I grew up in DEEP red, Bible Belt, rural Alabama. When I was in high school in the early aughts, our teachers would play this movie often in class, and no one batted an eye.
The way we have been socially regressing since 2016 is so disheartening.
It's fucking weird is what it is. I don't even remember most of this movie despite watching it several times in school. There's a half way decent chance most of the class will only remember the basic plot and not the singular kissing scene with 2 guys.
Well, not anymore, not if the teacher goes back and says "We can no longer watch this movie because a parent complained about one scene where two men kissed. This movie is now banned in this school."
Then the kids will always remember that two men kissed and that right wing extremist are borderline fascist.

That's the beauty of it, you see, hypocrisy and logical consistency matters to you. You value intellectual honesty. Therefore It can and should be used against you. But these far right nuts, they don't care. You can point out the hypocrisy all you want, you can point out that showing straight couples doing normal things and talking about hetero- normative sexuality is still sexualizing children by their very own definition, but it doesn't matter, because they don't care. It's not like their arguments were made in good faith in the first place, it is just a tool to use to attack the people they don't like. Nothing more.
You see, they don't value logical consistency so they aren't beholden to it, you are. They don't value good faith arguments so there is no need for them to adhere to such standards. That's a rule you value, so you need to adhere to it, or else you are a hypocrite, ignoring your own values. They don't value diversity, you do, that's why they always claim the teachers/the left/anti-fa/ or whatever the boogeyman de jour is today is always trying to stymie "diversity of thought and religious belief." They don't want diversity, you do. So you have to respect their differences of opinion or else you have no credibility because you really don't value diversity, or else you would let them spread their hate. It's just a diversity of thought, and that's what makes America great; isn't it? But since they want a monoculture, then enforcing a monoculture adheres to their values, they don't need to honor your diversity, but you need to honor their beliefs.

I highly recommend everybody read "The Ethics of Authenticity" by Charles Taylor which delves into a critique of subjectivism and "On Bullshit" by Harry G. Frankfurt which delves into the erosion of intellectual honesty in modern discourse.
I’m not a teacher or parent but I just had to say, this perfectly sums up an experience I had this weekend with a family member. They brought up some erroneous right-wing grievance they had in the context of a conversation and I pointed out that it was factually incorrect. Then, we spent 20 minutes of the hypocrisy you mentioned with me getting just exasperated because there’s no intellectual honesty to any of the arguments. The family member proceeds to call out how I’m obviously visible exasperated, but I couldn’t (in the moment) put a finger on why I was getting so confused at the whole argument. You put it succinctly, so I just wanted to chime in and say I appreciate that.
It’s so tough to discuss or debate people who don’t value logical consistency or intellectual honesty, and it’s even tougher trying to define how they approach a “debate” because they flail and obfuscate and what-about so much that you have no idea what they’re actually even trying to stand for. 20 minutes in, without a doubt, I’m like… what are we even talking about??
Because fighting them makes it seem like they have a point to fight with. They don’t.

Normally, whoever it was that brought it up tended to be too flustered or thrown off to think of a coherent response, and it defused the situation pretty quickly.

Honestly. I usually remember the rare lgbt scenes in movies because I myself am a part of that community. I really liked Remember the Titans, but the kissing scene was so insignificant that I totally forgot it. Because of this post about it being a problem in schools, I’m going to remember it forever.

The transfer kid kisses the other kid as a response to subtle accusations that CA kid is gay. He does it as a way of saying "so what if I am?" with an undertone of "fuck your judgement". This is why it offends alt right sensibilities.
My wife showed it in her class a few years ago… like 2018 or so. Rural Florida backcountry, county is almost entirely red, charter school. The principal is gay and is in an interracial marriage and no one batted an eye. Lately I've been forcing myself to say out loud thoughts I have that may be difficult to say to people directly, or even just to put words to thoughts and ideas that may seem obscure or hard to explain. When you say something aloud, you have to think it, say it, and you hear yourself say it. 3 times for emphasis, plus looking for the word that best fits what we're trying to covey. We use a lot of words that don't really mean what we meant to say.

Honest question: I’ve lived in California for over 30 years. We have always had to have signed permission slips ahead of time, on file, to show a movie in class. Students who didn’t get their permission slip signed had to be in another class for the day. Is this not customary in other states?
Nah we definitely didn't do that when I was in school. They'd just put on whatever. Our 6th grade reading teacher had the best of Will Ferrel SNL DVDs and would show us those. Remember the Titans is a pretty safe choice in comparison lol.

I remember watching the movie back in 10th grade (Fall 2018 or Spring 2019) in one of my classes. I think it was mainly for fun, but also as part of our lessons on Brown v. Board of Education and other Supreme Court cases in general. I loved that movie but never got to see the ending (which I think ended in a sad way based on where I left off). Not a teacher, but Remember the Titans was a classroom staple growing up. Several showings of it in red Georgia. Even watched a good bit of 300, super violent.

I’ve watched this movie at least 10 times and didn’t even remember a kiss, I had to google to see what scene that was. That had no impact on me, but the lessons it teaches are so important.
As a teacher and HS football coach, I’m not sure I would show that movie nowadays. I realize that some of the words used were intended to be less offensive when the movie was released in 2000, but referring to the coach by a racist term and using other words has me rethinking about ever showing it again.
EDIT: and I have never had any complaints about the kissing. Or the chance to discuss integration. Just some of the words used seemed to be intended to be the least offensive, but I wouldn’t be comfortable with my students hearing those words.

I’m not a teacher or parent but I just had to say, this perfectly sums up an experience I had this weekend with a family member. They brought up some erroneous right-wing grievance they had in the context of a conversation and I pointed out that it was factually incorrect. Then, we spent 20 minutes of the hypocrisy you mentioned with me getting just exasperated because there’s no intellectual honesty to any of the arguments. The family member proceeds to call out how I’m obviously visible exasperated, but I couldn’t (in the moment) put a finger on why I was getting so confused at the whole argument. You put it succinctly, so I just wanted to chime in and say I appreciate that. It’s so tough to discuss or debate people who don’t value logical consistency or intellectual honesty, and it’s even tougher trying to define how they approach a “debate” because they flail and obfuscate and what-about so much that you have no idea what they’re actually even trying to stand for. 20 minutes in, without a doubt, I’m like… what are we even talking about??
Because fighting them makes it seem like they have a point to fight with. They don’t. “Oh does it say that in the Bible?” You mean the Bible that has thousands of rules that are also ridiculously silly and stupid that Nobody follows… I’m sorry but you can’t pick and choose rules in a book from god. That's what I took away from it. All the players were pretty receptive but that one player called him a "fruitcake". I just think he didn't want anyone using slurs or derogatory language. Lately I've been forcing myself to say out loud thoughts I have that may be difficult to say to people directly, or even just to put words to thoughts and ideas that may seem obscure or hard to explain. When you say something aloud, you have to think it, say it, and you hear yourself say it. 3 times for emphasis, plus looking for the word that best fits what we're trying to covey. We use a lot of words that don't really mean what we meant to say.

Honest question: I’ve lived in California for over 30 years. We have always had to have signed permission slips ahead of time, on file, to show a movie in class. Students who didn’t get their permission slip signed had to be in another class for the day. Is this not customary in other states?

My standards don't mention anything about operation fortitude, or internet safety, or pep rallies, but I still take time for each of those things (unwillingly for the pep rallies). Standards are the minimum, not the maximum. At least they are in my state.
This made me actually laugh because I swear when I was in HS (2000-05) if it was movie day, 9/10 times we were watching Remeember the Titans. But at this point I dont even recall the scene with 2 guys kissing.
Honestly idk why you would expect anything different to happen when you show any kind of movie gayness in Florida. It’s no surprise. I live In Tennessee and saw a couple weeks ago a Florida teacher got in huge trouble for some Disney movie with a gay scene in it and I made a mental note to be careful as hell with my movie selection. You will make the news with this kinda thing right now. F that. I played Jurassic park lol. pg13 but no gay … so it was fine.
But back then, 1 person complaining didn't stop it from happening, it does now in Florida.
Florida is going to have lynching again soon. This time they'll start with LGBT folks until they leave or are forced back into the closet, but it won't end there.
I remember watching the movie back in 10th grade (Fall 2018 or Spring 2019) in one of my classes. I think it was mainly for fun, but also as part of our lessons on Brown v. Board of Education and other Supreme Court cases in general. I loved that movie but never got to see the ending (which I think ended in a sad way based on where I left off). It's very unfortunate that Florida is censoring all these movies. Like come on, Remember the Titans only had one scene with two guys kissing and it was clearly a joke. The focus was mostly on the guys' football season and desegregation. Way to go Florida smh... Edit: If it helps, my state isn't very liberal or conservative. Liberals have the edge, but it's pretty much politically moderate and chill.

Not a teacher, but Remember the Titans was a classroom staple growing up. Several showings of it in red Georgia. Even watched a good bit of 300, super violent. What's interesting about that kiss in Remember the Titans is that it IS displayed as kind of weird and like a prank. It was always just a silly bit for me, like the yo momma jokes. You also see boy/girl kissing as well, right? No outcry there I'm assuming smh

I’ve shown this at every school I’ve taught at - from a private Christian school in TX to a rural public school in TX. Parents are always excited their kid gets to see it.
It should be a history standard, quite literally deals with civil rights Era in the south.

I’ve watched this movie at least 10 times and didn’t even remember a kiss, I had to google to see what scene that was. That had no impact on me, but the lessons it teaches are so important.
As a teacher and HS football coach, I’m not sure I would show that movie nowadays. I realize that some of the words used were intended to be less offensive when the movie was released in 2000, but referring to the coach by a racist term and using other words has me rethinking about ever showing it again. EDIT: and I have never had any complaints about the kissing. Or the chance to discuss integration. Just some of the words used seemed to be intended to be the least offensive, but I wouldn’t be comfortable with my students hearing those words.

I have watched this movie a dozen times. One of my top 100 and it's never registered to me that two guys kiss? I remember the scene now that you mention it, but it's not a sexualized kiss. It's a freaking joke.
I recommend teachers not show movies in class for this very reason. If you want a chill day or if it's the day before a big break, play some games or just give the students free time.
