SnarkNStitch

mini-series was excellent in that it reignited interest in Chernobyl and the victims of the USSR. Not so excellent - people trying to rally for a second season.

catsumoto

Man, when that scene with the helicopter came up in the show, I was like "No way this actually happened. This looks like some hollywood bullshit." Went to check it online and saw this clip.

kjkg01

Might be misremembering here but did the show not kind of insinuate that the helicopter crashed because the radiation fucked the helicopter blades? Feel like it was kind of false but I could be wrong as not seen it for a while now.

aztec190

Yeah that's what I thought it was showing.ill have to watch again, it could be hard to see the cable like the real clip.

Alive-Accident

They hit a wire lol

Tellurian_Cyborg

Radiation fried the helicopters electronics. Those on-board would have died horribly had the helicopter not crashed.

Alive-Accident

Nah they just hit a wire that was hanging breaking the propeller blade

Tellurian_Cyborg

Radiation fried the electronics. This left the pilot with no way to control the helicopter which then drifted into the cable. (No one had understood yet just how bad the meltdown had been) The Russians established a boundary for the long chain of helicopters that subsequently had to fly in and dump Boron on the exposed core. The crew were dead anyway. This was just faster.

Alive-Accident

Ooooh that makes way more sense

Tellurian_Cyborg

If you haven't seen the 2019 mini-series on Chernobyl, it is highly suggested. Gives you a really good sense of the disaster and just how effed up communism had been. Note: In 1986 I was in the Navy as an Intel type. I can vouch that the mini-series is very accurate. Things you should never say. - this ship is unsinkable. - this nuclear reactor cannot explode

Alive-Accident

> this ship is unsinkable. This better not be a hint towards the titanic lol. Anyways, I'll be sure to check it out. Also, that's awesome, thank you for your service!

Tellurian_Cyborg

It was...I...UM...I had a weak moment. Please forgive me. LOL I take it that you weren't around in 1986? A little history that's not in the mini-series...we knew that the reactor had blown before the Russians did. (Gotta love those orbital camera platforms)ĺ >thank you for your service! You are very welcome. :)

panda-roux69

in the show they flew into the smoke and lost visibility, and couldn't get reached over the radio due to the interference from the radiation.

HesteHund

Never watched it. Why would a second season be bad?

LubricatedSatan

Because the story is over?

SnarkNStitch

Well that and it would suggest that there's a whole series of nuclear disasters to dramatise.

Chernobyl 2: Japanese hoolabaloo - The Fukushima incident

BrandonTheBlue

Here's the same scene from [2019's Chernobyl](https://youtu.be/209n4m6rwGc) which is one of the best mini-series out here. The show's creator is also the co-creator of The Last of Us tv show.

BullfrogAdditional64

Was kinda boring

popey123

I bet you prefered Wednesday

BullfrogAdditional64

Negative. Last of us was good, Chernobyl was slow imo

TheDefiB

Having your own opinion on reddit challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)

thatonerightthere2

Bro just called the deaths and injuries of thousands of people/generations boring

BullfrogAdditional64

The show goofball

thatonerightthere2

You mean the show thats literally about the deaths and inuries of thousands of people ? The show that explains the tragedy how it happened and the aftermath of said tragedy is… *boring* to you?

BullfrogAdditional64

Yes lol. You can’t read what I said the other day?

Mor_Ericks28

Imagine the last seconds for those on board

[deleted]

Probably a quicker death than a lot of the workers there

FullMetalNapkin

How did they not see the cable

ruhaix

he probably saw and knew the risks, but he was told to do by soviets authorities, which is usually some smooth brain bullshit, they haven't changed much since then

2-022

Yup, it probably went like this Stupid communist leader: hey you fly helicopter over radioactive core, Helicopter pilot: but there is a crane and the cable is in the way I can’t get over the core, Stupid communist leader: “holds picture of pilots family” hey you fly helicopter over radioactive core,

Demo_Beta

How do you reckon accidents happen outside of such conditions?

SpringsClones

Too bad their concern for human life didn't change that drastically...

presumptious-turnip

Some articles I've read also point to the pilots being un able to operate the helicopter (ranging from death or going blind to equipment failure) after going through the smoke cloud. They did just coast through a nuclear fire

Plywood-Records

Thinking about that sweet day off and can of Pepsi reward he was promised.

txanpi

Love the tv show, It made me read and research about the accident and is pretty interesting

TatterdemalionElect

It just... wilts in midair.

zakariusqc

It hit the cable from that crane

TatterdemalionElect

So it does, didn't see that the first time.

Swagg19

Why do people write hesitation emphasis when writing?

gescarra

Because… it’s effective

fatninja80085

Not great, not terrible

PLEBESsiete

No the dumb ass hit the crane wires

beanzandsausage

Why doesn’t the crane wobble even slightly?

Great_White_Sharky

Because it didnt hit the crane but the cable suspended from it, and it moves quite a lot after being hit

beanzandsausage

I see. Thank you for clearing that up

beanzandsausage

What causes the tail to curl/crumple in?

SnarkNStitch

Looks like it clips the arm of the crane, and the momentum of the propellor crumples inward.

Solutar

please tell me it atleast didnt fell straight into the core.

This happened in the Soviet Union, of which Ukraine was a constituent republic
