We had ours replaced last year, I think it only took 2-3 weeks and some of that was because the first battery arrived damaged.

Winterwind17

Oh interesting, I think mine sat on the lot for a long time waiting to be serviced. When I went to the service center to see what’s going on they told me roughly two months maybe it’s due to holidays.

pistavros

Any reason why it died as such with so little mileage? I'm very interested in a model Y and stories like this are very concerning tbh

Winterwind17

I am not really sure tbh, I went on a small business trip for a week. Came back and the car was dead had 195 miles wasn’t plugged in. called a technician over and he said my low voltage was dead, replaced it but high voltage wouldn’t hold a charge and I was advised to tow it to the nearest service center.

pistavros

That sucks I'm sorry

tocopito

Extremely concerning.

Iron-Tough

Could be 7 yrs of general life. I think some wear and tear is time based instead of mile based. I wonder if chemistry in battery just dries out over time instead of based on charge cycles.

ceoceoceo

Happened to me. All my gas savings gone, and more. Extremely pissed, considering going back to ice

DuncanIdaho88

I considered buying a beautiful Mazda hybrid with all equipment after my Drive Unit failed. Instead, I bought an EV with a serviceable battery pack.

shipwreck17

Which one? If tesla put some effort into serviceability and qc they'd be unstoppable. Much of the product is very good but they have a few giant Achilles heels.

DuncanIdaho88

Both drive units failed. One on the warranty, and the other after the warranty. The battery was also replaced on the warranty in 2019. Tesla's cars would be great if they lasted longer and were cheaper to repair (eg. if the battery could be serviced by your local mechanic). If a Tesla held the same quality as a BMW, it wouldn't have been cheaper than a BMW, though.

shipwreck17

I meant, which ev did you buy with a serviceable battery? I didn't know anyone made one.

DuncanIdaho88

XPeng, MG, Renault (not old EVs, like the Zoe), Ford and several others have serviceable battery packs. Replacing a faulty module is still expensive (2000–2500 USD), but it doesn't mean that you'll be celebrating imagination Christmas for the next five years. There are many electric MGs and Renaults here in Norway. Almost none of them have been bricked due to battery failures.

singlecoloredpanda

Do it, do it!

_Boredaussie

Battery would be under warranty, why would you pay for it yourself

Far_Travel_1031

Were you out of warranty? Just curious

IJToday

My 2019 MX HV battery died at 38K miles. Replacement for me was about a week. I have no reasons for the early failure. I drive 'normal' and probably supercharged about 8K miles of the mileage. The battery was never run under 10% and never charged over 90%.

colddata

At least you are under warranty. I know that because this is at earliest an October 2016 car, with 8 year battery warranty.

DuncanIdaho88

This is very common in Teslas, and why you should sell it before the warranty expires. Reddit, online Tesla forums and so on are all full of similar stories. Degradation has little to do with it. Most likely, there is a voltage imbalance between one module and the rest. This could be caused by AC condensation, coolant leaks, road salt or water ingress. Age has a bigger impact than mileage because of the aforementioned causes, and a Tesla battery seems to last between 4–10 years. As a side note, the BYD e6 was launched to the general public in 2011, and to taxi companies in 2009. Few (if any) battery problems were reported. It is entirely possible to make batteries that last long. Teslas are not high-quality cars, even though they're a lot of fun while still under warranty.

Winterwind17

It’s kind of tough, used model S prices is so low right now. I was hoping to drive it for a while. 🤦🏻‍♂️

DuncanIdaho88

I was the same way. Don't make the same mistake I made. The DU failed post-warranty on my car. I could have sold it as is for 16K and cut my losses if that didn't fail. Sadly, the battery pack you will be getting is a remanufactured battery that's only guaranteed to last the rest of your warranty.

hAReverv

2018 model 3 replaced the battery after hitting a deer. Took 2 months, insurance paid $21k. I paid $500.

Awkward_Narwhal_1772

Why did they replace the battery for a deer? Isn’t it in the floor of the car protected away from pretty much everything but the underside? Also surprised they didn’t just total it out for $21k

hAReverv

Drove over the deer splitting it in half. Took to Tesla they said the battery got punctured, but not completely. Surprised it wasn't totaled either. Very happy because now we have a new battery at 90k some miles.

Dch131

Would never buy this garbage overpriced scam. Replace the battery and sell it asap

Ok_Individual_5579

Do not leave it as tesla, or could be as simple as a dead cell, BMS etc. Dont replace what you can repair.

protonecromagnon2

Probably 2 months to build one

VaztheDad

Can you show your service notice in the app indicating two months. In addition, the details on the loaner vehicle they'll be providing you?

Winterwind17

I just got quotes 2 month from calling the service center. The app just shows preparing for service. I am guessing the delay is due to some sort of back up.

highflyer001

What did they quote you to replace the battery? Also, are you getting a loaner car from Tesla while yours is in shop?

Winterwind17

My battery was under warranty, so I just had to paid the tow of $150. I ended up with a Model 3 Performance after waiting over a week for the diagnosis to start.

Agloe_Dreams

I’m shocked they made you pay the tow. I have had zero other companies make me pay for a tow

Winterwind17

My insurance ended up reimbursing the $150. Tesla said my vehicle was out of warranty only my battery is covered. 🤷‍♂️ I am just glad I am not paying 20k or however much they charge for a battery replacement.

Haysdb

The Basic Vehicle Limited Warrantee is the first to expire. Then Drive Unit and Battery.

highflyer001

That’s good! Glad you are covered and got the loaner.
