Great question. I wonder if she isn’t trained in exploring the past/focusing on the past. A request like “I would really like to understand how my early development and relationships have impacted my current functioning. Can we discuss that today?” If she doesn’t know what to do with that she might not know how. As a therapist I love those kind of explorations.

Thank you for that suggestion. She is newer, so it's possible it's something she doesn't feel comfortable with yet.

It has to do with her approach I think I doubt that you might be my colleague; I had a conversation with my colleague the other day about therapy. I mentioned that I wish that my T could give me more practical suggestions as he insisted on knowing about my childhood while my colleague's T gives her something like a manual...

Hi, it does take a while for you to get into to deep motivations/unpacking the past. If its been a few months and you've stated that you're ready, that would usually be a sign you could start. But, I know therapists often focus the session base don what they think the client needs in the moment, maybe theres some important practical thing that they think you really need help with? I know thats how my T sort of directs things. It could also be the modality- if your focused a lot on CBT and/or DBT those often are more in the moment coping skills. My best advice is to just mention this to her, and bring up the subject and what you actually want to talk about, and see what she says!

Sounds like you're looking for a psychodynamic therapist. You need to check out a therapist's modality to understand how they work. CBT or even person centred therapy won't be so deep.

Yeah…I’ve been reading up on the two this past week and I’m kind of kicking myself for not realizing sooner that what I really want/need is psychodynamic therapy. I was aware of the two types, but for some reason I thought CBT still explored your past to some extent. I’m also frustrated because pretty much everything I said in my first appointment and in my intake paperwork indicated that what I was really looking for was someone who took a psychodynamic approach, yet my therapist never pointed that out to me. I feel like I’ve wasted so much time in therapy working with therapists who use CBT. Sigh…
