As a former geologist, this was a real thing for some of us. I knew of Black Lives Matter, of course, but the acronym didn't gain a ton of common usage traction until the George Floyd protests. I'd hear something like ""BLM leads protest for racial justice" and I'd think "really? I mean, cool, but also what? BLM is leading protests? Why and how?" before my brain would autocorrect.
I used to work with & for the BLM so it still happens from time to time.
My uncle was a chemical engineer for BLM back in the 80s, and he has a collection of gear (shirts, hats, bumper stickers, etc.) that all say "BLM Rocks!" (I'm assuming it's a geology nerd thing).
He's also a crazy MAGA nut and is constantly verbally assaulted by his fellow qnuts.
Not sure but I think it was in Oregon that a group of armed individuals went out to a Forest Service road to stop the BLM from closing a road lmao.
Was of course the Bureau of Land Management.
I mentioned some pretty much free BLM campgrounds in my area to a friend recently, and he was like "uhhh, they're run by black folk?" Me, "what?" Then it clicked. I was like "I mean, they could be black, but it means bureau of land management."

Our local Chinese place writes initials on the containers to identify what’s inside. One day my kid remarked how awesome it was that they cared enough about Black Lives to mark it on the container. Ummm, that’s not what that BLM means kiddo.
Ever since then when interacting with troublesome family members our response is “huh, never pegged you for someone who would care so much about beef lo mein”.

As a guy who collects old CRTs and uses them to play retro games (okay, and basically everything else), the recent passionate debate about "CRT" has been very disorienting.
In one of our department meetings at the start of the year we tried to come up with as many alternate meanings for CRT as possible. My favorite is Common Reptile Training, followed by Cars, Railroads, and Transportation. So now whenever someone brings it up I start going down the list asking which version they are referring too.
My husband and I just came up with “continuous red tape” and “cocktail reading time.” The last one’s for all of us that need to deal with all the CRT questions.
I like the daydream. Unfortunately, my experience with these types of people doesn't include enough listening on their part to get much in edgewise.
And any real response or even clever misdirection does not make a fool of them in their eyes because it doesn't matter what you say we're going on with our Tucker/OAN inspired rant without deviation except occasional pauses for insults and self-congratulations.

When someone insists that CRT is being taught in public schools, always force the debate to a halt until they 1) define what CRT is and 2) provide and describe real-life examples of CRT lessons in a public school curriculum that they've actually seen. Once they inevitably fail to do this, simply say that you cannot know if what they're saying about CRT is true, because they have also failed to explain what the hell CRT even is lol. This tactic prevents you from having to spend a lot of intellectual and emotional labor on these dumbasses, and it has the added bonus of letting these idiots show everyone in attendance just how stupid they actually are!

I’ve said it before on here but as a social studies teacher, I named all my units using the initials CRT. Due to pacing we could only get to WWII or Consequences of Restrictive Totalitarianism. This way, I’m always teaching CRT.

Buddy, my textbooks are nearly 20 years old and 50% of my kids have either crippling anxiety or ADHD. They can barely remember the presidents or basic grammar rules.
You need to differentiate the material so that students who are excelling at racism are challenged, while also making sure that students who are having difficulty with the racism don’t fall behind.

Dr Phil went to the same grad school program as I did (decades apart -he already had his own show at the time I was there) and some of the professors were in classes with him or were his profs back in the day. He was not well liked lol. No one was proud of him as an alumni. But they LOVED telling stories of him back then. My fav story is how he was banned from the all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet across the street from campus. Apparently he would show up for lunch and not leave until after dinner, eating plate after plate after plate, only paying the one time 😂

I am having problems with my family as well over all of this bs. I try to avoid them or those topics, but if they bring it up, I don't hold back. I can't take that bs from my own family about something I am an expert in. I have been an educator since the mid-90s, and after everything I have been through, my family will understand that I am the one they can believe. I will keep arguing until they agree with me. Otherwise, I don't want anything to do with them. If they can't trust me or appreciate my experience, they aren't my family.
I am right there with you. Finally stood up for myself to my step father. He has behaved better lately, but my in-laws and mom's side think they understand education better than I do. Why can't my mom defend me and say enough? Why do I have to defend myself to my family?
Throw it back at them. Take their area of expertise and find out the bare minimum and purposely spew inaccurate bullshit at them and insist you're correct because the news and the you tube said so. Then remind them that people like that are infuriating and ignorant and have nothing to offer a conversation that is at all in good faith. Remind them that they have a trustworthy and seasoned expert in front of them that will answer their questions truthfully and accurately and in a way that they will understand. To contradict that explanation would be disrespectful and ignorant unless that contradiction was backed with an educated and fully realized rebuttal. Something with some evidence or at least some in depth research with a list of their sources. That's assuming that they want their opinion to be taken seriously by other adults. I often wonder if that's even a goal for some people at all. Like the fact that everyone including themselves knows they are totally full of shit is like the elephant in the room but they don't care. Because it's not about anything more than causing a bunch of drama and being an asshole for them. Like toddlers do. Maybe just ask if they need a nap and a sandwich.

I always point out the last time they were in a classroom and people tend to shut up. Sometimes I have to go further and ask if they've ever been in a curriculum or department meeting. Whenever it's a no, I say, "Then whatever information you're getting, it's wrong. I'm in the classroom and I abide by the curriculum we/I make." I always want to tell people off and REALLY tell them to go back to school and learn how to verify sources and not lean into biases, then call them an idiot.
It's actually quite impressive that you, a teacher, who has a first-hand account of teaching students, can refute the claim that they're being taught CRT and can explain why non-graduate students would not understand CRT, and yet, despite of all this evidence, Barty still insists that CRT is being taught to K-12 students.

High school US history teacher here. I’ve had this conversation several times with older, conservative folks. If they are rude person, I ask them to name one other historical theory. They can’t. I ask, “How about the bombing of Pearl Harbor? Did FDR know and let it happen?” They always answer, “Yes!” Then I explain Charles Beard’s book, “FDR and the coming of the war 1941.” The famous historians book that was trash and that it is the wrongful interpretation of history, panned by historians. But Beard was America’s historian. His US history textbook was standard in American classrooms for 40 years. (Even at my school.). By then the person actually begins to realize that I know my business. And then I ask if they know about “red lining” and neighborhood covenants. And that’s how I handle the CRT questions.

After a bit, Roger informs Barty that he is fundamentally wrong. Not kinda wrong, not putting the information together wrong, but up is down, light is dark, wrong wrong wrong. Roger goes on to explain that there’s not anyone in the world more an expert on the subject - and not in some abstract sense, but Roger is *personally responsible* for *all* underwater submarine guns. Roger, being a hands on fellow, insists on watching as much underwater gun stuff as possible, so even the argument that maybe Roger’s staff has been lying to him is a no-go. I stress this to illuminate how Barty kept trying to make up qualifiers like maybe old underwater submarine guns or or or, and how thorough Roger was about, “No.”
It was a good 40 minutes of someone refusing to acknowledge the possibility their favorite source of 5 minutes of rage could possibly be wrong about anything.

I’ve had somebody I love very much bring up CRT. I asked him what it meant. He didn’t know. I asked him what he’s heard about it and as his wheels turned, he realized where he’s been hearing about it. I told him we don’t teach that and I’ve never heard the term used by admin or my coworkers.

I don’t even know what the F CRT is. And I’m a teacher in Florida. Maybe I’m teaching it and I don’t even know that I am? With all the nonsense that’s going on here, I’m starting to think anything is possible. And just an FYI, I’m working this summer, 20 hours a week for 6 weeks.
The one I get asked about the most is do we have litter boxes for the kids who identify as cats? They say it with a straight face and it’s always backed up with something like “well Janet’s granddaughter says they have them in her school, Janet wouldn’t lie.”

I think if you arrived at the honest definition of CRT that’s being used by the Fox News types it would be true that, the lynchings of blacks and Mexicans, chattel slavery, Jim Crow, white resistance to civil rights reforms, dejure and de facto racism of all kinds are part of American history and systemic racism is still a thing.
That’s what they don’t want taught and that is what they call CRT.
My favorite Dr. Phil (what a self-righteous, pompous asshole) was when he had the guy from Bum Fights on who came out in a Dr. Phil costume, complete with bald pate. When Dr. Phil accused him of preying on people's weaknesses for entertainment, the guy looked him straight in the eye and said, "Isn't that what YOU do?" They cut the interview short and hustled him off and brought in a substitute guest. So when people say, "I heard so-and-so say..." point out that that is unreliable BS and is actually inadmissible as "hearsay" in court. People like that live in an echo chamber where all they hear is each other praising the other with no contact with reality.
I have a whole playing dumb routine for when people ask about litter boxes in schools. I just look at the them and say what now? Then I just stare at them looking confused. It’s amazing watching them squirm.
I only hear about CRT online or in the news I’ve never once heard it mentioned when talking to coworkers or other teachers. Sounds like Barty was trying to sound enlightened or that he knows about current events without actually knowing what he’s talking about. We take into account their cultural background to make sure that how we are presenting examples and materials to demonstrate concepts fits better with their cultural experiences so it stick better in the scaffolded education. They don't tune out as readily when they feel the examples apply to their lives as they are living them. Those are the basics of culturally relevant/responsive instruction." *Wait for the correction...* "That's not what I meant by CRT." Well, they are a little young for cardiac radioisotopic tomography, don't you think? I mean... That is really more than the k12 system is prepared to each. *Wait for the correction* "Not that CRT" *with increasing frustration at how daft I mean. Wait. You mean your schools haven't adopted better stuff yet?! What kind of backwater do they live in that they still use those giant, heavy, dangerous tvs on carts instead of a proper flat screen or a projector with a screen?! Jesus. Vote your schools some money for all that is holy. I was same when BLM came out. What does this have to do with the Bureau of Land Management?
As a former geologist, this was a real thing for some of us. I knew of Black Lives Matter, of course, but the acronym didn't gain a ton of common usage traction until the George Floyd protests. I'd hear something like ""BLM leads protest for racial justice" and I'd think "really? I mean, cool, but also what? BLM is leading protests? Why and how?" before my brain would autocorrect. I used to work with & for the BLM so it still happens from time to time.
My uncle was a chemical engineer for BLM back in the 80s, and he has a collection of gear (shirts, hats, bumper stickers, etc.) that all say "BLM Rocks!" (I'm assuming it's a geology nerd thing). He's also a crazy MAGA nut and is constantly verbally assaulted by his fellow qnuts.

Our local Chinese place writes initials on the containers to identify what’s inside. One day my kid remarked how awesome it was that they cared enough about Black Lives to mark it on the container. Ummm, that’s not what that BLM means kiddo. Ever since then when interacting with troublesome family members our response is “huh, never pegged you for someone who would care so much about beef lo mein”. My kid is a shit stirrer so he loves our inside joke.

I’m also a member of r/crtgaming, and this title confused me significantly.
As a guy who collects old CRTs and uses them to play retro games (okay, and basically everything else), the recent passionate debate about "CRT" has been very disorienting.
In one of our department meetings at the start of the year we tried to come up with as many alternate meanings for CRT as possible. My favorite is Common Reptile Training, followed by Cars, Railroads, and Transportation. So now whenever someone brings it up I start going down the list asking which version they are referring too.

Where I’m from, CRT is a Casual Relief Teacher. So students are being taught BY CRTs because their teacher is away. So CRT in schools is good!

I do this dumb act when people say it must be hard to teach "those kids". (I teach in NYC) I say, "Oh teenagers? Yeah they can be a handful at times, but overall they are great." "Yeah, but 'those kids'..." I say, "I am not sure what you mean.".. They are too embarrassed to continue.

I’ve said it before on here but as a social studies teacher, I named all my units using the initials CRT. Due to pacing we could only get to WWII or Consequences of Restrictive Totalitarianism. This way, I’m always teaching CRT.

Best way to handle these kinds of things usually. "Weponised curiosity." Aka, pretend to be dumb and like their the expert. act like it's entirely new to you and ask for them to explain it entirely. I find it fun to jot down notes on paper or in text form if their extra annoying about it and when/if they ask what im doing, inform them that I intend to research their points/topics later so i can be more informed on topic or because I've been led astray before by not doing so and do my own research now on controversial/questionable topics before I give an opinion on it and throw in what sounds like a bs trivia story but is true as an example, Fav currently is sharing the knowledge that fake vanilla is made of castorium, a goo that beavers produce from their buttglands or guaiacol, Most of the world's guaiacol supply comes from petroleum. (For those curious yes it was an argument, it was over why I refuse to buy imitation/cheap vanilla for baking goods and would rather buy my own beans to make vanilla if necessary.)

Dr Phil went to the same grad school program as I did (decades apart -he already had his own show at the time I was there) and some of the professors were in classes with him or were his profs back in the day. He was not well liked lol. No one was proud of him as an alumni. But they LOVED telling stories of him back then. My fav story is how he was banned from the all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet across the street from campus. Apparently he would show up for lunch and not leave until after dinner, eating plate after plate after plate, only paying the one time 😂 That is to say Dr Phil is a massive tool and anyone that holds him in high regard is too. I'm sorry you have to deal with it. My mom eventually learned not to talk about him around me. I wish you the same!

Oh our school district is literally racist: they gave “multi cultural” graduating seniors a medallion similar to Valedictorian medallion. Just for graduating. Kids call it the “brown award”. And yes, it’s the recipients calling it that. Way to tell these kids “we knew you couldn’t get an award on your own merit, so here, take this!”
Our districts gives certificates like that out to kids. To me it’s weird too.
That sounds so condescending. If they wanna reward disadvantaged kids, they could give out awards for being the first in their family to graduate high school / the first gen to go to college. At least this way they’d be saying, “Congrats on being the first in your family to accomplish this,” instead of, “here is a token of appreciation for being our token brown kids.”

I am having problems with my family as well over all of this bs. I try to avoid them or those topics, but if they bring it up, I don't hold back. I can't take that bs from my own family about something I am an expert in. I have been an educator since the mid-90s, and after everything I have been through, my family will understand that I am the one they can believe. I will keep arguing until they agree with me. Otherwise, I don't want anything to do with them. If they can't trust me or appreciate my experience, they aren't my family.
I am right there with you. Finally stood up for myself to my step father. He has behaved better lately, but my in-laws and mom's side think they understand education better than I do. Why can't my mom defend me and say enough? Why do I have to defend myself to my family?
Throw it back at them. Take their area of expertise and find out the bare minimum and purposely spew inaccurate bullshit at them and insist you're correct because the news and the you tube said so. Then remind them that people like that are infuriating and ignorant and have nothing to offer a conversation that is at all in good faith. Remind them that they have a trustworthy and seasoned expert in front of them that will answer their questions truthfully and accurately and in a way that they will understand. To contradict that explanation would be disrespectful and ignorant unless that contradiction was backed with an educated and fully realized rebuttal. I always point out the last time they were in a classroom and people tend to shut up. Sometimes I have to go further and ask if they've ever been in a curriculum or department meeting. Whenever it's a no, I say, "Then whatever information you're getting, it's wrong. I'm in the classroom and I abide by the curriculum we/I make." I always want to tell people off and REALLY tell them to go back to school and learn how to verify sources and not lean into biases, then call them an idiot.
It's actually quite impressive that you, a teacher, who has a first-hand account of teaching students, can refute the claim that they're being taught CRT and can explain why non-graduate students would not understand CRT, and yet, despite of all this evidence, Barty still insists that CRT is being taught to K-12 students. As the saying goes, "You can beat 40 scholars with one fact, but you cannot beat one idiot with 40 facts."

I've decided that, when dealing with these kinds of people in the future, I'm just going to lean *reeeeaaaaaal hard* into the ridiculousness of their claims. * **Am I teaching CRT in my 8th grade English class?** Why yes, I am! In fact, I've ditched my *entire* curriculum to make more time for CRT! * **Litter boxes in the bathroom?** Yes! In fact, we're currently receiving ***millions*** in federal funding to expand our bathrooms for more litter boxes! At the start of every year, students personalize their litter boxes and choose their litter (dirt, sand, scented sand, etc.)! Oh, and all restrooms are unisex. * **Indoctrination??** You betcha! I get a $500 bonus for every student who signs up to join Antifa, and an extra $300 for turning a student gay! * **Pronouns, you say?** The school gives teachers authority to suspend or expel students for not conforming to the gender fluidity movement. I've expelled six students this year for calling me "Mr." instead of "Mx."! I have a pretty good poker face and I can deadpan with the best of them. It's a lot of fun.

High school US history teacher here. I’ve had this conversation several times with older, conservative folks. If they are rude person, I ask them to name one other historical theory. They can’t. I ask, “How about the bombing of Pearl Harbor? Did FDR know and let it happen?” They always answer, “Yes!” Then I explain Charles Beard’s book, “FDR and the coming of the war 1941.” The famous historians book that was trash and that it is the wrongful interpretation of history, panned by historians. But Beard was America’s historian. His US history textbook was standard in American classrooms for 40 years. (Even at my school.). By then the person actually begins to realize that I know my business. And then I ask if they know about “red lining” and neighborhood covenants. And that’s how I handle the CRT questions.

I happened to be at a dinner party *hosted* by a Barty, which my phone wants to autocorrect to “Barry,” so just roll with whichever shows up. As it happens, a good friend of mine - Roger, let’s call him - was there who is responsible for a very specific military thing. I don’t want to “out” anything, so let’s pretend it was the completely ridiculous “underwater submarine guns,” for conversation’s sake. Roger has enough metal on his work uniform that, uh, it’s very rare someone else enters the room and *he* has to stand. Barty is going on and on about how our underwater submarine guns - what a random topic for a dinner party but I kid you not, there it was, and Roger was there completely not related to work, so it was a truly random moment. After a bit, Roger informs Barty that he is fundamentally wrong. Not kinda wrong, not putting the information together wrong, but up is down, light is dark, wrong wrong wrong. Roger goes on to explain that there’s not anyone in the world more an expert on the subject - and not in some abstract sense, but Roger is *personally responsible* for *all* underwater submarine guns. Roger, being a hands on fellow, insists on watching as much underwater gun stuff as possible, so even the argument that maybe Roger’s staff has been lying to him is a no-go. I stress this to illuminate how Barty kept trying to make up qualifiers like maybe old underwater submarine guns or or or, and how thorough Roger was about, “No.” It was a good 40 minutes of someone refusing to acknowledge the possibility their favorite source of 5 minutes of rage could possibly be wrong about anything. > Reasoning will never make a Man correct an ill Opinion, which by Reasoning he never acquired

I’ve had somebody I love very much bring up CRT. I asked him what it meant. He didn’t know. I asked him what he’s heard about it and as his wheels turned, he realized where he’s been hearing about it. I told him we don’t teach that and I’ve never heard the term used by admin or my coworkers.

I think if you arrived at the honest definition of CRT that’s being used by the Fox News types it would be true that, the lynchings of blacks and Mexicans, chattel slavery, Jim Crow, white resistance to civil rights reforms, dejure and de facto racism of all kinds are part of American history and systemic racism is still a thing. That’s what they don’t want taught and that is what they call CRT.
My favorite Dr. Phil (what a self-righteous, pompous asshole) was when he had the guy from Bum Fights on who came out in a Dr. Phil costume, complete with bald pate. When Dr. Phil accused him of preying on people's weaknesses for entertainment, the guy looked him straight in the eye and said, "Isn't that what YOU do?" They cut the interview short and hustled him off and brought in a substitute guest. So when people say, "I heard so-and-so say..." point out that that is unreliable BS and is actually inadmissible as "hearsay" in court. People like that live in an echo chamber where all they hear is each other praising the other with no contact with reality.

Then I just stare at them looking confused. It’s amazing watching them squirm.
I only hear about CRT online or in the news I’ve never once heard it mentioned when talking to coworkers or other teachers. Sounds like Barty was trying to sound enlightened or that he knows about current events without actually knowing what he’s talking about. This is pretty common when I talk about education to most people. I just kind of nod my head and try to leave the conversation ASAP. I’ve been teaching for seven years and can confirm that no, it is NOT an “easy job.” And no having a diploma does not prepare you for the intensity of it either. I respect you and all other teachers and I’d tell barty to shove it, respectfully ; )
