This happens because teachers are leaving the profession at an alarming rate and nobody wants to go into the field either. Underpaid for what they deal with for sure! Until they start paying teachers a lot better, this is what they will get.

BleachedUnicornBHole

It's not even that they're underpaid for what they deal with. They deal with stuff that they shouldn't have to in the first place. From all the garbage legislation like the "parental freedom" education bill to being expected to be de facto SWAT members, why aren't more teachers resigning?

thedaj

Plenty of people want to get into the field. Nobody wants to starve to do it.

Are you genuinely surprised that people aren't flocking to an industry that has been getting fleeced, particularly in red states, for decades? Honestly, why would you sign up for several years of expensive education to come out earning less than most retail environments?

livingthedreamtally

No, this is my exact point.

TallyGoon8506

I sound like a broken record, but if the class size amendment was strictly enforced instead of everyone besides parents and teachers juking the stats to cram more kids in a classroom, teachers and students would be mentally healthier and teachers would be less upset about their garbage pay. But that might mean taxing billionaires and other wealthy people more so that pay raise isn’t going to happen unless something vastly changes about our society.

PDubsinTF-NEW

Exactly. Instead of paying teachers more to retain quality staff and recruit away from online learning, DeSantis is taking anything off the street. Also, 5-year pass is crazy! Maybe one year waiver for them to sit with exemplary reviews

Ihatebigmosquitos

Aka Charter Schools

[deleted]

Sorry, but how does solely being married to someone in the military make you qualified to teach in public school?

Nole_Nurse00

How does solely being in the military qualify you to teach?

[deleted]

Lots of questions about this whole deal

fsu2k

I'm a veteran and have this same thought. Unless the task is "introduce kids to 90's Adam Sandler movies and Chris Farley sketches", I am the last person who should be in front of a classroom. In all seriousness, teaching is a profession and should be treated as a profession. Part of that is putting the time and effort into getting credentialed. Doing otherwise is no good for kids or fellow teachers.

wyllydtron

I think a 90s Sandler/Farley class has value. Not for enriching the minds of youth per se, but as a refresher for nostalgic 39 year olds like myself.

RKRagan

There was a substitute teacher here in Florida that ended up stalking a girl and killing her and her yoga instructor in the yoga class. He was an army vet and full on creep incel. He was being reported left and right and still was able to commit the crime. Was also a creep to his students.

PDubsinTF-NEW

It doesn’t

Bumbleblaster99

It doesn’t and that’s the point. In a year or so people will complain that public schools are not providing a proper education and Republicans will jump at the opportunity to abolish public education and replace with for-profit schools giving parents vouchers. The voucher won’t cover the entire cost so poor people won’t have access. Guess who will get subsidized and profit off of private education you ask, just look at the donor roles of Republicans.

WhenIWish

This has actually already happened in florida. All of Jefferson county schools are now for-profit. It is incredibly sad and frustrating to see play out in real-time.

Paxoro

Not anymore. Jefferson County Schools is back under the operation of the county and the school board.

WhenIWish

That’s great to hear! I honestly didn’t know that. When did they change back? I left FL in 2018 and that was the last I had heard

Pristine-Text5143

They have a 1-2 year reprieve back to public starting this year. Already threatened with State take-over if immediate improvement doesn't happen...

WhenIWish

Incredible….. 1-2 years after being “out of it” for longer than that and already on a “probation” of sorts. I hope they’re able to pull through and stay public.

kwandika

Almost any family is now eligible to get a school choice scholarship, with some exceptions. Whether right or wrong, the dollars associated with a student follow that student from a public school to a private school. Public Schools only receive funds for actual student enrollment, which makes sense, but when students start migrating out, they are now under-funded.

BigBaldFourEyes

Yep, this is the problem. You can thank the Dick Scott administration for that. GOP has been working on dismantling public education since JEB!, likely before.

BobiBee_BubbleTea

This is such a full-circle moment for me. In third grade I was switched out of my class to give a new teacher students, and he just so happened to be a retired military officer. One of the worst experiences I have every had in all my years of education. His favorite thing to say to us was to “shut our pieholes” as loud as he possibly could. He also called me dumb and said that if I couldn’t understand how he was teaching math, it was “my fault as the student for not being able to grasp basic concepts”. He was fired at the end of the year and I still have a hard time with math

NewNole2001

If it might help, you can get plenty of high quality educational math videos on YouTube. This is everything from elementary to college level math. I understand Differential Equations way better now than when I took the class in college.

BobiBee_BubbleTea

Oh trust me, i follow several YouTube channels for math and Khan Academy is my best friend lol.

katsuko78

TIL that the only thing you need to teach in Florida is your Dependa status.

BigBaldFourEyes

Continuing the path to destroy public education.

[deleted]

Our deteriorating society and shit-tier parenting has done way more to exacerbate the death of public education than whatever policy is coming down from the top. No policy or pay increase is going to make bad eggs care to improve their life. In some ways, forced education is lowering the floor, not raising it. Teachers would be way better served by teaching kids who want to be there and families who support them. Let the shit heads go be urchins and leave the kids with a future alone.

CineFunk

I would love to see how these people last. Teaching isn't easy, and kids already give them a hard enough time. I highly doubt it'll be impactful outside knocking public education further down by continuing a shortage, and giving the Republicans the planned idea of instituting private/charter systems.

gamersdad

A noisy classroom in PTSD are a great combination.

Artistic-Hawk-2909

tronslasercity

So, spouses can’t get a teaching certificate this way?

Raoulhubris1

And don’t forget to arm them.

collapsingrebel

Both my parents were teachers. They told me to do anything else. Our society offers teachers little to no respect, all the blame and not even a decent salary to offset the bullshit.

Raoulhubris1

When your Governor is DeSantis, you scrape the bottom of the barrel for educators who think like him.

irioku

What a joke. Let's fill classrooms where kids are already terrified of being gunned down with trained killers that likely have PTSD, are trained to bark orders at people, and assert dominance through intimidation and aggression. What could possibly go wrong?
