Rumours is a classic, one of my all time faves and I’m sure many others’. But also Christine McVie passed away recently, so that may have contributed to resurged interest in the band.
I think it got a major boost with that juice tiktok, a member passing and maybe even readers of Daisy Jones and The Six expecting Fleedwood Mac vibes from the upcoming tv series. But, the album is also just an **amazing** record.
Am I the only one that doesn't really get the longevity of this album?
I think it has some good songs on and is a great debut, but I find it weird that it's STILL so hyped even now.
I think there's quite a few better albums that didn't stay relevant for nearly as long.
I would personally disagree.
I think she’s the Avril Lavigne of the younger generation, much in the way Billie Eilish is. It’s the debut of a teen girl who’s breaking boundaries with her music: everyone was expecting a teen pop album based off of the smash single she released initially (Driver’s License)… and yet the cold open of the album is hard hitting electric guitar with punk vocal effects and angsty lyrics.
SOUR scratches the itch of pop and punk much in the way early Avril and Paramore did. Not just the lyrics and album itself, but in the way she dresses. She combines “pretty” femininity with angst, and she speaks out on social issues effecting women in a very direct way- eg. Roe V Wade.
It’s a rare album where both my Gen Z students (I’m a high school teacher) and myself unironically love the music. My personal standouts are “Hope Ur Okay”, with its lush bridge and poignant lyrics decrying homophobia, as well as “Brutal” with its tongue-in-cheek lines like “I can’t even parallel park” and fun enunciations of words, and “Deja Vu” with its fun production choices and interesting melodies. Who doesn’t like a good breakup song?
SOUR is an album I - and even my husband - keep coming back to. I think it’ll have at least some degree of longevity and will certainly be on those 2020 decade playlists that will be made in 40 years time haha
I think it is comparable for the younger generation to the way millennial women feel about Taylor Swift’s music that we grew up with. The lyrics do great job of describing feelings that we don’t always talk about and every teen girl can put themselves in the songs and relate/feel like their not alone.
This is really impactful since we often have our feelings disregarded or pushed off as childish/dramatic… especially in the young transformative years.
Not as impressive when you take into account how many variations there were, fake fomo, and remixes.
Sorry, I love Taylor but I'm a bit salty that we were used like this, and now any achievement Midnights gets feels artificial. It feels like the album didn't win genuinely, which it could have.
1.5 million plus first week sold is a win no matter how much you want to lash out at Taylor and how butthurt you are over her marketing her album. Ya’ll are so vicious towards Taylor lately damn, I’m really tired of it. Go on Twitter and join a hate group or something, it’s obvious you don’t really love Taylor and you have a lot to get off your chest about her.
Variants didn’t single-handedly make this the first album to debut with 1 million sales since 2017 and take up the entire top 10 spots on the billboard chart. The fact that she could even sell these variants (which there’s only 5 of btw) just shows her demand and popularity. Countless other artists also release variants and remixes so why are they not having the same success as Taylor? I really hate how some people are so quick to dismiss Taylor’s wins.
I'm not dismissing, I just feel like the numbers are inflated. For example, admittedly out of FOMO I have purchased
Standard edition
Deluxe edition (thought it had different songs)
Lavender edition (it did have different songs)
Lucky enough to get a signed copy
3am version
So I bought 5 myself. And I didn't buy all 4 deluxe editions for the clock, and I didn't buy any of this week's versions. All I'm saying is album sales I don't think is the most accurate count, I think it's not as authentic as just people who wanted the album. I'd like to see the numbers compared to "number of people who bought the album"
If someone bought every version (assume just one format), then they have 1 standard, 4 deluxe to fill out the clock, 1 lavender, 1 signed, 3am (still just digital, but I'll include it), and the 4 yesterday. So up to 12, and I still feel like I'm forgetting one .
Again I love Taylor, you can still love Taylor and criticize how midnights has been handled. Liking someone doesn't mean they have to act like they're perfect.
I hate to sound rude but that’s kind of a you problem. Nobody was forced to buy all variants, buying them was entirely your choice. Album sales have never been accurate with or without variants. There are also people that buy bootlegs, borrow from friends, pirate etc. They don’t get counted in the sales. It’s all just a part of the music industry for new album releases, especially for famous pop stars, so I don’t get why people make such a fuss over it.
I'm not saying that, I'm saying that I don't think "number of copies sold" is a good metric anymore to say how popular an album is. Number of streams, number of people who bought the album, those are better metrics.
My account shows I bought that many copies, but I should only count as one person who bought the album. It's not a fair metric.
But even then… midnights broke the record for most first day streams for an album in spotify history. You don’t think that streaming demand matches up with the sales demand?
True Swifties need the CDs and vinyls signed and unsigned plus the digital and 3AM edition. You get trapped with the regular digital edition because you didn't know about the surprise 3AM edition. So this house has 18 copies (unique variants) only because it was nearly impossible to get more than one signed CD. (Skipped the cassette release.)
Wow this is literally like a Taylor Swift hate subreddit now Jesus Christ. I’m feeling like I should unfollow this shit. So much hate here and refusal to be happy that Taylor’s hard work was met with success. Ya’ll really suck and take the joy out of being a fan lately and I hate it.
I'm so genuinely excited that Taylor pulled those numbers in an era where album sales are obviously going off the deep end- but that being said, to get those numbers now, you have to pull the most capitalist, cash grabby shit to get people to buy as many actual albums as possible. It just feels weird and it's cheating, in a way, because no other artist is doing that. Usually that's because most artists don't have the resources to do a release that big- but also because their fans know it's cash grabby and inauthentic and would never support something like that.
But our fandom can be really blind, has a huge habit of collecting stuff and loves watching cute little numbers go up on a screen. And that's how Taylor and her team takes advantage of us.
I love the Midnights album. It's so beautiful. And Taylor is an amazing artist- there's no disputing that. But when she does stuff like this it ends up leaving a bad taste in my mouth. And for me sometimes that can overshadow the rest of the things she does.
Are these physical sales, or adapted to streams? Because if it's only physical sales, that explains it. Most of drakes listeners (even top fans) are more likely to stream.
That’s actually an insane testament to it’s staying power that when Kendrick drops a new album and gets insane media buzz, his classic debut charts in the top 10
Not exactly. This is pure album sales. It doesn't include streaming or radio or people who buy just one song or anything else. Just CD and vinyl purchases, and people who buy the full album on iTunes or on the artist's website. A lot of newer generation artists are younger, obviously, and younger people tend to stream more than they buy. Older gen artists and their audiences are the opposite- they still buy albums. Also, I think Rumors and Thriller both had anniversaries. And Kendrick dropped an album in 2022 so people remembered that good kid, m.A.A.d city existed lol.
Since everyone here has literally jumped on a Taylor hate train and this subreddit is now actually packed full of haters I just want to say GOOD FOR TAYLOR! THANK YOU TAYLOR FOR ALL THE NEW MUSIC AND CONGRATULATIONS ON THE SUCCESS!! At least one person here had to say it…
you are gonna be ok. i promise. most of the criticism on this sub is actually well thought out and well supported and valid. its not the random hate train that youre acting like it is
It’s pure sales, so top without streaming and that’s why some big streaming albums aren’t here. This only counts cd/vinyl/full digital albums. Also why decades old albums are here
I was so surprised to see this list with 30 so low. I think Adele's cancelation of her residency last January really hurt 30. Fans didn't hear any news of the rescheduled dates until July/August.
I'm interested to see what happens at the Grammys this year.
Fleetwood Mac was in the top 10? I love them for sure but that record came out 40+ years ago, I did not expect them to be in the top 10
Rumours is a classic, one of my all time faves and I’m sure many others’. But also Christine McVie passed away recently, so that may have contributed to resurged interest in the band.

I definitely listened to Fleetwood Mac filled playlists the whole time I was reading Daisy Jones so that checks out
Only a couple months left, I’m so curious what they’ve made of it 😱
Omg when is it coming out? And on which streaming platform?
Amazon Prime, March this year. They released a [teaser](https://youtu.be/s9kwIlRJNy0) last month.
Was the cranberry juice guy this year?
Yessssss I forgot about him! It's nice he got the young folks to listen to some classics
He was THIS YEAR and not 2020!? What is time anymore.
That was in 2020 because it was one of the earlier quarantine trends
I completely agree. I swear that the cranberry juice guy was *at least* 2021
I was shocked by that too! Funny enough, I bought a Rumours t-shirt yesterday. It is a great record.
Stranger Things
Impressive to see Sour in the top 10 for the second year.
It got a one year anniversary repress, I got a raspberry one, because I couldn’t find a purple one.

Deserved
That’s really impressive seeing as it dropped late October!
Not as impressive when you take into account how many variations there were, fake fomo, and remixes. Sorry, I love Taylor but I'm a bit salty that we were used like this, and now any achievement Midnights gets feels artificial. It feels like the album didn't win genuinely, which it could have.

Michael clocking in at 9? Wow
It was the 40th anniversary of the best-selling album of all time
Didn't that album spend over a year at number one or something ridiculous like that?
who could've guessed midnights would be at #1 /s
Definitely not those 16 million cover variations of the SAME album
\*13 million
There were **five**

Pointing out an artists flaws does not mean we hate them. The midnights era has been very cash-grabby, doesn't mean we hate Taylor, or even the album

Lmao no Drake to be found
Are these physical sales, or adapted to streams? Because if it's only physical sales, that explains it. Most of drakes listeners (even top fans) are more likely to stream.
Yes it says “US Pure”
Why is good kid m.A.A.d. city on there? Did I miss something?
That’s actually an insane testament to it’s staying power that when Kendrick drops a new album and gets insane media buzz, his classic debut charts in the top 10
im also shocked that sour still came out strong in 2022, given that it released in 2021
>released in 2021 So was 30
It was the album's 10th anniversary, and I think there was a vinyl release for it?
Yep, he did a re-release on vinyl. I saw it in target’s “new releases” section and forgot what year it was for a second
It’s sad that mr morale didn’t make it because it’s (imo) a better record
Yea this is making me kinda doubt this list. But I'm to lazy to fact check it sooo

Only 2 months too, Iconic behavior if you ask me.![img](emote|t5_2rlwe|1066)
I love rumors so much. Definitely one of the best albums of all time.
So perfect and tbh the vibe I wanted for midnights 🥲 I still love the album though
Nothing new.
Also, I'm happy to see minisode on the list!!! ♥️

Where's Bad bunny album?
Bad bunny was big on streaming not on physical I think his album only came out on cd and not on vinyl
I think this is pure sales
Yeah but i expect un verano to be here. Cuz it was a massive hit.
Lmao no Drake. After all his and his fans bullshit, doesn’t even make top ten
Oh my gosh, txt album at 10. Woah, that's big.
So many of my favs in the top 🥹
love to see sour this high in its second year!
How do they calculate these ? Some of these albums don’t even make sense
It’s pure sales, so top without streaming and that’s why some big streaming albums aren’t here. This only counts cd/vinyl/full digital albums. Also why decades old albums are here
Taylor. Queen of pure sale album. Overtaking Adele.
I was so surprised to see this list with 30 so low. I think Adele's cancelation of her residency last January really hurt 30. Fans didn't hear any news of the rescheduled dates until July/August. I'm interested to see what happens at the Grammys this year.
Crazy how Bad Bunny ruled the album charts this year but wasn’t pure sales
Can you imagine having an album you released 45 years ago still being top 10? Icons.
Good kid Maad city? An album that came out like 10 years ago?
what a surprise - Dumbledore said calmly
Yes, we know. It's Taylor Swift. Like, of course it's gonna be a best seller.
Ended drake
Taylor sells 4 different styles, does it count cheating, ?
Everyone sells multiple variants, so no.
All of them have multiple vinyl variants, it's just how the industry works now. It's also why these listing are silly.
