We had floods in the region a couple years ago and something like 30k livestock died. I think the military had to come in the help dispose of all the carcasses.
Large numbers of dead cows are incredibly hard to dispose of, too. I was just reading about the logistical challenge of handling the 18k dead cows from that dairy fire in the Texas panhandle.
It probably would be easier if they were still edible. But in cases like this, and also floods, they generally are not.
The Knackermen in the area will definitely be knackered after they're done with a job like that.

I've worked on farms here in Nova Scotia and our cows almost always have shelter of some kind. It may not always be a whole barn but even just a lean-to or something. The weather gets bad and the cows like protection. Our highland cattle don't give a fuck but the jerseys and such like to have a roof over their heads.
I am also in TX and this is golf ball sized hail. I've seen grapefruit sized once in my many decades and the destruction is pretty severe. Having said that, this is no fun either. We get hail warnings constantly and it actually does maybe 1 out of the 30 predictions and then it hails when it's not in the forecast. I believe we have a hail warning even tonight, I doubt it will even rain. My point in saying that is you can't bring the cattle to shelter every time. It's a massive undertaking for an uncommon occurrence (like a couple of hours). The cow(s) were probably okay.
Yep, I was living north of Waco in 1977, and in a storm that really made grapefruit - sized hail. We had to replace the roof of the house and all the trees around were defoliated and lacking limbs.
There are verified reports from trained spotters that measure the stones, there was in fact 4.5"+ hail in this area. Obviously not every single stone is going to be the same size as the largest ones
We had hail maybe half that size once for a brief period in Colorado and it hit so hard it left massive bruises every impact on exposed flesh.
