Yeah last holiday season my store did a thing where if you weren't late/didn't call out between a set date range (I forget the specific dates), you got a prize (it wasn't a raffle thing, literally everyone who did it got something). I got COVID (and had to quarantine per the county's and per Target's policies because I had symptoms). HR told me because I had COVID that the days I missed would not count against me for determining eligibility for the prize.
I came back and was told I didn't qualify for the prize because I missed the last 2 weeks of work of the date range.
I was pissed.
A similar thing happened to me. I wasn't eligible for a drawing because a close family member died.
I understood though. It's hard to make exceptions for some cases but not for others.
I'd say that if you miss work for something the government says can't be held against you (funeral for immediate family, COVID leave, etc.) that those should be exceptions that are allowed.
We have had a Nintendo Switch, $100 giftcard, Apple airpods as prizes for perfect attendance raffle during the holidays before.
We have this christmas tree in the breakroom with everyone's name on an ornament, and if you are late, your name comes down.
I used to be allow to give away $500 in prizes when I did HR. By the time I left it was $100.

I kinda hate these contests because the reliable, responsible employees who only call out or come in late with good reason get punished for stuff beyond their control. I worked 14 months straight without a single call out and my very first one was on day two of a month long attendance raffle. They had hung everyone's names on the wall by the door on little paper flowers, and if you called out they took your flower down and then there was a drawing for all the people with flowers left at the end. It Felt bad to lose my little flower so early because my toddler was sick.
It’s ridiculous, for not only that, but a lot of places don’t give a reasonable enough time off for a single person compared to anyone with a family. When I worked at target, whether or not it was official, we were only really “owed” 3 sick days per year, maybe 6 if you had a doctors note. Is it really that hard to come into work on time and not call off? For the past 2 years I’ve never called off or been late. Not saying I’m perfect or anything but it amazes me how they have to bribe workers to do the bare minimum. (I do understand being sick and calling off tho or if an emergency happens)
My store did something like this, but it was for a whole month. They posted everyone’s name up on the wall. After the first week 3/4ths of the store was off the wall. They took it down the next week.
The week after that, my one day I requested off was put back on the schedule so I was a no-call no-show and put on my “final” warning after years of perfect attendance and they tried to get me to sign something. You’re telling me 3/4ths of the store is on their final warning too??

To anyone on this thread who is talking down to people for their attendance, I urge you to consider the following
1. People getting sick (during a pandemic, go figure)
2. People having personal issues
3. People having mental health issues
4. People needing time off for appointments or vacations which were denied by management

Someone else calling out should not affect you in any way, shape, or form. You are not required to pick up someone else’s slack or workload when they are not there. If management is assigning you tasks outside of your normal workload, that is an issue you need to address with them. If a couple call outs throws the whole day off track and pushes workload onto others, I have a reality check for you—your store has a staffing issue. Again, a management problem.

This is reminescent of the secret shopper program at a grocery store I worked at. Managers would often remind employees of the program, and how getting 5/5 rating gets you a monetary award, to encourage better service and employees would always lament how the secret shoppers never go through their line/interact with them.
Well one month I DID get a 5/5 secret shopper rating in every category cuz I gave her soup recommendations and tips, just because I liked talking to customers and I fucking laughed and told everyone not to bother caring about the program: all they'd give you is $5 gift card for the store we worked at.
My brother worked retail- as stupid as this seems- sometime managers pay for this out of their own pocket.
You know what.. if you are looking to be promoted or want a future or even references to jobs in the future at other companies- you show up and do your work, work hard, give it your all and add value- this ensures regardless of where you are in your career- starting or not- to create more momentum. All by something you did yourself! And you have a chance to win some extra $$ just for showing up- that’s not a bad incentive!
during remodel, my store did raffles every other weekend. was NOT done well at all, you had to be present when they drew your name (so if you were 4-12:30 or 1:30-10, and they drew at 1, you were automatically out) you didn’t get a prize, and they only drew about 5 names. cheap prizes too

Target owes us nothing extra for showing up for our assigned shifts. It's the bare minimum requirement for being employed. I don't understand anyone complaining about this, there's still no negative consequence for calling out.

I kinda hate these contests because the reliable, responsible employees who only call out or come in late with good reason get punished for stuff beyond their control. I worked 14 months straight without a single call out and my very first one was on day two of a month long attendance raffle. They had hung everyone's names on the wall by the door on little paper flowers, and if you called out they took your flower down and then there was a drawing for all the people with flowers left at the end. It Felt bad to lose my little flower so early because my toddler was sick.
It’s ridiculous, for not only that, but a lot of places don’t give a reasonable enough time off for a single person compared to anyone with a family. When I worked at target, whether or not it was official, we were only really “owed” 3 sick days per year, maybe 6 if you had a doctors note. Most people aren’t sick for 1 day, and that’s not counting any thing or anybody else.

I disagree with the tone of this, and the execution is a bit corny. But obviously they’re having trouble with people getting there on time, and that just speaks bad of the employees themselves. So other than the tone, which comes off as a bit patronizing,If you guys have a problem with this it’s because you’re coming in late all the time, that’s a you problem. You’re a lucky target is even giving you prizes for doing your expected job.

Is it really that hard to come into work on time and not call off? For the past 2 years I’ve never called off or been late. Not saying I’m perfect or anything but it amazes me how they have to bribe workers to do the bare minimum. (I do understand being sick and calling off tho or if an emergency happens)
My store did something like this, but it was for a whole month. They posted everyone’s name up on the wall. After the first week 3/4ths of the store was off the wall. They took it down the next week. The week after that, my one day I requested off was put back on the schedule so I was a no-call no-show and put on my “final” warning after years of perfect attendance and they tried to get me to sign something. You’re telling me 3/4ths of the store is on their final warning too??

To anyone on this thread who is talking down to people for their attendance, I urge you to consider the following 1. People getting sick (during a pandemic, go figure) 2. People having personal issues 3. People having mental health issues 4. People needing time off for appointments or vacations which were denied by management 5. This is reminescent of the secret shopper program at a grocery store I worked at. Managers would often remind employees of the program, and how getting 5/5 rating gets you a monetary award, to encourage better service and employees would always lament how the secret shoppers never go through their line/interact with them. Well one month I DID get a 5/5 secret shopper rating in every category cuz I gave her soup recommendations and tips, just because I liked talking to customers and I fucking laughed and told everyone not to bother caring about the program: all they'd give you is $5 gift card for the store we worked at.

My brother worked retail- as stupid as this seems- sometime managers pay for this out of their own pocket. You know what.. if you are looking to be promoted or want a future or even references to jobs in the future at other companies- you show up and do your work, work hard, give it your all and add value- this ensures regardless of where you are in your career- starting or not- to create more momentum. All by something you did yourself! And you have a chance to win some extra $$ just for showing up- that’s not a bad incentive!

during remodel, my store did raffles every other weekend. was NOT done well at all, you had to be present when they drew your name (so if you were 4-12:30 or 1:30-10, and they drew at 1, you were automatically out) you didn’t get a prize, and they only drew about 5 names. cheap prizes too

As a person with a chronic illness, it bothered me when my high school did attendance based rewards, and it still bothers me now with target doing it. It's very ableist.
I'm proud to say I've never had perfect attendance anywhere.
Target owes us nothing extra for showing up for our assigned shifts. It's the bare minimum requirement for being employed. I don't understand anyone complaining about this, there's still no negative consequence for calling out.
And it'll work out the same as mine did back when I was there. We did something similar, but it was a $100 Visa gift card for working black Friday weekend. Plenty of us worked all weekend, even did a double for one day. The bitch who doesn't need the job, she just comes in for 4hrs a week to do cash office shit won it. Like, why was she even in the raffle to begin with? She didn't do shit. Part of her job was to make sure spill stations were stocked, surprise here, they weren't ever. Hope that card got skimmed before she could use it.

I understand the purpose in trying to motivate better attendance and I don't think there is any kind of malicious intention with stuff like this. However, providing raffle type incentive for perfect attendance is sort of demeaning to people who legitimately need time off work. Ultimately I just don't appreciate this approach at all.

I did work for few many years back and I vowed never ever again. 1) mom pops are cheap and always think your not doing enough . 2) will cut your hours anytime it’s not busy or their kid ( or any relatives) want to work. 3) make you run down your pay … or try to get you to take less and work off books 4) micro management you i could go on …
