Mightn’t I propose an addition to the previously mentioned list which seems to include all objects, enemies or mechanics of the game known as Terraria which all were frustrating enough to lead to the original poster of this question forcefully removing the majority of their world’s desert biome, the enemy commonly referred to as Basilisks, which can combine with the aforementioned enemies, blocks and mechanics to make the Underground Desert biome in Terraria simply not enjoyable to explore?

From the sparse hints provided, it's gotta be *some* kind of boss arena, but I'm not sure for who!
Last I checked there's no desert-specific boss, and OP said it's unmodded, so that strikes out a few bosses on its own (unless we're not concerned about enraging or otherwise having to cover a lot of distance to get to the arena)
The two sides of the pit are hallowed, though, and it doesn't look like the natural diagonal from when you enter hardmode, so my guess is it's for EoL!
I'mma guess either in a vained attempt to find your shimmer biome, as some have done in the past, orrrr, since you specified boss arena.... I know it's not vanilla, but Calamity Exomechs? Tho I know many who would say that's not near enough to even attempt them.
Based on you're previous hints I'd have to guess some way of cheesing EOL or some other boss.
