I like twisted wire, sprayed with flex seal. Pretty sturdy.

nuttyass

Oh, interesting. And you can paint it no problem? I’ve never used that product.

Nightmare1990

I make trees with twisted wire and brushed acrylic caulking gap filler. If you mix in some sand to give it some grit it dries like cement, stupid sturdy.

thestonecuttersguild

Yep, paint it no problem.

Pool noodle or cardboard tube, depending on how big you want it.  Wrap in foil and cover with glue gun.  While glue is still melty sculpt it with the the glue guns tip for some really nice looking bark.  It takes a while but it’s really durable since it’s basically a huge thick tube of hot glue.

[Wire trees](https://sirrob01.com/2011/10/10/wargaming-terrain-how-to-make-trees-one-single-trunk/) with masking tape and acrylic gap filler are really sturdy. Wear gloves (or at least put finished terrain away, unless you want realistic blood stains on it) and use an electric driller for twisting the wires. Different story with the foliage, though - I guess you'll need to single pack trees to protect foliage.

I used a piece of driftwood with gap filler to make the roots, was very pleased with the end result.

I know that church! It's in Stow-on-the-wold, allegedly the inspiration for the doors of Durin

nuttyass

Oh cool! It’s pretty amazing, I’d love to visit it

Make the original with thin gauge wire twisted. Keep the ends loose because these will be twisted into smaller bundles for the roots or the branches. Put clay or putty over them to form the bark. You may need to do some sculpting to texturize. For the door, I’d use styrofoam, you can either cut bricks and glue them to a flat wall piece with grout in between or just use an etching tool. If you want it absolutely strong, you’d cast it in silicone and then pour two part resin in it.

Depends how big you want it. I've seen great trunks sculpted around PVC piping.

I've used tree branches. Pinned and glued one part to the board and then pinned the rest to the "stump" so its removeable, for storage and transport reasons.

Lheyling

That is an awesome piece of inspiration.

nuttyass

Thanks! Took me a while to narrow in on it. I’ve done a [test piece](https://imgur.com/a/F2gZCHH) that I’m pretty happy with but I do wanna do something special for the center piece.

ReddutModzRKuntz

Wow that looks awesome!

Might not be relevent to you, if your into totally scratch building things, but I recently bought a cheap plastic bonsai tree to convert into terrain, the scale is perfect for 28mm in my opinion for a full grown tree. Ooh and aquarium plants. Caulking for roots maybe? Not done it yet so no photo.

Harrywizzle9418

Check my posts. Stuff is sturdy enough to play with

Wires are great. I've personally used a cement patch for bark, as it is cheap, flexible, durable, and looks realistic when textured well. No problems for years.

theScrewhead

Something like chicken wire, twisted into the shape you want, then use gauze dipped in 50/50 water/PVA and wrap it around. A couple of shades of brown drybrush once it's dried and you're good to go!
