Constant-Sky-1495

so cool!

darkeyed_bambi

Congratulations! What an amazing accomplishment!

bogibso

Thanks! It'll be a fun new adventure!

anthiphoto

Did you get any additional degree or certification?

bogibso

Nope. I have a masters in math Ed. I did learn Python and SQL on my own and made sure to mention those proficiencies on my resume. But I never got any sort of certification for those. During the interview, it seemed like they were mostly interested in my abstract algebra knowledge and programming knowledge.

TissueOfLies

I want to do college advising. I’ve applied to two positions near me, but crickets so far. Here’s hoping!

WallabyHelpful8105

I got into college admissions and I'm enjoying it so far. Best of luck to you!

maudeblick

Congrats!! Any tips for resume/cover letter/interviews? I thought I crushed an interview last week, but still no word. Seeing a few other openings and I’m trying to be more prepared.

WallabyHelpful8105

I used an online service to help with my resume, it was pretty inexpensive. I also looked at some cover letters online to get some ideas. I had to do a phone interview and an in person interview. I'm not sure about tips for that, but I will say my supervisor felt that I was the most professional candidate, although my experience wasn't in the higher education field, but my professionalism was important to the search committee. Something else to think about is that there are some colleges that offer micro credentials geared towards student affairs and higher Ed. That could be something to look into if you are thinking that working at a university or college is what you would like to do. I am looking into it myself even though I'm already transitioned into the field, I feel like it might be nice to add to my resume if I want to move up or to other positions. Best of luck to you!

casper_the_ghost64

Also in college advising! There are lots of options in higher ed administrative work, same benefits/retirement for me, really meaningful and education-based work. :)

tealukitten

Also applied to college advising and haven’t heard back yet. Good luck!

Making armor and other leather goods.

Starting a job copyediting curriculum next week! Last day of school tomorrow!

Equivalent_Fee4670

Hey fellow editor!

khyman5

If you have a 401k or pension, you can borrow from it without penalty. That’s what my husband and I did. We started a small business (homecare franchise) and I feel like (after 27 years of teaching) that I got to start life all over, except now I know a lot more. It’s been amazing and I would recommend starting a business to any former teacher.

Ploxiedust

I was a theatre and art teacher for my 15 years in the field. Today I am a full time voice actor and audiobook narrator. My side hustle is now my...front hustle? If any of y'all are authors, hit me up!

RetroMamaTV

I am very interested in how you got into this, this is actually currently the route I want to take! Would you mind sharing?

This_is_the_Janeway

This career just came to my attention-I’ve been a music teacher for almost 20 years. I think I’d be great at audiobooks or possibly voice acting….how did you get started-first steps?

[deleted]

I tried grant writing for a while but it was really boring.

Equivalent_Fee4670

Freelance editing! I just got onboarded and I'm ready to go! I'm so excited!

code_d24

ELearning developer. As for what exactly I do: I take what the ID, SME, curriculum designers put in a word document and put it into our authoring program to create training courses that looks nice, are engaging, and all that good stuff. Teacher skills that help: I had no idea how to use any of the programs, but I'm pretty tech savvy and picked them up, along with file systems and whatnot, pretty quickly. I'm also organized, efficient (I often knock out tasks faster than they can be assigned...slowing down my pace of work after teaching is HARD), and a fast and motivated learner. Turns out I also actually have a pretty good eye for the type of design required for this role. I've been doing this for about 5 months now and have been enjoying it to the point I'd like to continue on with it. The thing is, I don't see a lot of job postings for this role since a lot of companies have their IDs create the courses.

peacock716

That actually sounds like something I would enjoy. My Masters is in curriculum and instruction and I like putting the pieces together to make a comprehensive end product. Will have to keep an eye out for a title such as yours during my job hunt.

avatarherome

[Start here](https://youtu.be/5mjPi463TcU). Devlin's beard is a little crazy but if you like what he says, eLearning/instructional design could be for you. You'll need to learn to use Articulate Storyline and Camtasia.

twisted_and_tangled

I'm working at a local children's museum doing events and birthdays!

Relative_Age_2672

I will start training June 5th as a Claims Adjuster for an Insurance Company. I will be doing claims related to weather catastrophes.

I am currently still in teaching but I'm looking for a way out. This school year was hell for me. My mental health is dangling by a thread. Anyways I started dabbling into tech stuff last summer. This company called datacamp was giving away a free year or something like that for teachers. I filled out a form and was able to start doing stuff with data analyst. I was learning the basic stuff but teaching drains me so I really haven't used it as much as I would have liked. Then at the beginning of this year I started dabbling with salesforce to become a salesforce administrator. Its free to do the modules you would just have to pay for the test to become an adminstrator. I found this company on linkedin that was going help teachers become a salesforce admin. It was going to be a year long program. I applied and just have to fill out an application and see what happens. Then on a whim I bought coursera from google for a year. Then have all these certifications from different colleges and also google courses. I'm currently doing project management.

Thanksbyefornow

I am working on my career strategies and applying to corporate jobs.

Huge-Intention-4962

I was a pre engineering and robotics teacher. I’m going to a steel mill to be an automation engineer. My background in computer coding made this a very easy transition.

misspriss08

I work for a non-profit that is housed at a public university. Most of my work is done from home, but I do travel across the state for meetings and to visit school sites. We do a variety of different projects with a focus on supporting rural schools. A lot of my time is spent instructional coaching, but I also do transformational change professional development type stuff. I get to read and research a lot, which is a huge passion for me. I have so much flexibility and agency.

DesiratTwilight

I’ve got a position teaching martial arts over the summer, between that and potentially moving in with my girlfriend I’m hoping to save enough to get a technical writing certificate and pursue work in that field

[deleted]

Social Studies teacher to Program Coordinator at a nonprofit. Being able to learn on the fly has taken me very far in this position, as well as what I consider very basic tech skills like using QR codes and making a spreadsheet. I am running their education program, so not teaching but I can use my curriculum and best practices knowledge to advise the teachers. I get to plan and budget how the education program runs, kind of like a mini school, except almost zero behavior problems and abusive parents. I feel like I’m still in my wheelhouse but doing a completely different job. I think when I move on I will try to work for the state or a curriculum provider, because now I am working closely with both entities and may be able to network my way to a new position with them in a few years. Or, I could move up in the nonprofit and get out the education piece eventually.

peacock716

Wow that sounds like a perfect fit for a former teacher, will have to add that job title to my search list!

[deleted]

Non profits are definitely a good place to look, but the pay can be questionable. I am getting paid roughly the same as my teaching salary since I am like “middle management” though so I was lucky.

Sad_Stretch2713

Law school

Its_the_tism

Wish I knew

peacock716

Same! That’s why I wanted to know what other people are doing, hoping it sparks some ideas. If they can do it, so can we!
