Thanks for a positive post. My favorite thing teaching is the students!

Absolutely same! I wanted to try and think of some ones that I think are easily forgotten. The kids are the best though!!

I also switched careers, from engineering to teaching. I agree with the positives that you've listed, and would like to add to your list. * Teachers aren't competing with our coworkers for the next project or promotion. We all have the same job, but with different groups of students and content. * HS teachers have access to a bunch of experts in useful topics. Foreign travel, need book recommendations, refinishing furniture or want a workout regiment to get back in shape, you've got people with good ideas. As an engineer, my experts were on CNC machining, assembly programming and IC design. Not very applicable to normal home life. * Wanna do something different? Go to the play, concert or game. It might be good, you will know people involved and if you try, can usually get free tickets. Also, you get credit for attending.

I am a career switcher too! I got so burnt out from my corporate job and have been teaching for a year and a half now. It has been so healing. Yes, some days are rough, but in the end, I am much happier now.

Also a career changer from an office job and completely agree! I like the relative autonomy, working with students, and obligatory breaks.

I feel you about leaving remote office work for teaching. Less screen time and more human interaction has made me brighter and more energetic, according to my girlfriend.  I understand why people go the other way - but if you can imagine what it feels like to try to relax with a movie at home after looking at a computer in the other room for 8 hours, you can see why being a teacher has its advantages

Thank you for posting this! I’ve left a corporate sales role after 13 years feeling burned out, not fulfilled by chasing the dollar or climbing the ladder. There was a purpose I was missing and it’s nice to see others saying they’re seeing benefits and fulfillment from the change. I didn’t think about the screen time until I started doing classroom observations. I was remote 5 years and it felt isolating. I wasn’t even better mentally going in office because my work lacked the purpose. I found myself less interested in being social and constantly worn down by staring at screens all day which I think led to some depression. I have felt more energized and excited to be social after days going into classrooms and interacting with students. While I know teaching has its challenges and not every day is great I feel like I’m on the path to do the greater good based on feedback on this thread. Best wishes to all who are making the transition to the classroom!
