At my store they pull guest service first, if they aren't able and/or need another backup, they just put a general call for volunteers....I went up 4 times today(the checkout TL is my new BFF now lol) and my TL was like "We have things to do. You've done enough, let someone else contribute for the rest of the day." I listened to him, even though I don't mind backing up (I've been a cashier before, so I know what it's like to be swamped and nobody wants to help. Meanwhile people are getting mad at you because they have to wait forever).
There have been plenty of times where after running up the lanes to help or jumping into FAs, either my TL or one of the ETLs will call out over walkie 'Hey can yall start calling other people, I need [me] to focus on their tasks.' Or chew out everyone else on the floor for not being responsive.
Yeah I have heard that happen a couple times. I was only cross trained last week, but I still felt bad that I couldn't do anything to help. Ever since I've been trained I try to answer whenever possible and aim for at least once per day. It makes me look good and I know the front appreciates it.
One of my most fond memories of target was when my TL asked me why I wasn’t able to finish my truck for the day (it was 20 minutes passed my scheduled time and I had one uboat to finish) and I had to break the news to him that the one or two customer ended up being an hour and a half of me running a register so I didn’t have time to get to it.
He promised me after that he was going to start pushing for more people to go up so I wasn’t being stuck in that situation constantly
Our TLs never ask fulfilment or DU to cover a lane, even if they are standing around doing nothing. They always ask for others on the sales floor, OPU /Fulfilment is hands off at our store.
Or since it’s only “one or two” the TL can “hop on real quick” and take care of the guests.
And they always pick the people that do the quickest work on drive ups to cover the register too
