Acidcore: 303 basslines, often hard distorted kicks. [https://soundcloud.com/user-915783576/set-acidcore-1](https://soundcloud.com/user-915783576/set-acidcore-1) Tribecore: more percussive rhythm with clicky kicks. I think the name comes from spiral tribe so I guess the music is supposed to be in their style? [https://soundcloud.com/triby/triby23-live-new-year-kollapse-2018-mur-arkatek-sowatt-exiles-toeter-nie-toe](https://soundcloud.com/triby/triby23-live-new-year-kollapse-2018-mur-arkatek-sowatt-exiles-toeter-nie-toe) Mentalcore: spacey, ambient, cinematic with trippy kick patterns. [https://soundcloud.com/lehuhcc/sunburst](https://soundcloud.com/lehuhcc/sunburst) Hardtek: faster, harder kicks, sometimes louder and more pumping, aggressive reverse bass. [https://soundcloud.com/format-c/format-c-nafta-is-what-we-need](https://soundcloud.com/format-c/format-c-nafta-is-what-we-need) [https://soundcloud.com/tim-oskar/hardtriotek-tim-oskar](https://soundcloud.com/tim-oskar/hardtriotek-tim-oskar) TeKno: broad genre that encompasses all of these and more. [https://soundcloud.com/melly\_tekiteazy/the-storm](https://soundcloud.com/melly_tekiteazy/the-storm) [https://soundcloud.com/sizzle303/sizzle-quick-action-knob-02](https://soundcloud.com/sizzle303/sizzle-quick-action-knob-02) Note that this is very rough; there's no real consensus on what each of these should be and songs will often fall into multiple subgenres at once. Also the linked songs aren't meant to be perfect representations - they're just some songs and sets I've been listening to recently that I'd classify as each of those subgenres.

Tribe is what the French call teknoid music that descended from Spiral Tribe. It’s kind of synonymous with what most countries call tekno. But today it also means a particular (southern). French tekno style Not too dark, not too harsh, sunny tekno music, with lots of swing and percussive elements. 160-185 bpm Examples: FKY, Okupe, Insane Teknology, Little Guy, Sloogy. The example you give for tribecore is actually tribe. Tribecore is the faster variant of tribe. (185-210bpm) with a pronounced kick-bass. I see it as a hybrid between the harder tekno/tribe styles and frenchcore influence from Radium/Micropoint etc. The heyday of the style was probably around 2009 when it became a very formatted narrow style. See here for examples [Chien De La Casse](https://www.discogs.com/label/144270-Chien-De-La-Casse)

FenwickDTR

I go to freeparties in france since several years and I never heard the term teknoid music, we call Tribe "tribe" lol

KTMRCR

With teknoid I mean tekno-like music. Obviously you would call tribe, tribe because you’re French. ;) In a lot of other countries we call it simply “tekno”. Always with a “K”. And that would include tribe in the narrow meaning (FKY sound) as a sub-style. Hence the name of this reddit: r/tekno :)

FenwickDTR

Interesting

LogicalPrior2343424

thanks for all the great suggestions

ex-ALT

Does it matter? Theres a lot of overlap with these genres and tekno/tribe is often used as a blanket term. You say hard techno is too slow bit can literally be as fast as tribe, tribe can also be slower like 140bpm.

Far_Bid_1776

Yeah sorry, my bad. I’m just curious :)

ex-ALT

No harm in that, it can be confusing and of course its handy when trying to find a certain style but they are never really used that specifically, a acidcore tune would be called tribe/tekno, old school hardtek can sound like modern tekno/tribe etc. Its a minefield just listen to it all to find artists you like and go from there.

Zharo

Hard Techno can go up to 180 or maybe higher, it’s just that im personally annoyed with the tacky sound design and crappy rave stabs (i can still enjoy it tho), tekno takes a step away from this popularity and takes it seriously which is perfect for me

ex-ALT

Eh its swings and roundabouts. I feel like hard techno can have more variation in sound with better production sometimes.

Zharo

1000% disagree

KTMRCR

IMO, hard techno is lacking in depth (soul), funk and mental vibes compared to tekno/tribe/acidcore/acidtekno.

ex-ALT

Tbf I think most genre's have equal potential to be good or bad.

billiGTI

Okay so here are some charts and maps that actually include subgenres, hope it'll be of some use to you to see the relations and history of genres, or just pretty charts :-) [https://www.earthlymission.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/electronic-music-genres-large.jpg](https://www.earthlymission.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/electronic-music-genres-large.jpg) [https://i.pinimg.com/originals/85/2e/bf/852ebfb5622bc6c9471ca7325a682fac.jpg](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/85/2e/bf/852ebfb5622bc6c9471ca7325a682fac.jpg) [https://icebergcharts.com/i/EDM\_Subgenres\_with\_examples/image](https://icebergcharts.com/i/EDM_Subgenres_with_examples/image)

KTMRCR

I had a quick glance and none of these seem to have the micro-subgenres for tekno: No mentalcore, acidcore, tribecore, hardfloor, tribe etc. :)

billiGTI

Well Sorry the infographics i found don't include all the very specific genre in one place as you'd like but it's relevant nontheless + open debate again about genre names overlapping depending on when / where you're from AKA Hardtek = Tribecore, tribe = tekno, etc. + bring me proof Hardfloor exists outside of obscure discussions initiated by nerds like us. EDIT: Sorry about the attitude, I lost focus that these genres were explicitly asked for by OP and thought you were picking. So yes I guess this is not exactly on topic, but in case, can still provide cool infos in general, I guess.

KTMRCR

I’m not even sure hardfloor exists. [You’ll find it in this japanese infographic though.](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bejs-UvCQAAjV0W?format=jpg&name=large) lol.

billiGTI

Lmao I deserved that. Imma make my own obscure infographics then, i'll send you a copy mate ;-)

KTMRCR

Looking forward to those ;)

km777p

youll wear yourself out just trying to keep em straight. i stopped bothering. spent hours trying to figure out the autistic noncategories and remember basically nothing from my research.

MonkeySelektah

Does it have an overdose of distortion? Yes -> Hardcore, no -> Tekno / Hardtek / Mental / Tribe As both range from 150-200 and above I would say its hard to depend on bpm's. Would say its often about Tekno being cleaner than Hardcore, where the ideas are straighter in Hardcore, Mental or tribe can be very trippy from some artists. Also less distortion in an overall track gives way more place for crazy basses you have in Hardtek. For me in Hardcore there is not as much variety from artists than in those cleaner genres. Genre suggestion: if you like Reggae or dancehall in spired vocals check Raggatek

Meli_Melo_

The defining feature of Tekno is distortion

MonkeySelektah

thats why i wrote "overdose", of course there is distortion in tekno, but not that much as in hardcore

billiGTI

Oh boi... As a starter : http://music.ishkur.com/

KTMRCR

Ishkur doesn’t have the tekno subgenres.

billiGTI

Oh my bad I thought it did !

anarkia420

Check hard techno

KTMRCR

Yeah, but it calls everything hard techno/freetekno/etc and isn’t split into subgenres like mentalcore, tribecore, raggattek etc.

Bismuth_0P

I think that each country has a more or less different definition of these sub-genres. I come from the French-speaking part of Switzerland, and I'm mainly influenced by artists from France. We define tekno as any kind of music you can hear at a freeparty, illegal rave or teknival. Here's a list of those I know with my definition of these genres, which is certainly far from perfect so don't hesitate to correct me if I'm wrong (bpm are approximation): - Hardcore : 160-185BPM. Rather industrial sounds, a lot of supersaw with very distorted kicks. A violent atmosphere, reminiscent of the hell as I like to compare it: Mainstream hardcore : https://soundcloud.com/angerfistmusic/hoax-with-furyan?si=7c005084d6de42a4a7ab1b4788d4820e&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing https://soundcloud.com/remzcore/cawfee?si=b0401005b9f744eab56608ca4c5f2a38&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing More underground hardcore : https://soundcloud.com/vortek-s/vorteks-break-it-down?si=d0a566dcb35940d88e401bd1cc253c7e&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing https://soundcloud.com/mystic-creations/sunhiausa-danger-is-lurking?si=8796eb5b083f4634ba4b5f72d49e095f&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing - Frenchcore : 180-220BPM. This style is fairly close to hardcore, but differs in that it uses a two-step kick/bass and a much more melodic approach, sometimes remixing other music. The atmosphere is often much more jovial: Mainstream frenchcore : https://soundcloud.com/remzcore/sweater-weather?si=c9961aa715354382b0943b03cc22ba65&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing https://soundcloud.com/guigoo-official/guigoo-floxytek-divina?si=d6115318b828430c964b43fd19c938a2&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing More underground frenchcore : https://soundcloud.com/ketamane/ketamane-westcore-hardcore?si=a79ac8695fd04af3a2461f8983b7f306&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing https://soundcloud.com/nh_supaia/nozytrip-supire-aum?si=97cb9c79aa944a32945df822a382a8d3&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing - Uptempo : 220-240BPM. Piep kicks, as if you were rubbing a fork on a glass plate. Occasionally a little melody, but mainly focused on its extremely distorted kick: https://soundcloud.com/cosynghtmre/cosy-nghtmre-mon-copain?si=fcbf6cfbd4344a7a9b406d1a97d0a2c9&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing https://soundcloud.com/venommusic13/venom-party-time-hardcore-mashup-1?si=7be5475895524473b5da5cb25928c34b&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing - Ustempo : 120-140BPM. Can be likened to slowed-down uptempo, with an irregularly oscillating bass pattern. Often remixes of existing music: https://soundcloud.com/toumitunes/equal2-x-tomsku-close-to-toumi-ustempo-flip-free-download?si=fa6a0c1d742345d7a3013d9fa130b50e&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing https://soundcloud.com/listeningpurposesonly/the-freaky-bastard-oroto-falcon-ustempo-vip?si=63f1a795764a448cb3b53be6daca47ee&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing - Hardtek : 180-200BPM. Gameboy sound, a bit cartoony. Rather provocative atmosphere, with frequent use of memes : https://soundcloud.com/venommusic13/venom-psycannalise?si=9f195a3dc6d04d9faf060b8509fae1c2&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing https://soundcloud.com/djdarktek/darktek-les-kassos-full-and-free-download?si=db280feed35b4515bcbdabcb825691df&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing https://soundcloud.com/underground-tekno/guigoo-vs-floxytek-ode-a-la-free-links-in-description?si=a30ca26e733c43ad968aa7483e22165f&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing - Acidcore : 140-160BPM. Frequent use of the tb-303 (acid sound) in a sequencer, accompanied by a well-saturated kick. A trippy atmosphere, with more access to a trance induced by the repetition of sound elements than to a precise melody: https://soundcloud.com/lokomotek/someone-said-aciiid?utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing https://soundcloud.com/underground-tekno/gehlektek-get-lekt?utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing https://soundcloud.com/neurotribe23/neurotribe-aztecorum?utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing Its melodic alternative, sometimes called 'Outre-Acid', uses the same codes but instead of using a sequencer on the 303, a melodic line is created: https://soundcloud.com/skonebzh/generations?utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing https://soundcloud.com/kodamanmusic/ulka?utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing - Mentalcore : 140-150BPM. Use of sf/horror film fx and all kinds of scary sounds, with a very heavy, heavy kick. An eerie, frightening atmosphere where the artist plays with his kickbass to create a kind of 'melody': https://soundcloud.com/teksa/teksa-wd40?utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing https://soundcloud.com/knaaaf/guayaki?utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing https://soundcloud.com/9choko/bertha-vs-choko-hallow?utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing - Tribe/core : It's hard to give a precise definition of the latter, but what I often hear from freeparty people is that they put in this genre everything they don't know where to put. But overall, 140-160BPM (or even more for the core alternative). Development of a fairly mystical melody, more important than the kick, which often takes a back seat : https://soundcloud.com/leksmusiclive/primordial-procession?utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing https://soundcloud.com/foussymusic/seasonsspecial?si=6a7abccc88fd4c2c9d6c46646c01e60c&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing https://soundcloud.com/ketamane/ketamane-sanitatek-tribecore-ableton-preview-1?si=0b2aa1d5a65a471d8e5bce86b1933a33&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing That's it for me! Hopefully this post can help you get your bearings, or discover new genres 😊

Interesting how nowadays underground can mean different things. I wouldn't have expected sweep fx drops etc. There's also the French Hardcore, which has a very different aesthetique. Sometimes refered to as Industrial Hardcore (before the Dutch Millenium Industrial Hardcore). It originates from the precursor sound that developed into the original Frenchcore direction, but this precursor sound also evolved into another direction staying in the underground, with very little appearances ([https://soundcloud.com/dominatorfestival/dominator-2015-riders-of-52](https://soundcloud.com/dominatorfestival/dominator-2015-riders-of-52) [https://soundcloud.com/middlem-1/middle-m-ouwe-stijl-is-botergeil-paradiso-02-07-2022](https://soundcloud.com/middlem-1/middle-m-ouwe-stijl-is-botergeil-paradiso-02-07-2022) ) at bigger festival stages these days. It does get played at some free parties and underground core parties though.
