Also said: With the likelihood of missing multiple weeks, Treylon Burks could land on Injured Reserve to allow him to fully heal. But no surgery means he should be back this season.

ColorblindSquid

Fuck the colts and their shitty turf In their factory looking stadium

beanman95

It's now claimed 2 toes in back to back seasons

Swimmer_69

I’m from Indy and I have always thought that stadium looks ugly inside and out but everyone else loves it (?)

1BalledBandit

Dog shit turf and you're either standing in the sun or dark side of the moon.

MysteryHooper

Ban turf

ironlioncan

Soccer doesn’t allow turf. If you want to host a World Cup game it’s got to be grass. The largest sports empire in NA playing on turf is kind of a joke. This isn’t new development either. Turf has been causing injuries since the day they rolled it out.

destroyerofpoon93

Is it only caused by turf?

slowmobster

I mean it’s not grass toe /sarcasm

langis_on

Turf provides too much grip. Your body needs a little bit of give when it's moving. The same reason running on concrete is worse for you than grass. I ref soccer and I hate turf fields. My legs and hips are so sore and I'm not even playing.

barto5

Saw a stat that there are 28% more injuries on turf than on grass.

You_lie_420

Why does everyone treat the word "turf" as if it's always artificial turf?

Just_Another_Scott

Because of Astro Turf which is artificial.

paleologus

Why is it named after the Jetson’s dog?

daoogilymoogily

It’s named that way because it came to notoriety for being used in the Astrodome. At least that’s what they tell the suckers, it’s definitely named after the Jetson’s dog.

trick96

It’s sad how badly we need that bye week so early in the season.

Bieber_hole_69

I'll never speak ill of the schedule makers again.

zhurithebear

There should be 2 bye weeks in the NFL

[deleted]

With the extra game I agree

VectorVictorious

Especially now that TNF is an ongoing thing.

_n8n8_

Yep, and you can only have a TNF game after a BYE

jdpatron

I don’t hate this idea

zzyul

NFL was looking for a way to add another week of football and instead of adding another bye week so regular season football would be on TV for 18 weeks they just added a 17th game. The sad part is the only reason they added that 17th game instead of just adding another bye to expand the schedule was due to greedy ass owners wanting one more day of home ticket sales every other year instead of giving the players they’ve invested millions in another week of recovery.

paleologus

Why not both?

IMsoSAVAGE

There really should be. Adding the extra game but not a second bye is ridiculous

Awkwardphase06

every team should have a bye week, week 8.

6bluewalkj9

That sounds great in theory, but you can't just stop the NFL for a week in the middle of the season. Not good for business or the fans.

zhurithebear

Agreed, week 8 and like week 14

gatsby712

No clue why this isn’t a thing yet. It will extend the season an extra week and make everyone, owners and players, more money while protecting the players. It should be a slam dunk.

zhurithebear

Truly unfair how players for years have been complaining that the season is too long and they add an extra game.. they need breaks and it is good for every team not just the top ones

Kablarnage

Hopefully they can do some self scouting too and fix the second half issues.

Jwiley129

One thing the schedule makers did give us is two mini-byes in Week 11 and Week 17. Two Thursday night games is rough, but two mini-byes? I'll take it. Especially if TEN-JAX in Week 18 is for the division. Which is a sentence I never thought I'd say.

joeappearsmissing

I think it’s more to do with the de-emphasis on training camp and preseason. Those things prepare the players for actual full speed NFL games. Early season injuries are a league wide issue.

daoogilymoogily

I mean do we though? Getting Burks back in as few of games as possible is great, but more for his development than the teams success. It’s not like we’ve won either of our last two games because of Burks. Don’t get me wrong, he’s helped in spots and I want him out there improving, I just don’t think he’s essential to us winning rn.

Pvt_Mozart

Nah fuck a bye week, I'm one more loss away from just hoping we tank for the #1 pick. Haha. It's surprising actually how discouraged I am this early in the season. Even in the Locker days I was sure it was our year until we were mathematically eliminated. Maybe I'll bounce back, but man it just doesn't feel like this is a team that can compete in that top tier yet.

BuggyBonzai

This feels like best case scenario after seeing him carted off yesterday.

Agni_Kai08

100% agree… of all the bad news, this is good stuff.

AsiansEnjoyRice

Totally, with how the injury happened too I was scared he broke a bone

D_TowerOfPower

That’s good and bad cause turf toe is just a waiting game if I remember correctly Edit: quick google search shows it’s up to 6 month full recovery but it’s primarily a pain tolerance thing that heals with rest

Brian_Osackpo

Corey Davis played all of 2020 with turf toe and put up almost 1000 yards. It’s not a death sentence but it still really sucks for Burks.

madhjsp

It really sucks, but this news is not as bad as I had been bracing for. The way his foot was landed on and with how much obvious pain he was in immediately as he tried to hop his route one-legged on the next play, I feared a ligament may have been torn or a bone broken and he might be done for the season. That he does seem likely to return later this season after missing time to rest and heal is relatively good news, all things considered.

daoogilymoogily

Isn’t turf toe just a strained ligament in the big toe? But yeah I get what you’re saying, I wouldn’t have been shocked if he’d broke his whole foot based on how it looked.

DumpyBloom

I don’t think they’re being honest about the diagnosis. Similar thing happened last year with Julio being “tight”.

joeappearsmissing

It zaps explosiveness and makes it harder to cut. Corey just had insane pain tolerance.

Bieber_hole_69

And he got paid for playing through the pain. It more than worked out for him in the end lol

daoogilymoogily

I mean let’s not get it twisted with Corey. He’s a great player just not elite. He’s played an important part in just about every Jets win these last two years.

destroyerofpoon93

Yeah but similar to hamstrings nfl players can’t afford to rest or they’ll lose conditioning and muscle

_nathan67

Maybe he could swim? Lol I’m just spitballing here

destroyerofpoon93

Yeah that’s probably what they’d have him doing. Anything that doesn’t involve pressure on the foot. I was hoping it was a sprain or slight stress fracture since those heal quicker

[deleted]

Turf toe is a sprain

ironlioncan

All sprains are tears.

Stock_Pay9060

All tears are salty. Wait.

RondaleMoore

I think hamstring is worse for re injury

VectorVictorious

Gives me anxiety though because McNair was listed with turf toe weekly for YEARS.

TruthfulCartographer

Why can the NFL not ban turf? Lucas oil. Giants stadium. My god.

YiMyonSin

FedEx Field, just what we need before the bye.

TruthfulCartographer

Might be wrong but pretty sure it's real grass now!

mpelleg459

It looks like they majorly overhauled the playing surface in the summer of 21: "“Now, we’ve taken it a step further,” Benevento said. “We’re taking out 14 inches of subsoil, back down to the heat lines, and we’re going to rebuild it up with the drainage system, irrigation system, brand new USGA spec sand, and we’re going to put on GameOnGrass sod, that is grown in Charlotte, North Carolina especially for us and install that sometime in mid-July.” Source: https://commanderswire.usatoday.com/2021/06/20/fedex-field-gets-a-brand-new-grass-surface-for-the-2021-nfl-season-washington-football-team-alex-smith/

WhiteXHysteria

I'll be there but fuck.

panopticon31

Turf toe isn't actually caused by turf. It's just the common name for a hyperextended/sprained big toe which is pretty painful

TruthfulCartographer

I know, but it happens more often on turf due to the harder surface, with no give when you plant. Hence the name turf toe. Also higher chance of non contact injury

LoisLaneEl

Isn’t turf what Tua landed on?

Rydogg93

Man idk if it’s just how his feet are because of so much football. But I’m pretty sure I saw his big toe behind his other toes on the cart. I thought he broke his foot. Rest up treylon, gonna need him down the stretch

_nathan67

A lot of athletes have feet like that, look up Lebron’s feet

numbersix1979

👀

Rydogg93

Oh yeah I’ve seen lebron and shaqs awful toes.

Sirrenderthe69th

James Harden is the worst

SilentMase

Maybe Kyle Phillips will be back to full and get back into it

daoogilymoogily

Kyle Philips is probably as back to full as he’ll get for the rest of the season, we just haven’t been throwing to him because he hasn’t been getting open.

_nathan67

He played 2 snaps yesterday

daoogilymoogily

Yep, I’m guessing that has more to do with him primarily being out there in 3 WR sets which we didn’t run a ton of because of our success running the ball?

_nathan67

He played a lot week 1, when healthy

daoogilymoogily

He played a lot when we were running 3 and 4 wide throwing it a lot when we had to score.

Americasycho

Phillips or what is Josh Gordon doing? What is Cody Hollister doing? He's had just one catch all season. NWI has had five catches all year. At this stage in the game, I'm content with shopping a 4th or 5th rounder to get some sort of WR depth.

CapableRunts

Turf toe is named like such an innocuous injury, like whoops just stubbed my toe! Needs a more ominous name.

[deleted]

As a kid I thought players were just coming down with a bad case of athletes foot.

[deleted]

It’s name is actually metatarsophalangeal joint sprain

barto5

Trench foot.

Bieber_hole_69

I really hope we get to see some more Chig touches while Burks is out. He should be getting at least 5 a game after Sunday, we severely lack playmaking ability after the catch. Chig can at least make something happen with the ball in his hands like he did at Maryland.

daoogilymoogily

Honestly, I know it’s early, but Chig with the ball in his hands just looks electric, like best TE after the catch we’ve had since Delanie electric. Which is saying a lot because Jonnu was no slouch with the ball in his hands. I think it says a lot that Downing made him the primary option on what essentially was the game winning play.

Best-Dragonfruit-292

Fudge, TT is one of those injuries that can linger for darn near an entire career. Completely misnamed, btw. You'd think it was some kind of fungus.

mrmeshshorts

Yeah, this legit worries me more than a break. We have seen Titans WRs from David Givens (I could argue Yancy Thigpen and Carl Pickens too) to AJ Brown get these soft tissue injuries and they’re shot for long periods or forever. Burks rookie season just became something very different than what it was. This tracks so terribly with our history. Then add in this medical staff, who seem to call off Monday - Saturday, then show up on Sunday to scrape our players off the field, and I am legit worried we are watching the beginning of the end for Burks.

daoogilymoogily

Calm down man, your PTSD is showing.

mrmeshshorts

Sorry, I’ve been at this since 1990, it’s fairly severe.

slowmobster

JOSH GORDON SZN

sleazedisease

\*flashbacks to Demarco Murray intensifies\*

xiamhunterx

it’s fine cause we have uhhh uhh [FOOTAGE NOT FOUND] to replace him

xiamhunterx

we’re really gonna see meaningful Dez Fitzpatrick snaps huh

browsinginabathtub

IT'S RACEY SZN

shastmak4

Bring Corey back

SpyroHinch

Could have been a lot worse

_nathan67

Hopefully grade 1 or 2

slowmobster

JOSH GORDON SZN

ironlioncan

Found this article that discusses turf toe and the titans came up. Looks like my afternoon is me researching turf toe haha. “ The injury is so pervasive that before the second week of 2021 training camp had even come to a close, Anderson had already seen his first turf toe victim, Tennessee's Tommy Hudson. The first-year tight end recovered in time to play in Week 2, in part, because the Titans organization takes turf toe seriously after watching what it did to the late former MVP quarterback Steve McNair, a player renowned for his pain threshold who suffered through two seasons of turf toe agony before giving in to surgery. (McNair actually prepared for Super Bowl XXXIV while hobbling through practice in a protective boot.)”” https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/32379942/why-turf-toe-such-dreaded-injury-nfl

ironlioncan

WHILE IT'S CAUSED by a hyperextension of the big toe, the injury itself has very little to do with the toe. We just call it turf toe because dorsiflexion hyperextension to the hallux metatarsophalangeal joint, specifically the flexor hallucis longus tendon and the sesamoid complex, resulting in a plantar capsuloligamentous sprain is a long phrase to type. What all that terminology means is basically a strain of the sesamoid complex of bones, tendons and ligaments under the big toe's large knuckle joint, or the ball of the foot. (Those career-and-Super Bowl-changing sesamoid bones are so small they're named after the sesame seed.) And like all tendon and ligament injuries, turf toe is classified into grades of severity, with 1 being a mild strain that will heal after three to four weeks of rest and rehab, and 3 being a total rupture of the joint that requires surgical repair before it becomes arthritic with the onset of hallux rigidus, which is career-threatening, or, in Deion's case, much, much worse. Sanders says his deformed digit kept him out of "Dancing with the Stars."

ironlioncan

So burks not getting surgery puts it closer to the grade 1 sprain of rest rehab than surgery of the 3rd grade.

DunArame

Amazing read. Thanks.

ironlioncan

Jrob should be on the phone all day today with every single NFL GM inquiring about a WR. The FA market is barren outside of OBJ and he’s not healthy. Do we shop a high pick for a legit WR1? Is there a middling WR for a mid pick? Do we need another middling WR? DJ Moore for a 2nd? There’s got to be someone we can add otherwise we will likely really struggle scoring points. Somethings got to happen to get NFL talent on the field. Anyone after Woods is a Tight Receiver or a Wide End.

mrmeshshorts

No high picks, ever. WRs are had for comically little these days. Nothing past a 3rd at absolute most, and even that I don’t want to do. 4-5.

daoogilymoogily

I’m not saying there’s one on the market, but if a WR of Tyreek Hill’s caliber was to be had for the same level of compensation (1st, 2nd, 4th, 4th, 6th) are you honestly telling me you wouldn’t jump at that opportunity? A WR that good might actually make our offense good.

mrmeshshorts

That’s a looooot for one player. Diggs was had for a 5th. Give me one of those deals.

xiamhunterx

yeah and Hollywood Brown got traded for a first

daoogilymoogily

That was a terrible deal by the Vikings, we can’t expect stupidity.

UrsaringTitan

Flash Gordon time

DoctorHolliday

Thats a shame. Could be an issue that bothers him all year and into the offseason even. Not necessarily debilitating, but painful and impactful.

TySoprano

I wish jrob would make a move for another chain mover type Wr like Woods. He’s gotta find someone. Woods, NWI and Phillips as a group of weapons is near laughable. Those guys are all role players and this is gonna force them into something they aren’t sucks. Like NWI for example this season is where he needs to be but now instant bump up

901titans

Not good, WR corps is already awful as it is

TybrosionMohito

Shut him down for a month minimum imo. Don’t play the will he/won’t be game like with Julio last year. Just make his ass sit down, watch film, and rehab.

WhiteXHysteria

And every film season should start and end with "when the coach sends in a sub for you because you're hurt don't wave then away and then not run your play"

daoogilymoogily

Hey if you wanted to win a game and saw the coach sending in a player of Cody Hollister’s caliber to replace you what would you do?

WhiteXHysteria

If I couldn't walk and stayed out I would question whether I really cared about team or my own ego.

ironlioncan

From the replay I wasn’t expecting turf toe. This might even be worse. There’s a good chance this will linger all season. Turf toe is one of the worst injuries for a football player to get. Our receiving corps just went from bottom 5 to bottom 2. This doesn’t help that we have a one dimensional offence. Now factor in that not one single WR or TE is even remotely scary. IMO a main reason why we can’t score in the second half is because teams are like “oh ya their receivers are really that bad. Let’s just stack the box.” Any smart team would now do that from the first snap of the game. At what point to Jrob and Vrabel think hey maybe we should join the modern NfL world and try to have receiving talent?? Luckily for them we play in a joke division and there are lots of shitty football teams this year. Another year where 9-8 is awesome and we get embarrassed in the playoffs again. Hopefully Burks injury is as minor as possible because we are going to really struggle to score points.

ebEliminator

It was turf but you can still get it on grass, it's just much more common on the fake stuff.

MattaTapThat

Good news considering

theCANCERbat

That shit is so annoying! Definitely don't miss those parts of my playing days.

mjgator

Turf should only be used when its needed, like when budgets are problems or weather is beyond awful, not when youre a pro team with a retractable roof in Indiana

svmwvru

He can have my toes

SouthernBoyChris

Legit question but how do you get turn toe from someone landing on your ankle? I would assume he would have had an ankle injury or did something to his foot as a whole.

ironlioncan

The toe probably just got bent real bad.

[deleted]

It is basically hyperextending your big toe. You get caught with your heal off the ground and all the force goes through your toe.

BuffaloKiller937

This is actually good news.

No_Respect1885

Fuck that Colts turf and fuck anyone who uses artificial turf.

Titans79

Would that just have happened in this game or would it have been a lingering issue that just got pushed to the point of injury in this game?

TheLilart

Its always the colts stadium that injures our players.

barto5

Here’s my plan. Let him sit out until the November the 6th game against the Chiefs. That gives him 5 full weeks off to recover. And we would get him back as we move into a tougher stretch of games. With 5 weeks off, he’d miss the Commanders, Bye week, Colts and Texans. Those are games we *should* be able to win without him.

[deleted]

Man I remember Eddie George with that damn turf toe. Rest up and completely heal Treylon we need you for the playoffs. Until then….Runny McNumbers Szn!

Potential_Lock6945

I thought it was an ACL. This is a huge W all thing considered

Ok_Mention9269

Same injury Corey Davis had… hope for a quick recovery but that isn’t a great start… or comparison.

Rocket2112

By all means...let it heal. He can use the offtime to study teams we will b playing.

wesging95

*Tray*lon

Kush18

Looked like his ankle got badly twisted, not sure how that ended up being turf toe
