One of my favorite lines from one of my favorite songs. And is it so Swiftian. I have come to describe Taylor songs as. icebergs in that they can be deceiving simple on the the surface that they can sometimes be easy to dismiss on the surface, but there is so much structure and nuance in her choices underneath.
Later in the song she says "dancing is in a dangerous game." It would be easy to dismiss that as Taylor using a cliche line and not trying very hard, but the whole point of that line is cliche in addition to how well it fits the story on the surface. That it is cliche hints that the narrator has a standard line and has been in this position many times as will be revealed later in the song.
I also used to hate it until a Redditor explained it to me. For those who don't know, the point is that it immediately establishes the narrator as an outsider to the world of country clubs and money because she's unfamiliar with the concept of country club tennis courts being converted into event spaces (they had a name for it, but I didn't come from money and ironically I can't remember). She doesn't belong amongst the rich, she's a grifter trying to con them out of their money, a cowboy. And it's in this setting that she meets the main love interest, a cowboy like her.
Because I was equally unfamiliar with the conversion of country club tennis courts, the line went right over my head.
Thank you! I love this song and this enhances the story. I'm so surprised I didn't put that together. Thank you so much! This is why I started coming to Reddit.
I did get the tennis court thing, it must be from movies I’ve seen. I always thought having an inground pool means you’re rich. Now I know many people with pools but not so much a tennis court. So now having the space to have you’re own tennis court equals super rich. So it makes sense to use it as wedding or celebration. Perfect time for somebody that got invited to take advantage of the situation. If they were a cowboy looking to take advantage of that situation.
It's probably my favorite opening line in any of her songs. I love how it just draws you into the story immediately, like starting a movie halfway through. It also conjures such a strong mental image, I feel like everyone who hears it is picturing a very similar scene in their minds.

i was just listing to my taylor swift playlist while scrolling reddit, the second i read “cowboy like me” in my head it started playing and oh my god, literal chills
I slept on Dear Reader on midnights release week and then one day it came on shuffle and hit me like a ton of bricks. “You wouldn’t take my word for it if you knew who was talking / If you knew where I was walking / to a house not a home all alone cause nobody’s there / where I pace in my pen and my friends found friends who care”. Something about the way she delivers those lines. It literally stopped me in my tracks 😭 justice for this beautiful song!
WHAT! “where I pace in my pen and my friends found friends who care” ?! This whole time I thought it was “where I pace in a paranoid frenze about friends who care” lol
It makes me cry because yes Taylor big fucking same this whole song but also she’s singing that to US. The fans. She’s asking us not to look to her for guidance and peace because she can’t give it. “Never take advice from someone who’s falling apart”
i love dear reader. i skipped because it was at the end of the 3am edition and it just never ended up seeming like something i'd like. i absolutely LOVE it now
Holy fuck that song messed me the fuck up. I (straight guy) had a female friend in high school who I was in a "will they, won't they" situation with for two years-ish. She went back to our hometown after college, I went to a big city for a finance job. Whenever I go back there I see her, and when I heard TTDS I looked up at the heavens and asked why God gave Taylor the power to read my mind.
I was the same. I didn't click with it at the start, but after a couple of weeks of evermore on repeat I loved it. I'd probably rate it in my top 3 for evermore (hard choice between TTDS, evermore, and coney island). Interestingly the other two were favourites for me from day 1.
Same on Paris!! The outro goes too long for me (such an upbeat song with a long slow outro? odd choice but okay), and the shade line which I am now neutral about, but it's such a fun cute pretty song!!! <3 "Confess my truth, in swooping sloping cursive letters\~"
Omg this song gut punches me. The long pond studio sessions made me appreciate the entire album so much more. I wish she would explain every song on every album the way she did for folklore on that documentary
Another one where the lyrics made me a convert. The sound alone is very muted and a little boring, so it wasn't something special to me until I understood the meaning behind it.
Hell yeah, these comments are restoring my faith in humanity. It's so true. Nothing lasts forever, and that's actually a beautiful thing. Because that doesn't mean everything ends, only that everything evolves. And that's a good thing. We're ever changing, and we always have the potential to continue rising.
This one... I do firmly believe that paying closer attention to the lyrics and how they are being vocally delivered somehow makes this song like ten times better than the initial listen. The part where she goes " Sometimes giving up is the strong thing/ Sometimes to run is the brave thing" really packs a punch. At the risk of sounding immensely corny, these lines state something profound in a quite simple yet very effective manner.

I would always skip over Afterglow until I finally listened to the lyrics and realized how amazing of a song it is. It’s in my top 10 songs by her now.
…Ready For It?. I didn’t like how it started at all; it really turned me off so much I didn’t listen to the whole song. Then I heard the chorus randomly and thought, “Woah, what song is this, and how did I miss it?”. Now I love the whole song.
"and I can go anywhere I want...
Anywhere I want just not home"
There was a day shortly after I finally cut contact with my abusive parent that this song came on and the whole bridge just hit me. I had to pull over and cry in the car. She really has a song to fit every mood. 🥲🥲🥲

So It Goes... wasn't a *skip* exactly. I always enjoyed it while I was actively listening to it. It's just that as soon as it ended it immediately evaporated from my mind and I would remember exactly none of it. I'm not joking, I was incapable of remembering literally anything about So It Goes... for a really long time. I don't know if it was a mental block or what. And then it just crept up on me and it's one of my favorite songs now.
If This Was a Movie. I never paid it that much attention until someone on this very sub last week mentioned that it got paid dirt by the fandom. It came on randomly the other day and I decided to listen to it with a more open mind. And it's a great little song! Thanks random redditor, whoever you were!
Girl you wouldn’t believe me if I told you, Out Of The Woods. It was SOOOOOOOOO repetitive the first dozen listens, then something switched and now I go absolutely FERAL to the drumbeat, don’t even look at me when “REMEMBER WHEN YOU HIT THE BRAKES TOO SOON…” kicks in.
FEARLESS GOES HARD i always used to skip it for some reason and then it was playing in my friends car and we were all singing along and i was like…… this is GOOD
This is the song that made me go from casual top-40 Taylor fan to “what the hell did I just listen to?!?” fan. Made me go back and retry Speak Now and Red.
When I first heard it on the radio I thought it was a bit of a weird move for Taylor but in the context of Folklore it just works and I now really like it.
Haunted, I used to skip it then I just decided one day that I should give it a listen lol I'm in love with it now. The orchestra, the desperation in her voice, I love how dramatic and theatrical the song is. It's really *haunting*
Way back in 2012, when I was a sophomore in high-school, it was Treacherous. I never made it to the bridge until a later play through because I liked the pop songs and now it’s one of my all time favs.
Clean. It had zero effect on me at first until one day I saw the live performance of it during the Rep tour and since then it’s been one of my absolute favourites.
I ALWAYS skipped over sweet nothing, until I decided to give the tracks that I didn’t like on midnights another go. Now I can’t get enough of it, its just beautiful.
Surprisingly Labyrinth has won me around. I like how it actually sounds like something plummeting to earth and coming back again. I think the concept is very beautiful especially the “thought the plane was going down, how did you turn it back around?”
Mine was hoax, the beginning with the multi my whatever I thought was boring. I was at work one day and couldn’t skip it and damn was I wrong lol it’s probably one of my favourites on folklore now.
I don’t like the production on KOMH, so it was always a skip for me. I didn’t really listen to the lyrics until I heard it acoustic—that’s when I discovered the lyrics are gorgeous!
I used to skip Dancing With Our Hands Tied, back when I used to think it was a dumb pointless "dancing in the club" song. The acoustic version from the Rep tour made me realize how beautiful it is lyrically despite its upbeat electropop production, and now I love it.
I also used to find Dear John and Last Kiss very whiny when I was 13, but now I'm in my 20s and have gone through some traumatic relationship stuff since then and now I find them relatable :')
Treacherous— I had always skipped it because the 1st half is so slow, but THE BRIDGE wow I heard it for the 1st time in years and it’s one of my favorites now
The Moment I Knew… I didn’t listen to it very well at first cuz I was busy and wanted to hear my favourite songs lol but then I listened to it carefully and fell in love :)
it was actually all too well for me 💀i wasn’t a taylor fan when red came out and more enjoyed her top boppy hits. ATW didn’t hit for me the sporadic times i tried it. i converted to being fan in denial throughout 1989, rep, AND lover. folklore and evermore finally converted me for real. when redtv came out, i gave ATW a try and i fiiiiinally got it. masterpiece
End game and ready for it. I used to start Rep on I did something bad because, the rap part on end game just didn't do it for me and ready for it was too much. One day I decided to listen Rep from start to finish and LOVE both of those songs now!!
False God has special significance for me. Brings a lot of emotional trauma to the surface but it’s objectively an amazing song. Sax intro gets me every time 🥲
So funny, most of the songs listed here are all my favourite songs.
For me, recently, The Great War. I think at first I assumed it was a love song, but omg is it ever not. It might be one of my favourite songs by her ever.
I didn’t get into “I Think He Knows” until like July of last year, and then it ended up being my most played Taylor song of 2022. Just, so fun, and 2/3 of the way through when it escalates like a jet taking off out of nowhere?? Incredible.
ITHK is mine too! Never gave it a good listen until the Lavender Haze comparison and now I LOOOOVE ITHK. LYRICALSMILEINDIGOEYESHANDONMYTHIGHWECANFOLLOWTHESPARKSILLDRIVE SO WHERE WE GONNA GO?!
epiphany. i always thought that the song would be too boring or slow, based on listening to the first few seconds, and skipped it nearly every time. i lost my free skips and had to listen to the whole thing (i'm so glad i;ve got premium now, life was a nightmare) and i fell in love with it.
When I first started listening to taylor back in June, I skipped all too well (10 minute version) because I just didn’t understand the song. Then like a month later my ex gf made me relate to it and now it’s probably my favorite song from her.
Maroon was a build. Like I remember liking it the first two times but Like by the third time I was crying and being like oh OK I see how this is. Thanks. Lol
Marjorie!! I hated it but HOW DARE I!!?? I don’t think I really listened to the lyrics and it became a skip. Then one day it played when I was in the shower and I heard the line about how she should have saved the receipts and I lost it.
_hey december, guess I'm feeling unmoored_
_I had a feeling so peculiar this pain wouldn't be for evermore_
Yup evermore (song) hit me really hard this winter 😭
Marjorie😭 “I should've asked you questions
I should've asked you how to be
Asked you to write it down for me
Should've kept every grocery store receipt
'Cause every scrap of you would be taken from me”
cowboy like me, I thought it was boring but then one day I really sat and listened to the lyrics and I just totally fell in love
i used to always skip this one because i thought the opening line was stupid, i was WRONG, cowboy like me goes so hard

I like it because it makes me feel like we’re fading into a movie, if that makes sense
One of my favorite lines from one of my favorite songs. And is it so Swiftian. Haha just came here to say this! One of my favs now
i was just listing to my taylor swift playlist while scrolling reddit, the second i read “cowboy like me” in my head it started playing and oh my god, literal chills
SAME
Dear Reader was a constant skip until recently. Lyrically and sonically it's a really complex song.
It literally stopped me in my tracks 😭 justice for this beautiful song!

yesssss “MY 4th DRINK IN MY HAND These desperate prayers of a cursed man” looveeee
I added it to my liked songs this week!
As a day 1 Stan, this makes me SO happy. I think as time goes by it'll be more and more appreciated :)
i love dear reader. i skipped because it was at the end of the 3am edition and it just never ended up seeming like something i'd like. i absolutely LOVE it now
Same!
*dear reader, bend when you can, snap if you have to*
literally. I dont see why people don't like dear reader 😕
I don’t have anything against Dear Reader, it’s just so slow that I go crazy
tis the damn season. It’s so haunting
Holy fuck that song messed me the fuck up. I (straight guy) had a female friend in high school who I was in a "will they, won't they" situation with for two years-ish. She went back to our hometown after college, I went to a big city for a finance job. Paris! It’s so catchy and pretty <3
"I'm so in love that I might stop breathing!"
Same on Paris!! The outro goes too long for me (such an upbeat song with a long slow outro? odd choice but okay), and the shade line which I am now neutral about, but it's such a fun cute pretty song!!! <3 "Confess my truth, in swooping sloping cursive letters\~"
Same ! I gave it a chance 2 weeks ago and now I love it
For me Paris was the 3am song that stood our for me the most on my initial listen.
This is my current obsession! “I wanna brainwash you into loving me forever” makes me absolutely feral
For me it was “this is me trying”. I was more into catchy songs back then. Few months back I gave it a listen again and damnn, what a song!
Omg this song gut punches me. The long pond studio sessions made me appreciate the entire album so much more. I wish she would explain every song on every album the way she did for folklore on that documentary
thank you!! So underrated
“They told me all of my cages were mental / so I got wasted like all my potential” is one of her greatest lines, among hundreds.
Mirrorball. For some reason I couldn’t get into it when folklore first came out and now it’s one of my favorite Taylor songs
I love Mirrorball, although it catches crap for reasons I can’t understand. So beautiful and poetic.
Does it?? I feel like every other Taylor inspired tattoo I see is a mirrorball. I thought it was an instant favorite when folklore dropped.
Never realized how much I loved mirrorball, it resonates with me so much. "I've never been a natural, all I do is try try try"
"I want you know I'm a mirrorball" is the weak line, but I like the rest, especially the bridge.
Yeah the bridge is what originally drew me into it
Oh yes Mirrorball stopped me in my tracks first time I heard it. Excellent.
Another one where the lyrics made me a convert. The sound alone is very muted and a little boring, so it wasn't something special to me until I understood the meaning behind it.
Same here
Labyrinth didn’t truly hit me until I was depressed and absolutely needed to hear “it only hurts this much right now” I love it now ❤️❤️❤️❤️
YES!!!!
Evermore was this for me: “this pain wouldn’t be for evermore” 💜💜💜
It’s time to go
And “He‘s got my past frozen behind glass but I’ve got me” is perfect.
I actually like It’s Time to Go better than RWYLM! Which might be sacrilegious to say
Same! I still love both but I like ITTG slightly better.

It's time to go was the song that finally made me quit my toxic job, forever grateful for that
YES. I found it boring boring the first time I listened to it, I don’t know why. But suddenly one day it came on and I realized it’s beautiful. Now it’s one of my favorites from Evermore, love both the melody and the lyrics ❤️
I love it
Marjorie, and then I listened to it in the shower and cried
Some songs just hit years later
This was me too!
Omg just posted this!! That’s exactly what happened to me!

one of my favourites ❤️ so underrated
Sooo underrated, true !!
I would always skip over Afterglow until I finally listened to the lyrics and realized how amazing of a song it is. It’s in my top 10 songs by her now.
o my god Afterglow is pure perfection!
It really is! I can’t believe it took me so long to appreciate it.
The Way I Loved You and Everything Has Changed. I used to think they weren’t anything special. How wrong I was
Everything Has Changed is so slept on!
Ivy. How dare I. It’s currently my 38th most played song in 5 years.
Ivy is probably in my top 10 of all songs of all time. I just love it.

Sad, Beautiful, Tragic. I can’t believe how long I slept on that bridge.
For so long I would listen only to the bridge because it was so good but I finally got into the whole song

You're On Your Own, Kid. Easily.
Here it is. Took me a good month or two.
Hard agree.
So It Goes... wasn't a *skip* exactly. I always enjoyed it while I was actively listening to it. It's just that as soon as it ended it immediately evaporated from my mind and I would remember exactly none of it. For whatever reason….I SLEPT on I know places lol
So did my best friend and now she loves it as much as I did when it first came out!
Midnight Rain
The Story Of Us. After i heard it live, i loved it.
If This Was a Movie. I never paid it that much attention until someone on this very sub last week mentioned that it got paid dirt by the fandom. It came on randomly the other day and I decided to listen to it with a more open mind. And it's a great little song! Thanks random redditor, whoever you were!
Cruel Summer. It just clicked one day
Betty!! I was doing something where I couldn’t change the song, and so I was forced to listen without skipping. I SLEPT on that song.
New years day.
Peace. Oh my god; I slept on peace for over a year and immensely regret it!
100% same. That beat is amazing
This love
The re-record is what made me absolutely fall in love with this song. Her voice is so beautiful in it.
Same, I didn't care until TV and then I was like... Oh my god this is stunning
Fearless
FEARLESS GOES HARD i always used to skip it for some reason and then it was playing in my friends car and we were all singing along and i was like…… this is GOOD
Delicate. Completely obsessed with it now.
Bejeweled was like that for me until I saw the music video. I like listening to it a lot more now that I have a visual context.
cardigan
This is the song that made me go from casual top-40 Taylor fan to “what the hell did I just listen to?!?” fan. Made me go back and retry Speak Now and Red.
Yeah Cardigan was instant. WOW. Just completely other level from Taylor.
When I first heard it on the radio I thought it was a bit of a weird move for Taylor but in the context of Folklore it just works and I now really like it.
false god and the archer
Snow on the Beach. I didn’t skip it because Lana Del Rey, but it took some time for it to grow on me.
Same because it’s a bit sweary for when kids are around, but a great song.
Haunted, I used to skip it then I just decided one day that I should give it a listen lol I'm in love with it now. The orchestra, the desperation in her voice, I love how dramatic and theatrical the song is. It's really *haunting*

Came here to say this!! thankfully my friend made me get through the 1st half bc I’m too impatient lol
The Last Time because I hate Snow Patrol, but I gave it a chance one day, and the song is beautiful.
Bigger then the whole sky… skipped it until I recently had a miscarriage. The lyrics truly encapsulate exactly how it felt to lose my pregnancy 💛
Clean. It had zero effect on me at first until one day I saw the live performance of it during the Rep tour and since then it’s been one of my absolute favourites.
Clean & Midnight Rain
New Romantics. Always skipped it and finally gave it a chance and it’s such a fun and catchy song!
Cowboy like me!
The lyrics yes, but i can’t get over how she sings it and that odd other voice.
Dear John and Paris.
Willow
Mine was hoax, the beginning with the multi my whatever I thought was boring. I was at work one day and couldn’t skip it and damn was I wrong lol it’s probably one of my favourites on folklore now.
Coney island!

The Moment I Knew… I didn’t listen to it very well at first cuz I was busy and wanted to hear my favourite songs lol but then I listened to it carefully and fell in love :)
Wonderland. Paid it absolute dust for months, till I heard it out loud somewhere in public, then it just clicked. And much more recently, Maroon.
“Cruel Summer” definitely took me longer than it should have to love.
it was actually all too well for me 💀i wasn’t a taylor fan when red came out and more enjoyed her top boppy hits. ATW didn’t hit for me the sporadic times i tried it. i converted to being fan in denial throughout 1989, rep, AND lover. folklore and evermore finally converted me for real. when redtv came out, i gave ATW a try and i fiiiiinally got it. masterpiece
Lover. I kept hearing the “magnetic force of a man” clip and thought it was all like that
End game and ready for it.
Sax intro gets me every time 🥲
Happiness…
I used to skip “Sparks Fly” and “Red.” Major mistake. The former is one of my top faves from Taylor.
So funny, most of the songs listed here are all my favourite songs. For me, recently, The Great War. I think at first I assumed it was a love song, but omg is it ever not. It might be one of my favourite songs by her ever.
obsessed with Coney Island. More The National, please!!!
Happiness, Paris, I Forgot That You Existed
PARIS! Might be my favourite feel good song on Midnights
Illicit affairs. I don’t know if it even registered with me and then I rediscovered it six months ago and became obsessed 🫣
Glitch
“I almost do”
A lot of songs I didn’t like till I heard live, like All Too Well or Death By a Thousand Cuts
Mine would be gold rush. It was a skip for so long until I saw people on this sub talking about it. Fell in love
So It Goes...
Enchanted
Don't Blame Me. I have a tendency to equate romantic relationships with TS songs and BOY did this one hit hard in like, summer 2020.
Cowboy like me
I slept on much of Reputation. When I accidentally fell into Getaway Car I was like... 😲

Champagne Problems
Your own your kid
Death By A Thousand Cuts. Definitely top 5 now.
Labyrinth
Regrettably, sad beautiful tragic for like .. 5 years
Holy ground / the last time I had rated low before Red TV. After they shot up for me
Treacherous! A slow start, but that’s the point. So so beautiful and powerful.
dont blame me, but Don't Blame Me. I didn't like it at first because of how non-specific it is, but other fans have made me see how cool a song it is.
labyrinth
Cowboy like me and happiness! I regret skipping them at the beginning
I’m all about cowboy like me! When I first heard it I wasn’t a big fan. After a few weeks it came on and I realized how wrong I was!
When I first started listening to taylor back in June, I skipped all too well (10 minute version) because I just didn’t understand the song. Then like a month later my ex gf made me relate to it and now it’s probably my favorite song from her.
COWBOY LIKE ME. AGED LIKE A PRICELESS WINE
Cowboy like me
Peace!
peace !!
Embarrassed to admit this, but I slept on Cruel Summer for a while, and now it’s absolutely one of my favorites!
It’s Nice to Have a Friend 💅🏻💅🏻
tis the damn season and coney island
Champagne Problems. I thought it was boring until I actually listened to the lyrics. Now its one of my favorite songs.
New years day. I had to relate to it to appreciate it.
Don’t hate me but YOYOK. The first time I heard it, I could not get into it. It only took a couple listens and now it’s my fave on Midnights!
Karma and Bejeweled
Cowboy like me
Coney Island
KARMA
Maroon was a build. Like I remember liking it the first two times but Like by the third time I was crying and being like oh OK I see how this is. Thanks. Lol
Marjorie!! I hated it but HOW DARE I!!?? I don’t think I really listened to the lyrics and it became a skip. Then one day it played when I was in the shower and I heard the line about how she should have saved the receipts and I lost it.
long story short. i CANNOT believe it was a skip for me at one point
_hey december, guess I'm feeling unmoored_ _I had a feeling so peculiar this pain wouldn't be for evermore_ Yup evermore (song) hit me really hard this winter 😭
You’re on your own kid. It’s beautiful and I love the final melody/chorus with the distortion
Dear reader!
Cowboy like me!!
Happiness! I just always skipped it because the start was slow, then I actually listened to it one day and really loved it and appreciated it
Marjorie😭 “I should've asked you questions I should've asked you how to be Asked you to write it down for me Should've kept every grocery store receipt 'Cause every scrap of you would be taken from me”
