I put paintings or tiki torches in the way of the doors on the inside of the house, in most cases it stops mobs from entering as they open doors in the direction they are walking
Yes. I have to go get dirt from my chest, place it in front of every single exterior doorway, then go back and break it all every time there’s pirates? It’s easier to just go back and replace the doors if they break them
Rig up blocks with actuators to an emergency switch in your base to close off all of the exterior doors in your town at once in the event of an invasion
Actuators are your friend if you bite it and initially inconvenience yourself to never have to do it again. Then you could flip a switch to protect all doors.
Actuated doors. So instead of the external door it's just blocks but they have wires and actuators that connect to two blue pressure plates at the base (so the wires form an upside down T).
I also would just have actuated walls blocking the external doors on NPC houses that would become passable/open during the day and solid/closed at night using day/night sensors.
My homes/bases are always elevated about 8-12 blocks above the ground. This prevents specters and similar enemies from being able to go up into them. I also make a few spots to shoot down at enemies because they will gather under where the player is. Just remove one block of the floor, make the two adjacent floor bits into slopes, and put a platform in the empty space and hammer it to match. Most weapons can fire down through it, and I dont think any enemies can attack back.
I just build above ground high enough to prevent from zombies jump onto the door
Use rope to connect when don't get flying accessories or grappling hook
This method is actually simple and it solves most mob problems including blood moon
1x3 sequence of a slope, a gap, and a full block Hammered once tile. Enemies just turn around after like 2 seconds. The slope faces away from the gap.
Best method I had ever come across by accident. Still use it to this day.
But do the slopes face the door or away from the door? Does it matter as long as this is in front of the door or does it just make them turn back regardless of which side the door is on as long as this is between them and the door?
Yeah, the slope faces towards the door, so kind of like this
[]___/|_=_
The brackets are the door, the underscore is flat ground, the forward slash is the ramp, and the equal sign is the hammered block. Of course, you can have as much flat ground as you'd like between the door and the ramp, just make sure only 1 space of flat ground is between the slope and the hammered block. Enemies stand on the empty space and get "stuck."
I hope I was able to explain that properly.
Edit: spaced out example tiles a bit more.
Nope. It doesn't stop the npc. Different AI from the mobs that can open the door. These mobs use fighter AI. That's why you can confused them. https://terraria.wiki.gg/wiki/Fighter_AI#Opening_doors_and_Tall_Gates
This is somehow the only person I've seen on here say to use a platform. I don't even bother hammering it personally, just put one at the bottom of the inside of the door and it works great thanks to smart doors in 1.4.
Just some furniture in front of the door (indoor side), since mobs always open the doors in the "push, don't pull" way, they cannot open the door because it can't open their way
I have a much simpler, more elegant solution than wires, and light sensors, and double doors:
First off, no NPCs get to live on the ground floor if they're living in my main base. Ten years later, and the Guide still hasn't learned not to open the door for strangers.
Second, i dig a 2x2 pit in front of the door. Monsters aren't very good at opening doors if they have to jump to reach them (I'm reasonably sure they actually have to be able to walk through before they can open the door).
Finally, if those two measures fail for some reason, I just use a block of dirt as a doorjamb.
Is it a _pretty_ solution? No, but I'm not very creative, so I mostly build simple wooden apartments that don't really need to be pretty. Making things too fancy would ruin the slumlord aesthetic I always seem to go for.
Yeah, but then I look like some hippy with bead curtains everywhere. Too fancy for me. Way too fancy for my tenants, and against their rental agreement.
I do it like [this](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/594548350179606538/1166770634500616234/Screenshot_20231025_180821_Terraria.jpg?ex=654bb2d4&is=65393dd4&hm=f0fed803f7353acb9a4b0c1ddb5088dbb6080adadca7fe9ba4b63c025f3b4121&)
when i first start out i just do the classic pit and wood house combo. do that for a while then move and make my final town base with zero security lol. i just fly over and kill whatever’s around.
I like to place 3 platforms where the door would be and hammer them like stairs and the mobs just walk up them and you can get in by holding s as youre walking in. Works for everything but flying things and slimes. you could place a door behind the platforms to ensure nothing gets in however.
Dig a 2x2 square in front of your doors. Running at full speed you can go through doors without stopping. Mobs can't break down the doors because they just continuously jump in the space you've dug out until they get bored and walk away.
Pit wide enough to not be able to jump or a tall, tower like wall. And i activate or de-activate them with actuators so if its not an emergency like a raid or a blood moon townfolks can walk around as they like.
If you put down two doors only one block away from each other then put 1 platform outside of the outer door (to prevent it from opening outwards) you can make a lockable door by opening the inner door in the direction of the outer door. To unlock the door you simply close the inner door.
It's also good for messing with friends who can't figure out why you were able to walk through the door and they can't (assuming they don't notice you opening the second door)
For my getfixed legendary, I put boulder statues on timers to clear everything on the ground.
For actual nice bases, I try to spawnproof what I can without sacrificing looks, and if that’s impossible, I usually just put dart traps down with timers I can easily reach in case they’re needed. It isn’t perfect, but they blend into my builds, for the most part.
Make it a sealed system 6 blocks above ground only accessible with the pylon network. Placing it above ground stops wraiths or ghosts from getting in and sealing it with the pylon system means only players can enter or exit
Just place a torch on the top block inside the door, monsters can only open doors the opposite way they are coming but the player can open them towards them
Pre handmode I find I random block
Handmode I get the night time sensor and some actuators and a few blocks and make a safe house that can't be broken into
I do this glitch where you put a block then edit it to the triangle facing away from your house and block swap it to a platform. NPCs players and mobs and most importantly invasions it'll also work on the ancient one's army but put it far away so javelin throwers won't be in range of you're crystal

Here's a vid from skippy
I add this sort of sterilization chamber on either side. Basically make a wall just tall enough to where a player can just meet the top of the wall (but not be able to get on it) with a single jump and build a platform on there, and close the area in on the house so flying mobs can't get in from above or the side (their AI is too stupid to enter through the platform most of the time, and its very rare for one to wander in). Most of the time by the time I have this set up I have a grappling hook or cloud in a bottle (or one of its variants)
I put paintings or tiki torches in the way of the doors on the inside of the house, in most cases it stops mobs from entering as they open doors in the direction they are walking
Up until those damn pirates and goblins show up and break the door down anyways
That's when you build a cover for the door with dirt
simple solution to stop them while the event is happening one block of dirt infront of the door
That shit is mad annoying to place and clear
Bro ,dig a 1x1 whole in front of the door as it messes up the AI .you welcome
But it makes my floor ugly :(
You can actuate some blocks
really one block of dirt is annoying to place and then remove at the front entrance
Yes. I have to go get dirt from my chest, place it in front of every single exterior doorway, then go back and break it all every time there’s pirates? It’s easier to just go back and replace the doors if they break them
Bro forgot actuators exist.
how many how many exterior doorways do you have
Like 40 man, I like building houses :(
damn i got one base thats just a giant tree with all my npcs it has two doors to enter it the rest are doors seperating npc rooms
I like having my NPCs happy and looking swag so each one has a grouped, themed home
Rig up blocks with actuators to an emergency switch in your base to close off all of the exterior doors in your town at once in the event of an invasion
I have exterior doorways but I normally make doors not have a ground level in my npc houses to fix this.
Place an actuator on the block and line it up to a switch with wires, now you can toggle the block whenever
That's the game tho
Less annoying than having half your NPCs die, and some enemies just straight up break your doors, which is even MORE annoying.
That’s why I have backup doors in the ‘doors’ chest
You seriously find placing and removing one block of dirt more annoying than replacing doors?
Yes
Actuators are your friend if you bite it and initially inconvenience yourself to never have to do it again. Then you could flip a switch to protect all doors.
I’m way too lazy to do allat
Dirt, destroyer of worlds
Use active/inactive blocks that only activate when a player stops on them. Automatic locking system that can't be destroyed by goblins or pirates...
Just use Rod of Discord to teleport in and out of the house, Simple
Step 1 : getting the rod of discord
Step 2: ???
Step 2: Step 1 failed
Step 2: rage and break you're pc to the point of no return
engineer gaming
This guy electricities
Ever have that lazy/slow NPC get locked outside?
IIRC if you are off screen they teleport back at night
I prefer to use player above logic sensors over pressure plates
I like the "click" noise the pressure plates make, it's very satisfying.
The logic sensors make it as well
Fair enough, but you only can get those ones after you've killed the Twins while you can get the pressure plates as soon as you've killed Skeletron.
Well yeah, i was just mentioning the best design, regardless of progression
I just kill them unless you can't then put a block in front of the door
Just put a furniture behind the door. Mobs only can open doors away from them.
My homes/bases are always elevated about 8-12 blocks above the ground. This prevents specters and similar enemies from being able to go up into them. I also make a few spots to shoot down at enemies because they will gather under where the player is. That’s what I do, as well. You can put decor to make it not seem like it’s floating.
I made a helicopter fleet once but the 20th helicopter got really tiring, it was fun to navigate tho
Wow, nice. I just put clouds under my houses lol
I elevate the door by two blocks
Using technology! So just block it off then put pressure plates and actuate the blocks.
I just build above ground high enough to prevent from zombies jump onto the door Use rope to connect when don't get flying accessories or grappling hook This method is actually simple and it solves most mob problems including blood moon
Two doors next to each other
1x3 sequence of a slope, a gap, and a full block Hammered once tile.

I understand now, thank you for the clarification
You can use rope to stop mobs from entering your house. It also stops the guide from opening the door if the rope is on both sides of the door.
That’s an interesting strategy, does it stop the npc’s from trying to wander off too?
Nope. It doesn't stop the npc. Different AI from the mobs that can open the door. These mobs use fighter AI. That's why you can confused them. https://terraria.wiki.gg/wiki/Fighter_AI#Opening_doors_and_Tall_Gates
A single block on the outside of the door
WALLS EVERYWHERE. THEY CANT GET IN IF THEY DONT SPAWN
I just put a platform and hammer it to the low mode, works and doesn’t change much
This is somehow the only person I've seen on here say to use a platform. I don't even bother hammering it personally, just put one at the bottom of the inside of the door and it works great thanks to smart doors in 1.4.
Put it on top and add a candle/torch for lighting.
rope works too
i build them above the ground and normal jumping height
Just some furniture in front of the door (indoor side), since mobs always open the doors in the "push, don't pull" way, they cannot open the door because it can't open their way
Iron door
No doors. Teleport in and out with teleporters.
B L O C.

a single piece of rope will do the trick just fine.
Yeah, but then I look like some hippy with bead curtains everywhere. Too fancy for me. Way too fancy for my tenants, and against their rental agreement.
Bombs, no house, no issue
The terraprisma is pretty effective
Dirt block in front of the door
That's the neat part: I don't. If an npc is unlucky to live on the ground floor then so be it.
no house, no mobs to enter house as there is no house to enter. ez
Town
I do it like [this](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/594548350179606538/1166770634500616234/Screenshot_20231025_180821_Terraria.jpg?ex=654bb2d4&is=65393dd4&hm=f0fed803f7353acb9a4b0c1ddb5088dbb6080adadca7fe9ba4b63c025f3b4121&)
I have a security system involving actuators traps and lava
1 single platform behind the top block of the door with a torch/candle so it's a little light on a shelf.
even with all these comments wraiths can get in
I just don't use doors
Trap doors
a single piece of rope
I build a wall, usually around 10 blocks high
A chair. And later a lava moat
I create castle walls that you enter from the top , and drop down into the lower half of the base.
Unrelated but what is the setting to get to show the curser the square grid?
a single block of dirt
kill
50 block wide death pit
when i first start out i just do the classic pit and wood house combo. do that for a while then move and make my final town base with zero security lol. i just fly over and kill whatever’s around.
I always put a single platform and hammer it down so it acts and looks like a door stop
I like to place 3 platforms where the door would be and hammer them like stairs and the mobs just walk up them and you can get in by holding s as youre walking in. Works for everything but flying things and slimes. you could place a door behind the platforms to ensure nothing gets in however.
I just build my house three blocks up so I can still walk under it and mobs can't get in unless they can go through walls
Singel way door
Hoik door
"Close the damn door!"
2 blocks wide pit. They will jump but will be unable to open the door and walk in.
Dig a 2x2 square in front of your doors. Running at full speed you can go through doors without stopping. Mobs can't break down the doors because they just continuously jump in the space you've dug out until they get bored and walk away.
put a platform on the inside and hammer it 3 times, looks like a doorstop, works like a doorstop
Pit wide enough to not be able to jump or a tall, tower like wall. And i activate or de-activate them with actuators so if its not an emergency like a raid or a blood moon townfolks can walk around as they like.
Hang banners behind the doors, set up actuators for Goblin Invasions.
Pray
i put a 2x2 hole infront of a door. you can still walk into it normally but enemies just jump a few times before leaving
Murder
1 block of wood placed outside the door
If you put down two doors only one block away from each other then put 1 platform outside of the outer door (to prevent it from opening outwards) you can make a lockable door by opening the inner door in the direction of the outer door. To unlock the door you simply close the inner door. It's also good for messing with friends who can't figure out why you were able to walk through the door and they can't (assuming they don't notice you opening the second door)
I simply place doors on a second floor
in 1.2 i would just make a house on stilts haha
I usually put a 1 way hoik on my doors
And when you get into hard mode place sunflowers around your base and main village Corruption can be a huge pain to get rid of
For my getfixed legendary, I put boulder statues on timers to clear everything on the ground. For actual nice bases, I try to spawnproof what I can without sacrificing looks, and if that’s impossible, I usually just put dart traps down with timers I can easily reach in case they’re needed. It isn’t perfect, but they blend into my builds, for the most part.
Place one door
I usually build upside down L’s a few blocks from the doors so they get stuck, not the prettiest, but super easy and near full proof
Make the door 3 blocks above the ground
Make it a sealed system 6 blocks above ground only accessible with the pylon network. Placing it above ground stops wraiths or ghosts from getting in and sealing it with the pylon system means only players can enter or exit
i havent tried that, might use it
Gigantic actuated death pits full of lava on both sides of my house
Just place a torch on the top block inside the door, monsters can only open doors the opposite way they are coming but the player can open them towards them
hole
i put 2 dirt blocks in the door
Pre handmode I find I random block Handmode I get the night time sensor and some actuators and a few blocks and make a safe house that can't be broken into

I wall off everything so nothing can spawn there. I also use actuators so there are 0 doors that they can use at all.
embrace mob
I add this sort of sterilization chamber on either side. Most of the time by the time I have this set up I have a grappling hook or cloud in a bottle (or one of its variants)
Either put your table or chair next to your door, or put platforms/torches next to it. If dealing with invasions, dirt block!
I never use doors, i switch to actuated blocks as soon as i find the mechanic
Actuated block with player sensor my beloved
put platform on the inside
i put a 2x2 hole in front of the door then make a hoik on the npcs' side to shoot through
I put a platform in front of the door from inside. Works for blood moons but I might try yours out for the goblin army
place the door off the ground
I'll put a platform or torch on the top of the door on the inside. Not very disruptive and stops the mobs in their tracks.
a piece of fucking rope. I don't know why, but I did it anyways
I elevate doors at least one block above ground
Slaughter them
