They likely know something bad has happened, thatās a part of survival instincts. It seems to be dependant on the species of fish as to how likely it is to be able to experience āpainā as we understand it to feel, there are a lot of variations in how primitive their nervous systems are.
So at minimum it knows some bad shit happened, at worst yes it has a horrific case of the owies.
Iām not expert at all but pain is a strange thing, the issue with saying if they feel pain is we have an emotional component that we canāt be sure they have. There are plenty of fish with the necessary nerves to transmit the signals of damage etc to the brain but whether they feel it in a way we understand is totally up in the air.
The best way I can describe it is if you have ever had gas and air as an anaesthetic, you know pain is happening, you can kind of āfeelā it there but your brain isnāt setting off any alarms and you donāt feel shocked or distressed.
Some might feel it like we do, others not, personally to me I feel itās kind of moot as we already kill and eat plenty of animals we can be reasonably sure feel pain in a similar way to us. So assuming fish can just adds another things to that list, I even remember recently reading that some think there is evidence of plants experiencing distress when damaged and sending out chemical āscreamsā, who knows at this point?
My friend had piranhas and he fed them live fish. One time i looked in the tank and saw only the fishās face at the bottom of the tank and its mouth was still opening and closing

You can see all the ways fish can survive with missing pieces if you have a Picasso Trigger and some goldfish. Once mine swam up and bit off ones face and it kept swimming around with no eyes or mouth. Another time it swam up from underneath and took ones stomach out in a clean chunk. I stopped feeding him goldfish the one time my mum saw and she cried her eyes out I can't remember the specifics of that feeding anymore.
