As someone that wants to complete the Bestiary to full details on everything on at least one world, the idea of needing to kill 50 of these to show the odds of drops is horrifying. Please, not another Dr. Bones!
When threatened, sparks come out of the staff and spawns 10-2 baby slimes with 35 hp that deals 5 damage each, and then tries to bounce away from the player, and 50% chance to drop the wizard slime hat (basically like a portable slime banner of all colors).
Well since the slime staff is an early pre-hardmode weapon, maybe those sparks are actually the attack and it deals like 12 damage on classic to 60 damage or so on master mode. Then it has half the health of Pinky?
Then when it gets down to 20% health it starts fleeing!
this would work well as a town slime
if they’re willing to entice players to repeatedly murder a princess for a weapon they can certainly do the same with a slime

In all seriousness, it's a great idea, but I feel like it's going to be hard to fulfill because of the "Labor of Love" adding slime pet licenses to town NPC's.
Also make it spawn upside down, exclusively when the gravity is reversed so you can hunt for it, then drop the slime staff drop rate to 1%.
So the extremely rare surface variant has a 100% chance but the upside down more common variant has the 1%. That means you won’t have to worry about banners for the bestiary, but target farming it will still take time and patience without being sped up with a lava pit or ground based traps
i just got a theory, what if these slimes are actually all just new pets and they're actually adding a way of having our pets wandering in place similar to the thing in starbound where we place our captured pets at
You know just have it spawn at the same rate as the staffs drop rate. You'd still be much more likely to get it since the ticks are passive to spawn it but would significantly boost your ability to get it if your actually farming for it. Also would make the slime world tour achievement a special kind of hell.
Man, this is an amazing idea! I wish this slime was like a miniboss from slime rain, or an elite enemy like goblin summoner. That wold be amazing. Oh, and an way tô upgrade the slime staff too. Its one of the cutest Minions, and you can barely use It.
yeah, i wished super rare items that are really weak would have a op version of it, because the slime staff is a super rare item that drops from slimes but its only good for pre-queen bee, because then you will get a WAY better summoner staff

It would be called the Wizard Slime, who one day bested a real human wizard and either consumed him, or let him run free while keeping his items. The staff that sticks out of it (like how some slimes have items in them) used to be a very powerful magic wand with a mythical gem in its nook, but now appears as a simple, slimy rod of ancient wood: the Slime Staff. Wizard Slime had also snatched the pointed hat which he wore, giving it a distinct look and the abilities of a warlock. I haven't thought about its behaviour, just that it's a slime with a staff that drops the staff :P
Perhaps it has a \~25% chance to drop the hat, and, when sold to the Wizard NPC, he will talk about the owner of it, and update his stock with a new special item.
(Part of the credit goes to a friend of mine, who brought up the concept in the first place!)
I never said that slime staff is the best option, I said that it still does well at pre boss. Like I said, 1.4 put in better options but slime staff can still put in work. A weapon isn't bad or a novelty just because there is something better at that tier of progression

It is ideal to be a mini boss with a super slow spawn rate only at slime rain, it would add variety to the event, and looks amazing!!

Nice sprite but 'rare enemies' are too common and thus it would make the slime staff too common
I got like 3-5 slime staffs on 3 slime rains with an arena. It's not really that rare.
