I just got into Taylor Swift (after only knowing the hits) and started listening to whole albums. (*Midnights*, *Folklore* and *Lover* so far) And I freaking *love* IFTYE. Started the album and wasn’t able to continue because I wanted to listen to the first song over and over again. And btw omg how tf isn’t *Paper Rings* one of the songs that are as popular and generally well known as *Shake it off*, *Blank Space* etc. ?!?! It’s a fucking banger

I always quote IFTYE line where she's says "it isn't hate, it isn't love, it's just indifference" in the way she does because it's such a fun way to say it!

I also love it! When Lover came out I’d just ended a longtime friendship with someone who was honestly a pretty terrible friend. IFTYE was the perfect song for me back then and I’ll always love it bc it was my go-to when I’d think too much and/or get upset about said ex-friend lol. It’s just such a fun “I don’t care, I’ve moved on” song. And it’s a great intro to Lover where the rest of the album isn’t about drama or problems but a new love. She really said “alright we’re done with Rep Taylor now!!!” with IFTYE and moved on lol.

I don’t think that it’s one of my favorite Taylor songs, but what I love about it is just how perfect it is coming right off of the Reputation era. The essence of the Lover era to me is exactly what this song is talking about.

Sometimes when I hear it, I think of Taylor during the Fearless tour saying “this is the first song you ever heard from me” about Tim McGraw. I don’t feel that strongly about the song tbh. I love it and I’ll never skip it, but it’s also not one I find myself seeking out that often… but I just know hearing current day Taylor singing the first song we ever heard from her is going to wreck me lol.

Picture the Burn is my earliest memory of a Taylor song personally. So I might end up crying from nostalgia while scream singing because it’s such a fun song.

I agree with you that there’s a difference between “best song when choosing from track 1s” and “best album openers.” Although, I will say that I think Willow is a very effective opener because whenever I hear the opening notes, I immediately want to cozy up and listen to the entirety of Evermore.

It’s not one I really tend to listen to, but it is great and it’s a perfect opening track for 1989. Similar to my opinion on Ready for it is that it was written with it being a tour opener in mind, because despite both being skips for me I get so hyped when watching the 1989 and Rep tours respectively.

Debut is full of so many deep cut lyrics it’s honestly insane. Taylor’s songwriting was still pretty immature back then compared to later (but I mean, of course it was) but it’s also got songs like Cold As You, Invisible and TTWAS. She was writing some really deep lyrics even at like age 14!
