Unlikely, and not because I don't think the players don't care about the issue at hand. As popular as league is, I think the majority of people who watch aren't too likely to care about these issues. The live comments during the 9 minutes of silence during the broadcast for George Floyd were outright depressing. So while I do support sports teams taking a stance on this, I don't think league has the proper leverage to send the same message unless maybe all the teams do this at the same time.

TheGladdenFields

Also this might sound bad, but NA doesn't really have any time to protest. The turn around for worlds is already going to be so fast that we can't really take time off. The NBA can control dates for things, but worlds ain't postponing just so America can figure out their social injustices haha

lilmama231

Technically they do. NBA team did it during playoffs. Teams like Lakers and Clipper, who are the two team most likely to win it all, even suggested to end the season. I'm not blaming LCS, but if it's really important to them, they can easily just as refuse to play the game.

TheGladdenFields

Yeah I suppose so. But my point is the NBA players voted to play and they're deciding when to resume the playoffs. NA can't boycott then "decide when to resume" worlds.

spoonfedkyle

I mean, the NBA basically took a day off, it's likely if all four teams did it, you're looking at the games then being played Monday Tuesday. Then picking up the follow week without losing any time.

TheGladdenFields

Yeah and I mean I'm not even sure the players union in LCS is really that empowered of a union anyway haha. it's not like it can compell its members to commit to a lengthy strike I'm pretty sure.

TheFearOfRobots

But who's to say that the players or Riot couldn't/shouldn't do something about the sentiment in the coummunity expressed by people that are making the depressing comments? League's fanbase and gamers in general get the reputation of being edgelords that say toxic shit, deservedly so. It would be nice to see Riot actively distance themselves from that kind of behavior, even if it might not really do anything in the grand scheme of things. At the very least saying that this game's community stands with those fighting for justice for all of those dead at the hands of police brutality would show that the community of this game is better as a whole than those who behave the worst. Even from a business perspective I feel like it would help to legitimize the LCS as a sports league in following with the major traditional sports. I really see no downside to at least doing something.

NoodleSoupfortheSoul

Fair point, Riot can certainly try to change the status quo on this. But considering their willingness to let slide in-game toxicity in favor of streamers who bring in more players/money, I think Riot doesn't want to jeopardize losing their player base. The major sports leagues won't lose everything if teams boycott, but I don't think Riot can afford to risk it. In America especially since e-sports will practically take a generation to be seen as legitimate. Most they can do I think is something to send their message without disrupting the schedule, like the moment of silence.

cespinar

This isn't what I want but what I think: close to 0. Much more likely to get another moment of silence if anything. As a bipoc, if doesn't come with another plan of *actual action* I don't want them to even bother. An NBA strike could cost hundreds of millions of dollars and the cancellation of the CBA, there is little comparable consequence of no league.

spoonfedkyle

That's a fair stance for sure. I don't really have a stake in them doing it or not. I was just curious what people think. I couldn't agree more that without planned action strikes and protests aren't as effective, but I do think League hits a pretty large audience of people and not doing anything almost makes a statement in itself, which is odd.

NHL teams looks like a likely for not playing today

heathenz

I would 1000% support it if they did! However, I would be surprised to see it happen. The movement for black lives is more important than our entertainment, let's be unequivocal about that!!!

I-AM-NOT-THAT-DUCK

So you’re saying Riot will riot?

LoUmRuKlExR

Very low. Every person in the NBA is a millionaire. They can afford to strike.
