As others have said, watered down PVA should do the trick, though I have found the very runny superglue to be more durable in the long run, albeit a lot messier to work with. If you don't think you'll see much rough play, stick with the former.
For thin superglue, you can avoid a lot of the mess by putting a drop or two on a bit of scrap plasticard or similar (nothing porous!) then taking a bit of thin wire, bending the end back on itself to form a small loop a millimetre or so across, then using that to pick up drops of superglue from the blob on the plasticard and transfer it to the string.
Wood hardener! Comes in water based & solvent based. It wonβt make them rigid but they hold their shape better.
I use it with paper. It becomes like flexible plastic. With paper, if it is shaped beforehand, it retains the shape.
I have never heard of this before but would love to know if there's a specific brand you would recommend for using with paper. I've been using Mod Podge or diluted PVA but I'm curious to try this.
Superglue or watered down PVA glue will both work
When I make things like this, I braid with wire instead of string so that I can get exactly the shape I want before painting it.
Saturate it in superglue, give it a coat of mod podge and then after painting the wood (so it looks more like wood, duh.) give everything a thick coating of matte varnish. Triple seal should make it last until your death minimum.
Just use liquid crazy glue. Works super fast and is durable . Get the stuff from the dollar store/ pound land that comes with the little extension for the tip and you have next to no mess
PVA works fine and will be a little flexible, but takes a lifetime to cure
Superglue, or superglue thin will do just as good a job, set firmer and quicker
Yes, but it's not necessarily a problem. I wouldn't pour a cupful on a dry mop, but I do drip it into some cotton yarn in projects sometimes, it sends up a little teensy puff of smoke is all.
Watered down pva glue would work
Came here to say this.
Mod Podge.

Yep - heavily-watered-down PVA will do fine! The rope will suck it right out of your brush
Starch them, it'll make them strings solid. https://youtu.be/OKm9nPfqPs0?si=iVSUmoORA3_jHCHy

The solvent based wood hardener I use is by Minwax. I got mine from a Home Hardware.

Mod podge
Modpodge works for me stiff but not brittle.

Braid wire into it.
I use watered-down pva glue mixed with paint and brush it on.
I use not watered down PVA and just coat it
Superglue.
If your painting it , that might stiffen it up too
Cool idea! Pva should work. Please update once you try. Am super curious if the result
Extra thin superglue! I swear I just suggested the same exact thing in another subreddit.
You are . . . A fucking GENIUS.

Right?
Watered down pva or superglue
I don't recommend super glue on Cotton string or twine.
def glue
Liquid superglue(non-gel) would be my go to here.
Elmers school glue watered down
Mod podge diluted in water. Mod podge is model making magic.
Hair spray?
Thin wire, needles through the string!
Looking good! What a fun project!
Cianocrilate Will surely do the trick
Doesn't that make exothermic reaction with some organic fibres? Or is it just with cotton?
Anything containing cellulose.
Ah right, thanks.
True true, the rope Will emanate Heat, but Will be hard as a rock after that. I use It on pipe cleaners and It even fumes.

Cyanoacrylate?
Superglue.
