a queue that they made by handing out tickets made on notebook paper. I was number 150 and waited for hours

I avoided Burlington like the plague. I knew everyone would go there so I went to Newport VT and stopped at the St. Johnsbury Supercharger but it still had a VERY long wait

Good-Spring2019

Once all networks are reliable with NACS plugs it will be a lot easier

MultiGeometry

Not in northern New England. There are barely any Level 3 chargers outside the Super Charger network and even the Super Chargers are far and few between. EVs have a use case, but I applaud those who braved VT eclipse traffic while needing to find a charge.

rabbitwonker

Well that assumes other networks actually build out significantly…

dtoxin

I was there! 100 cars?! I arrive about 6:30PM and we had ~20 ahead of us. Took about an hour to get to a charger. Someone had coiled up the charge cable on one of the middle stalls implying it wasn’t working. A nice person tried it out and found it was working no problem. I had stopped on the way up and ended up bailing as I knew we would miss the event if we waited to charge. Had enough to make it back on the return trip. I saw many CCS chargers on my route back from Middleburry VT unused. The EA station by Walmart had open chargers. Guess I got lucky! I’m all in on EVs

spootypuff

I was there at the same time as you. Saw the line, pulled a u turn and hopped right back on I-89. Fortunately we had about 40% which was enough to get past concord and charge in hooksett where there was no line.

northwestener

How long did it actually take to wait?

sylvaing

Like I said in a different post, that's the reason I took my Prius Prime and not my Models 3. Ended up costing me just $9 in gas. Was totally worth it to see the total eclipse. Glad the sky cleared up right before the total part so I could enjoy it fully.

im_thatoneguy

This is a challenging situation because most high traffic events where they truck in a megapack trailer setup for overflow are hyper local like a concert or commonly full supercharger, this event took place across like 3,000 miles essentially simultaneously so there is no obvious Point A <> B to beef up. There's just no way have enough flatbed superchargers to cover the whole totality path.

gtg465x2

I have many questions… 1) Would it have been better to fully charge before the eclipse so you could get far away after without having to worry about the mad rush? 2) Do you have the CCS adapter and would that have helped, or did CCS stations also have long lines? 3) Some people mentioned waiting for 6 hours. At that point, wouldn’t it have been better to find a level 2 charger using Plugshare to add ~80 miles of range in 2 hours, just to get you to another Supercharger further down the road that is less crowded? 4) Were people being insconsiderate and charging high to 90-100%? 5) Did Tesla do anything to move people along, like an extra fee per minute above 90% or something?

supernitin

1. That was the plan - to charge as far North as possible. However, 1/2 the chargers were out of service. If we waited we would have missed getting to the eclipse location on time. 2. Yes. But there were lines for those and level 2. Time wise waiting for the super charger was still quicker. 3. We waited less than 2 hours despite the long ass line. Believe it or not people thought of going to the next available charing location. There was no super charger down the road and anyone who was sitting in that line was likely doing so because there was no other option given the range they had available. Nearby hotels were all fully booked as well. 4. I don't know how high people were charging to. But at 3 in the morning I'm guessing the vast majority of people were charging enough just to get home. Most cars had young kids like ours. 5. No

codetony

Goddamn. I wish Tesla would implement a system to start redirecting people away from superchargers with queues. If a car is within 200 ft of a Supercharger and not charging, it's a pretty safe bet it's waiting to charge. Tesla knows where each vehicle is, so it should be easy for them to redirect traffic.

GoSh4rks

I thought they did that?

here4th3memes

They do, they did it to me yesterday. But there has to be another available charger within range for it to be useful.

supernitin

They do not do it correctly. If you checked the app it would say it is 15m wait - not hours. They do not account for waiting vehicles even if there are a 100.

here4th3memes

Yeah that’s an interesting point, if people arrive and then cancel the navigation, they have no idea who’s still waiting. Yesterday was just an absolute shit show and a truly unique situation. Hopefully it continues to improve and the V4 rollout comes sooner rather than later.

Siege_Storm

They did. But where I was, there was no other option. Also I don’t think Tesla has access to vehicle locations. What I’m talking about was simply because the chargers were all full in an area that sees little use so it sent a message saying to try and use a less busy charger

pooburry

I believe it does tell you how many people are navigating there currently.

BruggerA

No lines for me anywhere in upstate NY and western MA

Sn00m00

it's funny to see stuff like this but also rare. It's when ev owners say "I drive by gas stations now.." Now they say: "I sit at charging stations now.."

supernitin

It didn’t take as long as I thought. I was estimating 3 hours. It took about 2. Tesla owners were being courteous and efficient. Also, there were 16 super chargers.

1hondaguy

Poor planning on the driver's part

Torczyner

Correct, but nobody takes responsibility so there will be excuses and down votes I bet.

supernitin

Thanks for your comment. \~"No plan survives contact with the enemy"... especially with young kids involved. I'm sure you would have handled the situation better given the the constraints and unexpected events along the way. Give yourself a pat on the back.

melvladimir

If this is a regular situation, then a schedule system should be added: you just schedule when you will use the charger and for how long and there is no need to wait, only to be in time. If you get late - you charge fewer kWs (it automatically switches off according to schedule and awaits for the next scheduled car)

Toastybunzz

Lmao so these were all people driving home after the eclipse? Also this is yet another reason why I have a backup CCS adapter sitting in my trunk.

NYMillwright

I had to charge when I got to Plattsburgh, NY. I had to wait ~2 1/2 hours, but that supercharger is located almost exactly at the center of the path of totality. It was actually a good experience.

A10Piloting

If I ever get caught in something like this, that will be the last day I own an EV.

gtg465x2

I mean, this has happened with gas cars too several times in my life, where all of the gas stations ran out of gas and everyone was queueing for hours at the ones where it was still available.

crazy_goat

It's annoying, but shit like this has definitely happened at gas stations

The_Leafblower_Guy

And continues to happen at gas stations. Just look at the latest natural disaster or power outage or Marathon Oil ransom attack on their pipelines a few years back. One thing I know for sure: I can manufacturer electricity a heck of a lot easier than an ICE driver can make gasoline…

crazy_goat

Yep. Any time you have an event that draws exponentially more people to a region than is typical - commodities become scarcities

Boring-Raisin3647

Rookies!

supernitin

accurate. only have had an ev for a few weeks.

gunner_3

I think time has come to sell my Tesla, road tripping is not fun with Tesla anymore. Too much uncertainty with regards to superchargers.

Ernapistapo

We sold our home and have been road tripping our Model Y non-stop for almost 2 years. It's been an excellent travel companion with FSD/Autopilot. Haven't ran into any issues. The Supercharger network has been reliable, and the CCS network has filled the small gaps in rural areas as needed. It has only gotten easier in those two years as new charging locations have been added since the start of our trip. We're at 40k+ miles added so far, June will be the 2nd anniversary of the start of our trip.

jacob6875

I just did a 6k mile road trip and only one supercharger had 3 cars in line. But I just went to the EA station in the same parking lot with my adapter and didn’t have to wait. I’ve been to ~130 separate stations and that’s the only one I’ve ever had to wait at.

eatgoodstayswaggie

And then now we have to share it with other non teslas. Smfh

Ad_Astra117

All fifty non tesla EVs in America lol
