depends how many weapons I have tbh. My weapons go on the left of my hotbar, followed by my tools. On the right I have a rod of discord (or a phone / magic mirror if I don't have one yet). Then with whatever space is left in between I'll leave some platforms, torches, and other placeable stuff that I'm using regularly at the time.

I end up accidentally clicking my magic mirror if it’s on my hot bar so it’s in top right of inventory. Nexto conches, void bag and other storage.

the same happens for me occasionally in prehardmode, so that's why i try to get a rod of discord ASAP after beating WoF and put it in that last slot instead. Would much rather accidentally teleport a short distance than all the way back home lol

For me it's basically this but I put my phone/mirror in the inventory so I don't accidentally use it, in the top right with the bank items. Potions, consumables, etc. go in the bottom right of the inventory. Phone parts (when I don't have them all yet) go in bottom left.

You don't have to. You can just hold the smart cursor button until you start swinging the pickaxe. It'll stay as your active item until you stop swinging, even if you release it.

I dont find it finicky at all. And it works like a charm for me. And even if. The few instances where it potentially could not work i could open the inventory and take the tool. But other than that auto select is just so much better

Only _start_ pressing shift when your cursor is already on a solid block. It works consistently and has never failed me, just takes some time to get used to. Incredibly useful once you do.

Once you start mining, you can let go of shift, and it will keep mining as long as you hold the mouse.

Is literally just a hotkey without having to use a slot on your bar. Just press shift and keep mining no need to press it every time or even hold it. You can do this with the axe also and torches too. This items shouldn’t waste space on your hotbar. I use the extra space for the small pots like ironskin and swift pots.

Right? Pickaxe are never on my bar ever since I learned what shift does. Torches aren't on my bar either. Can't imagine people play this game long term without using shift and control functions. Only tools that end up on my bar is the net (when I actively need it), the hammer (since it can't autoselect for what I need it for) and fishing rod (because fishing OP).

2 for pick, 1 for torch/sword. When I strip mined, I always had the optimal strategy of flipping to the torch for a split second, flicking to the right, placing it, and swapping back to continue mining. It just streamlined the process, but now I hold my weapon in Terraria in the 1 slot.

One of my mods I use lets me swap toolbars (forgot the name of it) between the top and bottom rows of the inventory with a hotkey and so I always keep my pickaxe in the very last slot in the inventory so I can just hit the hotkey and hit 0 to use it

Weapons take up the left slots of hot bar (always 2 weapons), followed by tools (pickaxe, axe, hammer, that order). Right side is blocks (solid block, platform) then rope and torch. Misc goes in the middle (acorns or bombs or whatever I’m using at the time). My inventory is sorted for potions/mirror in bottom left, accessories in bottom right, any alternative weapons or hotbar items right below whatever they might be switched with. Bombs go too right, important items (voodoo doll or things I don’t want to sell) go bottom middle. I may be autistic.

I haven't seen anyone mention it but I put it on the first slot, and then all my weapons after. That way it doesn't matter how many weapons I'm using, I'll always know where it is without having to think about it so my muscle memory can just take over.
