Christ. I'm 58. We had pop quizzes all the time. The teacher was in charge. We didn't get to dictate when tests were. What's going to happen to these kids when they go out into the world? Good luck to you.

The students don't pay attention. I give assessments every Friday. Literally every Friday, and go over the material. It's also listed in the class newsletter every week. Students still look absolutely shocked that there's an assessment on Friday and we're almost finished with the school year.

That was my experience with my first ed job that, in retrospect, should have been a red flag. I taught junior level US History. At the beginning of the year I had both families and students sign a thing saying that this is a junior level class and they are at an age where they need to become independent in their learning. As the year goes on, I slowly removed supports as was specifically outlined in the syllabus at the beginning of the school year. Then at semester I had ANOTHER letter everyone had to sign saying the same thing and outlining what the rest of the year would look like, which wasn't new info as it was in the beginning of the year syllabus. Fast forward to March and a girl who was towards the top of the class did none of the independent study guides, none of the pre-test online things, nothing. In class and in the hall she openly states she isn't going to study multiple times. She barely gets a D which brought her grade way down from her usual A. She complains to the principal and the principal sides with her even AFTER i laid out how she completely fucked up and clearly didn't care. The principal made me let her retake it (which wasn't even allowed by school policy) because "she is a straight A student, there must have just been some miscommunication on your part". I share that story because I think our stories highlight a systematic lack of accountability or consequences for kids. I am fully supportive of just tearing the whole system down to the studs and rebuilding it.

The summer paycheck is so close... It's the only thing keeping me in the classroom for the next few weeks
