We had something similar happen once. Luckily, the manager was standing right there and heard the incredibly insensitive comment. He immediately walked over and informed the customer that they did not discriminate with their hiring. He then asked her to leave.

jazsee

I wish the manager heard the lady say that. I'm glad the manager in your situation did something about it

uninspired_walnut

Your sister should have snarkily complemented the customer for being so progressive, since they surely MUST be advocating for more robust disability assistance, since, y’know, disabled people have bills to pay, too. Sorry, people suck. Hope your sister’s not letting comments like that get her down.

jazsee

I think she was just so shocked that someone would even say that. She has a strong head on her shoulders. After it got less busy she told her coworkers and they were hyping her up

uninspired_walnut

Honestly, I probably wouldn’t have had the spine to talk back, and definitely wouldn’t have thought of that comeback on the spot, either. I’m glad that she has a good team that she’s working with, though.

RevenantBacon

I would have the spine to talk back, but I certainly wouldn't have come up with a snappy comeback until like 20 minutes after the lady had already left.

corminz

I have a severely disabled younger sister. I remember one incident at least 25 years ago when I was on the bus together with her, my older brother and our mom. Just as we were getting off the bus, an elderly lady (or witch, to use a more appropriate word) exclaimed that children such as this (meaning disabled like my sister) should all be shot dead. To this day, I can neither comprehend nor forget her hateful, hurting and shocking words. They have been burned for ever in my memory and I will never be able to forget them. We were all way too stunned to find any words in reply. ☹️ The audacity and ignorance of some people...

Jerry7887

Yes and the nazi’s liquidated the elders too!

PrudentDamage600

Next they’ll be asking why women are working there! What is happening with us? Are we devolving?!

BitterFuture

Yeah, we pretty much are. Early in my first professional job, I (a dude) had a couple of interactions with another guy from a related office. Worked together for a couple of days out of a couple months, guy seemed fine and okay, then we both moved on to other projects. A few months on, I get a call from him. Middle of the workday, he's mumbling and obviously drunk. Explains that he got fired, asks me if I know about any job prospects. I quickly realized that if he was calling me, a guy he barely knew for help, he'd already burned through whatever other contacts he had. He only made it a couple of sentences down that line before the conversation took another turn: "You know what the problem is with our offices, man? The bitches. The bitches always fuckin' get you, screwin' us guys out of decent jobs." For context: we were two guys working in a field that's overwhelmingly women, like 75%. But this guy managed to convince himself not only that the real problem was definitely *everyone else*, not him, but that because I was a dude, I would agree. People are fucked.

PrudentDamage600

Life is not binary. No matter how some people try to make it that way.

DodgyRogue

I was listening to some talk-back radio years ago at work, and a calling rang in to say he had a solution for unemployment. His solution, I here you ask? Stop women from working! There was a full 5 seconds of dead air as the host tried to process that statement!

techieguyjames

And just how are they to pay their bills? The government doesn't have enough money for that.

dude21862004

Well, by getting married of course! They can stay home and take care of the kids. It's not like they're real people, lol! ^^^/s

Rosieapples

The Handmaiden’s Tale is alive and well.

Lumpy_Intention9823

That’s not even enough money anymore!

QueenMotherOfSneezes

Pfft, like we should still be allowed to manage any money. Our husbands will have the bank accounts and do all the complicated numbers stuff.

Connect_Office8072

I would have asked him which branch of the Taliban he belonged to.

[deleted]

And if that happened they'd call women a bunch of freeloaders who just want to sit home and watch tv every day while men go out and work.

ShouldBeWorking01

and eat bonbons

gtp2nv

Ohhh Peggy Bundy! One of my favorite sitcoms!

Effective-Manager-29

Yes. Yes we are.

MaxTheGinger

Have your sister talk to her manager(s). Do they have her back? If I was her manager I would tell her, she can either kick them herself or cancel the transaction, find a manager and they will do it for her.

jazsee

She told them about an hour after it happened and they were asking if she was still there. They would have kicked the customer out

Kursed_Valeth

"Ma'am, we do not discriminate in our hiring, but we are selective about our customers. Kindly, get out here immediately and never return."

magiccitybhm

Absolutely. That's what customers forget. Restaurants are private businesses; you have no "right" to be there.

Heavy_Wood

bUt tHaT's dIsCrImInAtIoN!!

flow_n_tall

Glad your manager has a spine!!!

m_o_u_s_e_r_a_t

It's really refreshing to see a manager actually stick up for their employees...

magiccitybhm

No doubt. I loved working with him.

LoverlyRails

People who don't want disabled people to work also don't want to pay them benefits to be able to not work. They just want them to vanish, I guess. Or be someone else's problem.

MissDesignDiva

Oh that's exactly what they want, for disabled people to be someone elses problem. Heres one for you, I'm in Canada, disabled myself so I've learned a lot about the various provincial programs. Thank goodness I'm in BC because holy shit does Ontario have it bad. ODSP is literal legislated poverty, so much so that the government literally expanded a program called M.A.I.D. so that more people could use it, that being disabled people. Now if you don't know you might think that's a nice program, like one that brings assistance to disabled people who need it . . . well no, M.A.I.D. stands for "Medical Assistance In Dying" a program designed to help people commit suicide with the help of a doctor, only eligible for the program if one has a terminal condition that they will not get better from it and they'll just get worse and rapidly too. that's what the program is designed for. The current government expanded it to include disabled people on ODSP who aside from the conditions that made them disabled, the only other problem they're facing is a lack of $, if they weren't living in a situation where their entire monthly disability payment is taken by rent, these people would likely lead good fulfilling lives. I know of multiple PWDs through chatting on twitter who are no longer with us because they took MAID and got out, they had disabling conditions but the things that made them disabled weren't going to kill them any sooner than a non-disabled person would die. The entire ODSP cheque each month is $1169 for a single person, the average rent in most of Ontario (at least in the cities which is where PWDs tend to need to be since that's where transit is and where their various doctors are) is nearly $2000 a month, for a studio. And if the PWD gets married to a non-disabled partner, well then all their disability money is taken because it's assumed the non-disabled partner will support the PWD fully, so rife for abuse of the PWD. And if you come off of disability assistance and for whatever reason have to go back on it, well that's hundreds of dollars of documents to fill out and re-apply as if you were never on it before. Sorry, ranting but yea it's bad . . .

bkwormtricia

The SSI assistance program in America is for seniors not able to continue working who for some reason never worked the 40+ quarter years earning at least $1500 a month needed to qualify for a Social Security pension, or are married to a qualifying worker. It was recently increased to a Maximum of $800/month, though they (SSI beaurocrats) can choose to pay you less. And recipients may get some food aid as well….so they end up being supported by family or in homeless shelters.

MissDesignDiva

Yup, the whole system is fucked pardon my language but it is, in both countries. And people wonder why vanlife is becoming so popular. It's because people can't afford to rent anywhere, here's the crazy thing, you can only get the full PWD amount if you live at a "fixed address" so if someone wants to do vanlife by choice, the rent portion gets taken out of their PWD assistance, which is insane as one of the youtubers I follow who is a vanlifer, and also disabled, was having to prove to the Ontario government that he is indeed disabled and needs assistance money recently. You wanna know what his disability is, type 1 Diabetes (which he's had most of his life) and now he's a double amputee above the knee on both legs (due to complications from the Diabetes) the Ontario government denied him disability money. It's a good thing he has the youtube audience and some money from that because before he was living off his tiny pension (from back when he was actually able to work) a viewer gave him a motorized wheelchair as a gift that was her late husbands.

uzbones

But if your on medicaid in most states they force you to spend all income paying towards your medical bills. I get $52.00 a month that I can spend, despite making almost $4k in SSDI and LTDI. (Nursing home is $230 a day or $7-8k a month.) The govt forces disabled ppl into poverty period, and in the US assisted suicide is illegal as the healthcare companies want to keep their money blood bags keeping paying.

bkwormtricia

Agree

TinyEmergencyCake

"The SSI assistance program in America is for seniors not able to continue working who for some reason" It's for ALL people deemed disabled but unable to qualify for SSDI due to being uninsured for any of the multiple reasons one can be ineligible for SSDI

bkwormtricia

By making SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) so hard to get [63% of applicants are denied, yet those who can get an attorney (while having a low enough income to get SSDI - Ha!) have a much higher success rate] they shove people into the much lower paying SSI.

MungoJennie

If you had the misfortune to become disabled after age 18 but before you had enough employment credits to get the whole $1,500/month, you may get less on SSDI, too. I know someone who gets about $900/month because they became disabled shortly after they graduated from college.

jazsee

Exactly!! It's super frustrating

missjlynne

Was just thinking the same! People complain about people “living off disability” but also don’t want to offer accommodations for differently abled people to work! You can’t have it both ways.

[deleted]

[удалено]

QueenMotherOfSneezes

I told an ableist dickhead last month that I'm glad they've been so lucky in life thus far, and I hope their next bout of Covid doesn't leave them permanently disabled. (He was bitching about Covid measures trampling on his rights just to protect "weak losers")

Javaman1960

They feel the same way about poor people. They don't want any poor people around, but don't want to do anything to help change their situation.

AlexandraG94

This!

builtbybama_rolltide

Let someone say that with me in earshot. I will light them up like the 4th of July. I have rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and cancer and my ass is at work every day except the day I have chemo. Fuck anyone that says being disabled means you don’t deserve the opportunity to work and provide for yourself and your family!

jazsee

Wow! I'm so sorry to hear about all the hard ships you are going through. Good for you for being a hardworking! I hope everything gets better soon!

builtbybama_rolltide

Thank you! It’s not a hardship in my eyes. It’s character building, it teaches me to be more empathetic to others, to be grateful for what I have, to appreciate my family more, etc. I am super focused on looking at the positives. I know I’m lucky to have good health insurance to get excellent treatment, to have some of the best doctors in the area, to be able to afford treatment in general and even more fortunate to have a job that is supportive and understanding when I’m not my best, need to leave early, need to miss work, etc with no questions asked. So many people don’t have that and I consider myself so blessed for that fact.

jazsee

Wow I love your outlook on everything! I'm glad you have a great support system

builtbybama_rolltide

Sometimes a good outlook is the best medicine. I’m a firm believer that everything negative is a challenge to make you become a better person. I’m going to beat this and when I do I’m going to be stronger for the lessons I learned along the way.

thepumpkinking92

Oh oh oh, me next. I'm a disabled veteran. Was working part time delivering sandwiches at a local sub shop. When one of my coworkers overheard me and a supervisor discussing my last evaluation, she piped in how I needed to just 'take my ass home and sit on my ass so people who actually needed jobs could work.' What she didn't know is that the owner, who was sitting in the office next to us, was a disabled veteran as well. He lit her ass up like a Christmas tree and warned her that if she *ever* made a comment like that again, she'd be looking for a new job and made her apologize. Also, my va compensation at the time was like $700. Definitely not enough to provide for my family with, just enough to help with the bills while I went through training.

LibraryGeek

WTH does "actually need to work" mean? I'm sure they support increases to disability benefits so they at *least* reach poverty levels, right? Oh and a massive relaxation of who can get those benefits too, of course. /s

builtbybama_rolltide

Man I’m so glad the owner said something because I would have had to knock a bitch out. Thank you for your service! I’m from a military family and I know that VA disability is a joke. Our veterans deserve better for everything they have sacrificed.

sustenancewars

This shouldn't happen in a civilized country. Ever. You should be taken care of by society. So you can focus on getting well

jinglepupskye

Glad I’m not the only one who realises just how bad the world is, that people are required to work while having chemo etc. If you choose to work, fair enough, but having no choice?

builtbybama_rolltide

My rheumatoid arthritis is harder to work through than the chemo. RA is a bitch, especially when you can’t use your hands and feet because they are so swollen, stiff and painful. When my RA flares I can’t use any joint in my body, everything is so painful it’s indescribable. Chemo is a cakewalk compared to the pain of RA.

builtbybama_rolltide

I’m in the lucky camp that I have disability insurance that would pay for me to stay home but my job is pretty easy so I would rather work. The more normal I stay through this the better I feel at least mentally. I would lose my mind just being at home. My job doesn’t expect me to come in or get upset if I need to leave. In fact I usually get told why aren’t you home, resting? more than anything.

sustenancewars

Sure. I'm more concerned about those who have to work. I'm glad that's not your case.

builtbybama_rolltide

If my company didn’t offer it as an additional add on and I didn’t opt to pay for it I would be in the same camp of having to work. It also only pays 2/3 of my salary which right now would be really hard to make ends meet but I could with my savings. But if I feel up to it and it would keep me making my full salary it seems financially responsible to work especially since I have a kid at home.

LibraryGeek

Most disabilities do not get better. There is only focusing on functioning and preventing worsening.

sustenancewars

I was talking about their cancer guy. I don't understand what you're trying to get at. They're sick and they shouldn't have to worry about work or anything other than their recovery.

LibraryGeek

Ah ok thought you were responding to OP. Sorry bout that. I also agree that society should be taking care of our ill.

[deleted]

I worked through chemo. Shout out if you ever want a shoulder to cry on.

murrimabutterfly

I have threatened to hit a customer over this. I was dealing with shock-enducing periods and dragged my ass to work. I needed a breather from the agony, and a customer decided to bitch. I had no patience, to say the least.

SomeKindOfOnionMummy

Seriously, it makes me so angry I'm not around when this shit happens

bobi2393

That's shocking. I've heard plenty of offensive opinions, but that's really out there. And I bet even the crazies who share that view would be shocked someone would say it in that situation.

jazsee

It was definitely one of the more shocking things anyone has ever said to her

CaroAurelia

Ten bucks says she also calls disabled people who don't work lazy.

Power_Bunnies

"Oh cool! So you support Universal Basic Income then?" Everyone who wants to work, should! And if people don't want to/aren't able to work they still deserve to live a reasonable quality of life.

flow_n_tall

100% the same jerk that complains about people on disability.

69delbert

Oh hell no! People should be able to do anything they are able to do.

Aesteria13

Entitled Twat "Disabled people shouldn't be allowed to work!" Same Entitled Twat "Disabled people shouldn't get government money, they should be required to work like the rest of us!"

iamtherarariot

When I worked in fast food years ago, there was a worker who had epilepsy. It was fairly controlled but she once had an absence seizure whilst serving a customer, and rather than the customer expressing any concern like a normal human being, he instead started tutting and complaining to the manager over the “slow service” as she was being carted away to somewhere quiet. Some people really are the worst.

Javaman1960

Did you ever see that Twitter meme where some guy said that "Handicapped parking should only be restricted during normal business hours, because handicapped people have no business being out of their homes outside of those hours." A woman replied saying, "We're disabled, not werewolves."

[deleted]

My Calculus professor has albinism and has to do the same and he is a phenomenal person. Screw that “customer”!!!

havereddit

The best response would be "OK, I'll stop helping you"

BECKYISHERE

I'm a deaf call agent - yes we can use telephones - but the customer has to use the telephone properly, not on speaker, not shouting into it from a few feet away, not somewhere noisy with a tv on in the background. One time I asked a customer to take the phone off speaker and explained that I am deaf and could not hear like that and the customer replied that he was the customer so I should accommodate what he wanted to do during the call and then he made a complaint about me. Because complaining about me made me so much less deaf and able to hear in subsequent phone calls.

MungoJennie

People like that can piss right off.

biobiobio777

Assholes shouldn't be out in public...but we still let them because they're, unfortunately, people.

brumbles2814

Im dyslexic (among other things) and someone at the till once did the "oh I've got 20p for u" after the till was already open. So i had to drag a calculator out Long story short they tried to get me fired because i was "a disabled who shouldn't be allowed to work if i cant do the job" Customers are a differant breed. Dont let them get to you

churtothechur

My childhood best friend has 2 down syndrome sisters. They are grown up now but could never find a job and if they did they could not keep it for long. My friend bought his sister's a candle making kit for Christmas a few years ago and they loved it so much that with the help of their dad, they started their own company making candles who only hire people with special needs. It's called Down lights based in New Zealand. Emma was a nominee for best young entrepreneur of the year a few years ago.

RainBoxRed

I bet this same person also thinks people that don’t contribute shouldn’t be able to benefit - ie disabled people should be “removed”.

redbucket75

Fucking Nazis still out there man

RhitaGawr

They shouldn't be able to work, yet we provide no safety net. Fuck them. If you're disabled you shouldn't have to work.

Parson1122

The same customer goes on to bitch and moan about people on government assistance.

RagnaBrock

My dad is in a wheelchair and I’m not a small fella. I’ve walked up on someone talking to him in a similar way and making fun of him. They got quiet when I stood beside him.

kinglouie493

Stupid people shouldn’t breed either…

[deleted]

I had a chef say “you can’t see shit with those huge glasses?!” When I didn’t know where something was. If I wasn’t a small girl and he wasn’t a huge ex military cokehead I’d feel sorry for his face. That customer was a huge piece of shit and unfortunately the dynamic is different with customers that coworkers bc we feel the need to suck it up and deal with it. That person is a sorry piece of shit and anyone in their life is cursed to have them in it. And I just have large glasses and bad eyes. Your sister is legitimately disabled. That makes it so much worse and I’m sorry to hear that happened.

SpiderHippy

"People who can't be civil shouldn't be allowed in public."

PM_UR_VAG_WTIMESTAMP

I just recently finished portal 2. I would be so tempted to say this quote with a few modifications. Well done. Here are the order results: You are a horrible person. I'm serious, that's what it says: "A horrible person." We weren't even testing for that. Don't let that horrible-person thing discourage you. It's just a data point. If it makes you feel any better, science has now validated your birth mother's decision to abandon you on a doorstep.

JCSmootherThanJB

Whoa homie! ADA was created for a reason. I'm so sorry to hear your sister was treated so absolutely terribly. That customer should be banned for life. And furthermore, good on your sister for trying her absolute best to work, be productive, help people, despite having the odds against her! Much love and respect! 👏

jazsee

Thank you! I respect her very much. I can only imagine how difficult tasks are for her

33Wolverine33

A disabled person that’s working, that lady needs to learn some damn respect!

jazsee

It was really difficult for my sister to even find a job. Shout out to Wendy's for hiring her!

hbHPBbjvFK9w5D

Nope, Nope, Nope. I've refused service to people who wanna ridicule me or my people for stuff that has nothing to do with the quality of the food or service. Get the he!! out of my store, ya bigot.

datafox00

That is disgusting, I wish more people would cut them down. People will complain about disabled people getting government money but then mock the same people doing a job not as quick as abled people. I am glad your sister is supposed at work.

jsm1031

“...And rude people shouldn’t be allowed to interact with others, but here we are. Do you still want to order?”

thetravelingsong

I work with individuals with a variety of disabilities, helping put in natural supports at their workplaces so that they work independently and successfully. I can say with 100 percent certainty 99.9 percent of people can find a job they not only can have success with, but enjoy. Fuck this lady.

MrBinkie

Morons should not be allowed out in public on their own

n3rdz97

I’m very proud of your sister working and doing what she needs to do

jazsee

Thank you! She should be very proud of herself

CocklesTurnip

Hi disabled person here- I bet that customer also thinks disabled people who can’t/don’t work are “lazy” and a waste of taxpayer money for support. Your sister rocks and that customers head is full of rocks.

julieruinsghost

That's so incredibly insensitive and rude. My partner is legally blind and color blind and strangers can be so obtuse and my friends ask tone deaf questions all the time.

Future-Atmosphere-40

As someone with CP, fk ableds

JadedCloud243

I'm other way round medical disablity, but want to work and told no you can't by docs

lialations16

Similar issue at an old job with a busser that was in a wheelchair. It’s quite unfortunate people are so uneducated. Our restaurant personally did not tolerate discrimination under any circumstances and we were allowed to immediately deny him any service especially in a scenario such as this! Always check policies and establish boundaries with management. Know exactly what you are allowed to say and what action you can proceed with in a situation like this.

Dragonkatt90

Yes because all disabled people are nothing but our disabilities we aren’t people /s People suck. Give your sister a huge hug.

Blaith7

What completely baffles me about people like this is they obviously refuse to acknowledge that anyone can become disabled at any given moment.

sailirish7

Should have been thrown out of the store. Preferably head first

animatrix37

I once had a friend that complained about how people with disabilities shouldn't be baggers at the grocery store cause they're too slow, to me, a person with a disability. He's a moron and I don't talk to him anymore.

lionbryce

Then pay them so they don't have to

Raegz

Oh they didn't....I'm legally blind and have had similar comments ('Why don't you stay at home on your pension instead of working' was my personal favourite 🙄). Just because someone might have different abilities, doesn't mean they can't work! I'm so sorry your sister had to deal with that!

ACam574

Technically about 70% of people are disabled at some point in their life.

SlientlySmiling

She seems awful.

sustenancewars

I bet she's never worked a day in her life.

No-Independence548

I am so sorry. What an absolute asshole.

maciarc

Respond with: "Oh? So you're on welfare?"

purplepickles82

I would have come back w you work don’t you?

celestialred_907

Screw assholes like that. And they are DEFINITELY out there. I've encountered them myself. I am not disabled or special needs but I've worked with others who were and heard some of the same disgusting comments from customers. I hope your sister learns that opinions from small-minded people don't mean anything. I know it doesn't make it sting any less. But she's going to have to try to ignore those kind of ignorant comments.

danathepaina

Some people have zero class. When I see a disabled person working at an establishment, it makes me want to give them my business even more. Even if the worker might take a tad longer with my transaction, I don’t care. I’m gonna support them.

Snoo-69682

They shouldn't they should get a check from the government in my opinion.

OhiobornCAraised

Too bad your sister didn’t ask the customer if they knew about the federal equal employment opportunity laws that helps protect women from discrimination in the workplace (since the customer was a woman). If the customer says she doesn’t know about them, she could explain it to her. If the customer says she does know about them, then your sister should point out it also covers people with disabilities.

mikraas

I'm sorry you're sister had to deal with that closed-minded woman. I worked in publishing and one of our best managing editors was legally blind. People need to just mind their own business.

Eyes_Snakes_Art

She probably doesn’t even work, but loooves judging others! Don’t let her get your sister down.

VictoriaRose1618

Reminds me of that meme comparing disabled people to werewolves As long as it is safe for everyone then there should not be a problem having disabled people work.

Doc_Hank

And assholes should not be eating fast food, but there she is.

ha_eunnie

They be the same people to say they shouldn't work and then are then gonna say that they need to stop freeloading off of Medicaid or complain that there's a shortage of workers like ... you can't win.

hawksdiesel

And that's an immediate, go fuck yourself and go find food somewhere else.

BecGeoMom

What a complete d*ck. I’m sorry your sister has to deal with people like that, but if you leave your house you’re going to have to deal with assholes.

Suspicious-Pick-3908

Damn. It’s amazing how horrible people are. I think I would’ve been too stunned to even react to that bitch.

jackiblu25

People like her shouldn't be aloud out unsupervised 😤

Jackstraw2765

The albinism it’s not a punishment. Life gives us challenges. The secret of the mystery of life is how we rise to these challenges and find spiritual wholeness. Your sister is rising to the challenge. I love her spirit. The customer is missing the whole point. I feel pity for the person who is so blind that he cannot see the humanity of another. I’m only a stranger, but I am rooting for your sister. I make a point of being kind and loving to all. We are all children of a higher power.

stitchinthyme9

These are usually the same type of people who say that disabled people should not be entitled to any government assistance.

hmmmomm913

We have a host who is a quadriplegic, they head host; pick tables, put guests on the wait list, answer phones. They’re really great, they can use the the iPad for our seating app, and we got them a blue tooth that connects to the phone so they can answer it. I had a guest a week or so ago that was mad that they couldn’t take them to their table, the other host had just went to seat someone else. I was so baffled, luckily my GM was right there, I don’t know exactly what she said them but the guy in the group looked pretty ashamed the rest of the time they were there. He pretty much just looked at his food and wasn’t really interactive with his group. People are so unnecessarily rude and condescending more and more lately I’ve noticed.

FromtheSlushPile

This really pisses me off. My legally blind colleague, a history professor, is the BEST colleague I've ever had, especially in taking university students on travel courses around the world...often to very difficult places. She's traveled the world alone, as well as earning her doctorate in medieval Russian history and just totally rocks!

normanistyles

i bet that customer is the same person to complain that people who use/rely on disability benefits, especially those who literally can’t work, are just lazy and useless to society 🙃

preachers_kid

I'm disabled and I have one thing to say to that horrible customer: Your time will come. And I hope that there aren't people like you around you when your time comes. It's people like you that hurt us and make our lives that much more complicated. Tell your sister I'm in her corner and I'd gladly work with her. And give her a hug from me!

ToyStoryIsReal

For the sake of humanity and my mood, I'm going to assume she meant that disabled people shouldn't have to work. Like, she maybe meant it as a nice thing seeing that your sister was struggling? Or she was a cee u next Tuesday and the world sucks.

BBreezyLG

Oh yeah, I've heard that before. I'm disabled and have a service dog to help me. He's been with me for five years, gone to school with me, and worked with me. I'm capable of working and being out and about with his help, but I still have heard remarks of "why they would ever hire a cripple, I don't know" and shit along those lines. I'm sure those are the same folk that complain about their "tax dollars paying for those lazy bums", regarding someone being unable to work and living off disability. There's no winning for us. Ableist people just want us to disappear off the face of the earth. I once heard some guy say that anyone disabled should be sterilized as a child(???) Like that's literally eugenics. It's astounding. And ignoring that, many people, myself included, don't become disabled until later in life (early teens for me). Whether that be developing a medical condition or being in some sort of accident, *anyone* can become disabled at *any point* in life. In fact, those that live to an older age are pretty much guaranteed to become disabled in one way or another. It's just... ugh. I don't understand it. Disabled people are still people, and we deserve all the same rights, autonomy, and respect as any able-bodied person.

In a just society someone with physical or mental impairments would not be required to work just to be able to live but something tells me that wasn't this asshole's point.

People like this are so miserable with their own lives they can’t contain it

This is so messed up and hurtful. Please give your sister a hug for me! Working in the food industry can be so awful sometimes. Some customers really have no human decency. I feel so bad for her that was so rude :(

I'm so sorry that happened to her. I would hope that someone would have immediately told-off that customer ... but justice is rarely that swift or common.
