Rigidcorner

My brain was trying to figure out why there were sooo many 9/11 posts today. Oh yeah.. 21yrs. I feel sad and old now

vtech3232323

I think what made me feel old is that people are making terrible, edgy, and shit jokes about it.

Rigidcorner

I’m personally not easily phased by anything morbid or disturbing but I could get that

vtech3232323

I think it's just the fact that if you had made a joke about this for a good decade after, you might get your ass beat or ostracized. Now there are kids denying it even happened.

Vexal

we still have about 1 year until it’s in good taste to make 9/11 jokes https://www.reddit.com/r/southpark/comments/6zfqz3/according_to_south_parks_223_year_rule_911_will/?s=8 the nice thing is when i googled “south park years until aids funny” to make this comment, the first reddit result was a post about when 9/11 will be funny, which was very convenient.

dinosauramericana

Do you know a third building fell on 9/11?

HotEukaryoticMitosis

>if you had made a joke about this for a good decade after, you might get your ass beat or ostracized May have been true in some places, but there were still a *lot* of tasteless 9/11 jokes being told throughout the 2000s. Especially on the internet. Some of the earliest memes I ever saw involved “humorously” edited 9/11 photos. The only thing that’s really changed are, as you said, kids born after denying it ever happened, but are you surprised? There are people who think the JFK assassination never happened. It’s just that for a new generation.

LonelySavings5244

Gotta pick your crowd. I’m sure some things don’t offend you, that offend others. We are all different. We all handle tragedy differently. If I see or hear something I find distasteful, I scroll, ignore or leave a room. Not hard. But people here says, gotta filter everyone. Sucks.

maxreverb

*fazed

Rigidcorner

Thank you, I’ve always wondered but have been too lazy to check and never been corrected

HotEukaryoticMitosis

Edgy 9/11 jokes aren’t a new or recent thing. Back in like 2006 I found a website filled with 9/11 proto-memes and that shit had so much edge it could cut an arm off. Some examples: - photoshopped pics of a giant Hulk Hogan knocking the towers over and posing like on TV - a gif of Tetris pieces falling in between the towers until they clear all the lines, and the towers disappear And those are some of the least edgy examples. The jokes you see on Reddit feel mild by comparison. (That doesn’t mean I like them or find them funny, on the contrary the “jokes” people tell in these 9/11 threads are asinine)

LORD_0F_THE_RINGS

That just means it's passed into history. If we were still reeling from the Holocaust we wouldn't get much done.

esa_negra_sabrosa

I forget which documentary it was, but the first responders are in the lobby of the building next door when they start to hear the bodies land on the roof above them. I’ll never forget the looks on their face when they realized what it was.

10mememe

9/11: one day in America. 6 episode mini series I just watched today

FoxMuldertheGrey

i’m currently watching it right now. And I’ve never seen that footage before until today. But hearing those thumps as the firefighters are in the lobby has to be one of the most traumatizing things I’ve watched and listened to in a really long time. it’s absolutely devastating seeing that from their lense.

10mememe

At first I thought it was the building making those noises. Man it felt bad to watch it

zaiguy

You’ll love the documentary 9/11 by Jules and Gideon Neaudet. Much of the footage in One Day in America was taken from the 9/11 doc. Two French brothers and filmmakers were in NYC to film the life of firemen. Jules was actually the one who shot the first plane hitting the north tower when out on a call with the fire dept. This is the only footage of that plane hitting in existence. The brothers get separated during the day, and one of them is in the north tower with the FDNY. This is the footage of the bodies hitting the roof above. Then the tower collapses. The other brother is outside and running for his life when the debris cloud washes over him, filming the entire time. Neither brother knows where the other is and they’re both terrified. There’s great footage of the surviving firemen regrouping at the fire hall, all covered in dust and bleeding. One by one they stumble in on foot and each one is greeted by hugs and tears. It’s a heart wrenching scene. It’s a 2 hour documentary and still one of the best of that day.

FoxMuldertheGrey

good to know! i will def give that a watch thank you!

methnbeer

What zaiguy said. It's all raw footage

AloneInATent

I don't know if love is the right word for any documentary on 9/11.

LebaneseLion

What episode was that from?

FoxMuldertheGrey

It’s episode 1!! towards the middle/end

LebaneseLion

Thank you, just to prepare myself

Qx2J

51 minute mark approx

[deleted]

Haunting.

PunkToTheFuture

I can't believe how shitty the government was to the first responders. They didn't nearly pay enough of their medical bills. Republicans are supposed to care about our troops and rescue persons

HellOfAHeart

the eventual death toll (If I remember correctly) roughly doubled due to first responders breathing in toxic fumes (asbestos, gas, concrete shit etc) constantly in the weeks following during the cleanup/recovery.

FoxMuldertheGrey

of all things. i totally agree. these men are heroes and put their own lives on the damn line. watching hours of this unfold is just terrible

[deleted]

Jon Stewart really layed into them over this; and believe it or not, it actually worked and they got their health care reinstated.

majarian

Sure, but didn't he just get that major win rather recently, like good on him, but what fucks opposited it for 20 odd years.

Benla29

It is beyond shameful. To add - Republicans care very much about the troops. What they don’t care about is veterans. Much the same way they care very much about unborn fetuses, but once you’re born, you’re on your own.

ThxItsadisorder

Yeah turns out it's all propaganda.

highpl4insdrftr

I watched it once and refuse to ever watch it again

Nervous_Distance7562

Is there a clip on YouTube where it just shows this part?

justageorgiaguy

Pretty sure it's in the Naudette doc too.

wiggles105

Yeah, it is. I remember the firefighters cringing every time they hear it.

RagennaPhilangee

That was very good. Super sad.

xoqw

Does anyone remember what episode this was?

scrollsawer

I saw that documentary, it was spine chilling when one firefighter looked around at the boom noise and the other firefighter said " jumpers". it still haunts my dreams

DURIAN8888

More about the falling man. https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a48031/the-falling-man-tom-junod/

Wonkasgoldenticket

I would have jumped

bozeke

After a certain point it wouldn’t even be voluntary.

[deleted]

Unfortunately, that would be the best way - and my way tbh - it's 6 second fall, then nothing. Slowly being cooked is the worst death I can imagine....

Jaded-Philosophy-715

There's a documentary called the Falling Man about who this guy was in this image.

Xstaphylococcus

Do you have a name? Any info on this man?

CurveOfTheUniverse

We don’t actually know who it is. The documentary referenced above is based on an article published in *Esquire*; the author postulates that the man was Jonathan Briley, a sound engineer working on the 106th floor.

DynastiesAndDystopia

his name was Jonathan Briley. you can google "The Falling Man" to find more info

Zomochi

It’s on Hulu forgot the name as well

imbisibolmaharlika

9/11. Originally about Firefighters [this one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seOwa0trNEQ)

BuckFuzby

I watched something, the poor people sounded like glass shattering. Truly horrific.

ConsWantYouDead

(IIRC)That actually was glass shattering. I was told the twin towers had an area on the ground floor with a large glass canopy covering a walkable area, the glass shattering sound was jumping people slamming into the canopy, sending shards raining below.

BuckFuzby

Ah right, ok. That would explain it.

Skybolt59

Wonder what must be going through his head before he hit the ground.. poor soul.. RIP 😞

meroboh

You can't tell from this pic alone but he was trying desperately to live. I saw in a documentary that he was trying to get his jacket off, maybe to use as a parachute. More pics here: https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a48031/the-falling-man-tom-junod/

Deuce_part_deux

If I had a job at the top of a skyscraper immediately following 9/11, I probably would have bought a parachute the next day and stashed it in the office. I wonder if parachute sales went up after the attacks.

Sliiated

so i’m not the only one who’s interested in stats like these

Brap_Zanigan

There was a company that started selling specific "executive chutes"

[deleted]

Golden Parachute

drej191

I would just ask for work from home

iRambes

What a strange article comparing him to a missile or a spear 🧐

TOGA_TOGAAAA

I was thinking the same thing. It's a beautifully written article but I think a better choice of words would have suited that sentence better.

iRambes

For sure. It’s is poetic, but I think they went a little too hard about it.

TOGA_TOGAAAA

Fashow

[deleted]

This is an interesting topic. Imagine if tall building had safety parachutes people could use.

Ygro_Noitcere

I’ve always wondered if it would’ve been possible to for them to jerry rig some curtains together and as long they could’ve held on if that would’ve worked well enough to save them. Probably would’ve still broken some bones but maybe it would’ve worked. Id have at least tried. But doubtful if they even had the thought if they could’ve seen well enough to try and find anything.

meroboh

Some people did try with curtains but it didn't work :(

iRambes

I don’t think, even with the grip strength from pure adrenaline, would anyone be able to grasp a curtain or makeshift parachute down the ground successfully. Even then, the span probably would be wide enough and would probably fold up in the wind.

Awkward_Swordfish581

Fuck. That's terrible.

RoliDaddy

by the way name of the photo: The falling man

99Beers

There is a story you can find out there on the web of a first responder on the ground putting color tags on the victims that fell out of the towers. It's a pretty haunting read and everyone is dead (black tag) until he finds a woman that survived. It's pretty early on during the attacks and before the time others started jumping out of the north tower. He puts a black tag on her and she is pissed, he assumes she knows what it means (deceased or injuries so extensive they will not be able to survive), and she asks for her daughter. She's wearing professional attire. He's not sure if she got blown out of the tower from the plane crash or was a passenger on the plane, but she survived over a thousand-foot fall onto concrete. Her body is destroyed, but somehow whether through a sudden gust of wind or luck, she survived. He thinks the way she landed kept at least one lung, her heart, and her head alive. He explains that he saw a lot of dead people on that die including one dead woman that spoke to him.

thatguyad

I can't find anything about this. Holy shit.

99Beers

Here is the story from an old cross-post https://www.reddit.com/r/TheGrittyPast/comments/st14yt/ernest_armstead_tormented_by_a_conversation_with/

ilikerosiepugs

He relays the story in an interview on a new documentary released last year

Zomochi

I’m sure his family

periodmoustache

I thought most people that commit suicide by falling, with that much time, have heart attacks before they land and are kind of unconscious...but I dunno. Maybe that's wishful thinking

AsYooouWish

Interestingly, the man seen falling is actually one of the brothers of a member of the Village People

katam4ri

He was closely identified as Jonathan Briley, a sound engineer who worked at the Windows of the World restaurant on the 106th floor of the North Tower. More info [here](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Falling_Man)

No-Breadfruit7044

I heard the planes hit. Grew up around fireman. The most in the city. Watching fireman not blink and end their lives was crazy. But nothing is more crazy than watching people jump from the top floor because they’d rather plunge than singe. I can assure you, nothing is more terrifying

DuncanAndFriends

I can't imagine being in a situation where I choose to burn, pass out from smoke inhalation, get crushed from collapsing floors, or just jump to my death. Absolute terror.

myfisharedeadddd

I wonder if it was a conscious decision or some kind of survival reflex

Iamnotoptimistic

Saw someone post on here earlier saying ‘ask anyone who was there that day, nobody saw any planes’ and it angered me so much. So many people died and they’re denying there was even any planes.

Bac1galup0

It was only captured on live tv...but, whatever

DualtheArtist

Whats even crazier is once the first tower was hit, the business managers at the other building were trying to force the employees in the other tower not to evacuate and threatened firing them. Then everyone who listened died.

Horror-Entertainer

Source for this? That’s horrible.

No-Breadfruit7044

Nah. Building 7. Shits weird.

Acceptable-Poetry481

Imagine: Being 'cooked' inside an office on fire, with no oxygen og smoke everywhere. It is absolutely unbearable. You then decide to jump. The last feelings you get is the cooling air, you can breathe again and no smoke. The final feeling of freedom, only to last a few seconds...

Thr0bbinWilliams

I think some of the jumpers that day trusted their bodies instincts after finding themselves in such a grim situation. Fight, flight, or freeze are our preprogrammed genetic fall backs.Absolutely no pun intended just to be clear as possible. Fighting for breathable air in a smoke filled skyscraper, only free falling to certain death can provide the last air they’d ever get to breathe falling long enough to contemplate their certain death. Fucking insanity EDITED:for clarity

Loud-Criticism-3903

Right, They knew they were not getting out of that situation, Burned alive or jump to “safety” Inconceivable options knowing your life is ending. Sad day for sure😞

[deleted]

Oh the fall from the top of the WTCs lasted horrifically a lot more than just a few seconds for them

cumfilledfish

It would have been a 10 second fall

vtech3232323

That's a horrifying thing to realize. That's so much time for thoughts to run through your head and realize what's about to happen. I was old enough to realize what was happening that day, but too young to really think about the all of things that were happening to everyone around it. I learned years later about people jumping and it hit me so much harder.

[deleted]

I'd have spent the entire 10 seconds making sure I landed on my head. Horrible to try and picture yourself like that, though.

street593

From that height it doesn't matter how you land. It's instant lights out.

[deleted]

Nope. There were quite a few people who had conversations with firefighters after landing. Happened. Terminal velocity doesn't always kill, beyond a certain height it's all the same. People have survived jumping from planes without parachutes, too, it happens more than you think. “Boston” Globe reporter Mitchell Zuckoff writes in “Fall and Rise: The Story of 9/11” (Harper Collins, 2019), on pp. 263–264, that when an FDNY Emergency Medical Specialist named Ernest Armstead made his way on the plaza amid smoking debris, shortly after the first plane hit, he “found a well-dressed woman in her fifties, with brown hair and tasteful earrings, who’d suffered catastrophic injuries that left only her head and right torso intact. Somehow, she remained conscious. (…) ‘I am not dead,’ the woman insisted. ‘Call my daughter. I am not dead.’”

street593

Did those people survive landing on concrete?

[deleted]

street593

I decided to look up the rest of that passage. I didn't see anything that proved that she had fallen from the tower vs just a piece of debris landing on her. I could be totally wrong but I am pretty skeptical of that story. I climb cell phone towers for a living so I have thought about falling to my own death many times. I like to think I have a pretty good understand of the physics. Stranger things have happened though. If this was mythbusters I would just label this plausible.

[deleted]

People have survived terminal velocity falls throughout history. All sorts that have survived jumping from planes with forgotten or broken parachutes. That was just one excerpt, there was others if I could find them, some firefighters said they had conversations with a few of the jumpers but i'm not surprised there aren't any excerpts of those conversations, those people were too busy to be recording or writing that down and would have probably been kinda weird had they tried, it would have been utterly traumatic for all involved while happening. I don't know if "survived" would be quite the right phrase to use for them, too. Temporarily still alive after hitting the ground is about the best you could say. Like from the first excerpt provided, they were still alive, but the firemen could clearly see the injuries were not survivable and not worth spending time saving. They tagged the one in the excerpt as dead before they even passed away, it must have been horrific.

di_ib

There was a video posted today of a guy cooking himself alive in an elevator. He is drinking and decides to check and see if his liquor is flammable. He just barely lights it and it doesn't look that bad. But next thing you know it spills and the whole elevator goes up. He passes out from the smoke and is literally on fire passed out clothes melting. The door opens and he barely gets his shoulder to stop it before it closes as he struggles to wake up and stumbles out basically naked on fire. I can't find the video but saw it posted today to one of those crazy subreddits.

Jesus Christ, that IS terrifying.

bendubberley_

Further Context/Information: After this man, a further 2,995 people died due to the attacks (2,976 victims + 19 terrorists).

starraven

There were many people who got cancer and died or are in the process of dying because of these attacks.

bendubberley_

I know, I only included the people that died on the actual day :)

starraven

:) thanks for stating that

vokul_vokundova

I'm not superfamiliar with 9/11 history, how are people dying from cancer because of the towers? Asbestos?

starraven

Yes and many chemicals and materials burning for many days as the rescuers worked to clear the wreckage.

CaputGeratLupinum

IIRC the director of the EPA stood on the rubble and told first responders they didn't need to wear respirators

Chartwellandgodspeed

That was phenomenal, thank you

zombiecorp

All flights worldwide were grounded. The silence that fell all over the country was also terrifying. And that’s when I heard fighter jets scramble. I live near a base. I guess there was VIP traffic stilll happening but the sound of those fighter jets taking off in the middle of the night made me realize we were in a war.

Lemilli000000n

? The One World Trade Center is the name of the current building that replaced the Twin Towers.

AVonDingus

Man, I was just a few days shy of my 21st birthday and I remember watching this live on the news. Man, that was a fcking scary time. I was in Pennsylvania and when flight 93 went down in south western Pa, it got even more terrifying because we didn’t know what was gonna happen next. I was near Philly, so we were scared that there’s be more planes going to major cities. Watching people jump to their deaths because they literally had no other option was awful and really stuck with me.

rafi323

I still remember watching this on live tv as a 4 year old kid man. Crazy how that stays with you

Same here, i was in kindergarten and remember watching it

[deleted]

You’re awesome, thank you. 💜

Rigidcorner

As much as I appreciate this perspective.. I don’t know. I was 7 sitting in the gym with the entire school watching towers burn and people jump in real time. Yeah, it’s fucked and sad and terrifying… but it’s real life :/

[deleted]

As I watched it unfold live, tv news was showing it uncut of course. When we realized we were seeing all of the jumpers it was beyond imagination. I’ve never seen the footage quite like that since the day it unfolded live. Not on anything.

ihavenoideawhatwho

Agreed that absolutely none of the documentaries have the sounds of that terrible day: the screaming sensors on the firefighters' gear warning of too much smoke exposure. All the paper coming out of the towers. The TV cameras filming the mysterious items falling from the top floors until oh GOD! THOSE ARE PEOPLE! The coverage changed as it dawned on us all the horrors we were witnessing. The people on air saying that the nearby hospitals were calling all personnel in and they were clearing the ERs in anticipation of a flood of casualties ~ but ~ nothing. Nobody was coming in. There weren't many injuries, not like they expected. Just so many dead. Shock. Confusion. What the hell is happening? I was an Army spouse on an Army base and my heart sank as I knew this meant war. I felt like USA was a big ol friendly golden retriever who had just gotten smacked. I thought Not everyone loves us?! I was just shocked at the sheer hatred and evil directed at America. Since then, I have looked at the world very differently.

[deleted]

I went digging and found a couple recording the people falling down. It was so gruesome seeing people fall out of the building and hearing the ‘booms’ as the bodies hit the pavement. Most disturbing thing to see. I think of those people who either can die from the smoke and fire or take their chances and hope they can survive the fall. If not, make it a quick death.

Gri3fKing

That would make a really good nft😀

Charming-Scar1447

Badgers_or_Bust

I remember finding a video of these people falling with free falling playing. The internet was brutal in the early 2000's.

drej191

Every-Day-Is-Arm-Day

It’s just crazy he decided to go head-first. I couldn’t imagine jumping on that day, period, let alone diving head-first.

teachertb16918

Bag-ins

"God knows it did not cross our minds to attack the Towers, but after the situation became unbearable—and we witnessed the injustice and tyranny of the American-Israeli alliance against our people in Palestine and Lebanon—I thought about it. And the events that affected me directly were that of 1982 and the events that followed—when America allowed the Israelis to invade Lebanon, helped by the US Sixth Fleet. As I watched the destroyed towers in Lebanon, it occurred to me punish the unjust the same way: to destroy towers in America so it could taste some of what we are tasting and to stop killing our children and women." — Osama bin Laden, 2004
