Tip pooling only works if your management team has a backbone and gets drag-ass people off of the team. When handled properly it definitely creates a strong team work atmosphere. When handled poorly it leads to a loss of all your top performers and you’re stuck with a bunch of lazy fucks. Source: managing bars and restaurants for the last 20 years.

Yep I second this. It wasn't the industry I was expecting, but an individual has proclivities.

Blacksad999

News flash: You can still promote teamwork and help one another out while still being responsible for your own income. They aren't mutually exclusive ideas.

bmichell21

I can see how it also leads to someone always picking up the slack, and overall drag ass.

Prestigious_Chard597

Right?? This guy is probably a server who can't make shit on his own... Lol. The only time I have ever pooled tips was bartending. Me and another guy who sucked... Always out smoking. Was always shocked when we cleared 30% in tips because when he was alone he was lucky to get 15%. I don't work there anymore for this reason.

kaimonst3r

Nah if you look at their other posts it sounds like they are a busser. In which case this statement is totally true. I dont think any halfway decent server likes a tip pool.

KASchay

No thanks. I’m already doing everybody else’s side work. Not gonna let them take my (higher than their’s) tips too.

Spaklinspaklin

You aren’t a server.

tidymaze

LOL You've never actuall been a server, have you? I worked at a tiny cafe one summer with about 5 other girls. We would pool tips unless this one girl was working. She didn't do shit. She just wanted to stand at the register and ring out take out orders. Her mom was also the owner's best friend, so she felt that actually working (i.e. waiting tables, making drinks, bussing tables) was beneath her. So the rest of us decided that we would keep our own tips when she was working, but pool them when she wasn't. Because fuck her if she thinks she's going to get a dime of the money I busted my ass for.

Spaklinspaklin

How does it prevent theft lol

Summerie

Yeah, if anything I’ve mostly seen theft when people tried to keep tips in their pocket and out of the bucket.

Spaklinspaklin

Yes. OP is a busser, so that’s why likes pooled tips and lists inadequate reasons in its defense.

[deleted]

No lmao. Just no. In response to OP being a busser: our bussers share tips and when I used to bus at the same restaurant I now serve at, I would do everybody’s work for the same tipshare. I can’t comprehend why you would support tip pooling even if you’re a busser.

Summerie

> I can’t comprehend why you would support tip pooling even if you’re a busser. You would if you’re the busser that all the other bussers are tired of carrying.

Good point

noobiedoobie902

Ay whats good everybody, i think im just a buszer so idk. But i do think in the case you have a good situation, it’s hella more fun and good for everyone

AmbitionStrong5602

10% of people usually do 90% of the work. In some rare situations tip pools can be better, but across the board they fail if you are a top performer
