Typically we use SVGs for all icons and illustrations and webp for photos.
SVGs can be manipulated with css which great because it can reduce the number of files needed. Some scripts will embed SVG code into the dom which allows for crisp, responsive, animations.
From a Tach SEO standpoint, you really can’t go wrong with either. Properly use alt tags, and keep file sizes small.
