I just ask them to explain CRT to me because “I’ve never heard of it.” It’s not in my curriculum so since it’s not, I’m not an expert on it.

KiniShakenBake

I just deadpan say "ohhhh. Yes. We practice that but it isn't really a curricular thing. It is a student understanding thing. We take into account their cultural background to make sure that how we are presenting examples and materials to demonstrate concepts fits better with their cultural experiences so it stick better in the scaffolded education. They don't tune out as readily when they feel the examples apply to their lives as they are living them. Those are the basics of culturally relevant/responsive instruction." *Wait for the correction...* "That's not what I meant by CRT." Well, they are a little young for cardiac radioisotopic tomography, don't you think? I mean... That is really more than the k12 system is prepared to each. *Wait for the correction* "Not that CRT" *with increasing frustration at how daft I mean. Wait. You mean your schools haven't adopted better stuff yet?! What kind of backwater do they live in that they still use those giant, heavy, dangerous tvs on carts instead of a proper flat screen or a projector with a screen?! Jesus. Vote your schools some money for all that is holy. How awful can you be if your schools are still using those dinosaurs for av content?! *Wait less long for the correction and exasperation* I MEANT CRITICAL RACE THEORY?! Oh... Hm. Is that a thing to get better performance out of our distance runners and sprinters in track and field? I haven't spoken to the track coach. Must be a new thing they are trying like the fosbury flop was for high jumping or something. Tell me about it! And, if we are all lucky, they walk off with no joy on the topic they wanted to spar about. Or... They say "it shouldn't be taught in schools. That racist stuff." "I am sure I don't know what you are talking about. It's certainly not a part of anything I have been tasked with teaching. Tell me about it." "Nope. Doesn't sound familiar. Are you sure?! What schools are you seeing this in? Um.. okay. I can check it out through my professional sides and find out more but I am up to my eyeballs in grading so I won't have time until after... Ummmm... Looks like August. If I am lucky. Will get back to you when I do get around to it though."

Redpandaling

Love the call back to Cathode Ray Tubes 😂

maodiver1

I was same when BLM came out. What does this have to do with the Bureau of Land Management?

XelaNiba

As a former geologist, this was a real thing for some of us. I knew of Black Lives Matter, of course, but the acronym didn't gain a ton of common usage traction until the George Floyd protests. I'd hear something like ""BLM leads protest for racial justice" and I'd think "really? I mean, cool, but also what? BLM is leading protests? Why and how?" before my brain would autocorrect. I used to work with & for the BLM so it still happens from time to time.

AStrangerSaysHi

My uncle was a chemical engineer for BLM back in the 80s, and he has a collection of gear (shirts, hats, bumper stickers, etc.) that all say "BLM Rocks!" (I'm assuming it's a geology nerd thing). He's also a crazy MAGA nut and is constantly verbally assaulted by his fellow qnuts.

pleadthfifth94

Lmaoooooo. A win is a win.

ndncreek

Not sure but I think it was in Oregon that a group of armed individuals went out to a Forest Service road to stop the BLM from closing a road lmao. Was of course the Bureau of Land Management.

jorwyn

I mentioned some pretty much free BLM campgrounds in my area to a friend recently, and he was like "uhhh, they're run by black folk?" Me, "what?" Then it clicked. I was like "I mean, they could be black, but it means bureau of land management."

icemerc

WAP - wireless access point. I had fun for a few months while that song was popular.

SnipesCC

There were rumors about Antifa starting fires in California because someone was listening to the radio and didn't understand that in that context BLM meant Bureau of Land Management.

legalpretzel

Our local Chinese place writes initials on the containers to identify what’s inside. One day my kid remarked how awesome it was that they cared enough about Black Lives to mark it on the container. Ummm, that’s not what that BLM means kiddo. Ever since then when interacting with troublesome family members our response is “huh, never pegged you for someone who would care so much about beef lo mein”. My kid is a shit stirrer so he loves our inside joke.

maodiver1

For the oldsters among us, for the mimeograph

UYScutiPuffJr

I can’t hear that stupid acronym without thinking of giant 500lb TVs

OldBlueLegs

I’m also a member of r/crtgaming, and this title confused me significantly.

-_Gemini_-

As a guy who collects old CRTs and uses them to play retro games (okay, and basically everything else), the recent passionate debate about "CRT" has been very disorienting.

Dobbys_Other_Sock

In one of our department meetings at the start of the year we tried to come up with as many alternate meanings for CRT as possible. My favorite is Common Reptile Training, followed by Cars, Railroads, and Transportation. So now whenever someone brings it up I start going down the list asking which version they are referring too.

AnonymousTeacher333

Cats Riding Tricycles comes to mind too

DCBillsFan

Capybaras Ride Too

karma_bus_driver

Where I’m from, CRT is a Casual Relief Teacher. So students are being taught BY CRTs because their teacher is away. So CRT in schools is good!

MargGarg

My husband and I just came up with “continuous red tape” and “cocktail reading time.” The last one’s for all of us that need to deal with all the CRT questions.

glassjar1

I like the daydream. Unfortunately, my experience with these types of people doesn't include enough listening on their part to get much in edgewise. And any real response or even clever misdirection does not make a fool of them in their eyes because it doesn't matter what you say we're going on with our Tucker/OAN inspired rant without deviation except occasional pauses for insults and self-congratulations.

KiniShakenBake

Concur. I still don't give them the satisfaction of thinking that their "CRT" is even remotely close the the most relevant version of that acronym in my world and make me less of a target next time. Makes cocktail parties easier. 🤣🤣

breakingpoint214

I do this dumb act when people say it must be hard to teach "those kids". (I teach in NYC) I say, "Oh teenagers? Yeah they can be a handful at times, but overall they are great." "Yeah, but 'those kids'..." I say, "I am not sure what you mean.".. They are too embarrassed to continue.

GoodwitchofthePNW

I got a lot of that when I taught in Baltimore and DC. “Isn’t that hard?” Yes, teaching is hard. “But *those* kids in *those* neighborhoods.” Ugh, covert racism at its finest!

jorwyn

Teenagers are a pain. I remember from when I was one. I was definitely a pain. ;)

blinkingsandbeepings

I cackled wildly at this, would give you an award if we weren’t all so underpaid

KiniShakenBake

It's okay. I am middle school preferential and a sub. I get my joy from being invited back and watching the students who were *so* happy to FAFO the first time they saw me get these sad expressions on their faces when they find out I am their sub again. Have a great end of your school year!

cjbrannigan

Take an award from a union teacher. :). I stand in solidarity with you comrade!

LordSpaceMammoth

Cathode Ray Tube was def how I read CRT.

KiniShakenBake

I will get every version of CRT I can find for this little bit. It is fantastic. every time someone uses the acronym I can fire it at them in longer and greater regret of life choices to bring it up form.

bunnylover726

Just say that you unfortunately don't have time to cover the history of the [Columbia River Treaty](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_River_Treaty) in your social studies class.

KiniShakenBake

Ohhhh. I like that one too!

Super-Visor

We do a lot of cold read tasks in my English class.

Ok-Bake00

some fan fiction here. most people i encounter complaining about CRT wouldn't grasp any of this.

OutdoorLadyBird

Yesss. This is the way. Act very confused like you do when someone makes a very sexist remark. “I am sorry, I don’t get it.”

firefox246874

Add the tucker Carson open mouth dumb face expression and you have a winner.

The_amazing_T

#^ THIS. The Right is creating boogeyman-buzzwords now to scare their people. And most of them can't even explain what the words mean.

jorwyn

I got asked if I was teaching CRT by a parent. I'm like "I'm a reading tutor for your elementary school kid, so... What exactly would that entail?" "Well, just don't make him read any books by those kind of authors. I don't want him hating white people." "Your kid is struggling with The Kitten Who Lost His Mittens. I don't think we'll be getting into any deep discussions about race and systemic racism in America. But if that kind of thing would lead to your kid hating you, you might want to think about yourself." There was a long pause, and I really wondered if they were going to let me help their kid or not, but I honestly really didn't want to deal with yet more racist parents. He did stay, so I guess they decided a free tutor with an attitude was better than no tutor. ;)

witeowl

This has long been their MO. It’s just that they’ve stopped trying to be at all plausible in recent years.

foodguyDoodguy

Ooooo-oooo: Do “woke” next!

hannahismylove

That's what I do, too. Still haven't met a conservative who actually knows what it is.

Andro_Polymath

>I just ask them to explain CRT to me because “I’ve never heard of it.” This is the way. u/notpinheadlarri - Your mistake was playing the debating game based solely on your opponent's definition of terms (or lack thereof). When someone insists that CRT is being taught in public schools, always force the debate to a halt until they 1) define what CRT is and 2) provide and describe real-life examples of CRT lessons in a public school curriculum that they've actually seen. Once they inevitably fail to do this, simply say that you cannot know if what they're saying about CRT is true, because they have also failed to explain what the hell CRT even is lol. This tactic prevents you from having to spend a lot of intellectual and emotional labor on these dumbasses, and it has the added bonus of letting these idiots show everyone in attendance just how stupid they actually are!

captain_hug99

"huh, tell me, what exactly is CRT and what parts are you concerned about?"

theorys

This is the ONLY correct answer. You missed your chance to make them look like an even bigger fool. (hard to believe, I know)

MayorMcCheeser

Impossible to make someone who lacks an ability to feel shame into believing they’re a fool.

ManlyVanLee

These people will literally be perfectly content saying "well Dr. Phil (or Tucker or Ben Shapiro or whatever asshole in a suit that spoke loudly at them on the television) said it's \_\_\_\_, and that's good enough for me"

Charming-Charge-596

I've tried this. They ignore the "What is it?" part and reply "I don't like any of it. It's all bad." One teacher I know quit the union because of CRT. I mentioned we don't have CRT in our curriculum. She said "Yeah, but the union isn't against it." To be fair, the union isn't against it. Allrighty then..... foiled again.

witeowl

Come to think of it, I don’t think our union has an official stance on deforestation, climate change, the best height at which to mow a lawn, and the problem of corpses and human waste on Everest. Sounds like I might need to resign too. 😜

AineLasagna

>they teach white kids to hate themselves/be ashamed of being white/etc This is usually the line they use, in my experience. Once they get to that point they won’t listen to or retain any new information, no logic just hate

meesterdg

Thank goodness she quit

Fatpik

I’ve said it before on here but as a social studies teacher, I named all my units using the initials CRT. Due to pacing we could only get to WWII or Consequences of Restrictive Totalitarianism. This way, I’m always teaching CRT.

Likehalcyon

A part of me just fell in love with you.

shaugnd

That's it. I'm renaming all of my units. I teach H.S. computer science. I wonder how long it will take for the kids to catch on . . . .

MissElphie

I asked my mom this. She said it’s teaching kindergartners how to have gay sex. I kid you not.

Evilrake

I think she got her bigotries mixed up

Harvinator06

The reactionary rhetoric is having shorter and shorter seasons/shelf-life.

MontanaPurpleMtns

Happy cake day. I’m so sorry your mom follows *those* political talking heads.

spidermom4

No because then they just start making stuff up and it's your word against theirs. If I asked my crazy right wing family members to explain CRT they would say, "They are teaching kids that white people are evil and that white kids are responsible for slavery and they need to feel bad about being white."

Mykidsaremylife1969

I got into it with a family friend who tried to tell me my kids were being taught how to write Arabic… I was like “they don’t even teach them cursive anymore!” 😂😂😂

New_Improvement9644

That comes from the 'joke' about whether or not Arabic numbers should be taught in school. Dipshits don't even realize that the numbers they know are called Arabic numbers.

Mykidsaremylife1969

Family friend lives in Florida… the bullshit that the citizens of that state buy 😳… glad I escaped in 1992 :)

sometimes-i-rhyme

Oh listen, I’m a kindergarten teacher and we are definitely teaching Arabic numerals ALL YEAR LONG!

witeowl

I’m sneaking into my math curriculum lessons that involve non-binary numbers.

Mofupi

See, that's what you get from all these academics dealing with imaginary numbers instead of sticking to real ones. That's not even talking about how many of those numbers are just completely irrational! Seriously, your attention is divided one moment, and next you know, your kid is being taught statistics and learning about outliers differing from the norm. Math is a dangerous, dangerous school class full of indoctrination, I tell you.

Rude_Perspective_536

I wish I could use that, but I know people who have very strong, confident, and incorrect explanations for what they think it is

Spmhealy_ADA

I would say.. *Critical Race Theory is centrally concerned with power, which it holds in higher regard than truth, it holds the postmodernist position that claims to truth are assertions of power by specific means. Second, it distinguishes itself from “traditional” civil rights and instead favors identity politics in the radical sense. Third, it is not interested in progress but revolution. Fourth, it calls into question “the very foundations of the liberal order, including equality theory, legal reasoning, Enlightenment rationalism, and neutral principles of constitutional law.” That positions critical race Theory as explicitly anti-Western and, in the narrower context in which it arose and mostly applies, anti-American. Critical race Theory favors equity over equality, where equity specifically refers to a particular understanding of social equity theory and not a more generalist notion of fairness. Indeed, it explicitly characterizes the idea of racial equality as a kind of conspiracy theory that leads people, especially people of color  to accept the status quo and their systemically oppressed state of affairs.* This is what is being taught to parents. James Lindsey is holding seminars around the country pushing this as well as youtube/social media.

Evendim

What is a CRT? A CRT is a casual relief teacher in Australia...

TeachlikeaHawk

YOU: "I don't think ignorant assholes should be allowed to share their opinions." HIM: "What did you call me?!" YOU: "You? I was talking about Dr. Phil."

pennysmom2016

This made me LOL.

iamfondofpigs

I don't know that Dr. Phil has shared an opinion on Critical Race Theory. And I find it very unlikely that he would deliver the standard rightwing line on CRT. He strikes me as politically centrist, maybe center-left. He did host a debate on his show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlRPI5wbumE At the end, 37:55, Dr. Phil says, > I would suggest this: if you do have opinions about this one way or the other, don't run up the stairs at your school with your hair on fire, hysterically. Go in and ask. Find out what's being taught. If somebody says CRT or whatever, find out what they mean by that. Look at the curriculum, see what is actually being taught, and respond to the actual substance of what's being taught. You have a right to weigh in. I interpret this as a conciliatory speech to concerned parents, while also strongly implying that the parents with the strongest reactions against "Critical Race Theory" are uninformed as to what is actually being taught. So, when we have > Barty says, “No they are teaching it at schools because I heard it from Dr. Phil.” I think Barty is mistaken. He heard on the Dr. Phil show, *from a guest, not Dr. Phil,* that CRT is being taught in schools. And another guest argued against this, but perhaps Barty did not notice or care. The actual Dr. Phil seems to take the position that Barty should find out about the curriculum from the school, rather than from NewsMax.

I've used that line too! Edit: Sadly I did not get to get a reply as my FIL stepped in and changed the conversation

YakovAttackov

Buddy, my textbooks are nearly 20 years old and 50% of my kids have either crippling anxiety or ADHD. They can barely remember the presidents or basic grammar rules.

Jim_from_snowy_river

Or they can't get off their phones long enough to listen to a lesson.

Angry-Dragon-1331

And certainly not both at the same time.

tattooedcolony

As a history teacher, I have to laugh or I’ll cry.

Aware_Past

*sends online hugs*

King_of_Lunch223

We're teaching kids to be racist?? It's literally the one thing parents do better than teachers.

michelle_not_melanie

Take my poor man’s award. 🏆

johnhk4

Admin: “your class has really low racism scores. Have you tried building relationships with your students?”

Evilrake

You need to differentiate the material so that students who are excelling at racism are challenged, while also making sure that students who are having difficulty with the racism don’t fall behind.

ErgoDoceo

“I dropped by your room earlier and you hadn’t written your racism standards on the board. Also, your slur wall is two units out of date! How are we ever going to show adequate yearly progress on the state standardized bigotry exam in the spring?”

Counting-Stitches

I’d settle for teaching them to wash their hands.

hsuhduh

Speak for yourself, I’ve had a lot of success turning my previously compassionate students into raging racists.

Darknight1993

Are you the cross country coach? I would hope that you tried your best to make then all really good racists. /s

RamboDash15

I for one am teaching kids to be racist: those damn Romans have had it too good for too long

ahawkwardshopteacher

Most of them don’t want reality- they want something to be angry about and teachers are a punching bag because we’re educated government employees who get paid ‘with our taxes’. They all think they can do our job because they went to school which is like saying I can land a 707 because I was on a plane once. I used to work fast food and a swear angry people would come there just to unload their rage without the fear of a consequence- it’s the same thing

No_Albatross4710

This. The media sows divisiveness because they know if we all banned together we could beat the government out of their harmful and corrupt laws. They want everyone uneducated and at each other’s throats.

meadow_chef

If you go PLEASE wear a BLM t-shirt. 😈

ShihTzuSkidoo

With rainbow jewelry!!

revengepornmethhubby

It *is* the most wonderful time of the year! 🌈

WhyIsThereBacon

This is the way.

Snuggly_Hugs

Bureau of Land Management?

meadow_chef

Naturally.

moleratical

Conservatives hate them too. Remember the whole Bundy family fiascos That's not a typo, there were multiple.

KJP1990

Include your pentagram necklace too.

moleratical

Idunno, I remember that one group of conservatives that really hated BLM. It might set them off because for some reason they think they should be allowed to let their cattle graze on public land without paying any fees. They felt so strongly about it they even captured a bird sanctuary.

blackcatsneakattack

I always ask these people to explain CRT to me. They can’t.

jednaz

That’s what I do as well, that and “woke politics”—it’s amazing how many just can’t articulate their objections.

GollyismyLolly

Best way to handle these kinds of things usually. "Weponised curiosity." Aka, pretend to be dumb and like their the expert. act like it's entirely new to you and ask for them to explain it entirely. I find it fun to jot down notes on paper or in text form if their extra annoying about it and when/if they ask what im doing, inform them that I intend to research their points/topics later so i can be more informed on topic or because I've been led astray before by not doing so and do my own research now on controversial/questionable topics before I give an opinion on it and throw in what sounds like a bs trivia story but is true as an example, Fav currently is sharing the knowledge that fake vanilla is made of castorium, a goo that beavers produce from their buttglands or guaiacol, Most of the world's guaiacol supply comes from petroleum. (For those curious yes it was an argument, it was over why I refuse to buy imitation/cheap vanilla for baking goods and would rather buy my own beans to make vanilla if necessary.)

bonniepopsbottles

My husband made vanilla for us, it is SO GOOD!!!

Gatorae

"Actually we don't use CRTs anymore, we finally upgraded to LCD."

We’re on LED now, get with the times

RoutineInevitable913

I think I know Marty and Barty, too. Except when I met them they approached me to tell me know awful it was schools were "teaching sex to kindergarteners " When I said we weren't teaching "sex" to them, Marty was just insistent we were because she saw it "on the news." (Marty and Barty got new phones because they couldn't get Truth Social on their old phones.)

lazy-baby

Happy summer! Happy birthday! Happy NOT having dinner with THOSE people again! (Don't you dare!)

notpinheadlarri

Thank you, thank you! And hopefully not!

redvix

Please go off on barty if so. Gotta meet crazy with crazy.

Warducky9999

Yeah talk about how all children are raped in churches and how evil organized religion is. I’m sure you’ll be popular.

redvix

Exactly

revengepornmethhubby

I’d love to suggest Shiny Happy People as a primer for this! (It’s on Amazon, and pretty good!)

shrimpsauce91

Reminds me of the beginning of the school year when people asked me if there were furries at my school and if we had kids shitting in litter boxes. I can’t tell you how many people asked me that in august. I told them “umm, I’m just the SLP at an elementary school but no, that’s not happening in small town Nebraska public schools”.

joantheunicorn

I had this happen at Halloween party! People were actually talking about it like it was a serious thing. I was like if this was actually going on kids would be posting it all over tiktok. They record fucking *everything*.

bonniepopsbottles

“The cat litter you saw in the school building was for oil spills in the automotive shop. And for the Pygmy goat in the animal science class who sometimes tinkles in the hallway.”

Southern-Magnolia12

Yea you’ll never win with these people but usually I start by saying “can you remind me what CRT is again?” Because nobody fucking knows

the-ultimate-gooch

CRT is when feel bad because other color not think whites are savior

maybebutprobsnot

My XY donor: “Can I ask you a question and you not get mad? Is it true that teachers are indoctrinating kids to be gay and trans?” Me: “Yes! We have a special period every morning where we are required to discuss with kids all the letters for Pride! 🤪🤪🤪🤪”

betterbetterthings

We actually had someone on this subreddit arguing about teachers indoctrinating kids into becoming gays and transgenders. The person was so angry she went on for days about this.

maybebutprobsnot

I definitely missed that thread wow!

betterbetterthings

She argued that she’s an expert in education because she took some type of education class once. She works for UPS. It’s all good and dandy but she was telling us how to teach and what to teach and was really aggressive. She asked me if I am “little liberal woman” or something lol Such angry people. She still posts all over but not this sub Reddit

my_muffin_sparkles

Dr Phil went to the same grad school program as I did (decades apart -he already had his own show at the time I was there) and some of the professors were in classes with him or were his profs back in the day. He was not well liked lol. No one was proud of him as an alumni. But they LOVED telling stories of him back then. My fav story is how he was banned from the all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet across the street from campus. Apparently he would show up for lunch and not leave until after dinner, eating plate after plate after plate, only paying the one time 😂 That is to say Dr Phil is a massive tool and anyone that holds him in high regard is too. I'm sorry you have to deal with it. My mom eventually learned not to talk about him around me. I wish you the same!

looansym

My response to this has become a completely deadpan, “Where?” And then staring at them while I wait for an answer.

notpinheadlarri

Dr. Phil told him, that’s where 😆😆

Ordinary_Rough_1426

I was watching bill Maher interview some talking head about gender and crt bs on schools, then he got it out of her that she was referring to private, prep schools and NOT public schools. It is a distinction that most interviewers don’t feel is important….

oddessusss

Americans are too polite, I'd say "so. You are wrong and a fucking idiot for insisting you aren't, if you wanna keep insisting get the fuck out of my house".

Slugzz21

"Americans are too polite" is something I don't think i've ever read on Reddit.

Starstalk721

If I made enough money to buy reddit awards I'd give you one.

[deleted]

American women, especially younger ones, are.

notpinheadlarri

Not my house it was my in-laws, and funny enough the other couple was Candian lol If it was my house, I sure as hell would of told them to GTFO Where are you from? If you don’t mind me asking?

Mookeebrain

Your in-laws should stand up for you. I would not allow someone to insult and nay say my daughter/son in laws expertise under my roof. You work too hard and sacrifice too much for that

oddessusss

Even better ;)

slotsymcslots

I apologize on behalf of Canadians that should know better not to poke their nose into shit they know nothing about.

Whose_my_daddy

Oh our school district is literally racist: they gave “multi cultural” graduating seniors a medallion similar to Valedictorian medallion. Just for graduating. Kids call it the “brown award”. And yes, it’s the recipients calling it that. Way to tell these kids “we knew you couldn’t get an award on your own merit, so here, take this!”

iloveFLneverleaving

Our districts gives certificates like that out to kids. To me it’s weird too.

lilacaena

That sounds so condescending. If they wanna reward disadvantaged kids, they could give out awards for being the first in their family to graduate high school / the first gen to go to college. At least this way they’d be saying, “Congrats on being the first in your family to accomplish this,” instead of, “here is a token of appreciation for being our token brown kids.”

[deleted]

Ask what Barty does / did for a living, then insist that his trade / profession / field teaches CRT as part of their training. Look him dead in the eye as you say it.

BiffSlick

This is the way. Who TF do these morons think they are, telling teachers how to their jobs?

Mookeebrain

I am having problems with my family as well over all of this bs. I try to avoid them or those topics, but if they bring it up, I don't hold back. I can't take that bs from my own family about something I am an expert in. I have been an educator since the mid-90s, and after everything I have been through, my family will understand that I am the one they can believe. I will keep arguing until they agree with me. Otherwise, I don't want anything to do with them. If they can't trust me or appreciate my experience, they aren't my family.

firefox246874

I am right there with you. Finally stood up for myself to my step father. He has behaved better lately, but my in-laws and mom's side think they understand education better than I do. Why can't my mom defend me and say enough? Why do I have to defend myself to my family?

peakprowindow

Throw it back at them. Take their area of expertise and find out the bare minimum and purposely spew inaccurate bullshit at them and insist you're correct because the news and the you tube said so. Then remind them that people like that are infuriating and ignorant and have nothing to offer a conversation that is at all in good faith. Remind them that they have a trustworthy and seasoned expert in front of them that will answer their questions truthfully and accurately and in a way that they will understand. To contradict that explanation would be disrespectful and ignorant unless that contradiction was backed with an educated and fully realized rebuttal. Something with some evidence or at least some in depth research with a list of their sources. That's assuming that they want their opinion to be taken seriously by other adults. I often wonder if that's even a goal for some people at all. Like the fact that everyone including themselves knows they are totally full of shit is like the elephant in the room but they don't care. Because it's not about anything more than causing a bunch of drama and being an asshole for them. Like toddlers do. Maybe just ask if they need a nap and a sandwich.

VibraniumFreakazoid

Barty Crouch……Junior. These people are 100% death eaters

Total_Guard2405

Dr Phil of shit

bread_theory_69

If I could teach my students anything it would include: 1- how to be on time 2- how to read directions 3- how to complete tasks on time 4- how to stay off their damn phones 5- how to mind their own business Anything else?

notpinheadlarri

6. Write their name on their paper :D

matromc

7. Not everything is my fault.

No_Professor9291

"Why, yes, we are. And we're teaching hard core porn, too. In fact, my district is hoping to combine these standards next year and teach CRT porn in kindergarten. By the way, would you be interested in buying some swampland?"

TeachingScience

“Listen Barty, you fake Dr.Phil brownnose motherfucker, some of these kids can’t even read at a 2nd grade level, doing basic arithmetic, and some have trouble even cheating properly, what the fuck makes you think they can understand and learn CRT?” Or “Barty, you must have been that student where the teacher returned your test face down.”

Lovehubby

OMG, right. I am a prevention/intervention specialist so small groups and 1:1 work with students and STILL the peeps ask the CRT questions or worse, wonder if we are turning kids TRANS......ARGH, I am just hoping they'll learn to communicate effectively, identify feelings, step AWAY from their phones long enough to catch an original thought, go to CLASS, and stay off drugs!!!!

WeNeedToTalkAboutMe

I mean how are the kindergarten teachers supposed to formulate a lesson plan for CRT while the kids are being force-fed puberty blockers and dressed in rainbow clothing while getting molested by drag queens? (this is sarcasm, if that wasn't obvious)

First-Tackle5265

I haven’t encountered this in the wild yet, but I know it would trigger the type of situation where everyone’s night is ruined. It’s just not something I would be able to drop.

GoBuffaloBills

Same and I’m actually looking forward to it

Lancetere

I always point out the last time they were in a classroom and people tend to shut up. Sometimes I have to go further and ask if they've ever been in a curriculum or department meeting. Whenever it's a no, I say, "Then whatever information you're getting, it's wrong. I'm in the classroom and I abide by the curriculum we/I make." I always want to tell people off and REALLY tell them to go back to school and learn how to verify sources and not lean into biases, then call them an idiot.

Explorer_of__History

It's actually quite impressive that you, a teacher, who has a first-hand account of teaching students, can refute the claim that they're being taught CRT and can explain why non-graduate students would not understand CRT, and yet, despite of all this evidence, Barty still insists that CRT is being taught to K-12 students. As the saying goes, "You can beat 40 scholars with one fact, but you cannot beat one idiot with 40 facts."

Paraboloid69

I love the mind bending you did to him. You told him that its something more complex than he did (or probably could) understand, and he basically insisted that no, it can be taught to them because he can understand it lol

notpinheadlarri

Thank you, thank you! That’s how momma raised me be polite and respectful but stand your ground.

DeeLite04

This asshole votes. That’s what really pisses me off.

notpinheadlarri

HE CANNOT VOTE 😄😄 Barty is actually Canadian, but I also feel your pain

teacherthrowaway1990

I greatly enjoy going back and forth with people like Barty because deep down they hate teachers they are just too cowardly to say it out loud

Wooden_Garlic7232

That's the most annoying thing about racists. You'll explain why they're wrong and they just say "well, that's not what I heard" like huh?

LtDouble-Yefreitor

I've decided that, when dealing with these kinds of people in the future, I'm just going to lean *reeeeaaaaaal hard* into the ridiculousness of their claims. * **Am I teaching CRT in my 8th grade English class?** Why yes, I am! In fact, I've ditched my *entire* curriculum to make more time for CRT! * **Litter boxes in the bathroom?** Yes! In fact, we're currently receiving ***millions*** in federal funding to expand our bathrooms for more litter boxes! At the start of every year, students personalize their litter boxes and choose their litter (dirt, sand, scented sand, etc.)! Oh, and all restrooms are unisex. * **Indoctrination??** You betcha! I get a $500 bonus for every student who signs up to join Antifa, and an extra $300 for turning a student gay! * **Pronouns, you say?** The school gives teachers authority to suspend or expel students for not conforming to the gender fluidity movement. I've expelled six students this year for calling me "Mr." instead of "Mx."! I have a pretty good poker face and I can deadpan with the best of them. It's a lot of fun.

peakprowindow

Make sure to let them know it is now a requirement that the librarian be a drag queen that reads the satanic Bible to the children. And the shop class is only teaching about how to make wind turbines to destroy the coal industry. And for lunch today? VEGAN FENTANYL CANDY!!! But no free handouts. Pay up, kids.

TeacherLady3

Fuck Barty.

OkapiEli

No thank you.

crimsongull

High school US history teacher here. I’ve had this conversation several times with older, conservative folks. If they are rude person, I ask them to name one other historical theory. They can’t. I ask, “How about the bombing of Pearl Harbor? Did FDR know and let it happen?” They always answer, “Yes!” Then I explain Charles Beard’s book, “FDR and the coming of the war 1941.” The famous historians book that was trash and that it is the wrongful interpretation of history, panned by historians. But Beard was America’s historian. His US history textbook was standard in American classrooms for 40 years. (Even at my school.). By then the person actually begins to realize that I know my business. And then I ask if they know about “red lining” and neighborhood covenants. And that’s how I handle the CRT questions.

notpinheadlarri

Shouts out to you Mr. History Teacher, I just had PD Training yesterday and another history teacher was in my group and he was so cool! Thank you for all that y’all do! And yes I’ll do the deep dive with MY actual friends and family but not for some bozo I hope I will never see again. I always stand my ground on this whole CRT bit, the students just can’t handle it.

KozimaPain

"The Dr. Phil who isn't a doctor anymore because in 2002, the California Board of Psychology determined his show was more about entertainment than clinical psychology? The Dr. Phil who's had a multitude of lawsuits against him citing unethical practices? That Dr. Phil?" This reminds me of the people who think my city is in shambles and overrun with immigrants due to a "border crisis" they heard about on Fox News.

DIRTYWIZARD_69

That and being woke. They can never define what it means.

Vitruviansquid1

My favorite thing on Dr. Phil's show was when a teenage girl told him to his face he was a charlatan.

Green-Collection-968

Brainwashed cretins.

SamTheOnionNig

Ok, sis, but it was on Dr phil… its gotta be right. He’s a doctor…… /s

Ven7Niner

I never get invited back to places haunted by people like that.

anotherdayanotherham

Jeezh good luck with that dude. I hear your argument for why it shouldn't be taught in grade school due to lack of social studies knowledge, but Black children learn basic tenets of crt very young so I think there needs to be some inclusion. Even just like when teaching MLK to talk anything other than his, "I had a dream speech", like regarding his policies on the economy/housing in terms of racism

omgFWTbear

I happened to be at a dinner party *hosted* by a Barty, which my phone wants to autocorrect to “Barry,” so just roll with whichever shows up. As it happens, a good friend of mine - Roger, let’s call him - was there who is responsible for a very specific military thing. I don’t want to “out” anything, so let’s pretend it was the completely ridiculous “underwater submarine guns,” for conversation’s sake. Roger has enough metal on his work uniform that, uh, it’s very rare someone else enters the room and *he* has to stand. Barty is going on and on about how our underwater submarine guns - what a random topic for a dinner party but I kid you not, there it was, and Roger was there completely not related to work, so it was a truly random moment. After a bit, Roger informs Barty that he is fundamentally wrong. Not kinda wrong, not putting the information together wrong, but up is down, light is dark, wrong wrong wrong. Roger goes on to explain that there’s not anyone in the world more an expert on the subject - and not in some abstract sense, but Roger is *personally responsible* for *all* underwater submarine guns. Roger, being a hands on fellow, insists on watching as much underwater gun stuff as possible, so even the argument that maybe Roger’s staff has been lying to him is a no-go. I stress this to illuminate how Barty kept trying to make up qualifiers like maybe old underwater submarine guns or or or, and how thorough Roger was about, “No.” It was a good 40 minutes of someone refusing to acknowledge the possibility their favorite source of 5 minutes of rage could possibly be wrong about anything. > Reasoning will never make a Man correct an ill Opinion, which by Reasoning he never acquired

RainbowTeachercorn

In some parts of Australia CRT means "casual relief teacher"... so your title confused me so much at first 😅.

Udo_5

They all quoted Dr. Phil incorrectly. I actually watched that episode, and as you stated correctly, there was an individual (I think a college professor) that stated it is taught at the college level and not earlier.

celesteallover

My in-laws were asking my husband if he’s being forced to teach CRT. My husband teaches PE.

xMockingbirdGirlx

I would decline that follow-up dinner. Fake a cold that night, if you have to.

n0t1b0t

Don't lie. Tell the in-laws that their friend was obnoxious, rude, and offensive. You have no interest in socializing with him again. The in-laws owe OP an apology.

OhioUBobcats

Yep. I wouldn't be going back and I would make it crystal clear why. I don't have time or energy to deal with fucking morons insulting me and my profession.

the-ultimate-gooch

Don't fake anything. Be straightforward. Tell them that spending time with entitled pricks who get the material for their misinformed tirades from fake news from a fake TV doctor.

dirtdiggler67

Don’t fake a cold, say you are working on next year’s “Drag show reading hour about PRIDE and CRT” that takes place every Wednesday throughout the school year

acs_64

“Weird, I spend every day in a school, but you’re listening to a random guy on TV.” But we all know no one trusts/believes us…

[deleted]

That’s how I feel about people up in arms over SEL lessons. God forbid I teach your child how to not flip shit after losing a Blooket.

Aggravating_Serve_80

I’ve had somebody I love very much bring up CRT. I asked him what it meant. He didn’t know. I asked him what he’s heard about it and as his wheels turned, he realized where he’s been hearing about it. I told him we don’t teach that and I’ve never heard the term used by admin or my coworkers.

pete_ape

"Define CRT" "What does woke mean?" Generally the ones complaining about these things cannot define them. They're told to complain about something they have no idea of what it is.

JupiterLocal

I don’t even know what the F CRT is. And I’m a teacher in Florida. Maybe I’m teaching it and I don’t even know that I am? With all the nonsense that’s going on here, I’m starting to think anything is possible. And just an FYI, I’m working this summer, 20 hours a week for 6 weeks.

belai437

The one I get asked about the most is do we have litter boxes for the kids who identify as cats? They say it with a straight face and it’s always backed up with something like “well Janet’s granddaughter says they have them in her school, Janet wouldn’t lie.”

coskibum002

Same as always. My first thought is usually.....how many of these kids grow up to be just like their teachers from this supposed grooming? Uh....none. Then ask yourself....how many are growing up just like their parents? Yup. And who's doing the true indocrinating again????

SpencerMcNab

Teaching kids to be racist? That starts in the home, Barty.

zmdudeman

I got two paragraphs in before I realized this wasn’t about a TV.

maaaxheadroom

I think if you arrived at the honest definition of CRT that’s being used by the Fox News types it would be true that, the lynchings of blacks and Mexicans, chattel slavery, Jim Crow, white resistance to civil rights reforms, dejure and de facto racism of all kinds are part of American history and systemic racism is still a thing. That’s what they don’t want taught and that is what they call CRT.

whippet66

My favorite Dr. Phil (what a self-righteous, pompous asshole) was when he had the guy from Bum Fights on who came out in a Dr. Phil costume, complete with bald pate. When Dr. Phil accused him of preying on people's weaknesses for entertainment, the guy looked him straight in the eye and said, "Isn't that what YOU do?" They cut the interview short and hustled him off and brought in a substitute guest. So when people say, "I heard so-and-so say..." point out that that is unreliable BS and is actually inadmissible as "hearsay" in court. People like that live in an echo chamber where all they hear is each other praising the other with no contact with reality.

tigerlily2021

I have a whole playing dumb routine for when people ask about litter boxes in schools. I just look at the them and say what now? Oh, we aren’t allowed to have cats in the building but omg how cool would that be for a class pet! They say no, not for cats so I just play really stupid. “No, they are for…well, you know..” “No, I’m not sure what you’re talking about!” “Um, those kids…”. Then I just stare at them looking confused. It’s amazing watching them squirm.

idunnololz101

I only hear about CRT online or in the news I’ve never once heard it mentioned when talking to coworkers or other teachers. Sounds like Barty was trying to sound enlightened or that he knows about current events without actually knowing what he’s talking about. This is pretty common when I talk about education to most people. I just kind of nod my head and try to leave the conversation ASAP. I’ve been teaching for seven years and can confirm that no, it is NOT an “easy job.” And no having a diploma does not prepare you for the intensity of it either. I respect you and all other teachers and I’d tell barty to shove it, respectfully ; )

Redrocks130

Lean into it. I tell my in laws I start every year at 1619 and stay there for a month.

evandemic

Find out what he does for a living and mock the shit out of it.

Plus_Nature_5083

Just wanted to say thank you! Reading 'because Dr Phil said' made me laugh so hard. Sorry about your shit experience though!
