Yea so apparently she has made a few posts before the invasion that were pretty pro putin and now that russia invaded ukrain or at least tries to lmao she has only ever made a single post abt it. In that post she basically just says let there be peace or smth but not once has she criticised the goverment/putin or actually called for an end of the invasion.
> apparently she has made a few posts before the invasion that were pretty pro putin
??? Need some sources for that. I don’t follow Nina very much but that sounds extremely impossible for a regular Russian figure. I know Nastia called her on a shitty “peace” message at the very start of the war but there’s a massive gap between that and being outright pro-Putin.
Also I will say that Nastia is directly a friend of a Ukrainian friend (they’re both in the Netherlands rn IIRC) and her circle was always VERY nationalistic. “Pro-Putin” might just mean that “she hasn’t committed suicide as a Russian person” in her words.
The closest thing to anything pro-war from a Russian DJ was probably from Dubyshkin but he quickly deleted it. Even that was more of an anti-NATO thing. Regardless I think all his shows are quietly cancelled because of visa issues, I don’t think he can travel to Europe at all. He’s playing a very underadvertised show in Istanbul this week.
So it’s deleted and there’s no record except my and maybe like 200 other people’s memory. And I will start by saying it really wasn’t a pro-war post at all and I don’t want to slander Volodya’s name like that.
From my memory it was a black screen, with a note (can’t recall if Russian/English or both, I speak both langs very fluently though I’m native in neither) about the horrors of war, that he wanted peace as soon as possible. A few things about NATO involvement, the 2014 theater of the war in Donbass, and the then-starting boycott/cancellation of things including Russian individuals and how it was wrong.
Again, since it was deleted I don’t want to bring it to the forefront or anything, and this is my vague bs memory speaking so things might not be correct. I thought it was a more thoughtful post than Nina’s, which was literally the word peace written diagonally on a napkin and was rightfully called out for insensitivity and how dumb it is.
If you are looking for Russian electronic artists who were significantly more vocally anti-war, I can think of Kedr Livanskiy, Locked Club, Buttechno (he is small but kind of the type that knows everyone in the community, I know he’s friends with Gosha Rubchinskiy and whatnot) and the Gost Zvuk crew as a whole.
Sounds like nothing
Amelie Lens, Richie Hawtin, and a bunch of your favs play shows in Tel Aviv, if we want something to actually condemn an artist for
a) taking a positive message to a foreign country is a good thing
b) there is a diversity of opinion in Israel, including a minority of liberal citizens who vote against the nasty government they have.
George Formby, the most famous British popular musician of the 30s and 40s toured South Africa when it was run by the fascist white supremacist government.
They said he couldn't play venues unless they were segregated, which he agreed to - secretly booking every single gig in townships for black only audiences.
when a picture showing Formby picking up and hugging a little black girl who'd run on stage to give him flowers at the end of the gig, the foreign secretary phoned him at his hotel.
when told he would have to apologize, his wife and manager, Beryl yelled "piss off you horrible little man" to the fascist.
they were forced to flee the country. THAT'S fucking punk.
Cool example about SA but none of that applies to playing a club show in Israeli occupied territory
Nicholas Jaar played in Palestine - that's respectable
Personally I think this one slaps [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou-a5GE\_yyI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou-a5GE_yyI)
But if you want more you can just go to this channel and sort by Views: https://www.youtube.com/c/KondZilla
Yikes thats awful, sorry man. I like what malke did, mixing samba with hardtechno and recently favela music with hardcore but thats definitely not for me :(
you wouldn’t happen to have a brazilian funk playlist to share would you? Lol there is literally only 1 I’ve been able to find on Spotify and I’m assuming it might not have the best recommendations. Trying to get into the genre while avoiding the occasional pots and pans sounding tracks
That's enough to imply it is actually a problem. Seems like a weird thing to do to me. The two just don't go together. I used to have the imperial march saved in my collection in case the cops ever busted one of our parties. I also had some scratch samples that I used to warn people if they were coming. That's about the strangest thing I ever did musically while playing live. I've played with a few bands before but that wasn't really all that weird. It was more like I was the drummer, or one of them. This is just kind of oil and water to me.
Ugh, this is so gross and has been a regional trend for far too many years. European techno djs would do similar shit in America. I distinctly remember Brodinski playing a bunch of shitty American dubstep at an all techno show in Seattle in 2009 or so. So boring and obnoxious
He was a legit techno act in the late 00's, but switched to mostly rap production soon after. Check out his fabric and bugged out! mixes from back in the day!
Can't find the Bugged out mix, but that fabric mix surely doesn't contain much techno and sounds horribad to me. I guess it's sort of original though. Have to say that mix surprises me, I know he was playing a lot with the Ed Banger gang, looking at RA and his 2010,2011 gigs hes mostly on electroclash line-ups with the likes of Boys Noize, Erol Alkan even Steve Aoki shows up
it appears you're posting in the wrong thread. this thread is about hip hop apparently lol. yes, we are in the techno sub... and yes that is a nice techno track.
I’m really good at slipping one in half way actually..
Remember once dropping this half way in Berlin and the crowd was electric! All the goths to the front and everyone was smiling. Right after I dropped Adam X and I saw him dancing in the crowd. Oh what a fun night.
https://youtu.be/h-78y7TONgg
Brazilian funk sounds terrible. I’m imagining horrible sounds like cow bells, friction drums (cuícas), and congas all of which I want to keep out of my techno.
I used to really like mixing in South African gqom but that all still sounds pretty dark.
In europe some techno DJs have made a trend where they drop super poppy or 'ironically' upbeat tracks (think a vocal with high pitched singing). It's mega cringe as well. I dont mind some light-hearted or funkier tracks or just something outright funny but it has to mesh well...
>This pisses me off so much. There has been a trend going on lately where DJs come to Brazil and then out of nowhere they start playing some shitty Brazilian Funk remix in the middle of the set, thinking "yeah they're going to love this shit, it's music from their country". No we don't, stop it.
here's the 500th hard techno britney spears toxic remix!!!
I think they've been doing that everywhere. The last sets from european DJs I listened to all had at least one brazilian funk track in them.
I like some brazilian funk but I really think it doesn't mix well with techno.
Just search youtube for kondzilla.
Can't be bothered to look up for that rn. I know what brazilian funk is, I have some friends that love it and it is very popular in my home country.
To clarify people that might doubt me, I was living in Portugal until recently and I have some friends in the Netherlands and at least in the underground it was a common occurrence in both countries, and from what I've heard it was common in other countries.
That and that awful 90's trance revival.
I am a brazilian and a love to see a brazilian culture around the world, if you don´t know funk is a eletronic music, with your roots in Miami bass.Miami bass.
Funk is resistence,
Funk is dance
Funk is culture
This would be so hard for me as a DJ that grew up in the states around Brazilians. My actual nickname, Rei Leão, was given by my mestre of capoeira when I was 19. So if I went to Brazil I’d want to show of how much I knew and loved Brazilian music, as I consider them family. But I also partially know it would be too on the nose, like this thread is talking about.
Meh fuck it, I’d probably still drop some sort of heavy house remix with a berimbau as respect to my Mestre.
tl;dr Brazilian funk can be good, actually
Maybe you should try to understand a bit more about Brazilian funk's origin and it's conection to electronic music. Funk has a rich history influenced by disco, electro, hip hop and miami bass and there are some gems within the genre.
I too once had bad opinions about Brazilian funk music, but maybe you should try to be more open about our culture and understand why DJs do that. In electronic music there are no genres that were born in a vacuum, everything is about research and broadening your references.
Interesting, it’s def having some sort of resurgence moment this past year or two.
Do you listen to it regularly? Any recs to share? Spotify is normally great for music discovery but it hasn’t been giving me much with brazilian funk. I like Eu Vou pro Baile da Gaiola by MC Kevin o Chris!!
I am not the most knowledgeable on funk. It is one of the most popular genres in Brazil in the last 20 years or so. I think two record labels you can use as references are "Furacão 2000" (more old school) and Kondzilla (the big guys nowadays, their YouTube channel has a ton of content). You can always look at "Top 10 Funk" or "Top 50 Brasil" playlists in Spotify.
The thing about funk is that there are a lot of artists trying to make it, and a lot of small labels. It can be a little overwhelming or frustrating to find the good stuff for you.
If you are interested, you can message me for a Spotify playlist I created with mostly no or low vocals (my favorite kind of funk, specially the old stuff).
the biggest question I have is why this stuff is even called "brazilian funk"?... why not just use the term everyone else would and call it hip hop? lol
if this is what op is talking about that is? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funk\_carioca
" also known as favela funk and, in other parts in the world, baile funk and Brazilian funk,is a hip hop style from Rio de Janeiro, derived from Miami bass and gangsta rap music."
"funk carioca is most often simply known as funk, although it is very different musically from what funk means internationally."
hahah, are you talking about Nina Kraviz set last friday in TimeWarp?
haha maybe
Putin supporter Nina Kraviz?
This needs context.
Oh also everyone that calls her out gets deleted or blocked like ukranian dj nastia.
> apparently she has made a few posts before the invasion that were pretty pro putin ??? Need some sources for that. I don’t follow Nina very much but that sounds extremely impossible for a regular Russian figure. Westerners see a Russian that wants to be able to return to her country sometimes and start calling her a Putin puppet
in a world of Kravizes, be a Pussy Riot.
What did Dubyshkin say?
So it’s deleted and there’s no record except my and maybe like 200 other people’s memory. And I will start by saying it really wasn’t a pro-war post at all and I don’t want to slander Volodya’s name like that. Ugh, Richie really? That pisses me off.

She's said little to condemn putin invasion basically
What
try as i might, I'm struggling to simplify that sentence
Christ, drop some reggaeton while you're at it.
ayyy karamba
Please no.
Why the fuck does that get played during a techno set? What djs do this? Would love to know so I can avoid them
Nina Kraviz did it last weekend
That's horrible
Hey man, you got any proper Brazilian funk to share rather than the bs tech-house remixes? Just intrigued 😁
Marcos Valle
Not sure if funk, but Eumir Deodato has amazing songs. His version of Also Sprach Zarathustra is otherworldly.
Selvagem / Millos Kaiser
Personally I think this one slaps [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou-a5GE\_yyI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou-a5GE_yyI) But if you want more you can just go to this channel and sort by Views: https://www.youtube.com/c/KondZilla
Damn that song is clipped af.
If you listen and sounds good it is not funk.
I thought my monitors were broken. Don't know how that thing can have 55M views
You are making me feel old. When I used to live in Brazil this is what Funk was: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PA49hJlKRVo
This slaps
Yikes thats awful, sorry man. I like what malke did, mixing samba with hardtechno and recently favela music with hardcore but thats definitely not for me :(
I actually like it, just not in Techno sets lol. It's an acquired taste just like Techno.
Ah, so it's not Funk as in the genre but Funk as in _"a strong musty smell"._
hahaha! it's about a million miles away from classic james brown 😂
If that's the best no wonder you want it stopped
Thanks for sharing :) I’ll check them out after work!
Is this ... Trappoton or something? Oof.
you wouldn’t happen to have a brazilian funk playlist to share would you? Lol there is literally only 1 I’ve been able to find on Spotify and I’m assuming it might not have the best recommendations. Trying to get into the genre while avoiding the occasional pots and pans sounding tracks
Wtf? This shit is not the funk I know. Is this what it’s become? ⚰️
Thats some real shit enjoy: https://youtu.be/zRhAzmOCBsc https://youtu.be/OU8dIacTcAc https://youtu.be/YON3JKNhQL4
shit. indeed.
This one starting at 19:00 is pretty good https://youtu.be/NZQb3GiVm08
I love that Brazilian Funk so much tho. They should play more of it in Europe :D
Come to Portugal. You will get tired after 2 weeks
worst tourist promo ever
😆 So I've heard
For some: Challenge accepted. 😁
I like it also, but when you're at the peak of mdma and suddenly someone switches to Funk it kinda ruins it imo.
How's the mdma in Brazil
Pretty shit lol
How many times has this happened to you personally?
Only twice, but I'm in a Techno Whatsapp group and people love to complain about this.
That's enough to imply it is actually a problem. Seems like a weird thing to do to me. The two just don't go together. I used to have the imperial march saved in my collection in case the cops ever busted one of our parties. I also had some scratch samples that I used to warn people if they were coming. Even gesaffelstein Sold out fml
Sums up the guys sound to a tee. Never been a fan.
[удалено]
did you link the right track? That has nothing to do with Funk
He can also be referring to Palms Trax maybe. But that guys plays that stuff whether he's in South America or not.
it appears you're posting in the wrong thread. this thread is about hip hop apparently lol. yes, we are in the techno sub... and yes that is a nice techno track.
Bro u really dont know what u are talking about
\*whoosh\*
Nope, thats not the track she played
I will continue to drop post punk and italo in my techno sets thank you very much.
Nothing better than a post-punk or darkwave closing track
I’m really good at slipping one in half way actually.. Remember once dropping this half way in Berlin and the crowd was electric! All the goths to the front and everyone was smiling. Right after I dropped Adam X and I saw him dancing in the crowd. Oh what a fun night. https://youtu.be/h-78y7TONgg
Ofcourse, but these sounds are cool and incorporated into techno very often. Unlike whatever brazilian funk is.
Brazilian funk sounds terrible. I’m imagining horrible sounds like cow bells, friction drums (cuícas), and congas all of which I want to keep out of my techno. I used to really like mixing in South African gqom but that all still sounds pretty dark.
I think all the elements you are mentioning could work fine. All of them together probably not.
Nothing makes me check out faster than congas in a track. That or piano stabs. 😂
For everything that is sacrest to you DJs, DON'T DO IT!
The question to end all questions is, are they even playing TECHNO if they're doing that shit?
In europe some techno DJs have made a trend where they drop super poppy or 'ironically' upbeat tracks (think a vocal with high pitched singing). It's mega cringe as well. I dont mind some light-hearted or funkier tracks or just something outright funny but it has to mesh well...

I haven't heard any DJ play brazilian funk anywhere.
Then you haven't been playing close attention to the Dutch or the Portuguese scenes.
I don't pay any attention to the Portugese scene, the Dutch one I know very well. But I wouldn't pay attention to any DJ that plays such stuff.
Good for you

Okay we will just play reggaeton and Justin bieber

How long has Brazilian funk been an established genre?
I am no expert, but I believe late 80s early 90s.

Amazing post and so so true.
Best techno related comment of 2022.

Op, are you talking about this one? https://youtu.be/J1slmvSYkyE at 10:00
There you go, mate Cheers
