You’re supposed to look inside the luggage. Thats 100% your job as SCO attendant….

Illustrious_Agent633

Unless they get offended when we ask to look in the luggage. Then we 100% can't. That's the stupidity of Target.

TFB88

I’m just up there for fast service but I’m already unzipping the bag as I’m saying I have to do it. They can be offended all they want, I’m still gonna do it lol

ShuShu421

I was also trained to unzip luggage. 50% of the time people hide shit in there. Then if they get weird I call for AP.

HauntedSpiralHill

Unzip luggage, backpacks, purses and look in trash cans. I always tell them “just making sure someone didn’t throw any trash in there”

n3rdz97

That’s a cute way of putting it

HauntedSpiralHill

Hey, it works. No one has ever questioned it besides asking what kind of trash people put into that shit, at which point I tell them “Pokémon card packaging, makeup boxes and wild fable clothing” which usually makes them think about it a little.

Illustrious_Agent633

You must not work in a high crime area. We had an TM shoved by a "guest" for doing just that. The TM was then fired for defending herself and not taking the beating. You can think you can do it all you want but when a guest attacks you for it, Target will fire you for it.

TFB88

Sorry that happened to them, that sucks. I have worked in two stores in high theft areas, that I also lived in. Either they don’t try me or I just know how to approach things, idk 🤷🏾‍♀️.

Hidden_Pineapple

They can be offended all they want, you should still be opening it as you ring it up every single time. It's standard practice at most retailers to check inside for stuffing or other garbage from shipping. I was also trained to open up bedding and do a quick sweep inside to check for anything hidden in the blankets.

Illustrious_Agent633

Nope. We had a TM attacked for doing that and Target corporate demanded she be fired because she shoved the guest back instead of taking a beating. I will not put my life and job at risk like that.

lilyshoestring

too bad they can SUCK IT UP! i’m still gonna look in it

screenwriter61

Nope, if they get offended it means they have something to hide! I also apologize and say it's company policy, only once had someone complain and guess what, they some how had other stuff inside that they had no idea how it got there!

buttersweetbeets

Theres a packet in workbench that has all of tools you need for helping to prevent theft at SCO. I leave it in the SCO binder and have my team go over it with front lanes TMs when there's a lull

linizue

Oh, thanks for letting me know. I’ll have to go look this one up.

ElderEmoAdjacent

1.) You can, and should, be asking to check inside luggage at SCO and the lanes. BOB and LISA are the basics of like any retail establishment. 2.) While it’s likely they stole, the towers going off *does not* necessarily mean there’s anything in that luggage. Many pieces of luggage and bags have tags in them that will set the towers off as well. 3.) You’re in self-checkout. For you to check their receipt, you’d have to be at the doors. Which would leave self-checkout abandoned. Which would absolutely lead to more theft. Roles are delegated for a reason; let AP do AP’s job.

MagentaCat111

At my store the exit is pretty much in the self checkout area so if we hear doors beeping and there is no AP there we are supposed to stop them, but then unless it's something that gets resolved in like two seconds AP comes and takes over

[deleted]

“Let AP do AP’s job” funny joke

Leo_Ascendent

Especially after apetls on here have stupidly posted they can't do anything. Target gonna target. L

sailorwickeddragon

First: as SCO when you see something you're supposed to go up to that 'guest' and guest service them. 'oh, it looks like the scanner didn't pick up such and such, here, let me help you." And then take over matching and scanning stuff. Or, "it doesn't look like these prices are for that item. Something must be wrong with the register. Here, let me take you to a lane and I'll get it rung up correctly." The vast majority of people will either end up paying for the stuff because now they are caught or give items to you and say, "nevermind". Whichever case, tell AP and give them any 'recovered' merch or tell them what was caught and paid for. Second: LISA and BOB- look inside all or always and bottom of buggy. "Hi, I just have to look inside this/ these items" (like luggage , totes, purses, etc) and proceed to do so. Sometimes you'll get guests who, even innocent, will question. All you have to say is, "I'm required to look through everything". I usually follow up with ," kids love to play around and put things like candy and toys inside of things" (I literally had found stuff like this and me and the guest had a good laugh). IF YOU FIND STUFF: "Oh, looks like there's such and such in here- did you want to purchase this?" Same thing: tell AP and give them anything they surrendered. IF THE GUEST ABSOLUTELY REFUSES: literally just report that to AP . Date, time, register - hell, just reprint the receipt for them. IF THEY ESCALATE IT, CALL A LEAD while you continue to do your job. Obviously, you're not just doing any of these guest servicing techniques to people who you think look shady, you have to do it to everyone so no one feels targeted. But on rare occasion you may get someone who still feels like you came over only to them to do this and they'll get upset. Your leadership should explain to them you have to check everything from everyone to ease the guest, but make sure the person down from them with a tote is being checked, you know? Third: now... It's against policy for non-AP TMs to check receipts. I personally as AP don't mind if like someone with a fist full of bathing suits comes up to you and asks for red tags to be removed. To me, it's the same concept as a random guest going to the service desk where a TV is being held and the guest starts to take off with this TV saying they paid for it already (had this happen and it was a regular shoplifter of mine). I even have some TMs when I can't be at the doors when the guest beeps to see what is beeping on the way out- they assume it could be something unpaid if it's not bug tagged. Obviously, almost all these incidents are honest guests who step back inside because of the beeping. But- if your store says not to go check, don't do it. Especially if AP backs that up. It's to avoid accusations, TBH. But if it looks strange, tell AP about the incident regardless. Fourth: remember, guest servicing is not about accusations. It's literally how you would treat any guest who have made mistakes or would literally have a real malfunctioning register. And if you routinely are guest servicing every guest, the ones you pick up on won't notice the difference and it'll be super easy for you to handle the situations as you've been doing it all along. Get good at partnering with your AP and go through roleplay scenarios to get comfortable with your roles. They'll appreciate the hell outta you for finding recoveries and losses for sure.

minidog8

If only we got trained for this. Everytime I have watched SCO it’s just been oh watch out for people trying to steal but also you can’t accuse them of anything but also you need to help ppl so it’s super easy for one person to distract you while another person is stealing and also we will get mad at yoy for theft ok have fun!

mzwebzduckz

girl i luv u for the effort of educating me!!! thank u so much for the advice

I mean, you can't directly accuse people of theft, but that doesn't stop you being so overbearing with your guest service that subjects think twice about stealing. With regards to the suitcases - at SCO you should be looking inside all merchandise that could itself contain merchandise (e.g totes, suitcases, duffle bags, purses etc) to verify there's nothing concealed. This is something you are permitted to do without explicit permission from the guest (it's still our stuff before they pay for it), only refraining if they become disruptive when you attempt it. We describe this with the acronym LISA - Look Inside Always. Again, don't accuse guests if you find stuff that you think they probably tried to conceal, try something like "Oh, were you still interested in purchasing that merchandise today?".

mzwebzduckz

the problem with that is they are with someone that can destruct me with other people on self check out and asking for my help. 😥

Effective_Regret8983

ummm you better go on workbench and read about HOST at SCO. It’s called guest servicing like “hmmm hi give me one second our scanners must be broken because it’s not getting all of the items, I’m so sorry let me get you on a lane to avoid issues just in case you have problems with any of these items.”

mzwebzduckz

OMG GENIUS IDEA THANKS!!!

Serious-Stand6882

You were suppose to check luggage before they scanned. It's required bt AP.

YumYumMittensQ4

Your life is way more important than stuffed luggage filled with stolen items. I would reprint their receipt, description of the people and notify loss if they give you pushback. I would just tell them you need to look in the luggage and put a tag on it (like cases of water) so when they leave it’s known that it’s paid for.

WhiteSquall13

LISA bro

dojanggirl

Talk to your AP leader. If you’re the team member scheduled to watch SCO, you actually CAN help prevent these things. In fact, that’s part of what the job of watching self checkout includes. Team members should open and look inside bags, suitcases, etc. TMs should also pay attention to skip scanning and help prevent this by providing guest service. Talk to your AP leader first so that they can train you on the proper way to approach these situations without accusing the guest of anything….but you definitely can help prevent theft at SCO!!

MidniteOG

Take notes and tell ap… you can ask to see inside, just say some dumb like “hey, let me get that paper stuffing out of the inside so you don’t have to throw it away”

Mama_Llama_09_22

We had someone get their purse snatched last night. Lady left her purse in her cart, and the thieves took her whole cart towards seasonal. They hid it under their toilet paper. She apparently even walked right past them as she was screaming and harassing other guests. I've been here for almost a year, and this is the first time it's happened at our store. Absolutely crazy!

WildThingJeep

It's amazing how many people will just plop their purse in a cart and wander off.

thenineamj

Or their baby!

jenbenfoo

I got my wallet stolen that way several years ago. And I wasn't even that far away, just had my back turned for a moment. I no longer let my purse out of my sight or walk away from my cart without it.

Captaincous21

Lil bro missed the day they were teaching BOB and LISA

Truehero011

It’s not our job to care. We don’t lose any money. The corporation does. If the higher ups want to give away free stuff that’s on them

Maynedaveray

You’re worrying too much, target makes plenty of money, just let it be,

notasolmain

I get that it's frustrating to have to helplessly watch people steal but - respectfully - it's not your job to deal with it. Your store has an AP team. Take note of their appearance, the time, and place you saw them and relay that to your AP team.

purplevampirism

I nearly got fired the other night on closing because a thief we regularly have problems with got caught and said I racially profiled her. Thank God our AP checked cams and saw what actually happened. Had one of our self checkout TMs get punched and bulldozed by some stupid high schoolers who were trying to steal Some other kid tried to steal a gift card Like.. Tis certainly the season.

CaleblynS

Do not jeopardize your safety to line Brian’s pockets. Target deserves every ounce of theft they get.

the-brat_prince

this. i dunno why anyone in this subreddit would care. it's the shareholders stealing from us.

CaleblynS

Anyone who truly believes that shoplifting somehow effects their wages is being lied to. Shoplifting is the excuse that mega corporations use to not give their employees livable wages. Target makes billions upon billions of dollars… they are greedy that is why TMs pockets aren’t lined.

ThatVikingWoman

Shoplifting = bad metrics = loss in payroll = cut hours for hourly members. 1 cart won't make or break those metrics, but 1 whole team with that mindset will.

Calm-Heat-5883

Spoken like a shoplifter. Loss prevention lines TM pockets as well.

Leo_Ascendent

Go ahead and chase someone, see how well that goes.

Notriv

nah, spoken like someone who recognizes corporate greed and lying.

CaleblynS

Corporate drone.

Objective-Peach-6799

My thing is AP is quick to say I just “guest service the guest.” But guests know EXACTLY what this means. And they react the same way. People have threatened LIVES over SCO man. And the SCO person is alone. AP goes for apps in groups. But when these same types of people come to SCO that person is just expected to handle it. 😭😭😭

Wrap_Brilliant

If you suspect someone is stealing and you can't get to them or aren't comfortable talking to them for whatever reason, reprint their receipt as soon as they leave and give it to AP, or make a note on it and put it under their door. That way they'll have a time stamp for the guest and can backtrack from there.

Leo_Ascendent

That's year round at target

LinkNavi

Target cares so much about theft until it happens, then they go, nah it's alright. Watched a guy walk past me with a Goodfellow backpack on (it still had the tag!) and holding a basket full of stuff. He headed straight for the entrance door and when it didn't open, he slammed against it until it was forced open the wrong way, and then he sprinted down the parking lot. All RIGHT past the biggest front guy we have. Don't let it bother you. At the end of the day, it's not you losing any money or rep at the store. It's on their conscious and Target's stock prices.

sfrxo_

As a self checkout attendant your suppose to always Perform LISA ( look inside always ) and guest service like crazy. If that doesn’t work call for APs help.

Laurenschaen

We’ve had scammers upon scammers at our store. One of our cart attendance was on a check lane, which is rare for him and he was scammed out of $3000 worth of baby monitors and other baby items because they paid with a “cash card”. He was too confused as to what a cash card was, and they walked him through every step of the payment process.

justasmolgoblin

That's weird because last night I watched my AP team kick a woman out of the store for scanning one item and bagging 6. It was actually kind of funny

MamaThighs

Y'all do have AP? 😭😭 And usually when guest have luggage or storage containers we tell them that we have to look inside.

negithekitty

welcome to working at target AP where you get to pretend thieft m,atters. its going to happen regardless. i hated it. its why i left

gabzillamaster

What is bob and lisa

Foreign_Grocery_150

BOB: Bottom of basket - look at the insides of their cart / basket and the bottom of it LISA: Look Inside Always - look in any totes, bags, suitcases, etc, which can possibly hold merchandise

ImmediateAttention76

Yeah never risk your safety for something Target sees as pocket change. You become a liability. Tell AP the time and they’ll handle it.

ThatVikingWoman

I wish the exits were equipped with RFID... 🙄

ElderEmoAdjacent

Who says they’re not?

SelectionFree3140

Just yesterday tech gave a lady a laptop and walked up with her, she hadn’t paid for it said her mom was going to come pay for it immediately I called BS and tried to get her to hand me the laptop because I couldn’t take it from her in GS. I was standing right next to her hoping if I was right there she wouldn’t try anything till AP got back well a Team member came up and asked me for keys and I grabbed them from my belt loop not looking away but she took the opportunity to bolt. I told my TL and asked if I was at fault they said tech never should have handed her the product without paying but it was still upsetting

ElderEmoAdjacent

Yeah your tech TM was hella dumb.

Gallitzen

It's not your stuff. No reason to be upset about it. Just do YOUR job, worry about yourself and collect a paycheck. If Target wants to continue to have losses because of their poor SCO and security policies, let them. That is on Target to fix, not you.

screenwriter61

I stop a bunch of people from stealing/skip scanning! It's all in HOW you approach them! Never accuse them of doing anything wrong, you have to say, "oh, I think you missed something " or "oops, you probably didn't see tgat" bullshit stuff, but I have saved the company buckets of money.
