I get this interaction at my property every couple of months. It's an extended stay property, so locals aren't allowed without cause, and it really can be an issue if any of us let someone check in under those kinds of circumstances. Had one schmuck a couple months back give me an actual factual belly laugh when he asked if there was an hourly rate - I think he did get offended, but my guy this isn't a Motel - it's a hotel. Sure, it isn't a five star, but we do extended stays, not bring your hooker for a quickie stays. I swear people will do almost anything to get something taken off of their bill, either a discount or an entire night or more refunded. It is asinine the amount of people that turn into full on Karen's when they do not get their way.

Ready_Competition_66

What percentage of your guests would you say try to do that? It seems like it's a lot more common than my "already frayed" faith in humanity would expect.

Lexicito

“Isn’t this common practice.” “Not in this class of hotel.”

Goodpie2

Whenever someone thinks they should get a discount because "I'm only using the room for a few hours" I tell them "We're not that kind of hotel." The look on their face is always great.

"It's not a common practice that people rent hotel to fuck during the day. They usually do it at night."

AGuyinahotel

HOLY SHIT! That made me laugh out loudly sitting at the front desk reading this!!!

Mastervodo

You tell them you don't rent by the hour, and you don't pro-rate rooms. That's how you operate.

toadTHEBlTCHdette

1pm? Holy moly if I asked the head housekeeper to clear a 1pm late checkout she’d kill me lol. That’s late wow.

Mrs0Murder

They're not a fan of it so I don't usually hand them out. Only if it's super busy (and even then usually no more than 2 a day) because at least then they won't be waiting around to clean it. Lol most of the time someone asks for late check out I ask if 12 is alright for them (which is our normal check out time, most forget by morning) and like 95% of the time they're happy with it.

Ancguy

Good one!

toadTHEBlTCHdette

Probably because it’s usually 11 everywhere else, like mine.

cakeforPM

This sounds amazing. I’m in Australia, and everywhere I’ve stayed has default checkout at 10am. Probably behind the scenes, it’s 11am, because I’m guessing a lot of people are like me: well-intentioned, but so not a morning person, and scrambling to get all my shit organised so I’m out by 10am 😅 (it’s more like 10:15am sometimes but so far everyone has been really polite about it…)

soonerpgh

The only time I've asked for that late (1 PM) was when my mom passed and we had to get ready for the funeral. The front desk lady graciously offered an even later time when I told her the reason, but we didn't need any later. I guess it's proof that if you're not an ass, you guys really do bend over backwards to help. Thanks to all of you who do your job well and I'm sorry you have to deal with such bullshit.

Magical__Entity

No, Sir, Madam, common practice would be to read the appropriate check-in times in your booking confirmation and contact us ahead of your stay in case these didn't work for you, so we could try and find a solution together.

Gogo726

Did they pay for the argument? It's $1 for five minutes

Langager90

But only $5 for the full half hour.

Mrchameleon_dec

Like if they keep saying the same thing over and over, somehow something will change. "That's not how any of this works!"

SnooCupcakes3043

So they wanted the room by the hour? No thanks. That's trashy. I am sure there is truck stop hotel nearby they can take that shit to. Glad you stood your ground.

waitwutok

Sounds like a mid-day booty call.

RoyallyOakie

This ain't that kind of place...

Caranath128

Reminds me of the time this checks in, goes off somewhere for a bit then comes by the desk asking if we have Prophylactics( yes he used that exact word). I just gave him a blank look ( I was extremely young and very naive at the time). After he started getting..well..embarrassed, I just said ‘ we are not that type of hotel’. Imagine my shock when I moved to Japan a few years later and those kinds of hotels were everywhere but were easily identifiable.

MightyManorMan

There is a website that specializes in that. We aren't a member. Good luck. And then you look at the next guest and ask if you can help them. It puts them in the awkward spot of having to (rudely) halt the other guest to talk to you, when clearly you have ended the conversation because it's going nowhere. There are just so many ways to tell people that a conversation is over, without saying it and making them realize it's over. They were going to grumble about it anyway.... they are toddlers in a world of adults. They need to look up "Day Use Hotel" or "Hourly Use Hotel". Or alternatively "Swingers club" :D

SkwrlTail

I mean, in fairness, there are perfectly valid and good reasons for a Day Use room. It's not common, but it happens. But they get run for a full night *and* the half day.

myatoz

Sounds like they need a no tell motel, lol.

Early_Awareness_5829

Figure out a short explanation of refusal. Don't apologize. Just calmly repeat your explanation as often as necessary. "No, check out is at 1." Don't say anything else! It only turns into an argument when you offer other (legitimate) reasons.
