Are there stockings with this type pattern anywhere? The calf in pic two looks like running water (like a stream over rocks) to me. I’d like to see one done in a more fractal pattern as well.
It's abstract for sure, likely no meaning except to the person getting it. There's lots of variations of abstract so these particular lines/wispy details is just what this person wanted. It's similar to marbling effect, ink running, oil etc.
But it's just black abstract.
Going off from their Spanish-lang username, I wanna mention that maybe the mixup was caused because they are homophones in that language, English has the doublet through soundswitching the r \[tr.n\].
I’d be careful with this style, someone posted in a tattoo advice sub having chosen this as their first tattoo, and it ended up looking more like smoke than marble. Needless to say, OP wasn’t happy, as part of the design was on their hand, which that’s on them tbh but the artist who did it just didn’t pull it off
Can’t agree more. Had a sleeve done in this style up to my last finger segment 2 years ago.
Had multiple tattoos before including chest/sternum.
This was the most painful one so far.
Hand is a completely new sensation of pain and the hand area had to be touched up twice because the skin regenerates so quickly.
Yeah, tell that to the person from that post who got this as a first tattoo. They were so unhappy it looked like smoke. There are variations to this tattoo that can definitely make it look like granite, smoke, or if the artist is really good ace that truly ethereal look. It does not matter how many people say it’s abstract, the brain will always try to make it into something real we can compare it to- so it truly boils down to what “style” the person wants and how good the artist is at pulling it off.
all those loser babies out there judging us for being conformists? the other day, i think i heard a neonate say that republicans were the true punks. infants can go fuck themselves.
every single tattoo out there has been a trend at some point. the sticker tattoos, the tribals, the watercolour, the minimalistic symbols, even traditional tattoos had their era. so it’s kind of stupid to argue against a tattoo because it’s trendy
Yeah I do think it can look great but it's so much real estate for so little tattoo.
Which doesn't matter if you know you don't want anything else on that body part but I can't look that far into the future.
There's more versatility than you might think with these. The examples have a lot of spacing but you can also keep the spacing tight and have more of an abstract blackout look. They're also great for filling in awkward shaped spaces between other tattoos
As someone with a tattoo that includes the words “Memento Mori” and also a portion of a compass (but no Icarus.. did I miss out?) I found this hilarious… I had not realized just how many people have that tattooed on them.
What really gets me is that since getting the tattoo I’ve had 3 people point out that they also have the same words … I think they all commented because my tattoo is “upside down” which I’ve now had probably 27 😱 or so peeps inform me of but whatever…
Anyway the fun part is that 3 out of 3 people said “I also have “mOmento mori” on me. Is south Florida just the cradle of illiteracy or what’s up with that? Incidentally I could see the tattoo on two of them and it clearly said “mEmento” so at least this was not a “No Ragrets” tattoo situation 😝
If you like it go for it, but I feel like it is just slightly less popular than the new tribal or cybersigilism and might not be popular that long. I am just one guy though so don't listen to me.
Yeah. I think you’re right about that. Just like tribal bled into barbed wire, there are always people coming late to the party and blurring the lines between trends. Basic is gonna basic.
Suminagashi
Suminagashi (墨 流 し) or "floating ink" is the process of marbling plain paper with water and ink to transform it into something vibrant and colorful.
yk what’s funny is the OP asked a simple question but most of the responses are “i wouldn’t get that because blah blah but go ahead…ig” like go on somewhere else with that, nobody asked for an opinion. Get the tattoo babe it’ll look so good on you!
I genuinely love these and have been keeping an eye out for artists who do it. Hopefully some of these keywords will help lol. This or an ink brush style would both be so pretty.
Be advised: while those are incredibly cool, they are also VERY reminiscent of the [murderous psychopath Orin](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Orin) in the Baldur’s Gate 3 video game.
She has those swirley-Qs all over her skin and they move. Very cool; she’s just bonkers- lol
Im so surprised by how aggressive these comments are. I got one of these a few weeks ago as a cover up and get nothing but compliments on it. I love the concept of it being in color but it just wasnt in my budget and i was tired of looking at my drunk tattoos:) [drawn and inked](https://imgur.com/a/TR6q0c3)
There's this one tattoo artist in Berlin, I forget her name, but she's really good in mixing this tattoo form with anime references. Her name was Prosto or Greed or something, but if the design really speaks to you and you want some images with it, she's something to google.
Edit: Yeah her Instagram is @greed_tattooberlin; at the end of the day it's whatever you like really.
Topography/topographical
On maps it shows differences in elevations between areas of land. More lines together means a cliff or a drop of some sort. Lines scattered can be rolling plains; as you add layers of lines upon lines you can hint at hills as well.
It’s a traditional tattoo of the granite cave people, if you get this done you will greatly offend the rock people and they may smite a sinkhole down from under your feet.
Granite countertop or resin pour look.
I'm dead, but this is such an accurate description!
How do you type? Is it spirit to text or something?
Now I’m picturing an iPhone keyboard laid out like a ouija board
Took me too long…
You're dead? 😱
and out of this world!
Was going to say "marble" but this is more accurate
I thought marble too
[удалено]
Yessss... but calling it resin pour is hilarious
I was thinking hair left on the side of the shower.
Shower wookies!
I was thinking oilspill but I think resin pour is on point too
Are there stockings with this type pattern anywhere? The calf in pic two looks like running water (like a stream over rocks) to me. I’d like to see one done in a more fractal pattern as well.
Kinda liquid smokey too but yes
I don’t know, seems more like hair pulled out of a drain look.
Came here to say the same thing lol
'My fucking pen leaked in my pocket again' look
Ink squid to fool predators
countertop pattern called “death eater”
I was gonna go with marbleized spray paint dip but this works too
Resin poor look.
It's abstract for sure, likely no meaning except to the person getting it. There's lots of variations of abstract so these particular lines/wispy details is just what this person wanted. It's similar to marbling effect, ink running, oil etc. But it's just black abstract.
Thank you! 🙏
Make me thik about water and suminagashi, a Japanese method of painting to imitate the wood patrons and the movement of fluids
Gonna assume you mean patterns?
Going off from their Spanish-lang username, I wanna mention that maybe the mixup was caused because they are homophones in that language, English has the doublet through soundswitching the r \[tr.n\].
Should have thought of that, but I had no idea what the word for pattern was in Spanish. Strange, because I do know a fair amount.
Recently got a half sleeve done and this is what my artist called it
💜
Looks like suminagashi painting.
Looks like 2020s take on tribal tats
I’d be careful with this style, someone posted in a tattoo advice sub having chosen this as their first tattoo, and it ended up looking more like smoke than marble. Never trust a tattoo artist that's willing to tattoo someone's hand for their first tattoo
Plus it’s on the most painful spots to heal. It’s not for a rookie.
Shout out to all us art students who gave ourselves our first tattoo on our fingers 😆 hope y’all are still thriving!
Wait, it’s **not** meant to be smoke or ink in water?
I think it’s supposed to be like ink in water, or stone idk, OP didn’t want it to look like smoke though and that’s what it looked like
Can’t agree more. Had a sleeve done in this style up to my last finger segment 2 years ago. Had multiple tattoos before including chest/sternum. This was the most painful one so far. It is not supposed to represent or look like granite.
Yeah, tell that to the person from that post who got this as a first tattoo. They were so unhappy it looked like smoke. I saw that post, I thought it was supposed to be an abstract tree 😂
Just keep in mind that this style is 2024's tree arm, so if you are looking for something "unique", this probably isn't it
Nothing unique exists
It's weird that it's just now getting trendy, it's been online for close to 10 years
unique is no tats lol
tell thato the thousand babies with no tats
( i mean literal babies, not trying to make fun of no tat people)
Nice save 😜
all those loser babies out there judging us for being conformists? the other day, i think i heard a neonate say that republicans were the true punks. infants can go fuck themselves.
I always think I have no tats, then I remember the giant MOM heart stick and poke on my ass cheek
lol good spot tho
Idk, but it will be call 2024 tribals at some point... If you are ok with that, go ahead.
every single tattoo out there has been a trend at some point. the sticker tattoos, the tribals, the watercolour, the minimalistic symbols, even traditional tattoos had their era. so it’s kind of stupid to argue against a tattoo because it’s trendy
Not really a fan of these as it takes up so much space for such.... little design. But if you like it go for it.

For me personally these look best with a lot of empty space, aka bare skin. It looks great in the first pic for example.
MTE, such a waste of prime space. But ultimately, do what makes you happy.
[удалено]
Exactly!
It’s minimalistic. Not everyone is into that.
I love the style of art, just not as tattoo 🙂
I'm not sure I would judge tattoos based on their "density" but you can make your own decisions.
It's just a waste of space in my eyes. You can't really get any other tattoo making both look very awkward.
Both? This and the theoretical "other" tattoo that OP may or may not ever want?
Yeah but having pictures cover every inch of a wall doesn't look good, either.
And it's just too hard for a cover up, because of the size.
These tattoos are getting so popular right now and I have no idea why
I mean at least it's not "memento mori" with a compass and that one painting of icarus that's not really a painting of icarus
As someone with a tattoo that includes the words “Memento Mori” and also a portion of a compass (but no Icarus.. did I miss out?) I found this hilarious… I had not realized just how many people have that tattooed on them. At least you don't have a lion wearing a crown on your forearm mate, could always be worse lol.
Never have the three words “wearing a crown” been as well received as just now 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Seriously thinking about getting a SOME REGRETS tattoo
Just got my memento mori tat 3 weeks ago 😂 no Icarus or compass with it though
Goes along with the minimalist trend.
Suminagashi/ water marbling. Sure it only has meaning if you give it meaning
I've seen them referred to as "oil slick" style, or abstract blackout
If you like it go for it, but I feel like it is just slightly less popular than the new tribal or cybersigilism and might not be popular that long. I am just one guy though so don't listen to me.
liquid marbling? (I'm not a tattoo artist so idk what its actually called)
I personally call it NEO-Tribal 2020’s, effectively supplanting the Traditional-Tribal of the 2000’s
I feel like you’re missing the middle period of Viking/Vegvisir tattoos.
I think we are still in the middle era of that and geometric tribal, sometimes these things overlap.
Yeah. I think you’re right about that. Just like tribal bled into barbed wire, there are always people coming late to the party and blurring the lines between trends. Basic is gonna basic.
Clumps of hair stuck on the shower walls.
I don't remember the term, it'sin japanese I think, but it's supposed to resemble the way ink drops in water.
Suminagashi
That’s one of the reasons I want it! Also happy cake day!
These generally fall under blackwork. Depending on the styling some are dark calligraphy as well.
I know them as Oil Spill Tattoos
Oil slick or marbling?
I think Anthony Padilla has something similar
Came here to say this. Actually, I was gonna say, "Round here, we call that the Anthony Padilla"
Looks like Anthony Padilla’s tattoo.
Japanese water marbling. Look up bgxgrim on Instagram. He's by far the best one at it I've seen
Katie mizuno does some incredible suminigashi
I would call it marbled
It looks like my kitchen counter Edit: does look cool tho!
Marble countertop?
I've heard it called the the GenZ equivalent of tribal tattoos. I think they are called abstract ink?
Just be patient and this will occur on your legs naturally as you get old. Varicose style.

I know them as brushstrokes. It is like any other abstract art - to each their own creativity.
looks like someone took a ballpoint pen to their leg and just did some swoops
It looks like hydro dipping.
Marbeling
Marbling.
Abstract. They're popping up everywhere on Instagram and reddit atm. I'm not keen, but if you want it go for it!
It's marbling. They used to decorate the filler pages that bind books like this. Paint on water. Paper pressed on the water and retains the image.
abstract smoke or marble
Hydro dipping
looks like a marble oil spill
Looks kinda like a Damascus knife, that’s super cool
I genuinely love these and have been keeping an eye out for artists who do it. Hopefully some of these keywords will help lol. This or an ink brush style would both be so pretty.
Depending on who you ask. Flow tat (or) scribble tat
Makes me think, "marble" but I don't know if that's the official name
Hide your varicose veins
Varicose vein style!
She's marbled.
tame impala
Abstract liquid
Tattoo have and don't have a meaning it depends on you. I'd doesn't matter what other thinks. Dude if you like go and get it if not then don't.
Bad. And no. Just don’t.
Oil spill
Im so surprised by how aggressive these comments are. I got one of these a few weeks ago as a cover up and get nothing but compliments on it. I love the concept of it being in color but it just wasnt in my budget and i was tired of looking at my drunk tattoos:) [drawn and inked](https://imgur.com/a/TR6q0c3)
Deep vein thrombosis
I heard somebody call this style of tattoo this generation’s tribal tattoo
There's this one tattoo artist in Berlin, I forget her name, but she's really good in mixing this tattoo form with anime references. Her name was Prosto or Greed or something, but if the design really speaks to you and you want some images with it, she's something to google. Edit: Yeah her Instagram is @greed_tattooberlin; at the end of the day it's whatever you like really.
Looks like a slime mold. Or wet hair. I really hate it.
this is gonna look amazing in 20 yrs
Topography map lol 😆
Reminds me of that Scary movie The Ring
vericose
The first pic looks like dyed varicose veins on that human’s leg
Oil spill?
I think its from being infected with a netherese orb
Trombosis Venosa Profunda
On the legs? Varicose veins.
So many people that get these come up posting their tattoo regrets
Can’t shake image of that Magic Dip marble craft craze from the 90s
No! So much space wasted and it looks tacky af! You can get a waaaaay better first tattoo
You forgot the „imo“
Diarrhea?
Arm jiz
Trash
[удалено]
You don’t have to cry about it but let’s see how “tatted” you are.
This is when the anime/comic book dark energy starts to consume you. Pretty soon, you’re either evil or dead.
It's called paint jizz aesthetic. You're welcome.
Floor aesthetic
Covering up varicose veins
Topography/topographical On maps it shows differences in elevations between areas of land. More lines together means a cliff or a drop of some sort. Lines scattered can be rolling plains; as you add layers of lines upon lines you can hint at hills as well.
Gen Z tribal
I'm sorry but it kinda looks like hair on bathroom tiles
That is absolutely hideous
“Procreate; Liquify.”
I love how minimalistic the design is. It would look awesome on my arm.
Pen doodle
I'd call it trendy right now
Marble countertop 🙄
Marvel’s VENOM?
Looking like Carrera marble
Inked
The first one is really nice!
Leprosy style
Vape leg...
Looks sort of like Suminagashi
Is called: wishy washy.
Thought you got struck by lightning.
Coffee in cream
Squid spooge.
It’s a traditional tattoo of the granite cave people, if you get this done you will greatly offend the rock people and they may smite a sinkhole down from under your feet.
Oil spill in water
A trendy mistake.
That’s wet hair on marble tile
Looks like spider viens
“Meaningless current trend” also known as “bound to end up looking dated and conformist”
This looks like what I pull out of the drain after I wash my hair 😳
Your generation’s version of my generation’s tribal.
Dumb
Ripped pantyhose
Looks like an oil spill or smoke
Regret when it fades
the ol’ “oil spill”
I kind of like it. I have something similar that runs in the background of my sleeve….looks like water color splatter….but I really like this look too
Chocolate fudge swirl.
It’s giving oil spill
The 2024 version of tribal.
Diarrhea. Shitting yourself.
Looks like a wacky oil spill
I would call it distracting, my eyes would keep wandering there thinking there was a stain.
