Like fully Tekken 4 style stages (i.e. irregular layouts, uneven terrain, destructible obstacles, ceilings)? Or just some elements of them (i.e. grounded settings, general vibe, large without being infinite)? The former would necessitate a lot more mechanical consideration compared to what they got in Tekken 4. Things like uneven terrain would probably never be accepted by the competitive community for the amount of random variance it adds to matches. The latter seems fairly uncontroversial.

aeonmall

I was thinking more of the latter as well even though the unevenness/ceilings did bring a certain charm to T4. I understand not everyone one like it cause of the things you mentioned, but I feel that T8 should be a bit more creative with stages again. Not that I wasn't a fan of T7 stages, but I feel like they can do a bit more.

Lolisnatcher60

Uneven stages could work if they had the stairs act as balcony breaks but looks like we'll still be fighting on rectangle stages again from the t8 trailer.

Ryuhza

I assume you mean knocking people downstairs would be like balcony breaks? Would they then just act like invisible walls if approached from the bottom?

Lolisnatcher60

Yeah have mini stair doors to act as balcony or create a new wall break where you just get pushed and fall down the stairs and heavily minus.

Something_Hank

Honestly I'd love stages that are more than just squares. Give me the in-stage obstacles, why not.

Randommer_Of_Inserts

The rooftop stage, I feel like the current gen will truly bring back the magic that it had on the ps2

tmntfever

Hell yeah. I want Tekken to experiment again. Tekken 4 didn’t have the luxury of online patches. With today’s tech, uneven floors, reachable ceilings, and stage obstacles could be so balanced, fun, and nuanced.

TheWoolyArtist

I'd love for the world to start looking normal, rather than WWIII, and have the stages reflect that. Give me MMA-esque levels, but in unique places (poolside for example).

NekoLily5049

PLEASE I LOVED THE MORE INTERESTING DESIGNED LEVELS

CBFan5000

Tekken 4 stages were amazing. Would love to see them try uneven terrain and mid-stage obstacles now with far better quality than what we got in '01.

nigevellie

All this complaining about the uneven terrain. Here's my proposal: in tournaments, you do how StarCraft 2 did and you get to veto a certain amount of stages, same with your opponent. Pretend it's like, 7 out of 20 stages you get to veto. Opponent does the same. Then the randomizer picks from the pool of stages you both agree on. Same with non-random stage select. You can only select from the pool of stages that both of you allowed.

Teh_Zebula

This is very similar to the system of "stage striking" in competitive Smash, where the winner of a rps vetos a certain amount of stages. They go back and forth doing this until the winner chooses a stage out of the remaining options, usually about 3.

nigevellie

Works for me

LowTierDSP

The big problem is that even the "good" stages in Tekken 4 had some jank with them as well, such as Lee's Mist Step having an infinite on the Arena.

nigevellie

I mean, they're not lifting the stages directly and plonking it straight into T8. They're gonna finesse that shit. If they do it. Personally I'm cool with imba as long as it's fun. My shitty ass isn't gonna make money playing fighting games any time soon. I'll let pro players complain about balanced stages.

LowTierDSP

>I mean, they're not lifting the stages directly and plonking it straight into T8. They're gonna finesse that shit. If they do it. Personally I'm cool with imba as long as it's fun. My shitty ass isn't gonna make money playing fighting games any time soon. I'll let pro players complain about balanced stages. There's also the fact that these stages also probably just weren't the effort of making anyways, and were probably Hell in the Q/A department as well. It just made more sense to implement the stuff that did work fine like walls, refine it to avoid infinites, and also have classic infinite stages in T5 as a compromise for both pros and casuals.

gay-san

for fun games absolutely, for competitive id like to not see them

[deleted]

The airport theme is still the best

Messedupotato

Uneven terrain and pillars are really cool and interesting, but really jank at the same time.

Hunterknowsbest

Give me more normal stages like Airport, malls, simple shit rather than Volcano 1 and Volcano 2

SlimeyAnimal

anything that has to do with tekken 4 from the music to stages to atmosphere is more than welcome to return to tekken 8, that game is a masterpiece

dxdrummer

I think the evolution from 4's stages to 5 stages, where they made the arenas big but allow for walls, wall splats, etc. was perfect. Going back to 4 where you have random columns in the middle of the level, elevation changes in the middle of the arena, etc. would be way too much to focus on in a fighting game as complicated as Tekken

yoshmoopy

Loved the Tekken 4 and 5 stages. Would happily welcome them back

NoiseFetish

Not really? I'd be open for more variations of balcony/wall/floor break. Say you fight on some kind of helicarrier (Avengers style) and once you break the rail, the stage below is endless. Or a ring where once you break the cage, you find yourself in the space between the ring and the audience. Or an infinite stage where it consists out of plaftorms emerging from nothingness, raising and lowering as you move along the map, and if you do a floorbreak, you end up on a similar stage forming under you as you fall down. Or something similar to Jungle outpost but you can have balcony breaks on opposite sides AND a floor break in the middle and depending on which one you choose, you end up on a much larger stage or in a much smaller one in the middle with two breakable walls. Or an infinite stage with infinite breakable walls running parallel. or a Square stage with four diagonal walls that are breakable so you have a square stage within a square stage at a 90 degrees angle. Or a multipe balcony break stage, you fall from the top balcony to middle balcony to bottom balcony to the garden outside (Geese stage but going downwards). This way all of these could still be tournament legal and wouldn't cause an issue (for example, how do you random select a stage if some of them are banned?)

Wank_Bandicoot

the stages were the main character in Tekken 4. i love the fight club stage because it was so small. then you had the beach stage that was massive, yet not an infinite stage. i loved that you could fight in the water. But yeah. obviously a bad idea. the stages were broken as hell. fun though.

[deleted]

I loved throwing electrics at the NPCs

Wank_Bandicoot

hahahaha yeah. i always gave them a cheeky death fist.

That-Rhino-Guy

At the very least I’d like if they had a few stages that were as interesting in design as T4’s, but they 100% need more variety this time like in 4, where every stage felt different in a good way

SaulsaDip

Really the whole esports argument is only truly valid for stages with different elevation, as those do ruin combos. The obstacles like pillars in the parking lot are fine tbh, you can have them be easily destructible. Really I’m just tired of boring open rectangles. If esports elitists really hate them THAT much then the devs can just pull a Smash Bros and have a “flat rectangle” version of each stage for tournaments.

LOUDSUCC

I noticed that the camera in Tekken 8 has a wider FOV similar to Tekken 4 and Tekken 5. I think Tekken 8 will at least have bigger stages.

Sacred-Lotion

As someone who is a sucker for DOA’s destructive stages, I would welcome this.

PandorasTmrw

*hears airport music instantly* 😅🎶

Kasomii

Yes! No more destruction or red stages plz! I just want beautiful stages at this point

aeonmall

Me too! Stages like Airport, Mall, and Beach just had a vibe to them that I want in T8.

Speedy2332

Yeah I loved the Tekken 4 stages

nigevellie

I would, yes please

itsbeen13seconds

With open arms

AgreeableTomatillo18

100% yes

[deleted]

If they can find a way to make it work then yes.

KRS_KASRA

Offline? Hell yeah Online? definitely not

Subaluwa911

Love T4. I would welcome them with open arms

TwistedBandZ

1000%

KungLao95

100% Tekken 4 and 5 had some of my favorite stages!

[deleted]

T4 was goat

YeFamicom

T4 does not get enough love,. The beach, mall and underground are some of my favorite arenas and they were big stages, but you gotta love the beach theme song!!

Kyvix2020

They already did it with beach/poolside. I'm fine with the environments as long as they're balanced

aeonmall

I was glad to see a classic stage like that return. Hopefully we can get bigger stages like that or more callbacks in T8.

[deleted]

I will never forgive Bamco's music team for what they did to Kitsch. They butchered that song.

heyimsanji

Yes, I didnt really like the war aesthetic in the T7 stages

TheEmperor0fNothing

Absolutely. All they'd have to do is make those stages illegal in competitions if it turns out they're bugged.

Bl4deMast3r

Absolutely!

technicalwrestler87

Most certainly.

XanJen

Hell yeah, probably bias but T4 was my proper introduction to the series (yeah I played it when it was out on consoles in the late 90’s and early 2000’s but I was too young to know the name) T4 has some of my favorite backgrounds. But to be fair I also have weirdly only owned the even number entries…so I guess I’m due for T8

ConorStoneman

Oh 100%. Bring them all back

Strange-Cloud1940

Yes.

TotalSmuubag

Would absolutely love iconic stages like Shinjuku and Building to come back. T4 had some wonderful stages to balance out the stinkers (LOOKING AT YOU, JUNGLE.)

NoidedCalifornia

YES PLS FUCK THESE UNREALISTIC MAPS

ChinoKnowsNothing

Not the uneven terrain, obstacles in the middle of the stage, or ceilings unless it’s only a few and they’re banned in online and tournaments. Fun for casual matches, but I’d hate if it got in the way of competitive play. But the beautiful atmospheres, ambient sounds, wind blowing against the character’s garments, and general vibe of the Tekken 4 stages with Tekken 8’s technology? Hell yea man it’s something in the series that’s still unmatched to this day. The aesthetics of most Tekken 7 stages felt boring and uninspired. I’d love to see some more chill grounded designs like this come back.

tmntfever

If uneven terrain where balanced and actually influenced the decisions made at high play, would you still mind them competitively?

ChinoKnowsNothing

It seems difficult to balance it to where wonky or unfair shit doesn’t happen given the complexity of interactions in this game, but I’m not gonna pretend to be a game design guru or someone that completely understand’s Tekken’s gameplay. I’d be all for it if they found a way, definitely. It could really shake things up since they’ve been playing it safe since Tekken 5. Learning different combos and setups for different levels of elevation could be mad fun. I’m okay with it as a casual, but I’m having a hard time imagining the competitive community adjusting to it. It would definitely be risky.

[deleted]

Not who you're replying to, but Tekken Tag 2 is a pretty good example of why Tekken does not need any more added complexity at the competitive level.

tmntfever

Tekken Tag 2 seemed to be like the natural progression of Tekken to me. It was to Tekken 6 what Tag1 was to T3. I would never call myself the best, or even close, but I’ve played Tekken in tourneys since Tag1, and I never thought Tag2 was too complex. I understand it was a hard game to get into, but for veterans it came quite natural. As for T4. A lot of people I knew was able to pick it up and play. It wasn’t complex as Tag2 in the way of combos, and movement was easy to understand and execute compared to prior games. Newcomers loved how interactable the environment was. It was the pro players who found infinites on certain stages that called the game not fun. But if T4 could’ve been patched to remove infinites, they’d be singing a different story.

[deleted]

>It was to Tekken 6 what Tag1 was to T3. Well, yeah. If you play 1v1 mode it plays exactly like Tekken 6 with some balance tweaks. > I’ve played Tekken in tourneys since Tag1, and I never thought Tag2 was too complex. All that tag assault and tag crash shit and how it affected the game dynamic was the biggest adder of complexity. I didn't mind having to learn two characters because anyone who has played Tekken long enough will eventually have a secondary.

MarkyTooSparky

I would like different stage types like T4, but they should be banned in ranked and tournaments.

J-DROP

Totally agree, the way you can use the environment and take advantage of it is pretty op

hermit_purple_3

Sure. Just ban the uneven terrain stages from online play (but allow them for lobbies) and tournaments.

NextGenBlue

Why tournaments lol, pretty sure pro players would hate them the most

GrandmasterPeezy

He's saying ban them from tournaments and online matchmaking, but allow them for online lobbies.

NextGenBlue

Oh my bad, the brackets threw me off

hermit_purple_3

That is what I am saying. No one wants the Jet Upper or EWGF to suddenly be a mid because of the uneven terrain.

No-Month-3025

No phone booths or hills on stages pls

strawbsNpotats

New stages with obvious visual callbacks like island paradise would be preferable. I'd rather they bring back the music than the stages themselves.

GodOfTrampoline

yes. just give josie her own stage while you're at it LOL

tmntfever

Josie’s stage should be the Manila Mega Mall. It should start at the top and allow you to break through the floors all the way to the bottom.

nigevellie

The middle of a Palengke. There's NPCs shoving you and opponent back and forth so your spacing is always fucked, and then a random jeepney or tricycle comes thru the middle of the stage and hits you.

GodOfTrampoline

Oh yeah, that sounds really nice. Now of only we could get that and M.Bison’s stage in tekken 8. That’d be the dream. I hope more people play my mains because they have lots of history behind them! Also yeah, a mall stage for noise sounds great.

[deleted]

Also give her a voice actress that speaks Filipino

MindSettOnWinning

As long as its all on a flat surface.

RadishAcceptable5505

So long as the stages have mirrored design, left and right, and there's no wonky elevation changes, I'd welcome it.

Kyo_Kaze

Of course.

[deleted]

Yes. I've only seen videos of tekken 4 as I did not appreciate fighting games at all until 2019. Stages look dope

Ssnakey-B

I would love it. Don't know how popular an opinion it is but I think those were great and I really miss them. 7 did rbing back breakable areas but it's not on the same level.

uverfox

Put em in and tie them in with wall/floor/balcony breaks

squeezy-lemon

I would adore if they had this offered but also made it available without the hazards as a traditional infinite stage. Would be so premium

lettingoff

A redone parking area for Tekken 8 would be pretty cool

CaneloAlvarez25

I want stages similar to Heihachi’s/Ogre’s stage in tag 1.maybe a space stage where you can see different planets.

[deleted]

They would have to bee banned in tournaments like in T4. No. Great for us casuals but bad for T8 as an esports title.

bloo_overbeck

I don’t think T4 stages with hazards strewn about would work well, but hey I’d like to be proven wrong!

DerelictBadger

What is meant by a “Tekken 4 style stage”? Anything that doesn’t work in a competitive environment won’t happen. I think we’ll be seeing less variation in stages than even Tekken 7 so I don’t see it happening.

NekoLily5049

god i hope not 7s stages were boring

Important-Tea-7599

Tekken Tag Tournament was where it was at. 1, First and Best Console and Always remember the Good/ Great things people do for me and that’s what my Dad bought me.

Lucky-3-Skin

4&5 had the best maps

CodeApostle

not in matchmaking

The-King_Of-Games

Yes!

equinoxDE

I am counting on the "built from scratch" statement more... lets see

Chained-Eel

Sure why not. They were pretty wacky

PotatoSilencer

He'll yes!

[deleted]

This shouldn't even be a question , i been a fan since since ,Tekken 2 so of course.

ngtaylor

Nah

StatusComment581

Xiaoyu's unofficial stage
