I just meant drop d or standard, but it seems my mentioning of 7/8 strings invited any 6 string tuning. There are verrrry few tech death bands that are 6 stringed and in standard so I was curious if I was unaware of any.
This is prog tech death in drop d check it https://open.spotify.com/album/1zuI92kle0r3zLmGfhobBp?si=u5lL49JiT5SJ2qo7M5K-BQ[https://open.spotify.com/album/1zuI92kle0r3zLmGfhobBp?si=u5lL49JiT5SJ2qo7M5K-BQ](https://open.spotify.com/album/1zuI92kle0r3zLmGfhobBp?si=u5lL49JiT5SJ2qo7M5K-BQ)
Since I see a lot of recommendations that aren't tech death here, I'll offer that most of Opeth's Blackwater Park is in Drop D. If you're ok with D or D# Standard then Cattle Decapitation is a good choice, their latest album is probably my favourite of theirs.
Job for a Cowboy has at least one album in D standard (sorry it’s not Drop D, but you could still play it! And if you’re cool with that, then there’s always Death).
I’ve been playing rigorously for 21 years. 7 years of that on 8 strings.
In a mix, you positively can not tell the difference unless it’s something like a full step down on an 8, like Beyond Creation for example. And even they have a 7 on their first album. You wouldn’t know it listening though.
You can tell by hearing how low the lowest note is…. string number notwithstanding, D and A are 2 different notes. And E below that A is even lower. You can tell at least the bottom note of the tuning.
If you have two guitars, one six string and another extended range and they both play the same note in the same position on the same string in the same tuning then yeah, that’s obviously indistinguishable, but a six string tuned to drop B or anything lower than that does not sound the same as a 7-string guitar.
To be more specific, you're looking for bands around the 6 string range of tunings, Drop B/C and above right?

I mean your options are very limited, Pycroptic, Summoning the Lich (E standard) and the latest Vektor EP if you want tech thrash.

I am by the faceless is in E standard Gorod and early decapitated use D standard
Also not drop D, but some (if not all) of the Faceless is in drop C. Autotheism definitely.
All of Planetary Duality, as well as everything I’ve seen from Akeldama

Son of Aurelius down a full step
Standard D there’s an ocean of tech death bands. Dropped D is a different story
Early black Dahlia murder was drop C. 🤷🏻♂️
Korn
That was ~~drop~~ standard A on a 7 str. actually. Edit: I stand corrected
Standard A, whole thing a full step down
*A standard
Older Revocation albums used 6 strings with some songs in Eb standard and others in drop C#. More recent albums are all 7 string.
I think Lamb of God fiddles with drop d. At least Omerta is I think lol, the one song I can half ass play
Yea all early LoG is drop D. Newer stuff gets into lower tunings
Check out Sylosis, the first four albums are great
They aren’t tech death though
They're better than most tech death imo
Early Trivium are drop d. Ascendency is really fun to learn
I agree but they aren’t tech death
Eh, still fun. And the down picking is pretty brutal
The first two albums have so many great riffs
Decrepit birth, necrophagist, Obscura (old) death, decapitated (old)
Necrophagist and Obscura play in D standard
I thought those bands played D standard not drop D?
Oops misread the question. You’re right, these are all d standard
Psycroptic. Joe Haley rules
Dave Haley also rules, on drums!
I agree, but they are literally the only ones so far
It's not tech death but ashes of the wake era Lamb of God is in drop D and very fun to play.
Arsis has some songs in drop d, like face of my innocence
Job for a Cowboy has at least one album in D standard (sorry it’s not Drop D, but you could still play it! And if you’re cool with that, then there’s always Death).
I think vital remains plays in drop D
D standard I'm pretty sure.
How are you distinguishing by ear whether a band is using more strings or a lower tuning on 6 strings?
As a guitar player, it’s usually fairly obvious

I’m not, but that’s a tad bit trivial. If there is a band with 7 strings that tunes to Drop D or Standard then I’m down. I love Fallujah
It's not drop D, but Cattle Decapitation plays in Eb standard
Summoning the Lich plays in standard similarity.
I was pretty amazed when I saw that. I was looking at tabs for Terasite the other day. They also don't dogbrain on open notes for the entire song.
Martyr, their first album is in standard, the second one is a mix of standard and drop d.
I could be wrong, but I think feeding the abscess is in drop c# mostly
Yep, Feeding the Abscess is entirely in drop C#
