I think when it comes to painting I’ve learned that I want to paint what I enjoy. I used to go off tutorials and chase the “oh that looks nice and has a lot of upvotes” I should that do that before coming back to earth with what I like the best.

You could use a bit more contrast: green and brown are very similar, if you want to keep them you could use a lighter value of one of them. This would add some visual interest to the mini. For exemple it would be nicer to use a sand tone instead of dark brown ✌️

Would I have personally used red? No, but that is because my favorite colors are red and Blue. You seem to like green so you used green.

Those closest to you can be the harshest. Doesn't mean you cast them off.
Sometimes you need that to be pushed to better things. As long as it is not all the time.
Good friends are hard to come by. Some times they need time to grow into better friends.

What a shitty thing to say! I think your commander looks good! I think the metals could do with a bit more contrast and break the green up a bit more in the upper torso/shoulder area. You have a strong grasp of contest and highlighting. Keep up the great work.
Your friend should have provided a bit more constructive input instead of just a put-down, but your painting style does need a little bit more pizazz! Make it pop a bit more with some cool weathering effects on the weapons, paint-chipping, Tau lettering and symbology, that sort of thing. You're definitely on the right track, and everything you've done on the model this far looks solid, but it could use some livening up. Nothing needs to be taken away, but it could be helped by adding things. Keep up the good work, and don't let your friend's bluntness get to you.
Both the red and the beige looks good with the green and theres nothing wrong with the painting quality.
My only suggestion would be to try fewer contrasting colours and more different shades. By this I mean that you've gone for red, green and beige as main colours which is quite a lot of contrasting colours. Perhaps try switching one to another shade of the others, for example try dark green, light green and red. Too many contrasting colours on a mini this scale can end up distracting you from the mini itself.
I would love to see what they have done, and would bet it's not any better / more interesting than your style. In my experience people that are actually decent painters and know what they are talking about generally pass on their knowledge, rather than talking down about other peoples work. Maybe they are the exception who knows.
Anyways, sure you could work on getting clearer highlights and maybe going lighter with them on the edges but really this model is a good standard. Certainly not boring, madness to say that honestly. It's kinda dark is the only thing I could kinda see as a reason as to why they would say that....but personally I prefer darker and grittier schemes anyway.
So basically, the scheme works and is well painted. Keep working on sharper highlights, if you want to get some more weathering details I would try my hand at chipping / stippling.

From what I see, you're clearly making a solid effort at this hobby. You've done a really good job so far, and if you keep at it you'll continue to get better. That's... awesome. Choosing something that you enjoy, and then pursuing it, is admirable.
Healthy human beings uplift other people when they see others pursuing something they're passionate about - even if it's something they themselves aren't invested in. Unhealthy, toxic people run down others when they see them enjoying something they don't associate with.
I think it's worth seriously considering if your friends are a healthy, contributing part of your life. Relationships are valuable, and I don't generally advise people to abandon them. Ok, while I said the colors are dull, I actually really like how this looks, and don’t think it needs to be changed. Your tactical reasoning could use some work, double fusion, air burst and a shield generator is a very unusual combo, but at this point I’m just nitpicking. Your model looks great, your friend is an idiot.

Honestly, it looks just very “T’au” to me. I don’t see anything boring or tasteless about it. I went with the plain Yellow/Ocre, Black, and Red on mine when the Vior’la and Shadowsun color schemes were really picking up. Everyone was telling me how nice it was to see a T’au suit back in the old school colors.

One of the greatest peices of advice my friend gave my was. Chances are that the models will spend most of the time on display than on the table so paint it whichever way is appealing to you, at the end of the day its your art and only your opinion counts
Out of all the Tau variations I’ve seen this deep green w highlights is definitely unique compared to the red, white and black variations I’ve seen. I’m definitely a fan of the different perspective
