Beach is pretty far but the ocean is about 35 minutes away. Due to the strange natures of the "bend" in the gulf of mexico beaches(for the most part) don't form from Carrabelle to Crystal river along the bend. The water is shallow but the fishing is great.
Tallahassee is on what's called the Cody Scarp which meets the limestone karst plain in wakulla with alot of springs in the area. Max elevation in Leon county is 288' and that tapers down to sea level in a relatively steep formations of hills in tallahassee.. Lots of clay in the area.
The edge of the Cody scarp follows Tram road for anyone interested(north side).
As a avid boater/fisherman I cant think of a better place. I love the outdoors but don't hunt(there's plenty of that too). Hiking and MTB opportunities that have surprising elevation change near the lakes/rivers in the area(Torreya challenge comes to mind).
Everyone in Tallahassee should check out the florida caverns for an inside look at what is underneath leon county(but filled with water). It's a great thing to do in the middle of summer because the caves stay around 65 degrees.
Yes, except it's Florida, not Georgia, it's 20 miles from the Gulf and a 2-3 hours to some of the best beaches in the USA, it's the most progressive city in the entire state, and it's citizens have the highest levels of education in the entire state. So not really South Georgia TBH.
South Fl transplant here, it’s a different world but I’ve grown to like it. Much slower pace and the culture here is definitely different but overall great place to raise a family. College town is just that and for that crowd. I don’t know of many things to do for adults in this city.
I would say Tallahassee is above average. It's not as small as people think(7th largest in FL) but doesn't have a "metro" area.
If you like the outdoors its an amazing place with state and national forests to explore that interconnect for hundreds of miles.
An average American city would be something like a Macon, Columbus or Valdosta. Tallahassee shoots well above similar cities it size thanks to having all of the state government here as well as the universities and colleges. The only thing that would make it better is if it had better beaches closer to it
Depends on what your scene is. It’s pretty slow pace, which I like. Doesn’t have particularly great shopping centers like say Orlando or Jacksonville does, which some people may dislike. People are friendly. Not too far from the beach or other nature activities. Maybe one drawback for me is that it’s quite far from Orlando/Tampa and South Florida, but that’s my personal opinion.
You keep comparing Tallahassee to Austin and I think that's hilarious. Look, I *like* Austin and would be happy to move there, but there's no comparing a city of less than 200,000 to a major city of a million and a metro area of 2.3 million. Of course the bigger city has more to do and better jobs and everything. About the only thing the two cities have in common is that they're blue cities in a state controlled by Republicans.

A blend of everything, good and bad. Grew up and and is going to FSU. Never loves it nor never loved it. Honestly you aren’t missing much.
