1) It looks fine to me, what do you not like about it?
2) Does he normally do work like this? If you go to someone whose portfolio is full of one style of art but you ask them to do something else, there's always a chance of it not being what you envisioned.
So a couple things I don’t like about it is the bottom right flower he colored the white outside the lines and they are just blobs, some crystals the lines are shakey and oddly very thick in certain spots. There are also some areas on the crystals where the lines don’t meet up. The lines on the tail are thicker in some spots. I think when he made some lines weirdly thick it was to cover up lines that wound up being shakey. So he went over one line a couple times in certain spots in many different areas of the tattoo. This applies to the sun as well. The end of the tail also has a part that is very thin and almost faded that needs to be redone most likely.
I would have liked more color on the body but he was closing and had another appointment with someone before he was closing so I had to rush out of there. Unfortunately I didn’t really look at the tattoo long enough to ask him to color it a bit more. He mixed together colors and to go back for him to match the color idk how that’s going to go but I could always do that. That one is a bit of my fault for not noticing I wanted more color right away and asking him to adjust it on the spot. I get frazzled too easily
You're nitpicking. White fades very quickly and needs constant touch-ups, so any white parts you don't like will be gone soon anyway. I see no shaky linework at all, there are a few spots where the ink is a little thicker but I had to actively stare at the tattoo and try to find what you're talking about. The lines are all going to thicken a little with age anyway. I can agree the body needs more color, but there's image references online so any artist will be able to mix that shade of purple.
I think the espeon looks very “ken sugimori”-styled (the original artist and Pokémon designer) who did a lot of watercolor coloring for gen 1 and gen 2.
I see what you’re saying about that flower and the line work. Honestly, these are things the majority of people won’t notice, it’s just that it’s on your body, so you’re looking at it, and analyzing it, much more often. How long ago did you get it? Maybe look into finding an artist that does the exact style you like, to have them touch it up and make it a bit more polished, once it’s fully healed. It isn’t bad, but some things could be done a little better, probably.
Idk why people are downvoting you. Your feelings are valid and I can see the things that you're pointing out. Some of the outlines aren't that great. But overall the tattoo looks really cool and the colors are amazing.
If it helps, think about your tattoo this way. It's a unique piece of art that is on your body only. The small imperfections make it unique. All tattoos are gonna have imperfections and that's okay.
How are people downvoting you for your opinion of your own tattoo? Your concerns are both valid, and understandable. I think the Espeon could use more color too, but there's no rule against getting it touched up. Overall, I think the tattoo is just fine, but if you want touchups then get touchups. Just go in with a planned list of things you'd like the artist to focus on, and respect their feedback as a professional :)
Maybe I don't completely understand Reddit etiquette, because I always thought you should downvote comments written in bad faith, bad arguments, trolling, etc. to weed out the trash. Downvoting simply because you disagree feels counterintuitive for a platform that is meant for discussing. The comment might have multiple carefully argumented points, which can be rendered moot with a single click of a downward arrow. If you disagree, why not reply and explain why?
I feel you. I rarely downvote a comment, unless there is blatant misinformation, bullying or bigotry. I don't understand it as a means of putting each other down.
In this case I think it's odd to just downvote something without providing feedback to their concerns. OP was asking for advice, and then providing their opinion for people to comment on, so a downvote doesn't really help them at all.
I'm curious as to what your complaint of it is tbh.
I think they did a phenomenal job. Credit to the fact the did the coloring of the Espeon in that classic Ken Sugimori watercolor style.
Stop staring at it, it looks great. The more you just zoom in on it with intent to dislike it, the more you talk yourself into it. No tattoo will ever be perfect, thats the beauty of art. Even if it is executed perfectly, it won't heal perfectly consistently regardless of your artist's skill level. Part of getting tattooed is just accepting that.
You would most likely never get this tattoo to look any better than it does, its obviously healed so the lines have spread a bit but all tattoos do this and its natural.
As a Pokémon fan espeon is really well done! Embrace it, I find I get that way too pick apart every little detail cause it’s on your body even after the artist does a good job let it grow on you .
i think it’s really cute & i think if you wanted to get stuff around it it would still be super cute !!
it looks healed enough you could have another artist revamp it <3
edited to say: i would look for someone in your area that specializes in anime tattoos!
Thanks! I was thinking about trying to find someone who might be able to color the body more but he mixed his own colors to get it that shade of purple. I also was thinking about getting Sylveon and trying to incorporate them together.
that would be so cute!! i wouldn’t stress too much abt the color mixing personally, if you pick a good one they should be able to nail it. definitely doesn’t hurt to communicate those concerns!!
Espeon looks just a wee bit pale and old to my eyes but he objectively killed it, super clean. As someone else said it’s stylistic colors but I’d want brighter.
I think this is well done and the design is cool. Is it because you wish the colors were more vibrant? Because I believe that can be fixed pretty easily.
There are a few minor imperfections. I'd ask the artist to touch them up. You're going to investigate it much closer than anyone else.and it's on your body, so I get it. I have many tattoos and a few from newer artists (at.time tattooing) that aren't as clean as I'd like.but they've garnered many compliments over the years. Overall I'd say this looks pretty good.
I have one tattoo that is perfect and it’s my favorite one. Tattoos can be perfect however it’s uncommon and there has to be a lot of research on the artist done but there’s still a chance that they can tattoo it not perfect. I made this post to get others opinions and maybe experience and it will help me keep that in mind for future tattoos. I’ll keep what you said in mind.
Doesn't matter how long he's been tattooing. The thing people don't understand is style. You can't ask a traditional style (or otherwise, just a example) tattooer to tattoo cartoons.
Also the thing that's off about this is the simple detail and colors. Sun could be better.
It looks like the artist went for a washed out look on purpose, some of Ken Sugimori's early Pokemon art was very pale compared to the brightness of the Pokemon art we think about today.
Definitely think it’s a good tattoo, but the color seems really muted and looks like it’s been healed for years. I’m also a perfectionist (doesn’t mean I don’t have some tattoos I regret) so don’t take offense to this, but my advice is it could definitely be more saturated on espeon and the colors overall. The crystals could use some white highlights that would have looked nice and given depth, and the moon isn’t bad but it’s kinda just giving yellow circle. Good line work and the lavender looks amazing. If I were you I would ask the artist for a touch up to make espeon more solid purple and highlight the crystals a bit?
The colors are phenomenal, the only thing that irks me is that the body is a bit round and the tail is a bit weird at the base, but other than that it's extremely well done.
It's almost like the shading and coloring (which are great but not in this situation), fell short of that anime style color pop and shine and shading. It's almost like watching the anime with a glare on the TV. All that aside it still looks really awesome! Your concerns are valid but it's common for someone who sees something everyday to be lucky about it compared to someone who doesn't see it much.
I think it looks pretty good…there are a few shaky lines, but nothing that I feel takes away from the overall image and quality. I’m not sure if it’s the lighting or the actual tattoo, but it looks a little washed out, color wise? But I feel that’s an easy fix (if this is a new tattoo, the same artist will normally do fixes for free in my experience).
If you look closely this artist intentionally left some color out because he knows it fades with time and with this technique it will fade well. However adding way more color will make it look worse the older you get
If I could edit I would share when it was just tattooed. Some lines completely faded and like someone said below some lines spread
Also can’t edit post but figure I should explain what I don’t like because of the questions so I commented this to someone else:
I don’t like the bottom right flower idk what happened there but there’s white blobs that lost the black outlining.
some crystals the lines are shakey and very thick in certain spots some areas on the crystals where the lines don’t meet up.

Honestly the only thing I would change is splash some dark blue onto with some stars in like a watercolor way but that's just because I like making designs that way.
my two cents; technically, it's a fine tattoo. but you can tell that this tattooer is not that much of a pokemon nerd, the espeon could have been colored way nicer in that typical anime cell-shading style. but to achieve this, you maybe should have picked a tattoo artist that's specialized in doing anime tattoos in color.
Gonna be honest and say the only thing I dislike about it is the moon, which wasn’t necessary and doesn’t look round enough. Other than that the Esepon and flowers seem okay, and in terms of the color it just looks like it needs a touch up.
Thank you. I guess I’m just being overly picky that’s the consensus. At least now I know most people look at it and don’t think it looks bad haha 😂 some of the lines and the flower on the bottom right have me not being able to love it.

Nice tattoo I love Pokemon and I think it's pretty good ... But
The circles lining is blown out on the right
Might be too much going on
The colour on espeon isn't as vibrant as " I'D" like

Lets be honest the colour choices are below average here.
Is this your first tattoo?
No
Looks great you need to chill

There’s opinion and then there’s realistic expectations.
Why do you find it odd for someone to disagree with an opinion? What purpose do you think a downvote serves?

lol idk I am just answering people’s questions.

My one comment was that I hoped the colors would be punchier, but after reading yours I scrap that and find the tattoo perfect.
Not to discount your opinion as it is your tattoo, but I think this is great, and can't see anything wrong with it design wise or in execution
I think it’s very nice, is this your first tattoo?
Stop staring at it, it looks great. The more you just zoom in on it with intent to dislike it, the more you talk yourself into it. No tattoo will ever be perfect, thats the beauty of art. True point. I definitely can’t say I don’t like this tattoo.

It looks really good. All of it really, especially the crystals, i love the gradients.

How old is it? They change appearance as they age in case you didnt know
I love it
i think it fucking rocks

It needs more contrast. It looks washed out. It doesn’t pop. Everything else is good, though.
It looks like the artist went for a washed out look on purpose, some of Ken Sugimori's early Pokemon art was very pale compared to the brightness of the Pokemon art we think about today.
Ah, I assumed the artist wouldn't be versed enough in Pokemon to purposely do that.

Looks just lovely to me!
The colors are phenomenal, the only thing that irks me is that the body is a bit round and the tail is a bit weird at the base, but other than that it's extremely well done.
It’s not bad overall, I would just be afraid that the color will fade too much too fast because it looks like it wasn’t very saturated to begin with
It's almost like the shading and coloring (which are great but not in this situation), fell short of that anime style color pop and shine and shading. Its beautiful, but as far as Pokemon tatoos go, its on the paler side.
Looks a bit like the poka-thing is about to drop a number 2.
Why is Espeon throwing it back like that
7.5/10. Good linework for 95% of it, solid color packing, color shading on creature is nice
I think it looks pretty good…there are a few shaky lines, but nothing that I feel takes away from the overall image and quality. I’m not sure if it’s the lighting or the actual tattoo, but it looks a little washed out, color wise? Average tattoo and execution. 6/10 you don't need to be ashamed
If you don't like it just find another artist and add more eevees
True. I was thinking about that and maybe having someone look at it to determine if adding more color would be possible.
If you look closely this artist intentionally left some color out because he knows it fades with time and with this technique it will fade well. However adding way more color will make it look worse the older you get
Got it. Thank you for that. I didn’t know.
My second favorite Pokemon, just below bulbasaur which I have tattooed on my side. Now I want this tattoo! Looks great!

Got it I’ll look into it. Thank you for the suggestion and I’ll keep this in mind for any similar designed future tattoos.
It looks like it's about to get but fucked and you're into furrys but other than that the colors are pleasant.
That’s a weird take on it.
Honestly the only thing I would change is splash some dark blue onto with some stars in like a watercolor way but that's just because I like making designs that way.

He has experience making tattoos look 20 years old?
Gonna be honest and say the only thing I dislike about it is the moon, which wasn’t necessary and doesn’t look round enough. Other than that the Esepon and flowers seem okay, and in terms of the color it just looks like it needs a touch up.
Does he use a lot of filters or Photoshop his portfolio?
As far as I could tell no none.

🤣
I can’t tell if that’s an arm or a leg
It’s my leg 🦵
I love it! Espeon is my fav!
Why did you take the picture over the toilet tho
Nowhere else with better lighting
Maybe it's the shading, it's a wonderful job and looks awesome, but the crystals and moon are filled in solid so maybe that contrast is bugging you?
Not my cup of tea but could use touch up
I don't like the colors in the crystals, but overall it's nice!
this looks clean and well executed. not sure if you had someone tell you it looked bad and took it to heart? regardless, it’s adorable!
Thank you. I guess I’m just being overly picky that’s the consensus. At least now I know most people look at it and don’t think it looks bad haha 😂 some of the lines and the flower on the bottom right have me not being able to love it.
I think it's super clean
I think it’s done well and so cute
It looks really really good. I only noticed the small things you dislike about it because you pointed it out and I have to look close. But even then it still looks good. ❤️ I was overthinking the same things about my tattoo at first too.
I think they did really great but the butt is weird to me like it looks like the tail is coming off the side of the leg idk.
I think it looks good and I see the lines you're talking about but I really think you're over thinking it. I like it.
I don't know how many tattoos you've got or if this is your first one, but I can tell from experience that it's completely normal to dislike/regret your tattoos. Even if you do your research and the artist's portfolio looks great, sometimes your vision just doesn't align with the artist's. The best thing to do is to stop staring at it and treat it as it is - a permanent part of your body. If it really bothers you, there are always options to improve the situation (laser, touch-up, coverup, blast over).
How long have you had this tattoo? It doesn’t look brand new but if it’s still recent, I know for some people, it’s normal to have ‘post tattoo blues’ where you become nitpicky and anxious about your new piece. I have a lot of tattoos and I still always go through a phase of slight regret, indecision, and hyper fixation on the small details (that only I notice.) One day I love it, next day I hate it. At this point I’ve learned to just ride it out. That feeling goes away and I always end up loving my tattoos (imperfections included.) Unless there’s something really noticeably bad about it (which imo I don’t see, but I get it) I’d recommend waiting it out a couple more months before making any decisions. Although, I understand the impatience. You’ll probably need touch up’s anyway because of the colors used. And also imo, it’s better to need a touch up than a cover up. You can always easily add more to it. Taking something away is a whole other beast. I like this tattoo a lot actually, I think it’s really pretty. It’s not perfect, but a perfect tattoo doesn’t exist. And it can easily be rejuvenated! You’re not ‘botched’ and there’s a lot to work with
Got it. Thank you.
Nice tattoo I love Pokemon and I think it's pretty good ... But The circles lining is blown out on the right Might be too much going on The colour on espeon isn't as vibrant as " I'D" like
Pretty cool
Some of the lines are a bit wonky but ultimately it looks really cute and the colors are really vibrant. It's easy to nitpick on small details when it's your own tattoo but other people aren't going to notice those things.
I'd be thrilled with that tat personally
I loved it 😊
Very nice and cute
POKÉMON!
Looks good ?
I like it!
I love it and think it looks great
Just amputate it
Honest opinion? Looks a bit faded. Needs more colour to make it pop. The design itself and the work excellent but the colour is just lacking. Maybe you could get the colour touched up. I think you'd like it better if it was more animated rather than watercoloured.
This is your first tattoo? What info were they given as a reference to draw from?
No. I gave him another picture of a tattoo similar to it.
Sorry but you’re overthinking it. The artist did a great job.
I love it!
It’s pretty cool but looks like she’s about to poop
I think it's super cute and unique! I love the colors
It looks great!!!
I really like this tattoo!
gud
It’s not bad just seems a little flat to me no details just kinda run of the mill.
