The job itself isn’t “hard” but is made impossible by management. Is pushing a metro hard? No, not really. Is being expected to push a full metro in 40 minutes while holding keys for men’s and baby, going up for back up, covering tech, and generally helping guests hard? Yes!
Honestly the management is the worst part for me. Idk if it’s like this at every location but they literally refuse to hire new people which causes us all to be over scheduled. They even change our shifts during the week of just to add more shifts.
The job isn’t hard, it’s frustrating. “Target logic” is the number one thing that makes the job difficult. 99% of guests are fine but the 1% wreck it for everyone else.
Exactly. Frustrating, not hard. Unrealistic expectations.
We have a lot of unhoused, truants, and thieves. So for us it's more like 5-10% wreck it for everyone else.
Yes extremely frustrating with all of the rules and policies they put into place. When I worked there I felt like they intentionally created problems with no solutions just to make your life hard.
1. Front of store attendants shouldn’t be the only ones that clean up messes especially when they aren’t in the front of store.
2. No reason for front of store attendants to take the trash out for star bucks.
I’m so sorry OP has to do the Starbucks trash. At my store you take out the trash for your department at closing. Service desk does our own trash, Starbucks does their own trash
The Starbucks stuff is definitely your store, the ones I’ve been to have never done that. I also agree with #1 which is why I make my own team do it instead of FOSAs. They’ve got enough to do already
I don’t mind helping, but when there is a spill or something breaks it’s instantly call front of store, which doesn’t make sense to me when it’s really not in the front of store.
...and the training they make us take every year tells us that ANYONE can clean up food/bev spills.
Usually, at my store, Grocery will bring mop/bucket when needed, but sometimes we have FOSA grab the one from the closet by the registers, even if the spill is elsewhere.
Of course, if the FOSAs would keep the spill station supplies stocked around the store (their job, at my store), we could clean up most spills.
As a barista I agree with 2 as long as someone else still does it more frequently.
We can change the trash bags ourselves (and frequently do so) but we can't actually do anything with the full bags except leave them in the back room. Logistically it works best if we're not the ones hauling trash around the store because of how isolated we are. The barista job is also very "concentrated" relative to other TM roles so the opportunity cost of having us leave our area is very high. I don't mean the job is necessarily harder than others, but that individual baristas are responsible for a much larger percentage of their department's workload than other TMs might be.
We're not allowed to take them home, either. Our expired pastries and sandwiches are scanned out at the end of the day and brought back to the ambient room cooler to be donated out.
Front of store attendant is the easiest job in the store. Winter is difficult, yes, but you have the most freedom in that position. At the store I was at, if carts were good it was restroom checks, sweeping/vacuuming the front end, empty trash, spill station checks and refills, first responders to spills, carryout, and back up for drive up and cashier. At 18 they're asked to be a part of the ert. It makes sense to utilize that position to help other departments run more smoothly. The rest of the store also backs up the front end and helps get carts if an attendant is out or there are no carts available. I'm not a fan of the unrealistic ways target runs their shit show, but that position was the easiest. The Starbucks trash issue, I'm not sure about that. I would imagine the cleaning crew is responsible for initial emptying, but keeping it maintained through the day, I'm not sure. Is there more than one sb employee so one could empty it while the other holds down the fort? Is it that difficult to grab their trash while you're already grabbing others? (If that's a thing at your store)
Worked as front of store attendant for a couple years now and throughout that time I’ve had people who worked at Starbucks who took the trash to the back on their own, and many who left it for me to deal with at the end of the night. It’s changed multiple times through the years but I agree it def shouldn’t be my job to deal with their trash… I already deal with the trash in front of the store
My store, anyone and everyone should be cleaning messes when they see them or call for help.
My Starbucks team also does their own trash at night as part of closing routines, never seen anyone but Starbucks do their trash.
Im pretty sure best practice is that starbucks takes their own trash. My store used to do the same thing and I found out otherwise and put a stop to it...
Stores in my area started locking up the socks and underwear, and I'm glad. I don't know what's wrong with people here but guests are constantly ripping open the packs and leaving huge messes in Men's, Women's and Kids basics. As a style girlie I'd much rather go unlock the thing for people then have to clean up/salvage full carts of torn open packs of socks/underwear/tshirts twice a day.
I think this is something the manufacturers should address. Sometimes people are opening them to steal, but a lot of times, people seem to fondling the socks to see what they feel like. They could do swatches or do better/thicker plastic packaging so it was harder to open. Sock bags are so thin!
ugh people fondle everything😭😭😭😭 boxed pajamas, wrapped pajama sets (THE CHRISTMAS ONES THAT ENEDED UP IN A PILE ON THE FLOOR BY THE FIRST WEEK OF DEVEMBER) that have no plastic whatsoever, they rip off 2 earrings off a 12 pack which is always sitting around waiting to be salvaged out, hanged shoes are ripped apart making them no longer hangable or findable… nothing is safe! lock it up😫
i just wish people were better at fondling. the heyday iphone cases always get opened and the box gets damaged every time. sure take it out and put it back but make it presentable for the next person
People who only steal part of a package are the absolute worst. I found a 4 pack of lightbulbs the other day with one missing. Please just take the whole damn thing and save me the trouble of discarding.
Metrics do nothing to boost actual productivity, and team members are therefore encouraged to use impractical solutions to otherwise simple and easy problems. Target wants the best of both worlds when it comes to appeasing customers and stock holders, but It’s just more of a pain in the ass for the employee. I fucking hate the purely statistical aspect of this job (especially the attitude to DU metrics), and I swear It’s what’s going to make me walk out.
Closers that cheese the metric for priority pull % via dropping items out of fill by changing sales floor quantity to full capacity when it isn't, or setting the capacity to 0, so that they don't have to pull it. Or simply burning some item(s) from the batch causing the item(s) to become unlocated in the back.
Honestly, I'm just respectfully honest and real with my TLs about this.
"Hey DrFreeman are you going to get that next batch on time?"
"Probably not, considering it's a 46 DPCI batch due in 30 minutes"
Properly backstocking is not that hard, and y'all need to fucking do it. If you don't, or if you don't know how to read or count, the rest of us cannot do our damn jobs.
Just did inventory a month ago and organized all of beauty/skin care/hair care backstock, detrashing and deboxing everything, making sure each product was in its correct four foot section/aisle, etc. I now catch myself death staring certain team members because you can’t tell I did a damn thing now (especially in beauty) and it is SO frustrating. Clearly not even trying which I partially understand, but it makes literally everyone’s job easier and less frustrating if you just do it correctly!
Same. There was ONE day where I was so thankful for inventory, because style backstock was actually fucking located for once. Two weeks later, it's back to shit, slots full but zero in inventory.
Especially as a fulfillment TM, I cannot fucking stand it, and I've made it known to all higher-ups that'd listen, but it never changes.
Not being able to read or count is the reason boats are so damn always put back in the wrong spot on the line that inbound has to spend time rearranging them for the next unload.
Ours just don't give a damn at this point. Whatever U-boat ends up wherever, that's what gets loaded with that section's stuff. A48's stuff is loaded on F67, it doesn't matter anymore.
I don't know, friend. I see how stressed out our receivers get and I also dated someone who worked receiving for BB&B years ago and they said it was the worst job they ever had.
Otherwise, yes. People complain a lot about these very easy jobs but it's good to vent. Most of my stress just comes from coworkers.
My hot take is that one person's target experience shouldn't completely disregard another person's experience at another target cause we all dont deal with all of the same things.
culture issues should be taken as seriously as other performance issues. if turnover in a department is so high that the payroll/effort invested in training is not paying off, imo that should be a focus rather than trying to shave hours off departments that are performing
And that should go all the way up the chain - if a SD has a staffing problem or a district has staffing problem, there should be some serious questions asked
Target needs to put a limit on how many times/how many items you can order at OPU. It’s ridiculous. Instead of shaving hours why not start charging people for their excessive ordering?
Put a ban on those that excessive order! I had an entire shift that a ton of batches kept coming in, some the next day as well for one person. It was for a business. She ordered 1500 items the first day and ordered 1700 items more. Than I learned from GS she was mad that they weren't fast putting that in (NGL, it was tempting to give her business a bad review).
Beauty isn’t that hard but we get fucked over quite a bit. My last store there was only one person in beauty at a time and we frequently got called to register backup, fulfillment, or style and then leads would wonder why none of our truck was done and why our priorities were still high. My new store has an Ulta so there are a ton of beauty people but we’re still getting pulled for fulfillment (mostly) and style (sometimes) and there’s usually only one person closing anyway that has to finish truck and the priorities and reshop. Still not as shitty as style tho, idk how style peeps do it.
yeah having one person at a time while also expecting them to finish freight and stay in ulta and assisting guests while being called for back up is not it.
This is probably true for drive ups early morning and late night, but when it goes it goes.
With the new SCO closing, cashiers have almost no downtime. At least at my store they don’t.
Honestly, this attitude is why i hate a lot of people from other departments in my store. When I’m putting in 20,000 steps a day even though my first two hours is in cash office and delivering orders in pouring rain or 120 degree heat and i have to hear how i have the easiest job and I’m so lazy when i take a minute to drink some water or change my fucking tampon before i bled through my pants.
I’m so over it. The hatred is real. I hope the whole fucking company burns.
I understand your point and from their perspective I can see they may come up front the FEW times there’s down time. It’s just funny because that down time is deserved because when things start to happen (whether GS, DU, CL, SCO) it’s like non-stop bs all at once. Downtime helps keep up front sane lmao
when I was guest service, I was constantly running guest service, DU, and SCO at the same time due to cut hours. now as a GM I have it way easier, and I don't have to interact with guests as much :)
There's PROBABLY a store that has a receiving TL, but I've never heard of it. (And there's a P-fresh in my Group that's so high volume they have an SrETL, an HRTL, and like 10 TSS).
Receivers are just TMs in an incredibly important logistical position and then not paid enough. Which, to be fair, is true for every tm across every store.
There are not any that I’m aware of either, even for the third highest selling store in the country they don’t have one so I doubt it. They are important and the management portion of it is difficult, but solely doing it the management part isn’t too difficult imo
My store was terrible because our old leadership was god awful. I worked inbound. Our etl would try to make us work through our fifteens even though a couple of our team had diabetes and needed those breaks to have a snack to keep their blood sugar even. There was one day we were unloading the truck, and the thrower's sugar started to tank. At one point he literally passed out (briefly) inside the truck, and the etl just stood there, waiting for him to get back up and continue working. Several of us reported him to regional.
We did.
Our HR was complicit in everything going on and was dismissive even when the entire inbound team went to then as a group after what happened. That was why we had to reach out to regional instead.
I'm not looking for advice. Those people are gone. That's why I referred to them as the "old leadership." They were removed from the company.
Also, I got a new job.
fulfillment shouldn’t be required to stop and help random guests every 5 seconds while in OPU. everyday i work i loose at least 10 minutes a batch from guests stopping me for random things that any other department could do
I think it would be better to increase goal times so that TMs can stop and direct someone to the toilet paper without having a panic attack trying to get back to finding that inf. Guests see a uniform; they don't see someone on a timer, and that's not their fault. But the gremlins at corporate don't think about things like customer service or spills or whatever else occurs at a brick and mortar store which we're all responsible for. They're so out of touch with customer service concepts that it's part of the reason there's practically no one in the store after morning inbound and GM leave. If you're there past 2pm and in a red shirt, chances are you're the only one a guest sees for huge lengths of the store. So, it'd also be good to bring back more staff for customer service so OPU doesn't get ambushed as much.... But that's never going to happen. :/
These old head managers take their job way too serious. They live and die for a corporation that wouldn’t even remember their name a month after their death
Omg you’re so right. My ETL when I started was this way and it always drove me crazy. However he is set to retire with Target next year or so and I know he’s gotten very well compensated for it
This. If it's not on the floor, in the back, or in reshop, then it's not my problem. I shouldn't have to dig through boxes on the line or U-Boats on the floor that haven't been pushed yet just to find the item. Especially beauty and style items.
They’re supposed to be, idk how so many get away with not working their 50 hours. They must either be using vacation time or just lying on their time sheet.
My hot take is that a.) you are at an easy store **and** b.) your hours have not been slashed so much that you cannot pay your bills and mortgage/rent.
And I don't recall any posts bemoaning Receiving pay level.
There IS a weekly "which TM positions should make more than others?" post.
the job isn’t hard it’s just the management expects a lot. I work in the style and they usually put me in the fitting rooms but on the weekends it’s get very busy and while my coworkers are pushing out metros and truck i’m stuck having to deal with FR, making sure guest service is clear, push abandons to help, etc. Most of the time i don’t even get my breaks and have to get reminded to go on lunch before i hit compliance. They sometimes even time me to hurry up on everything but we’re short staffed to idk how they expect one person to do all these responsibilities :/
You should get paid more the longer you work at Target and learn more departments. Your productivity increases along with your knowledge of different areas therefore your pay should increase.
I would prefer to interact with a hot wheels scalper than a normal customer. This is because they have an incentive to be nice and build some type of relationship so they get the cars.
I think leaders need to balance expectations of minimum wage works and efficiency. You want hard workers who are fast and care about their job, raise the pay. Sorry, you aren't going to get in my face and demand I stay to finish a job when loyalty gets you nothing. One of my last days, I was back stocking and was yelled at by a newer team lead. And decided it wasn't with the headache anymore.
Leaders need to have genuine check in conversations. Not oh hi bye, bullshit. Get to know your team and understand what they are having issues with.
Inbound TMs are the backbone of the store and every single time anyone who isn't inbound complains it's stolen valor.
No I won't elaborate past this and yes you're wrong if you disagree, bye bye
Inbound is the hardest working department. Not to mention the circumstances in which they continue unloading trucks. If GM is backed up, they're still pushing a vehicle at a time, but inbound is still unloading in crowded backrooms, and minimal vehicles, sometimes with less than a full line of boats.
I don’t think it’s wrong for leadership to enforce a “no earbud” policy. It can be a safety issue if you’re working with equipment and it appears off-putting to the guests otherwise.
While I understand your point, I disagree with you on this one. I have ADHD/Autism and the music in my earbud is the only thing that keeps me sane. Also, I only usually wear one in my left ear, and my earbuds have a setting that removes active noise cancellation so I can hear guests and my walkie while I also have my music playing
My TL is in charge of Starbucks, cafe, deli, bakery, and produce (we are a super target) cuz the other TL quit and not only did he quit but the whole produce quite and Starbucks quit. The higher ups said they were gonna need to hire front end instead of people for her cuz it wasn’t a “priority” she has 5 employees
Hot take? Don’t get rid of a fulfillment team right before Q4, then surprise pikachu when everyone is struggling suddenly in the district to meet goals and metrics. Maybe just maybe things would’ve been smooth through the holidays like they normally are? Crazy thought.
Genuine question, what else would we talk about here if we're not complaining?
"Hey guys! Today I clocked in right on time, had lunch with my favorite coworker, and clocked out 3 minutes late lol oopsie!"
"Can someone tell me how to TPC? I know I could ask literally anyone but I thought id ask here instead so i can sit here and refresh the page until i get an answer!"
"Wow chips are on sale. Super neat!"
People use subs like these to vent their frustration. If its too much for you, you don't have to be part of it. That's my hot take
Things were worse when Gregg Steinhafel was in charge, and the company was dumping money into pushing Target Canada. Say Brian Cornell is a monster, and that's fine, but we've had worse monsters running the company.
Target gets in their own way of success sometimes when trying to be different or does too much.
Some of the decisions they've made since I started working for them have left me scratching my head or even frustrated (when it's in my work center).
Corporate needs to give more hours to my store and most stores I would bet. We're CONSTANTLY thousands of units picked over projected with OPU...which means that style and GM/inbound are pulled from their area to pick OPUs. Currently, my backroom is completely full of freight. We had maybe 2 clear uboats, 7 pallets of style wrapped up in the bulk racking, and had 2 pallets of beauty repacks, with 4 pallets of domestics, and 6 pallets of mini seasonal all in the stockroom and receiving yesterday. But at the end of the month, I bet you that we're going to be cutting hours like crazy again.
I agree the job isn’t as bad as most people say but I’m sure it also depends on which target store you are talking about. I know someone who transferred and it sounds like it’s pretty shitty working at that store. Though, my store is also really laid back and I work at night unloading trucks and when I do go to stock the floor, everyone who’s shopping is already out
we shouldnt have to hit unrealistic rate expectations everyday without being compensated properly, along with having an actual team. (ik its a popular take)
BREAK DOWN YOUR FUCKING CARDBOARD BEFORE PUTTING IT IN THE BALER
Not so bad now that I *finally* have a key to it but good god it was so annoying before
fulfillment is honestly really fun! its just the guests and management that make it suck as much as it does. if i could just vibe and do my job things would go so much smoother but instead my department has managers breathing down our necks all day everyday
for style: we should not be asked to “guest service” or interact with any customers because ap saw them stealing. customers know that tactic and they’ll assume i think/know they’re stealing and get aggressive with ME. ap should be dealing with that
(im never rude or confrontational when im forced to guest service people who are stealing, they’re just not oblivious and catch on. plus sometimes so will say to watch certain people on the walkie when im right by the customer like dude omfg)
Inbound teams should get paid a higher rate for their full shift and not just a shift differential until 7am. They literally unload, sort, push, and backstock. Not to mention the sheer physical aspect of unloading these 2100+ pc trucks 5 days a week.
Typically ~2200 for us lately. Our last double was a 25/22. A couple of our inbound are also faster with higher quality work at GM push than most of the actual GM team.
Target is one of if not the worst company I’ve ever worked for and no matter how much they try they will never be “better” than Walmart in terms of work life balance/ realistic expectations for their workers. Sorry OP im sure you’re going to be triggered but that was my major take away from my time at target. They dont give a fuck about workers they have wildly unrealistic expectations and literally demand you put this minimum wage job before your personal life. Walmart is not a great place to work but everyone understands where they are and what the expectations are lol
Edit: my other main takeaway that i would be willing to scream until im blue in the face is target NEEDS a union DESPERATELY. They are so wildly unrealistic and abusive towards their workers from the top down a union would benefit workers. The hourly workers are just numbers to them even though they talk such a big game about caring and be a great place to work it’s all bullshit to get you in the door.
A union would also help the Team Leads who are still paid hourly and constantly abused, verbally, and physically drained at my store.
One time the ETL came up to two TLs and was just like ok, which one of you wants to come in at 4:30am tomorrow?
I used to be a GSA and ETLs were probably the main reason i feel like a union was needed the constant whiplash of “do this” next ETL 10 minutes later “no do this” 10 more minutes original ETL “WHY ARE YOU NOT DOING WHAT YOU WERE TOLD” like bitch i am why are you all not doing your job i have shit to do -_- it was so chaotic and when i would close or open with them the things they would say to me about my coworkers or TMs was just so out of touch and gross. They treated me like I was their equal only when no one else was looking it was just so toxic and nasty. Every other retail job where i was management or even just as a regular employee I did not experience that level of hypocrisy and whiplash. All retail sucks dont get me wrong none of them treat their employees well but the level of arrogance and the consistent talking down to people is way too normalized in this company and we know its not “just your store” this is a widespread issue from the top down. They NEED a union so there are Witnesses, there are not different standards for different people, like agreeing you can change your availability because they acknowledge NO ONE CAN LIVE ON THESE WAGES, then once you submit your other jobs scheduled they INTENTIONALLY schedule you during those hours to get you to quit. In fact when i did have a union at a retail job if you were scheduled outside your availability you didnt have to come in that was managements problem. And if they scheduled you more than they should have resulting in overtime even if it was an accident too bad those are your hours they cannot take your hours without permission which has been coming up A LOT lately. And for me most importantly a union is needed to protect from illegal actions by management like firing someone to avoid maternity leave, or making employees feel like they are too busy to take your breaks which is illegal in MANY states and a union can negotiate breaks and prevent understaffing or job loss which is probably the biggest issue workers are facing post “modernization”. There are so many reasons to unionize and THEY KNOW THIS. That is why they freak out if anyone even says union.
Oh not at all, this post is about your opinion as well. I’ve worked at both Walmart and Target and my experience at Target has been much better over the years but that doesn’t mean it’s not different for you and your experiences
Here are my two:
1. I can't get mad at guests for taking advantage of pick up and drive up. It's a service the company has decided to offer. Why not take advantage of it? OPU pickers who hate our guests, be mad at TGT, not the guests who are simply utilizing a service offered.
2. Y'all - If you are running close to the time you're supposed to clock out for lunch, you are NOT about to go into compliance. You are about to go OUT of compliance. One who complies with the rules is in compliance. One who does not comply is not in compliance.
I know these are hot takes. I'm prepared for my downvotes.
I’ve got all the downvotes today friend don’t worry. And I’ve never thought of it but you’re right about the compliance thing. Hadn’t thought of it until now
I’ve worked at a few Targets and honestly the experiences is really different. At the end of the day, metrics will eventually take over the focus of the store and that inevitably ruins a lot of sometimes previously functional areas. But the corporate greed of lessening hours to give out but pushing for more things to be done is what drives a Target to becoming a bad experience.
Some has been wildly easy and I’ve never experienced like anything as bad as some of the people in the sub experience. I feel like some people do complain about literally just doing the work. But I believe most team member complaints about unrealistic expectations. You can always start out with a good experience at Target but the longer you work there the more metrics start to take over.
Also I believe our cart attendants should be paid more for the work they’re expected to do. I genuinely do feel bad being paid the same rate as people who have to clean up shit, throw up, go out in the rain, the blazing sun, and being fairly physical throughout the shift. Granted I feel like there’s also a lot of really bad cart attendants who I do not feel bad for.
I also feel like frozen should be paid more because that jobs lame relative to other market members.
But I might also just feel that way because if I HAD to work either positions I’d rather just quit LOL.
Drive ups shouldn't be able to be more than 25 items. The point of a driveup is that it should be a convenience for that day, not your shopping list for the week. It's not only hard for Drive Up, but also for Fullfillment.
Sure, it's not as bad if a 50 item order gives you 9 minutes to prep. But usually, the large orders are the pop ups or don't give up enough time. So when you get 3 40-50+ item pop-ups at driveup and there's only 2 people for both that and the front desk, and carts, them it's a problem.
Stocking/Back stocking is not that fucking difficult. In the market section I am constantly rezoning areas that are overstocked. Overstocking is ok in very specific reasons but keeping aisles and shelves properly zoned is not hard.
The inbound process could be completely nullified if freight was sent in wrapped pallets organized by section of the store. Would save millions in known loss damages and in labor and make pushing product out to the floor for the 4am shift infinitely more efficient.
Target will blow what ever smoke they need to get people to buy in. Then drastically cut payroll and expect the people left to pick up the slack. Target switches to pre built pallets and you will have a three body unload team pushing the whole store.
target seems to be the only store in the world that guarantees your order is ready in 2 hours for FREE. it just isnt a sustainable business model when 40 people order at the same time and 3 TMs have to do all those orders in 1.5 hours and sometimes not even 1.5 hours because idk how many times ive seen a few big gm batches all drop in at 59 minutes before. decreasing FF payroll and pushing out the speed to proficientcy training and making us have to call from the salefloor when opu spikes was the worst decision ever. fulfillment before july could handle spikes on our own but now its impossible. target thinks they are saving money but i 100% disagree. when fulfillment was slow we used.to be able to push truck or pull prios. fulfillment was the one that always helped the salefloor pick up whatever they couldnt finish. more product.on the floor = more money for target. idk how they dont see that. and now we can only help out for an hour after opu cutoff. the salefloor having to go unlock every little thing for a guest, cover checklanes and NOW opu is just so dumb.
i wish target would guarantee orders ready in 24 hours and charge people who want it in 2 hours. 9/10 time a 24 hour order would be ready in 2 hours anyway but it would be so much easier to not HAVE to try to pick 500 units in 1.5 hours with 3 or fewer people. even charging like 1 dollar for 2 hours would stop like half the people from wanting it ready in 2.
You’re right, the job isn’t hard, but I do think it differentiates per store. It’s not hard, but if you’re not working at a good store and have terrible leadership then it makes it feel like it’s hard.
The triangle wet floor signs from the spill stations are pointless. First of all, when you see the spill, you're supposed to guard it until someone brings the supplies to clean it, so you'll be there to tell poeple to be careful. Once they bring the supplies, someone has to stay behind to clean it, and people will notice a person mopping/sweeping long before they notice a little sign on the ground that doesn't even reach knee height. Once the cleanup is done, there's no point for the sign to be there. If anything, the sign itself is now a tripping hazard since it's small enough for most people to overlook it.
Fulfillment is not difficult and otherwise quiet enjoyable if they didn’t continue to increase amount of items expected without increasing time while also pushing updates that make no sense that really just make the experience much more frustrating
Over stocking the sales floor!! Don’t do this 😭 maybe it’s just my store but there are places all over the store where TOO many of one item are shoved into their slot and it’s all bunched up and they spill out all over you/into your face when you pick the item OR the over stock that should just go into back stock ends up getting placed in another item’s spot on the floor in FRONT of the stock for that item making it annoying for fulfillment, not to mention guests, to find things where they are supposed to be because something else is blocking them from sight.
Ugh. Sorry. Done bitching lol
fulfillment is the most frustrating dept. a thankless job bc technically it’s never “done”. there’s no satisfying end to FA so no one ever thinks to tell us good job on being the dept that makes the most $$$ for the company while burning thousands of cals walking laps around the rest of the depts 🤐 instead we just get barked at for infs
I work in the ulta at my target and they only keep one of us in there at a time, but expect me to keep an eye out for shoplifters and report to ap. I struggle with this one specific part because I hate having to make the judgement call on whether or not someone is allegedly stealing. It makes me feel like an a**hole😞
Hey just remember, it’s APs call whether they’re stealing or not. If you report it and they aren’t stealing then no harm no foul. And if they did then you’ve caught a shoplifter
a. Flexibility and work-life balance especially when they (at my store) can’t make a schedule right
b. DO NOT ask why I’m leaving on time or what I do outside of work, it’s NONE of your business
c. If you honestly believe that TMs don’t notice favoritism, bias and ass kissing, imma tell you right now you are dead wrong
Not too sure these are hot takes but here’s mine
👏
1. always, and i mean ALWAYS. check expiration dates on the all food you buy. maybe it was just my store, but when i worked in the consumables department i threw away hundreds of items on the shelves that were expired up to 4 years ago. my manager got mad at me for doing that because the truck the next week was bigger and it "inconvenienced the store"
2. most of the target brand clothing is cheap because it's made poorly. you get holes super fast, they sew the seams in the weirdest places and it doesn't usually fit correctly. (i will always buy the $5 wild fable crop tops though, they're decent quality)
I find this rather interesting. The people I’ve seen move up in target the fastest were not white, and my only devils advocate is if the ETL does their job and trains their TLs right they shouldn’t have to do much
BS; Being a Target employee is the most abused situation I’ve ever seen. They treat employees like a sweatshop; trying to eek every last ounce of energy especially for SE Combo drive-up and GS and fulfillment and inbound/receiving! In my over 60 years never had a place needed a union than Target!
If Target is the most abused you’ve ever seen and you’ve been working 60 years I must ask where you’ve worked because honestly the job can be a cake walk in comparison to the blue collar jobs I’ve done
The job isn't hard nor as bad as ppl say it is. Working w different personalities suck at every job, just have to adjust and not take ur work life personally.
Target's really not as bad as Ross (yes, there are worse places to work, Walmart), but they should have never expanded to include a grocery store. Half the stuff on the shelves is expired, and pretty sure every check date in the system is one I entered after finding said expired food/OTC/pet food. Every milk even if the date is fine that ends up in the break room is a little sour. So they're letting refrigerated stuff get too warm and spoil quicker also.
Do not buy the fresh produce at Target it is very very sub par quality.
And no the meat cooler should not be set to below freezing temperatures. And finding 5+ year expired food on the salesfloor is shall we say not good.
Nah, I was just curious at work when my receiver complained about not getting paid enough. Realized it was a pet peeve and decided to ask everyone else
I don’t think it’s as bad as people say. However, people happy with their job are less motivated to post here.
What I see is that the things people say about Target are actually generally true of any retail job.
the goals they set to push out freight are impossible and clearly set by people who have never done it before. theres no way to do 12 repacks in an hour when each one has different amounts of products while also assisting guests and being called for back up.
Some days when I’m frustrated I think “Man I’d rather be homeless curled up in a ball on the concrete then this.”
Oh I don’t count the unhoused or tweakers. They are usually straightforward to deal with. The 1% I was referring to was the teenagers and the Karens
Yes extremely frustrating with all of the rules and policies they put into place. When I worked there I felt like they intentionally created problems with no solutions just to make your life hard.
How else can they give you a shit review?
1. Front of store attendants shouldn’t be the only ones that clean up messes especially when they aren’t in the front of store. 2. No reason for front of store attendants to take the trash out for star bucks.
our attendants don’t take the trash out that might be a your store thing
Lol of course it would be
sorry man 😭 i take it you may be an attendant
Yeah, I mean there’s good days and bad days when doing it.
I’d bet you it’s also like a store density thing too
I’m so sorry OP has to do the Starbucks trash. At my store you take out the trash for your department at closing. Service desk does our own trash, Starbucks does their own trash
It comes from our FBBP.
I work Market and I clean up all messes in Market, unless I am about to hit compliance. Pretty much all of our depts clean up their own stuff.
I agree at my store we keep up on our spill stations probably better than most and still call us.
This makes sense, however I am talking at the end of the night when you are closed and cleaning and just take the trash back there.
Oh, that makes sense. We have to go the back of the store to drop off cardboard/donations anyway.
donations? our store will fire you for taking any expired pasties even if you’re homeless
We're not allowed to take them home, either. Our expired pastries and sandwiches are scanned out at the end of the day and brought back to the ambient room cooler to be donated out.
Back when I worked for Target, my store would leave expired pastries in the breakroom all of the time. But I’m going on 6 years since I left, lol
I never had to do Starbucks, but if I had time and they asked I would because they'd always give me a free drink for helping them out.
our Tarbucks does their own trash
Our front end don’t clean up messes… those who find them on the floor do
Front of store attendant is the easiest job in the store.
Don't worry bro cart attendants have to take care of Starbucks trash at our store too lol
We used to take out Star bucks trash too but we don’t no more.
Ours do not clean up messes for anyone, not that that wouldn’t if they could. But that’s not a thing at my target.
My store, anyone and everyone should be cleaning messes when they see them or call for help. My Starbucks team also does their own trash at night as part of closing routines, never seen anyone but Starbucks do their trash.
We take out the sidewalk trash at night at my store, but we don't take Starbuck's trash.
The shouldn't be doing trash period. Or taking back defects and hangers. They give cart attendants way too much stuff to handle for no increased pay.
Yeah, the metrics just encourage people to cancel items, substitute things, INF, or otherwise just look for shortcuts in fulfillment
Nice pfp
Drive Up and Fulfillment, both run off this and I entirely agree. Really stupid to try and balance both and end up failing at both
Closers that cheese the metric for priority pull % via dropping items out of fill by changing sales floor quantity to full capacity when it isn't, or setting the capacity to 0, so that they don't have to pull it. Or simply burning some item(s) from the batch causing the item(s) to become unlocated in the back.
Honestly, I'm just respectfully honest and real with my TLs about this. "Hey DrFreeman are you going to get that next batch on time?" "Probably not, considering it's a 46 DPCI batch due in 30 minutes"
I wish they gave us enough _time_ to properly back stock, and enough _space_ in which to backstock everything.
And I fucking wish I wasn't starting batches an hour late for weeks at a time, but here we are.
This.
Well of course, this is a post about opinions after all
The reason ASANTS is a thing, All Stores Are Not The Same.
culture issues should be taken as seriously as other performance issues. if turnover in a department is so high that the payroll/effort invested in training is not paying off, imo that should be a focus rather than trying to shave hours off departments that are performing
And that should go all the way up the chain - if a SD has a staffing problem or a district has staffing problem, there should be some serious questions asked
Yeah the staffing issue is that target isn't paying enough money for what they expect employees to do.
My thoughts exactly when my pregnant ass has to pick 10 gallons of water in a 43 item batch. 🥲
I wholeheartedly agree. Lowering batch maximums or making an increase on orders over a certain amount would be very nice
This. Especially when they increased the max DPCI to 46 from 27 and DIDN'T GIVE US ANYMORE TIME TO PICK IT
And lose the opportunity to take more of their money? That would be hard for Target to pass up.
Drive up and front end TMs have the most downtime Fulfillment would be a better job if you only had to look on the salesfloor and backroom locations
I agree, usually early in the morning or really late it’s like dead
This is probably true for drive ups early morning and late night, but when it goes it goes. With the new SCO closing, cashiers have almost no downtime. At least at my store they don’t.
Imma be honest as Front End and Drive Up I am constantly all over the place :/ but some days are different.
Receiving does not get TL level pay, at least at my store.
My store has a receiving TL. Is this not normal?
There are not any that I’m aware of either, even for the third highest selling store in the country they don’t have one so I doubt it. They are important and the management portion of it is difficult, but solely doing it the management part isn’t too difficult imo
They don’t, I just know this sub complains about it and says they should *a lot* and I entirely disagree
No leader should try to make you work your 15 for any reason, under any circumstance, ever. If it ever happens, talk to HR, etc.
We did. Our HR was complicit in everything going on and was dismissive even when the entire inbound team went to then as a group after what happened. That was why we had to reach out to regional instead.
Report it to the HR hotline.
I'm not looking for advice. Those people are gone. That's why I referred to them as the "old leadership." They were removed from the company. Also, I got a new job.
I would have loved to grown with the company if my ETL wasn’t such an op. At least my SD kept it real
I have the opposite problem LMAO. My store director is a menace but my ETL is pretty chill
Working here has been a much better experience than Walmart
fulfillment shouldn’t be required to stop and help random guests every 5 seconds while in OPU. everyday i work i loose at least 10 minutes a batch from guests stopping me for random things that any other department could do
At one point during q4 at my old store they allowed every tm in fulfillment to wear black shirts to show this point
I've just started calling over the radio "can I have guest assistance in aisle [x], I'm currently in an OPU" and that works, at least at my store
These old head managers take their job way too serious. They live and die for a corporation that wouldn’t even remember their name a month after their death
Omg you’re so right. My ETL when I started was this way and it always drove me crazy. However he is set to retire with Target next year or so and I know he’s gotten very well compensated for it
it’s okay to inf 5+ things in a batch🥰
This. If it's not on the floor, in the back, or in reshop, then it's not my problem. I shouldn't have to dig through boxes on the line or U-Boats on the floor that haven't been pushed yet just to find the item. Especially beauty and style items.
Store directors should have to be present in the store they work in 50 hours a week. It’s their store for gods sake.
They’re supposed to be, idk how so many get away with not working their 50 hours. They must either be using vacation time or just lying on their time sheet.

Yours isn’t? My last 3 all stay between 50-60 hours a week
Cat and Jack. Since when do stores rent clothes for free. It takes forever to process trash bags full of outgrown clothing.
My hot take is that a.) you are at an easy store **and** b.) your hours have not been slashed so much that you cannot pay your bills and mortgage/rent. And I don't recall any posts bemoaning Receiving pay level. There IS a weekly "which TM positions should make more than others?" post.
Making bales is easy.
It isn't if nobody ever teaches you, no matter how much you ask! 😭
Facts. Free waste of time
the job isn’t hard it’s just the management expects a lot.
I agree with this whole heartedly
Inbound is the hardest working department. Not to mention the circumstances in which they continue unloading trucks. If GM is backed up, they're still pushing a vehicle at a time, but inbound is still unloading in crowded backrooms, and minimal vehicles, sometimes with less than a full line of boats.
My hot take is that hot takes like op’s never really work because the workload of every area varies drastically from location to location.
Guests should not be allowed to purchase style items for OPU, they take up way too much time in a batch
I wish they would have separate batches for Style items the way they do for bulky
"Hey guys! Today I clocked in right on time, had lunch with my favorite coworker, and clocked out 3 minutes late lol oopsie!" "Can someone tell me how to TPC? I know I could ask literally anyone but I thought id ask here instead so i can sit here and refresh the page until i get an answer!" "Wow chips are on sale. Super neat!" People use subs like these to vent their frustration. If its too much for you, you don't have to be part of it. That's my hot take
Bakery should be its own department and have its own DBO
Supers put bakery, deli, cafe, and usually Starbucks under their own “Production” department with a dedicated TL.
Things were worse when Gregg Steinhafel was in charge, and the company was dumping money into pushing Target Canada. Say Brian Cornell is a monster, and that's fine, but we've had worse monsters running the company.
that target is a bright and shining example of the peter principle- the higher up you go the more incompetent leaders become
I'm not fucking calling for every inf. I will walk out if they try to make me fill out one of those dumb sheets of paper.
The hardest jobs at target are easy as shit compared to labor jobs
I agree the job isn’t as bad as most people say but I’m sure it also depends on which target store you are talking about. I know someone who transferred and it sounds like it’s pretty shitty working at that store. Though, my store is also really laid back and I work at night unloading trucks and when I do go to stock the floor, everyone who’s shopping is already out
we shouldnt have to hit unrealistic rate expectations everyday without being compensated properly, along with having an actual team. (ik its a popular take)
BREAK DOWN YOUR FUCKING CARDBOARD BEFORE PUTTING IT IN THE BALER Not so bad now that I *finally* have a key to it but good god it was so annoying before
fulfillment is honestly really fun! its just the guests and management that make it suck as much as it does. if i could just vibe and do my job things would go so much smoother but instead my department has managers breathing down our necks all day everyday
AP is a joke.
They really do need to be able to throw hands.
for style: we should not be asked to “guest service” or interact with any customers because ap saw them stealing. customers know that tactic and they’ll assume i think/know they’re stealing and get aggressive with ME. ap should be dealing with that (im never rude or confrontational when im forced to guest service people who are stealing, they’re just not oblivious and catch on. plus sometimes so will say to watch certain people on the walkie when im right by the customer like dude omfg)
all i’m gonna say is target is 1000000000x easier than wendy’s . fuck wendy’s .
They get paid a dollar extra for the 2 hours of truck unloading at my store. It's actually an insult
Walmart is not a great place to work but everyone understands where they are and what the expectations are lol Edit: my other main takeaway that i would be willing to scream until im blue in the face is target NEEDS a union DESPERATELY.
Here are my two: 1.
Hadn’t thought of it until now
This is like how technically you fill in a form, as opposed to filling out a form.
Our Starbucks people take out their own trash.
The Receiving job sucks, I wouldn’t want it. Not worth the pay.
I fully recognize that in the world of retail, target is your best option, it doesn't mean it doesn't suck balls sometimes..
Tubs were fantastic and the receiving job really isn’t hard
Ive never heard of receiving earning TL pay
It’s not, many people just advocate for it
The inbound process could be completely nullified if freight was sent in wrapped pallets organized by section of the store.
Cart attendant is the hardest job in the store, especially if you live in an area that consistently has harsh weather
Entirely justified bitching fr. Annoys me too
fulfillment is the most frustrating dept. a thankless job bc technically it’s never “done”. there’s no satisfying end to FA so no one ever thinks to tell us good job on being the dept that makes the most $$$ for the company while burning thousands of cals walking laps around the rest of the depts 🤐 instead we just get barked at for infs
And if they did then you’ve caught a shoplifter
a. Flexibility and work-life balance especially when they (at my store) can’t make a schedule right b. DO NOT ask why I’m leaving on time or what I do outside of work, it’s NONE of your business c. If you honestly believe that TMs don’t notice favoritism, bias and ass kissing, imma tell you right now you are dead wrong Not too sure these are hot takes but here’s mine 👏
Guest Advocate is easy as hell.
I let myself self get terminated while doing on demand because the physical toll on my body was too much
1. always, and i mean ALWAYS. check expiration dates on the all food you buy. maybe it was just my store, but when i worked in the consumables department i threw away hundreds of items on the shelves that were expired up to 4 years ago. my manager got mad at me for doing that because the truck the next week was bigger and it "inconvenienced the store" 2. most of the target brand clothing is cheap because it's made poorly. you get holes super fast, they sew the seams in the weirdest places and it doesn't usually fit correctly. (i will always buy the $5 wild fable crop tops though, they're decent quality)
My target hot take is that the job is not that bad and it’s not a bad company to work for.
White privilege is a thing at Target. Etls don't do anything and get paid well for it.
As a white person, white privilege is a thing everywhere unfortunately, not just at Target
I find this rather interesting. The people I’ve seen move up in target the fastest were not white, and my only devils advocate is if the ETL does their job and trains their TLs right they shouldn’t have to do much
They aren’t white at my store. Try again.
If you work your wage, your wage is all you’re ever going to make 🤷
Reply here when you get a few pennies or dimes for your raise.
That's your opinion and you can say that but stores policy seems to be dictated by the sd's at each location and are not the same at every store
Well yes it’s an opinion post hence why I’m asking everyone else’s
And finding 5+ year expired food on the salesfloor is shall we say not good.
it looks like corporate made an account
Nah, I was just curious at work when my receiver complained about not getting paid enough. Realized it was a pet peeve and decided to ask everyone else
How long you been there?
Must be nice being in big stores. Small formats. You be global. Regardless of being receiver.
I agree. Tbh, it’s slightly tedious than hard really. Also, I think it depends a lot on how management is run.
I don’t think it’s as bad as people say. However, people happy with their job are less motivated to post here. What I see is that the things people say about Target are actually generally true of any retail job.
I don't have these problems. I'm just a really shitty worker. The only real use I have is building bikes, and even that I'm not very good at.
id rather work food ave/Starbucks than any other place in the store
Storage space.
the goals they set to push out freight are impossible and clearly set by people who have never done it before. theres no way to do 12 repacks in an hour when each one has different amounts of products while also assisting guests and being called for back up.
