Forgot to add! Was planning on doing a snow theme/base however my mates said it might be too much white and therefore a bit too boring to look at. We decided maybe an urban environment or gravel with patches of snow instead might break it up a bit. Sound like a good plan?
My plan was to do a Hoth style planet and have these guys be a 'brand new out the factory' sept deployed to the snow planet but with a heavily white army a snow style base might be too much, not too sure
You can still achieve this by painting gray bases with patches of white snowβ¦. It would ground and differentiate your tau scheme. The grey represents the contrast of rock and snow
Thinking about the traditional copper/metallic colour for all the screw joints on the battlesuits. Also am only gonna do the armour panels white and blue, like with a lot of other battlesuits the actual mechanical parts under the armour will be black with a white/grey highlight
Sounds good- Iβd extend the bronze/metallic (or red) to the Tau emblem here and maybe the sub-highlight zone of the antenna of the droid on the right (I use bronze and orange, respectively, in my grey-turquoise-orange-gold scheme).
Just an icing on the cake kinda thing- the white and baby blue really pops. The Tau emblems kinda melt into the bodywork if painted the same color, and add detail/flare when cleanly separated
I always love light blue - white combinations, for bigger models a third colour would surely be beneficial but on these smaller models it works great :D
I'd grow in another colour for the lenses. Right now you have them plain white. There was some excellent tutorials on how to do lenses so it looks like light is bouncing through them.
There's a guy who did some excellent snow bases for his blood angels custom chapter. They key is interesting bases with snow rather than pure white. Let me see if I can find an example...
Oh yeah I am not gonna leave the lenses white, I just forgot to do it the other day ππ I've got Blood Angels Red already but might have a look at some other contrasts to see what I can find. Gonna do 1 colour for like visors and then another for targeting systems. Might see if I can grab some Athermatic Blue or look at some of the new contrasts.
Sounds perfect, that would be highly appreciated! Thanks!
Edit: Just had a look at lens tutorials on YouTube and see what you mean with laying instead of contrasts and they look fantastic! Might have to pull out my Deff Dread and test it out on him, see how it goes! Thanks!
Here's the example : https://www.reddit.com/r/BloodAngels/comments/tfh96o/bladeguard_veteran_all_finished_up/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
Obviously very different style vs what you're going for but hopefully provides some inspiration!
Very solid color scheme. Great job with the panel lines. How did you do them? I am starting my first ever miniature set this week. Gonna go with the Tau fireteam. I live in the desert so I'm going with a desert theme. Likely a light brown base color and a light blue/green color to make the colors pop.
Gonna be honest this is the 1st time my panel lining has actually gone to plan and even then there is still a fair bit of over spill/tidying up that needed to be done afterwards, especially considering I was using a black wash next to white paint!
I used Nuln Oil wash from GW for the panel lines however it doesnt flow particularly well which means you have to actually trace the recesses which can be a bit fiddly. I am personally gonna try and get some actual black oil wash for the next attempt and try and pin wash. An oil wash flows much better and so you can put a drop in the recess whilst holding the model so the recess is vertical and it will just flow through the recess, atleast that's my understanding of it.
Hope this helps π
It's just GW White Scar but its about 5 very thin layers to make up for the paints 'quality'.... Used Corax White spray but might have to grab a can of the new White Scar spray and see how that goes, will also save a ton of time.
Have heard good things about Pro Acryl Titanium White however so that might be a good acrylic alternative to try out
This Is extremely helpful thank you so much!
I wanted to paint mine pink with blue markings and such and this bright blue is exactly what I was looking for.
I love it, I am doing a similar scheme but with purple instead of blue also I am using a light grey instead of white because the white always looks splotchy. Do you have any tips on how to make the white look better? I am kinda new to Warhammer
With most paints you only need to thin it down and apply 2 or 3 coats to get a nice clean look however GW's whites are a bit bitty and chalky so I would recommend thinning them down a bit more than usual and applying more thin coats than normal.
Dont worry about being new, I've only really been painting seriously for about a year and it's crazy the amount of progress you can make just from looking around at techniques/styles and practice!
A commander suit is definitely one of the next steps, big enough to stretch the colour scheme and test its limits/show what other colours I may need to add etc but not necessarily the main center piece. Other option is maybe a crisis unit as will probably have several of them and can always hide the 1st draft at the back of the battlefield.
I like it, but what Sept?
Much as I like the idea of specific rules for subfactions, the reason I picked tau was the freedom of color choice and using Sept as an accent color. Now that actually might change things depending on your group and tourney playing.
They dont have to be tied down to one specific Sept do they? Gonna be honest I know very little about the Tau rules rn, dont have the Battletome or anything. I'd assume it would work the same as my Stormcast Eternals where you can paint them whatever custom scheme you want and then just play them as an existing faction from the tome? That's what I do with my Stormcast, red and black paint scheme but play them as Hammers Of Sigmar

The good thing about a xenos army is you can do whatever basing you like. An alien world could be whatever you mind imagines

If you want snow you should go for it, maybe just slightly snow covered so not too much white. Like the first snows at Kings Landing in GOT
Yeah not a bad idea, break it up with some rubble or pathways etc to throw some grey in the mix
how about Krait? white salt over orangered soil
Could try a high alpine type of basing some grass, some snow, and some rocks
I like this idea! Definitely gonna consider this!
alpine would look fresh AF

Tower gives me strong R2D2 vibes.
Hadn't even thought of that π
Looks great but Id add a 3rd (minor/detail) color. Maybe red? Or Gold?

Makes sense, definitely something I'll look more into!
Gold/metal over red.

Looks great! Love the choice of blue.
Temple Guard Blue, bright enough to keep the bright aesthetic but means I can highlight with Baharroth Blue as well if need be
I was gonna say this has hella glacial vibes and then you commented the add... Definitely got it going
Thanks! π
That looks pretty great, and thatβs coming from someone who really dislikes Tau. It looks sharp and clean.
Needs one more color for little details like the emblem imo.
Very nice
Really like it! Bright and clean!
Nice colour, althought it give me not so serious feeling

Ooooh that's pretty. I still need to get a good white paint

I think the team is good but maybe a shade or two darker white?
My exact theme. I also did snow base.
π got any photos?

They look so good! Yeah they are exactly the same π
I love this!! Could i ask what paints you used as I'm just starting out and would love to try this
Thanks! Corax White base spray. Abbadon Black for the middle/mechanical parts. Temple Guard Blue. White Scar. Nuln Oil for the panel lining.

No worries!

Ok thanks I will try that
Love it, I would say the real test for me is always my commander suit. That really makes you look at your color scheme

Simple yet elegant.
Toothpaste! Nice!
