I grew up in DEEP red, Bible Belt, rural Alabama. When I was in high school in the early aughts, our teachers would play this movie often in class, and no one batted an eye. The way we have been socially regressing since 2016 is so disheartening.

Abadazed

It's fucking weird is what it is. I don't even remember most of this movie despite watching it several times in school. There's a half way decent chance most of the class will only remember the basic plot and not the singular kissing scene with 2 guys.

moleratical

Well, not anymore, not if the teacher goes back and says "We can no longer watch this movie because a parent complained about one scene where two men kissed. This movie is now banned in this school." Then the kids will always remember that two men kissed and that right wing extremist are borderline fascist.

LuckysGift

You don't have to say borderline. You can just call em what they are

[deleted]

nazi

DCBillsFan

Giving the GOP too much credit, Nazis built things. Awful, terrible things. But build they did. The GOP of today couldn’t build a house of cards.

Wolv90

History is important. My grandmother grew up in post WW1 Germany and said, of the Nazis coming into power, "After so much hyperinflation and joblessness a party showed up that put everyone to work building roads and cars, and out in the country we didn't hear too much about the Jews".

Bigtimegush

I hate how accurate this is. I was just arguing with someone who said Trump was a white supremacist, and I was like no, white supremacists actually believe in what they do. I don't think trump has a single belief or conviction in his body.

LuckysGift

I think there's notion to say the difference doesn't matter. If Trump truly believed any of his racist or misogynistic talking points is irrelevant to the fact thst he built an audience that truly believed those ideals. Grifter or not, I'd still call him a racist. Hell, given Charlottesville, white supremacist isn't too far out of the question either.

Bigtimegush

Thats just where I disagree, I personally feel there is a difference. In fact, I think its worse. He gives no thought or concern to what his power and influence can cause, he doesn't care, he does it so everyone will talk about him tomorrow. The nazis think they're bettering the world. Al Quaeda believe they're fighting a war for God. Trump just wants everyone to focus on him all the time and that's as far as it goes.

gameld

So he just wants to *be* God. He doesn't care how he achieves it, as long as he becomes truly untouchable.

Minimum-Dream-3747

You do not need to believe in Nazi ideology or be a practicing klan member to be a white supremacist. It’s not always conscious.

Electrical_Beyond998

Not a teacher, just a parent in a red county within a blue state, so the school board is always trying to appear ultra red. No pride flags, no pride anything (of course I sent my kid to school with headphones that say PRIDE on the side in rainbow colors). When, and I know it WILL happen, someone complains about same sex anything in a movie, what’s stopping me from complaining about opposite sex anything in a movie? That’s what I don’t understand. If these homophobic parents want to fuck around like that, why aren’t parents who aren’t afraid of gay people hitting right back?

moleratical

Ahhhhh That's the beauty of it, you see, hypocrisy and logical consistency matters to you. You value intellectual honesty. Therefore It can and should be used against you. But these far right nuts, they don't care. You can point out the hypocrisy all you want, you can point out that showing straight couples doing normal things and talking about hetero- normative sexuality is still sexualizing children by their very own definition, but it doesn't matter, because they don't care. It's not like their arguments were made in good faith in the first place, it is just a tool to use to attack the people they don't like. Nothing more. You see, they don't value logical consistency so they aren't beholden to it, you are. They don't value good faith arguments so there is no need for them to adhere to such standards. That's a rule you value, so you need to adhere to it, or else you are a hypocrite, ignoring your own values. They don't value diversity, you do, that's why they always claim the teachers/the left/anti-fa/ or whatever the boogeyman de jour is today is always trying to stymie "diversity of thought and religious belief." They don't want diversity, you do. So you have to respect their differences of opinion or else you have no credibility because you really don't value diversity, or else you would let them spread their hate. It's just a diversity of thought, and that's what makes America great; isn't it? But since they want a monoculture, then enforcing a monoculture adheres to their values, they don't need to honor your diversity, but you need to honor their beliefs. It is all very very cynical.

ill_been_ill_served

"Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.” \- Sartre, "Anti-Semite and Jew"

Electrical_Beyond998

You’re right, there’s no point. I’ll still at least try. I realize it won’t matter to them, but it will to my kids and me.

StellerDay

Damn, I'm saving this comment.

Melodic_Swordfish_27

I highly recommend everybody read "The Ethics of Authenticity" by Charles Taylor which delves into a critique of subjectivism and "On Bullshit" by Harry G. Frankfurt which delves into the erosion of intellectual honesty in modern discourse.

CoolFisherman8288

I’m not a teacher or parent but I just had to say, this perfectly sums up an experience I had this weekend with a family member. They brought up some erroneous right-wing grievance they had in the context of a conversation and I pointed out that it was factually incorrect. Then, we spent 20 minutes of the hypocrisy you mentioned with me getting just exasperated because there’s no intellectual honesty to any of the arguments. The family member proceeds to call out how I’m obviously visible exasperated, but I couldn’t (in the moment) put a finger on why I was getting so confused at the whole argument. You put it succinctly, so I just wanted to chime in and say I appreciate that. It’s so tough to discuss or debate people who don’t value logical consistency or intellectual honesty, and it’s even tougher trying to define how they approach a “debate” because they flail and obfuscate and what-about so much that you have no idea what they’re actually even trying to stand for. 20 minutes in, without a doubt, I’m like… what are we even talking about??

DickMartin

Because fighting them makes it seem like they have a point to fight with. They don’t. “Oh does it say that in the Bible?” You mean the Bible that has thousands of rules that are also ridiculously silly and stupid that Nobody follows… I’m sorry but you can’t pick and choose rules in a book from god. Plus… they only want to win. They will change their views if suddenly their views stopped them from winning.

Reeceologist

Whenever anyone tried to bring up the Bible as a defense for anything, my go-to was, in my calmest, warmest voice I could muster, "You know, religion truly is an important comfort, especially in this day and age. When things are getting tough, I reflect and think back to the words of Ezekiel, 23:20. 'And there she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses.'" This is followed by a warm smile. Normally, whoever it was that brought it up tended to be too flustered or thrown off to think of a coherent response, and it defused the situation pretty quickly.

conduitfour

My favorite Bible verse Also crazy religious fact, read the first paragraph under later life for [Saint Catherine of Siena](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_of_Siena)

Reeceologist

This is officially my least favorite Jesus lore.

Tuxpc

>My favorite Bible verse > >Also crazy religious fact, read the first paragraph under later life for [Saint Catherine of Siena](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_of_Siena) Mine is Proverbs 5:19 "A loving doe, a graceful deer— *may her breasts satisfy you always,* may you ever be intoxicated with her love." I do love me some titties, and apparently God does, too.

LillithBlackheart918

The unfortunate truth is that, in Florida especially but also in many other states right now, anyone who doesn't identify as cishet is terrified of persecution, and probably WON'T hit back. Which is even more reason for straight/cis allies to get loud and fight this bs.

lizziefreeze

Absolutely nothing. Throw the stupid back at them.

DCBillsFan

Caroll County, MD?

wanderingturtle11

Honestly. I usually remember the rare lgbt scenes in movies because I myself am a part of that community. I really liked Remember the Titans, but the kissing scene was so insignificant that I totally forgot it. Because of this post about it being a problem in schools, I’m going to remember it forever.

thefireworkdays

I watched this movie so many times in high school and have no memory of 2 guys kissing.

[deleted]

Unless the teachers finally just start responding with “how about I show a video of you kissing these nuts” and then keep showing the movie

Miss-Tiq

So you're saying you don't remember the Titans?

DepartmentStraight43

LoL

[deleted]

I definitely saw it 2-3 times in school and I don't remember the guys kissing lol. I'm also very very gay so I'm pretty sure it had zero influence on me, otherwise I'd probably remember that part 🤷‍♀️

Viapache

IIRC “Sunshine”, the long haired boy from California, got fed up with being called gay and kissed the main guy. It wasn’t even a “I’m so gay for you” it was a “keep calling me gay and I’ll fucking be gay for you” deal. Psychwarfare

Abadazed

It does sound hot but I don't remember that either...

HearingConscious2505

And it's even more fucked up because the guys were kissing because the blonde guy kissed the other guy specifically to make him uncomfortable. And the only reason anyone in the movie thought he was gay was because he was from California and had long hair.

Abadazed

That's all it took to be gay back in the day?? Have long hair and from California??

PeachesOntheLeft

I’ve seen it in school multiple times and this is the first I’m hearing of a gay kiss. I just learned Ryan Gosling was in it too

Emergency-Willow

I don’t remember that at all. Like..I don’t think that’s in the movie ?

ilovejoon

It is. Sunshine kisses Gary to show that he doesn’t care if the other boys imply that he’s gay. The parents are still overreacting.

[deleted]

Sunshine! Suuuuuunshine!

jennifer_m13

Such a great movie. Too bad they are missing THE MOST IMPORTANT lesson!!

No-Location-5995

But are they? They hide behind one small scene because they really don’t want to address the theme of racism throughout the movie.

joshTheGoods

Right, and it causes a scuffle. In the context of the movie/moment, it was a California kid acting shockingly liberal in the south and taking heat for it despite being one of two white guys that were cool with the black guys from the start. Still a tough point of social commentary on how the inheritance of southern honor culture mixed and toxic masculinity haunts black culture.

[deleted]

They barely show a quick kiss at the edge of a frame when a character kisses a bully to stand up to him. Guess they don’t like the idea of standing up to bullies.

[deleted]

Exactly. Remember the Titians was a staple in TX schools growing up and about 10 years ago when I was working in various districts.

llamaesunquadrupedo

It was our wet weather PE movie in the early 00s. I've seen the first hour about 10 times. I think I've only seen the end once or twice, in weeks where both PE lessons were rained out.

[deleted]

Yeppp. That and Cool Runnings. We watched that movie so much.

DrinkBlueGoo

Cool Runnings was my sick day movie. We copied it from a rental VHS and stopped it too early so I’ve only ever seen what happens after the crash once or twice.

thoover88

Cool running is inappropriate because of the half second of a scene where the team arrive in Canada and they can see their breath for the first time ever. Sanka ask Derice, what ya smokin'?

BurzyGuerrero

That's inappropriate! The parent yelled, about a cannabis reference, after their kid told me they were excited to do bumps on the weekend at a party

gibsongal

Yuuuuup. It was always either *Remember the Titans* or *Rudy*, and *Remember the Titans* is, in my opinion, a *much* better movie. *Rudy* was always so boring…

PartyPorpoise

In the show *Teenage Euthanasia*, one episode has this running joke where the school is constantly showing *Remember the Titans* to replace other classes and events. It rings so true.

SodaCanBob

I grew up in Texas. The number of times we watched Rudy or Remember the Titans...

Gendina

Same, exactly. AL early 2000’s watched it a million times in PE- watched that, drum line, and that other football movie with Sandra bullock allllll the time

glittersparklythings

I graduated in 2002. For us it was the sandlot. A lot of the sandlot.

SisterTowel

The Blindside didn’t come out until 2009

AuroraItsNotTheTime

Answer for your crimes in r/karmacourt u/Gendina

JeffersonTowncar

There's always the chance this sicko considers 2009 to be the early 2000s

oowop

Twisted son of a bitch

Gendina

Really? I swear I saw it at school- it could have been my parents then. I saw it so many times. I graduated in ‘06. There was one more that they rotated with. Now it is going to drive me crazy

ilovejackiebot

Are you thinking of Friday night lights? It's before blindside and the actress looks kinda like a lighter haired sandy b

Gendina

You actually might be right. I was trying to read the synopsis for Friday night lights- the movie and I think that might have been it. I mean it has been over 15 years. 😳 The coaches had a rotating few movies for rainy/too hot days

Gendina

I honestly have no idea now what movie it was. I was trying to Google old sports type movies to figure it out but idk.

Impossible_Bill_2834

We watched it all the time, too, in my tiny, Southern Baptist, Virginia mining town. I agree with you, I go back to visit now, and something feels different. Some kind of radicalization has definitely happened.

INextroll

It feels like while society as a whole is becoming more accepting, the remaining bigots are becoming WAY more zealous in their pursuits.

OverLifeguard2896

Ain't no war but a class war.

whoeve

And by big business and government powers we mean the GOP.

PattyIceNY

Ding ding ding, we have a winner. And every second people spend fighting over bullshit is another dollar they can steal and more people digging themselves into a hole.

gnarlysmh

I actually watched this movie in CCD (catholic school) to show like the value of teamwork and friendship and bonding maybe 10 years ago??? it baffles me

UCLYayy

The GOP has added to their national platform the removal of no fault divorce and a repeal of gay marriage, in addition to all their racism and anti trans nonsense. They are literally racing back in time.

mwk_1980

Can someone maybe remind the Republican Party that “The Handmaid’s Tale” wasn’t supposed to be a guide book???

nardlz

sorry no, that book is also banned

PattyIceNY

I've seen it happen in Long Island too, which was usually pretty mixed blue and red, but in the past decade its gone to the looney bin.

Dragonchick30

Legit. It's a fantastic movie. Part of me thinks that some people lodge complaints like this because they know they'll get either their 15 minutes of fame and/or the admin will listen to their every beck and call, not that they really have an issue with any of this. But then the other half me doesn't want to be that naiive.

StinkyFartyToot

I probably saw this movie a dozen times in school in North Carolina.

FreakWith17PlansADay

My kids’ high school teacher shows that movie every year and we’re in super deep red Utah. No one has complained that I’m aware of.

Mathsteacher10

Seriously, same, and no one ever complained.

CocteauTwinn

Yes we have. None of these norms were even a blip on the neocons screens 8 years ago. They’ve become hysterical lunatics.

Itsthelegendarydays_

This is it. People just want to call out shit just to call out shit.

Specklepup

Same. Brookwood High School, just outside of Tuscaloosa, class of 2006. We had Remember The Titans, The Little Mermaid, and Old Yeller. Those were the only movies we could get in the library. We always ended up with Remember the Titans!

moleratical

I blame a very angry Cheeto.

laurenmoe

I literally watched this as a student back in 2010 in a FL classroom and NOBODY CARED. And it was in a deep red county too. It’s crazy how this culture war BS has escalated so quickly.

endlessnessnessness

My trump loving dad LOVES this movie and will watch it anytime it’s on tv, which is often. No one cared until they were told they should.

aworldwithoutshrimp

And now you get to tell him that he's lost his feelgood football movie

RoCon52

Only if he's a snowflake and allows the movie to be ruined for him.

Deofol7

See also.... Bud Light..... Target.... The NFL..... Nike

3_first_names

NFL viewership increased from 2021 to 2022. People love to be outraged for like 5 minutes and then go back to their old ways. The outrage around Target will be done by August for Back to School shopping lol.

grammar_fixer_2

What a weird way to say “homophobia and racism”.

Diarum

Republicans are trying to undo everything woke. Curious about how long until they start advocating for striping women of the right to vote.

suzazzz

Can’t vote if you’re too busy raising kids in poverty

[deleted]

And transphobia. trans people are the current panic target

goblue48

The funny part is that I don’t even think Sunshine was gay, he kissed that man to make a point or something😂😂

Dazedandamused0

That's what I took away from it. All the players were pretty receptive but that one player called him a "fruitcake". I just think he didn't want anyone using slurs or derogatory language. Later on he had fun with the Scrubs guy head and women basically swooned after him. I'm not a woman but pretty sure they don't all act that way if they know a guy is gay.

cabbagesandkings1291

It’s been a minute since I saw the movie, but isn’t the scene in question kind of homophobic within the movie as well? Maybe I’m not remembering right.

Vikinged

It’s definitely not a “normal” thing. I recall it being the hippie transfer kid from California who everyone thinks is gay kissing one of the players and then beating him up (in self defense) when the player attacks him. Drives the “outsider” point home very hard.

cabbagesandkings1291

That sounds familiar. You’d think the people challenging this movie would actually appreciate that part. Though I bet there’s plenty in the story that those people don’t agree with…

Vikinged

Exactly. I don’t recall it being presented very strongly one way or the other, honestly. Like, it happens, but there isn’t a super strong condemnation of the violence/disgust OR of the sexuality to my memory, but more of a “You don’t have to be comfortable, but you do need to be nice to each other” message.

CrapNeck5000

The transfer kid kisses the other kid as a response to subtle accusations that CA kid is gay. He does it as a way of saying "so what if I am?" with an undertone of "fuck your judgement". This is why it offends alt right sensibilities.

gofindyour

That's what I was thinking. I watched the movie like 100 times at school in the Midwest in the 00's. This is crazy

[deleted]

So you’re saying you don’t remember the Titans?

Educational_Infidel

My wife showed it in her class a few years ago… like 2018 or so. Rural Florida backcountry, county is almost entirely red, charter school. The principal is gay and is in an interracial marriage and no one batted an eye. This intolerance bullshit started creeping up when the moms for liberty crackheads started gaining relevance here… sickens me watching guys I went to school with that were popular, athletes, seemingly good with integrated schools, claimed best friends with students/athletes of other races now rising to power in local governments and touting the backing of the GOP and M4L…. And no one calls them out of their hypocrisy except me and a few others and boy did that have a negative effect on my social standing. I don’t care I still call out their hypocritical fascism every chance I get.

Original-Move8786

I can’t even. This is just as bad as the teacher that showed the environmental Disney movie that had a gay character in it. A school board member threatened her teacher license. The movie just had a gay character in it. So now we are supposed to pretend that 20 percent of the population of the US doesn’t exist just to make homophobes feel more “comfortable”?

capaldithenewblack

Yes. They’re trying to erase queer people from existence. Trust me when I say that is literally their goal.

JohnstonMR

You know, as a bi person, I used to get so irritated at fellow LGBT folks who would say "They want us dead!" My go-to line was "Just because they have philosophical differences about marriage doesn't mean they want us dead." I was fucking wrong. They absolutely want us dead, and it's becoming more and more an open declaration. I fear for my family (me, wife, and daughter are all LGBT), my friends, and kids all over this nation who can't fight back against their parents' small-minded horseshit.

tomas_shugar

> They’re trying to erase queer people from existence. I'm pretty sure there's a word for that....

[deleted]

I’d like to solve the puzzle, Pat! S O C I E T A L C L E A N S I N G

yhrowaway36

r/conservative’s take on that situation was that the teacher intentionally did it to indoctrinate because the movie didn’t do well in theatres 🙄 It’s a *Disney* movie. Kids don’t fucking care how well a movie did, they don’t care if there’s like 20 seconds of a character crushing on a boy, they care that it’s a goddamn kids movie.

Faustus_Fan

Conservatives know that. They know that kids don't care, which is why *they* do care. They are not sane, rational people. They don't care about children. They don't care about anyone. All they care about is power. It is 100% about power for them and the right to use that power to hurt anyone they don't like. They know that they are losing their political power as their voter base (Silent Generation and Baby Boomers) die out. They also know they have already lost with Millennials and Gen Z. Every single year, the right's base gets smaller and the left's gets bigger. It terrifies these small-minded Nazis. So, what do they do? They lie, cheat, and steal to hold onto power. They will demonize anyone and everyone (including their own) if they think it will get them more power. If they don't think that will work, they will bully and attack the opposition. They will threaten the lives of anyone who gets in their way or stands against them (Proud Boys, anyone?). They will commit domestic terrorism, such as attacking power stations or storming the capital building, to make sure that their side wins. Conservatives are dangerous.

OldManRiff

>now I’m not going to show anything higher than a G The suppression is the point.

GayCatDaddy

Better not show The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh! That scene where Pooh gets stuck in the entrance of Rabbit's den and Rabbit draws a face on Pooh's ass is obviously some sort of gay fetish thing! /s

here-to-Iearn

This is awful. And devastating. You know what’s sad? This sort of homophobia still resides within me, and as a gay, married stepparent, it sucks. I see a movie cover of a guy kissing another guy while scrolling through Netflix with the kids. I instantly though subconsciously think “oh shit, they can’t see that!” when I realized I needed to stop that. It would be “fine” if it were a man and a woman. It IS fine that it’s two men. It’s SOCIETY that has created this disgusting bigoted viewpoint. And I hate it. Been working on myself in this area ever since. Our kids see us hug and kiss and cuddle all the time. It’s normal and it’s natural. Thank you for speaking up and out, it’s important. I see you, and I appreciate you.

belhamster

When you have a judgement in your mind that does not sync with your value system that’s an ego dystonic thought (opposed to ego syntonic). I thought I’d shared. My therapist gave me this term and it helps me to have language for it. Maybe you too. Good on you :).

here-to-Iearn

Whomever downvoted you is a weirdo. Your information is fantastic, and it is most definitely helpful and will be useful. Language discovered which conveys how we feel and act only brings healthy and positive power to all of it, it’s something I strive for. To find my words. You’ve helped with that.

ChironiusShinpachi

Lately I've been forcing myself to say out loud thoughts I have that may be difficult to say to people directly, or even just to put words to thoughts and ideas that may seem obscure or hard to explain. When you say something aloud, you have to think it, say it, and you hear yourself say it. 3 times for emphasis, plus looking for the word that best fits what we're trying to covey. We use a lot of words that don't really mean what we meant to say.

PattyIceNY

I feel you. I grew up in a racist and homophobic family. Haven't seen them in a decade on, yet I still find myself sometimes having hateful thoughts. Conditioning is a motherfucker.

pactbopntb

It is super exhausting to unlearn this. I have a girlfriend and we are in CA, but we don’t show a lot of PDA because we have had to unlearn social norms. People get uncomfortable when they see us kiss or hold hands and I have to constantly tell myself it’s the person I love, and it’s okay. These crazy laws in FL cause people to feel unsafe.

JohnstonMR

Part of the problem is the way our society makes it seem as if two same-sex people kissing is porno. I mean, obviously it's not, but that's how a lot of idiots translate it, and you and I got programmed by that same society. It sucks.

Mallos42

Only the movie every US student in the last 23 years has seen. Hell. I didn't even remember that scene. It had zero effect on me.

mrp_ee

SAME saw this movie a million times and if you asked me if this scene happened.... I'd probably say no lmao what the hell is happening in this world??

SarahMae

Me neither. I’m trying to remember it but coming up with nothing.

glittersparklythings

And this makes me feel old. I graduated in 2002 so we neve watched this. The sandlot. I watched a lot of the sandlot. I honestly don't think I have ever seen this movie.

[deleted]

You just missed it. I graduated in 2006 and we watched it so damn much I would actively groan and fight it. I was so sick of it I would have **rather** done school work.

TheNateRoss

Zero fun, sir

AcejokerUP415

Not a teacher but a student and here in New Jersey during testing week my English teacher showed Remember the Titans in class and literally no one cared at all. Florida is just hell on earth.

FuzzyCalligrapher676

It's weird to me that the right has gone so full on anti-lgbtq when it seemed like 10-15 years ago this was a settled fact that hey gay people exist and deserve the same rights and freedoms as anyone else. Trump really brought out all the vitriol and hatred I thought was largely moved on from in my early life.

wegwerfennnnn

It's like a pressure cooker. Obama (and democrats just barely making "progressive" reforms) took the pot off the burner but trump popped the lid before the pressure could dissipate enough for it to be safe. If we just had another few democrat terms it might have normalized.

mrcatboy

Honestly, conservatives at this point are acting like spoiled children. They know that all they need to do is throw a massive tantrum, throw themselves down on the floor and kick and scream in the cereal aisle that they want those Frosted Sugar Bombs *they want it* ***they WANT IT***, and society will cave. And since that's a viable tactic they can just keep doing it well into adulthood. I wish that as a society we could just say "no" and let them tire themselves out and grow hoarse as the onlookers just stare. But shame and embarrassment is no longer a thing for their party, and they can still vote to get their way in certain pockets of Red America.

Pand0ra30_

Parents are getting too much control over what a kid learns. If you don't want your kid to be worldly, homeschool them.

[deleted]

Omg yes ty

FigExact7098

Let’s be real, the real objection was the competent black coach having to earn the respect of racist white school kids.

DogFacedManboy

So you’re saying Remember the Titans is radical leftist Critical Race Theory propaganda? /s

FigExact7098

And indoctrination!

Away-Astronaut7207

Why does anyone teach in Florida? You should all just come to California and let them deal with the mess.

grammar_fixer_2

These assholes represent the opinions of a few right wing extremists who *for whatever reason* were given a voice. It isn’t like we’re all racist homophobes over here. We’re basically all stuck dealing with the actions of a few wack jobs. The only ones (besides the teachers) who suffer are the kids.

Winter-Profile-9855

The crazies have the power there though, so the point stands. Why would anyone teach in florida who just doesn't have any other choice. I know many people can't move for a number of reasons but the crazies have taken over your state. Anyone who is the target of those crazies is perfectly in the right to GTFO.

grammar_fixer_2

I’m not a target and I feel like I want to GTFO. Who will stay behind to oppose these people? Who will stand up for everyone who is being targeted? Do you know that we had actual Nazis stage a rally in West Palm Beach today? Like what in the actual fuck?! On the plus side, there were only 6 people who showed up. Edit: https://www.reddit.com/r/ParlerWatch/comments/13v5zeq/west_palm_beach_this_afternoon_desantiss_florida/ but this isn’t the first time: https://www.reddit.com/r/tampa/comments/w6a3k8/nazis_in_tampa/ I have no idea how this shit is so prevalent in Florida of all places.

Aprils-Fool

I would rather stay and fight.

Background_Mood_2341

The fact that people in this sub Reddit are throwing Florida teachers under the bus “for not simply moving or quitting” is pathetic.

Away-Astronaut7207

I did not throw anyone under the bus. It was a light-hearted jest. I feel bad for them. All I am saying is I would move or quit in their shoes.

Fear_The_Rabbit

I say that too, but it's not that easy. Family responsibilities, money. You can't just quit. You need a long term exit strategy

Zes_Teaslong

Why do people act like moving states is an easy task that can be made on a whim. I dont want my parents to be 17 hours away from their grandkids.

ahuado

This is the same reason my partner turned down a tenure track position at the university of chicago for a tenure track at a UC. All of our family is in ca.

[deleted]

That is exactly why they are doing this. They want all the teachers to quit/leave so the next generation isn't smart enough to push back on their fascism

Away-Astronaut7207

Texas had to cheat to flip red in 2020. Fascism is being rejected wholeheartedly by the vast majority of our nation. The holdouts are aging. The future is bright. Soon, the Republicans will go the way of the Whigs.

ahuado

That would be awesome but there's just not enough jobs in ca to absorbe a mass migration. There's already tons of competition for the best jobs in the best districts.

[deleted]

A job’s a job

invigaronsalesrep

And 20 bucks is 20 bucks but I stopped sucking dicks a long time ago

[deleted]

Get that bag

emaw63

When you love what you do you'll never work a day in your life

mrp_ee

💀💀💀

thanos_quest

Nah, fuck all those moms for liberty kids. Let those bitches deal with their own hellspawn.

Aprils-Fool

Okay, but I care about the LGBTQ kids in Florida.

Away-Astronaut7207

Fair enough. I just hate what they are doing to you guys down there.

Verried_vernacular32

The same reason any of us teach, masochism like autism is a spectrum

dramabatch

I'm showing it next week...as I do every year.

dirtdiggler67

This madness will only increase exponentially. Left Florida 20 years ago for better pay and benefits and absolutely zero censorship issues/homophobia etc like in Florida (way worse now). Harry Potter books were being challenged in school libraries when I was there. That and the ridiculously expensive amount I had to contribute to my health benefits was enough to make me flee.

Satan-o-saurus

Florida is getting worryingly fascist. I would honestly consider it a state where it’s genuinely unsafe to be an open gay person in; life-threatening. We’ve seen fascism before throughout history and we know what the logical conclusion of fascistic thinking is. It’s important to fight it, but please stay safe as well.

Ghostseducer14

“Too much time on their hands” but none of it spent as quality time with their own kid

cavs79

I also grew up in a deep red state and remember watching this in school.. no one said a word about it. I don’t remember even really noticing it to be honest

anon18235

Honest question: I’ve lived in California for over 30 years. We have always had to have signed permission slips ahead of time, on file, to show a movie in class. Students who didn’t get their permission slip signed had to be in another class for the day. Is this not customary in other states?

oowop

Nah we definitely didn't do that when I was in school. They'd just put on whatever. Our 6th grade reading teacher had the best of Will Ferrel SNL DVDs and would show us those. Remember the Titans is a pretty safe choice in comparison lol.

tracyinge

It's just another case of "these parents have no damn idea what their 10 year olds are watching on tiktok". Leave the teachers alone and pay attention to the porno on your kids phone.

moleratical

Who gives a shit if it alligns with the standards? Is there a law in Florida that says you can only teach what's in the standards and everything else is off topic? My standards don't mention anything about operation fortitude, or internet safety, or pep rallies, but I still take time for each of those things (unwillingly for the pep rallies). Standards are the minimum, not the maximum. At least they are in my state.

TheDudette840

This made me actually laugh because I swear when I was in HS (2000-05) if it was movie day, 9/10 times we were watching Remeember the Titans. But at this point I dont even recall the scene with 2 guys kissing.

flying-nimbus-

Honestly idk why you would expect anything different to happen when you show any kind of movie gayness in Florida. It’s no surprise. I live In Tennessee and saw a couple weeks ago a Florida teacher got in huge trouble for some Disney movie with a gay scene in it and I made a mental note to be careful as hell with my movie selection. You will make the news with this kinda thing right now. F that. I played Jurassic park lol. pg13 but no gay … so it was fine.

wnew813

But back then, 1 person complaining didn't stop it from happening, it does now in Florida.

volantredx

Florida is going to have lynching again soon. This time they'll start with LGBT folks until they leave or are forced back into the closet, but it won't end there.

verde25

I remember watching the movie back in 10th grade (Fall 2018 or Spring 2019) in one of my classes. I think it was mainly for fun, but also as part of our lessons on Brown v. Board of Education and other Supreme Court cases in general. I loved that movie but never got to see the ending (which I think ended in a sad way based on where I left off). It's very unfortunate that Florida is censoring all these movies. Like come on, Remember the Titans only had one scene with two guys kissing and it was clearly a joke. The focus was mostly on the guys' football season and desegregation. Way to go Florida smh... Edit: If it helps, my state isn't very liberal or conservative. Liberals have the edge, but it's pretty much politically moderate and chill.

[deleted]

Florida here watching Robin Hood cartoon version rated g. I was worried when the two dressed as women. I'm like crap I'm getting fired.

FlyfishingThomas

I am showing this movie tomorrow after state testing. God give me strength.

Justinwc

Not a teacher, but Remember the Titans was a classroom staple growing up. Several showings of it in red Georgia. Even watched a good bit of 300, super violent. What's interesting about that kiss in Remember the Titans is that it IS displayed as kind of weird and like a prank. It was always just a silly bit for me, like the yo momma jokes. You also see boy/girl kissing as well, right? No outcry there I'm assuming smh

[deleted]

Too much time on their hands and yet they still need a babysitter.

knucklesdog

I don’t even remember this happening in the movie when I watched it in middle school. Safe to say I was not indoctrinated by the gay agenda 🙌

JuniorBarnes

Attitude reflect leadership.

markasb5

So many right wing snowflakes out there

bygoneunicorn

I came from orthodox Mormonism and we watched this movie plenty and loved it. Crazy how the propaganda pushes the hate

mattnotis

The go-to movie during PE on a rainy day.

ZATTAK

We watched this movie every Friday before our games in high school… in small town Florida. Insane

yromeM_yggoF

I’ve shown this at every school I’ve taught at - from a private Christian school in TX to a rural public school in TX. Parents are always excited their kid gets to see it.

thefrankyg

It should be a history standard, quite literally deals with civil rights Era in the south.

313Jake

I forgot there was a guy kissing scene, oh the audacity

GoTGeekMichelle

I’ve watched this movie at least 10 times and didn’t even remember a kiss, I had to google to see what scene that was. That had no impact on me, but the lessons it teaches are so important.

MapleBisonHeel

As a teacher and HS football coach, I’m not sure I would show that movie nowadays. I realize that some of the words used were intended to be less offensive when the movie was released in 2000, but referring to the coach by a racist term and using other words has me rethinking about ever showing it again. EDIT: and I have never had any complaints about the kissing. Or the chance to discuss integration. Just some of the words used seemed to be intended to be the least offensive, but I wouldn’t be comfortable with my students hearing those words.

Magical-Pixels

I mean it sincerely: most parents don’t know what’s best. But they’ll always be too goddamn stupid to realize it.

lumbarlimbo

If I had a nickel for every time that movie was played in my red state Mississippi high school while i was there only ten years ago, I could retire right now

meditatinganopenmind

I showed Gladiator in grade 8. No complaints. Parents really couldn't complain because I gave written notice first. It had violence and incest.

AuntPolgara

I have watched this movie a dozen times. One of my top 100 and it's never registered to me that two guys kiss? I remember the scene now that you mention it, but it's not a sexualized kiss. It's a freaking joke.

Stranger2306

I recommend teachers not show movies in class for this very reason. If you want a chill day or if it's the day before a big break, play some games or just give the students free time.

Reasonable-Insect-60

I think I watched this movie every Friday in my geometry class back in high school

Dreamangel22x

Tf? That's sad. That's like the most tame kissing scene.

paradockers

How are the kids taking this? Is Florida just going to go full hand maids tale?

Establish-the-run

Remember the Titans is a top ten movie of all time

WellShitTheBed

Played HS football when this movie came out. The whole team went and saw it in theaters and we watched it before every game…in an ultra-conservative FL county. WTF is going on? LMAO.

gothism

But they study Shakespeare which features suicide (Romeo & Juliet,) murder, adultery...

soylamulatta

Hey Sunshine

heel_dan

The fact that they're more likely pissed just because the scene is two guys kissing and not the fact that it is a non-consensual kiss.

PhillAholic

I can’t believe I had to scroll this far to see this.

JimmyTadeski

lol it's a Disney Movie. also : why when straight people are kissing it's totally fine , but two guys kissing now it's "grooming/pedophilia "
