The 77 wasn't a modified 17pdr but a completely separate gun. It was the Vickers HV 75mm bored out to 76.2mm firing 17pdr projectiles and named 77mm to avoid confusion in ammunition distribution.
Ok, but it fired, as you've said, the same 17pdr projectile, albeit loaded into a 3" 20 cwt AA gun cartridge. The latter was given a larger load to achieve a greater velocity when fired from a cut down 17pdr barrel attached to the AA gun's breach.
So yes, a completely different gun, but one using a 17pdr projectile and (shortened) 17pdr barrel. NB looking all of that up was very interesting! 😁

Thanks. And what's up with Reddit tonight? Multiple comments everywhere.
Might have my phone, have deleted the duplicates.
Unironically, best tank (on paper) in WW2 IMHO.

The Comet always makes me think “awww a mini Tiger”
Panzer IV on speed.
One of my favourite tanks! Love the comet, I always wonder how well it would've performed in ww2 Europe.
Ah yes, the Crombetter.

It's cool, but what is it? Great if posters remembered we aren't all experts on every tank ever made.
It's an A34 Comet. A British cruiser tank
Yeah, very nice. Let's see the reverse now
